The survival of time-reversal symmetry in the presence of strong multiple scattering lies at the heart of some of the most robust interference effects of light in complex media. Here, the use of time-reversed light paths for imaging in highly scattering environments is investigated. A common-path Sagnac interferometer is constructed which is able to detect objects behind a layer of strongly scattering material through up to 14 mean free paths total attenuation length. A spatial offset between the two light paths is used to suppress non-specific scattering contributions, limiting the signal to the volume of overlap. Scaling of the specific signal intensity indicates a transition from ballistic to quasi-ballistic contributions as the scattering thickness is increased. The characteristic frequency dependence for the coherent modulation signal provides a path length dependent signature, while the spatial overlap requirement allows for short-range 3D imaging. The technique of common-path, bistatic interferometry offers a conceptually novel approach which could open new applications in diverse areas such as medical imaging, machine vision, sensors, and lidar.
We report the spectral switch shift around spectral anomalies in a gyroscopic Sagnac interferometer which is normally used to calibrate the angular momentum of a gyroscope. The spectral shift in the rotating gyroscope is explained with respect to the longitudinal Doppler shift of the counter propagating beams in the Sagnac interferometer.
The ability to measure nanoradian polarization rotations, $θ_F$, in the photon shot noise limit is investigated for partially crossed polarizers (PCP), a static Sagnac interferometer and an optical bridge, each of which can in principal be used in this limit with near equivalent figures-of-merit (FOM). In practice a bridge to PCP/Sagnac source noise rejection ratio of $1/4θ_F^2$ enables the bridge to operate in the photon shot noise limit even at high light intensities. The superior performance of the bridge is illustrated via the measurement of a 3 nrad rotation arising from an axial magnetic…
A setup is proposed to enhance tracking of very small particles, by using optical tweezers embedded within a Sagnac interferometer. The achievable signal-to-noise ratio is shown to be enhanced over that for a standard optical tweezers setup. The enhancement factor increases asymptotically as the interferometer visibility approaches 100%, but is capped at a maximum given by the ratio of the trapping field intensity to the detector saturation threshold. For an achievable visibility of 99%, the signal-to-noise ratio is enhanced by a factor of 200, and the minimum trackable particle size is 2.4 ti…
We built an ultra low noise angle sensor by combining a folded optical lever and a Sagnac interferometer. The instrument has a measured noise floor of 1.3 prad / Hz^(1/2) at 2.4 kHz. We achieve this record angle sensitivity using a proof-of-concept apparatus with a conservative N=11 bounces in the optical lever. This technique could be extended to reach sub-picoradian / Hz^(1/2) sensitivities with an optimized design.
The non-reciprocity of Sagnac interferometer provides ultra-high sensitivity for parameter estimation and offers a wide range of applications, especially for optical fiber sensing. In this work, we study a new type of non-reciprocity existed in optical fiber Sagnac interferometer where the polarization dependent loss is taken into consideration. In particular, this non-reciprocity is irrelevant to the physical effects that being considered in previous studies, which originates from the geometric phases induced by continuous-weak-measurement. In consequence, it has a unique phenomenon of sudden…
The Sagnac Interferometer has historically been used for detecting non-reciprocal phenomena, such as rotation. We demonstrate an apparatus in which this technique is employed for high resolution measurements of the Magneto-Optical Polar Kerr effect--a direct indicator of magnetism. Previous designs have incorporated free-space components which are bulky and difficult to align. We improve upon this technique by using all fiber-optic coupled components and demonstrate operation at a new wavelength, 820 nm, with which we can achieve better than 1 $μ$rad resolution. Mounting the system on a piezo-…
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a single-mode fiber length and dispersion measurement system based on a novel frequency-shifted asymmetric Sagnac interferometer incorporating an acousto-optic modulator (AOM). By sweeping the driving frequency of the AOM, which is asymmetrically placed in the Sagnac loop, the optical length of the fiber can be determined by measuring the corresponding variation in the phase delay between the two counter-propagating light beams. Combined with a high-resolution data processing algorithm, this system yields a dynamic range from a few centimeters to 60km …
Measuring the positions of optical vortices is an essential part in the researches of speckles and adaptive optics. The measurement accuracy is restricted by the performance of optical devices and the properties of optical vortices, such as density and size. In order to achieve high accuracy and wide range of application, the dual shearing-type Sagnac interferometers is proposed using two shearing plates to adjust the precision of optical vortices measurement. The shearing displacements are able to balance the measuring precision and the value of the intensity ratio point to provide optimum me…
We present a set-up dedicated to the measurement of the small scalar directional anisotropies associated to the magnetochiral interaction. The apparatus, based on a polarization-independent fiber Sagnac interferometer, is optimized to be insensitive to circular anisotropies and to residual absorption. