Context. Colliding wind binaries are massive systems featuring strong, interacting stellar winds which may act as particle accelerators. Therefore, such binaries are good candidates for detection at high energies. However, only the massive binary Eta Carinae has been firmly associated with a gamma-ray signal. A second system, gamma^2 Velorum, is positionally coincident with a gamma-ray source, but unambiguous identification remains lacking. Aims. Observing orbital modulation of the flux would establish an unambiguous identification of the binary gamma^2 Velorum as the gamma-ray source detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT). Methods. We have used more than 10 years of observations with Fermi-LAT. Events are folded with the orbital period of the binary to search for variability. Systematic errors that might arise from the strong emission of the nearby Vela pulsar are studied by comparing with a more conservative pulse-gated analysis. Results. Hints of orbital variability are found, indicating maximum flux from the binary during apastron passage. Conclusions. Our analysis strengthens the possibility that gamma-rays are produced in gamma^2 Velorum, most likely as a result of particle acceleration in the wind collision region. The observed orbital variability is consistent with predictions from recent MHD simulations, but contrasts with the orbital variability from Eta Carinae, where the peak of the light curve is found at periastron.
The spectral energy distribution and variability of several blazars (Mkn 501, 1 ES 2344+51.4, PKS 2155-30.4, 1 ES 1218+30.4, 3C 454.3) along the blazar sequence is investigated using a selfconsistent and timedependent lepto-hadronic hybrid emission model. The BL Lac objects in the list are successfully modelled with purely leptonic radiation processes (essentially Synchrotron Self-Compton emission), while the Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar requires highly relativistic hadrons to be present within the jet. Variability is exploited as well with our model to distinguish between Self-Compton and hadro…
We present INTEGRAL spectral analysis in the orbital/superorbital phase space of LS I +61 303. A hard X-ray spectrum with no cutoff is observed at all orbital/superorbital phases. The hard X-ray index is found to be uncorrelated with the radio index (non-simultaneously) measured at the same orbital and superorbital phases. In particular, the absence of an X-ray spectrum softening during the periods of negative radio index does not favor a simple interpretation of the radio index variations in terms of changes of state in a microquasar. We uncover hints for the superorbital variability in the h…
The variability of the high-frequency peaked BL Lac object PKS 2155-304 is studied using almost 10 years of optical, X-ray and gamma-rays data. Publicly available data have been gathered and analyzed with the aim to characterize the variability and to search for log-normality or periodic behavior. The optical and X-ray range follow a log-normal process; a hint for a periodicity of about 700 days is found in optical and in the high energy (100 MeV <E<300 GeV) range. A one zone, time-dependent, synchrotron self-Compton model is successfully used to reproduce the evolution with energy of the vari…
We examine a model for the observed temporal variability of powerful blazars in the $γ$-ray band in which the dynamics is described in terms of a stochastic differential equation, including the contribution of a deterministic drift and a stochastic term. The form of the equation is motivated by the current astrophysical framework, accepting that jets are powered through the extraction of the rotational energy of the central supermassive black hole mediated by magnetic fields supported by a so-called \emph{magnetically arrested} accretion disk. We apply the model to the $γ$-ray light curves of …
The high-mass X-ray binary LS I +61°303 exhibits variability in its radio and X-ray emissions, ranging from minute to hour time-scales. At such short time-scales, not much is known about the possible correlations between these two emissions from this source, which might offer hints to their origin. Here, we study the relationship between these emissions using simultaneous X-ray and radio monitoring. We present new radio observations using the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager Large Array telescope at two frequency bands, 13-15.5 and 15.5-18 GHz. We also describe new X-ray observations performed usi…
Recent reports claiming tentative association of the massive star binary system gamma^2 Velorum (WR 11) with a high-energy gamma-ray source observed by Fermi-LAT contrast the so-far exclusive role of Eta Carinae as the hitherto only detected gamma-ray emitter in the source class of particle-accelerating colliding-wind binary systems. We aim to shed light on this claim of association by providing dedicated model predictions for the nonthermal photon emission spectrum of WR 11. We use three-dimensional magneto-hydrodynamic modeling to trace the structure and conditions of the wind-collision regi…
Monitoring of Sagittarius A* from X-ray to radio wavelengths has revealed structured variability --- including X-ray flares --- but it is challenging to establish correlations between them. Most studies have focused on variability in the X-ray and infrared, where variations are often simultaneous, and because long time series at sub-millimeter and radio wavelengths are limited. Previous work on sub-mm and radio variability hints at a lag between X-ray flares and their candidate sub-millimeter or radio counterparts, with the long wavelength data lagging the X-ray. However, there is only one pub…
We present Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer X-ray and Arcminute Microkelvin Imager Large Array radio observations of a rapid hard-to-soft state transition in the black hole X-ray transient MAXI J1820+070. During the transition from the hard state to the soft state a switch between two particular types of quasiperiodic oscillations (QPOs) was seen in the X-ray power density spectra, from type-C to type-B, along with a drop in the strength of the broadband X-ray variability and a brief flare in the 7-12 keV band. Soon after this switch (~1.5-2.5 hr) a strong radio flare was observed th…
We report the first results of timing and spectral studies of \textit{Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR)} observations of six TeV emitting high-frequency peaked blazars: 1ES 0347$-$121, 1ES 0414$+$009, RGB J0710$+$591, 1ES 1101$-$232, 1ES 1218$+$304 and H 2356-309. Two out of these six TeV blazars, 1ES 1101$-$232 and 1ES 1218$+$304, showed strong evidence of intraday variations in the 3--79 keV energy range during those observations. We also found a hint of an intraday variability timescale of 23.5 ks in the light curve of 1ES 1218$+$304 using an autocorrelation function analysis. …
Long-term observations have shown that black hole X-ray binaries exhibit strong, aperiodic variability on time-scales of a few milliseconds to seconds. The observed light curves display various characteristic features like a log-normal distribution of flux and a linear rms-flux relation, which indicate that the underlying variability process is stochastic in nature. It is also thought to be intrinsic to accretion. This variability has been modelled as inward propagating fluctuations of mass accretion rate, although the physical process driving the fluctuations remains puzzling. In this work, w…

We study the gamma-ray variability of 13 blazars observed with the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). These blazars have the most complete light curves collected during the first 4 years of the Fermi sky survey. We model them with the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) process or a mixture of the OU processes. The OU process has power spectral density (PSD) proportional to 1/f^alpha with alpha changing at a characteristic time scale, tau_0, from 0 (tau>>tau_0) to 2 (tau<<tau_0). The PSD of the mixed OU process has two characteristic time scales and an additional intermediate region with 0<alpha<2. We show…

The origin of the soft X-ray excess in AGN has been a mystery ever since its discovery. We present how the time variability of this spectral component can point towards its origin. Using the powerful technique of multi-epoch fitting, we study how the soft excess in a given object depends on other parameters of the continuum and the accretion disk possibly hinting at its nature. As an example, we present results from this technique applied to the Seyfert galaxy Mrk 841. We study all (3) XMM and some of the Suzaku pointings available and find that the source displays an impressive variability in…
We present an investigation of long-term modulation in the X-ray light curves of five little-studied candidate high-mass X-ray binaries using the Swift Burst Alert Telescope. IGR J14488-5942 and AX J1700.2-4220 show strong modulation at periods of 49.6 and 44 days, respectively, which are interpreted as orbital periods of Be star systems. For IGR J14488-5942, observations with Swift X-ray Telescope show a hint of pulsations at 33.4 s. For AX J1700.2-4220, 54 s pulsations were previously found with XMM. Swift J1816.7-1613 exhibits complicated behavior. The strongest peak in the power spectrum i…
We present the results of a broadband radio-to-GeV observing campaign organized to get a better understanding of the radiation processes responsible for the $γ$-ray flares observed in 3C 279. The total intensity and polarization observations of the source were carried out between December 28, 2013 and January 03, 2014 using the Fermi-LAT, Swift-XRT, Swift-UVOT, and KVN telescopes. A prominent flare observed in the optical/near-UV passbands was found to be correlated with a concurrent $γ$-ray flare at a confidence level $>$95$\%$, which suggests a co-spatial origin of the two. Moreover, the fla…
We report on the discovery of large-amplitude flickering from V648 Car (= SS73-17), a poorly studied object listed amongst the very few hard X-ray emitting symbiotic stars. We performed milli-magnitude precision optical photometry with the Swope Telescope at the Las Campanas Observatory, Chile, and found that V648 Car shows large U-band variability over time scales of minutes. To our knowledge, it is amongst the largest flickering of a symbiotic star ever reported. Our finding supports the hypothesis that symbiotic WDs producing hard X-rays are predominantly powered by accretion, rather than q…
Gamma radiation from the Crab pulsar wind nebula (PWN) shows significant variability at $\sim100$ MeV energies, recently revealed with spaceborne gamma-ray telescopes. Here we report the results of a systematic search for gamma-ray flares using a 7.4-year data set acquired with the Fermi Large Area Telescope. Analyzing the off-pulse phases of the Crab pulsar, we found seven previously unreported low-intensity flares ("small flares"). The "small flares'' originate from the variable synchrotron component of the Crab PWN and show clearly different features from the steady component of the Crab PW…
We report results on multiband observations from radio to gamma-rays of the two radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) galaxies PKS 2004-447 and J1548+3511. Both sources show a core-jet structure on parsec scale, while they are unresolved at the arcsecond scale. The high core dominance and the high variability brightness temperature make these NLSy1 galaxies good gamma-ray source candidates. Fermi-LAT detected gamma-ray emission only from PKS 2004-447, with a gamma-ray luminosity comparable to that observed in blazars. No gamma-ray emission is observed for J1548+3511. Both sources are variab…
Together, the Fermi-LAT and HESS have revealed the presence of an unusual GeV-TeV source coincident with Sgr A* at the Galactic center. Its high-energy emission appears to be bimodal, hinting at an energizing process more sophisticated than mere shock acceleration. It has been suggested that this may be evidence of strong, rapid variability, as required if Sgr A*'s emission were responsible for the fluorescent X-ray echos detected in nearby molecular clouds. In this {\it Letter}, however, we show that stochastic acceleration in a more realistic two-phase environment surrounding the central bla…
The Fermi Large Area Telescope receives $\ll$1 photon per rotation from any $γ$-ray pulsar. However, out of the billions of monitored rotations of the bright pulsars Vela (PSR~J0835$-$4510) and Geminga (PSR~J0633$+$1746), a few thousand have $\geq$2 pulsed photons. These rare pairs encode information about the variability of pulse amplitude and shape. We have cataloged such pairs and find the observed number to be in good agreement with simple Poisson statistics, limiting any amplitude variations to $<$19% (Vela) and $<$22% (Geminga) at 2$σ$ confidence. Using an array of basis functions to mod…
Considering about seven years of Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT) data, we present a systematic search for variability possibly related to transitions between states in redbacks and black widow systems. Transitions are characterized by sudden and significant changes in the gamma-ray flux that persist on a timescale much larger than the orbital period. This phenomenology was already detected in the case of two redback systems, PSR J1023+0038 and PSR J1227-4853, for which we present here a dedicated study. We show the existence of only one transition for each of these systems over the past seven…
We studied the X-ray timing and spectral variability of the X-ray source Sw J1644+57, a candidate for a tidal disruption event. We have separated the long-term trend (an initial decline followed by a plateau) from the short-term dips in the Swift light-curve. Power spectra and Lomb-Scargle periodograms hint at possible periodic modulation. By using structure function analysis, we have shown that the dips were not random but occurred preferentially at time intervals ~ [2.3, 4.5, 9] x 10^5 s and their higher-order multiples. After the plateau epoch, dipping resumed at ~ [0.7, 1.4] x 10^6 s and t…
Aims: Probe the high-energy ($>$60 MeV) emission from the black hole X-ray binary system, Cygnus X-1, and investigate its origin. Methods: We analysed 7.5 yr of data by Fermi/LAT with the latest PASS8 software version. Results: We report the detection of a signal at $\sim$8 $σ$ statistical significance spatially coincident with Cygnus X-1 and a luminosity above 60 MeV of 5.5$\times$10$^{33}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The signal is correlated with the hard X-ray flux: the source is observed at high energies only during the hard X-ray spectral state, when the source is known to display persistent, relativis…
The characterization of exoplanets, their formation, evolution, and chemical changes is tightly linked to our knowledge of their host stars. In particular, stellar X-rays and UV emission have a strong impact on the dynamical and chemical evolution of planetary atmospheres. We analyzed 25 XMM-Newton observations encompassing about eight years and totaling about 958 ks in order to study the X-ray emission of HD 189733 A. We find that the corona of HD 189733 A has an average temperature of 0.4 keV and it is only during flares that the mean temperature increases to 0.9 keV. Apart from the flares, …
Using simultaneous observations in X-rays and optical, we have performed a homogeneous analysis of the cross-correlation behaviours of four X-ray binaries: SWIFT J1753.5-0127, GX 339-4, Sco X-1, and Cyg X-2. With high time-resolution observations using ULTRACAM and RXTE, we concentrate on the short time-scale, dt<20 s, variability in these sources. Here we present our database of observations, with three simultaneous energy bands in both the optical and the X-ray, and multiple epochs of observation for each source, all with ~second or better time resolution. For the first time, we include a dy…
We report on quasi-periodic variability found in two blazars included in the Steward Observatory Blazar Monitoring data sample: the BL Lac object 3C 66A and the Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar B2 1633+38. We collect optical photometric and polarimetric data in V and R bands of these sources from different observatories: St. Petersburg University, Crimean Astrophysical Observatory, WEBT-GASP, Catalina Real-Time Transient Survey, Steward Observatory, STELLA Robotic Observatory and Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope. In addition, an analysis of the $γ$-ray light curves from $\textit{Fermi}$-LAT is in…
Ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) have been detected in the high-quality X-ray spectra of a number of active galactic nuclei (AGN) with fairly high accretion rates and are thought to significantly contribute to the AGN feedback. After a decade of dedicated study, their launching mechanisms and structure are still not well understood, but variability techniques may provide useful constraints. In this work, therefore, we perform a flux-resolved X-ray spectroscopy on a highly accreting and variable NLS1 AGN, 1H 0707-495, using all archival XMM-Newton observations to study the structure of the UFO. We fi…
The primary goal of this study is to observe how complex the behaviors of Cepheids can be, and to show how the continued monitoring of Cepheids at multiple wavelengths can begin to reveal their "secret lives." We aim to achieve this through optical photometry, UV spectroscopy and X-ray imaging. Through Villanova's guaranteed access to ground-based telescopes, we have secured well-covered light curves as regularly as possible. Amplitudes and times of max brightness were obtained and compared to previous literature results. At UV wavelengths, we have secured hi-res spectra of 2 nearby Cepheids -…
The Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxy REJ1034+396 is so far unique amongst AGN in showing a Quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in its variability power spectrum. There are multiple types of QPO seen in black hole binary (BHB) systems, so we need to identify which BHB QPO corresponds to the one seen in the AGN. A key hint is the `hot disc dominated' energy spectrum of REJ1034+396 which is sufficiently unusual that it suggests a mildly super-Eddington flow, also favoured by the most recent mass estimates for the AGN. This suggests the 67Hz QPO seen occasionally in the mildly super-Eddington BHB GRS 191…
We develop the power spectral density (PSD) model to explain the nature of the X-ray variability in IRAS 13224-3809, including the full effects of the X-ray reverberation due to the lamp-post source. We utilize 16 XMM-Newton observations individually as well as group them into three different luminosity bins: low, medium and high. The soft (0.3-1 keV) and hard (1.2-5 keV) PSD spectra are extracted and simultaneously fitted with the model. We find that the corona height changes from h ~ 3 $\ r_{\rm g}$ during the lowest luminosity state to ~ $25 \ r_{\rm g}$ during the highest luminosity state.…
We observed the double neutron star binary (DNSB) containing PSR J1537+1155 (also known as B1534+12) with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. This is one of the two DNSBs detected in X-rays and the only one where a hint of variability with orbital phase was found (in the previous Chandra observation). Our follow-up observation supports the earlier result: the distribution of photon arrival times with orbital phase again shows a deficit around apastron. The significance of the deficit in the combined dataset exceeds 99%. Such an orbital light-curve suggests that the X-ray emission is seen only when …
We present a detailed X-ray variability study of the low mass Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) NGC 7314 using the two newly obtained XMM-Newton observations ($140$ and $130$ ks), together with two archival data sets of shorter duration ($45$ and $84$ ks). The relationship between the X-ray variability characteristics and other physical source properties (such as the black hole mass) are still relatively poorly defined, especially for low-mass AGN. We perform a new, fully analytical, power spectral density (PSD) model analysis method, which will be described in detail in a forthcoming paper, that t…
We present the results from a multiwavelength study of the flaring activity in HBL, 1ES 1959+650, during January 2015-June 2016. The source underwent significant flux enhancements showing two major outbursts (March 2015 and October 2015) in optical, UV, X-rays and gamma-rays. Normally, HBLs are not very active but 1ES 1959+650 has shown exceptional outburst activity across the whole electromagnetic spectrum (EMS). We used the data from Fermi-LAT, Swift-XRT & UVOT and optical data from Mt. Abu InfraRed Observatory (MIRO) along with archival data from Steward Observatory to look for possible con…
The Fermi-LAT collaboration has recently reported that one of their detected sources, namely, 1FGL J1018.6-5856, is a new gamma-ray binary similar to LS 5039. This has prompted efforts to study its multi-frequency behavior. In this report, we present the results from 5.78-Ms INTEGRAL IBIS/ISGRI observations on the source 1FGL J1018.6-5856. By combining all the available INTEGRAL data, a detection is made at a significance level of 5.4 sigma in the 18-40 keV band, with an average intensity of 0.074 counts/s . However, we find that, there is non-statistical noise in the image that effectively re…
This Letter presents the first results from the observations of LSI +61 303 using Large Area Telescope data from the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope between 2008 August and 2009 March. Our results indicate variability that is consistent with the binary period, with the emission being modulated at 26.6 +/- 0.5 days. This constitutes the first detection of orbital periodicity in high-energy gamma rays (20 MeV-100 GeV, HE). The light curve is characterized by a broad peak after periastron, as well as a smaller peak just before apastron. The spectrum is best represented by a power law with an expo…
Beams of ultra-relativistic electrons in blazar jets develop pair cascades interacting with ambient soft photons. Employing coupled kinetic equations with escape terms, we model the unsaturated pair cascade spectrum. We assume that the gamma rays predominantly scatter off recombination-line photons from clouds photoionised by the irradiation from the accretion disk and the jet. The cascade spectrum is rather insensitive to the injection of hard electron spectra associated with the short-time variability of blazars. Adopting physical parameters representative of Markarian 501 and 3C 279, respec…
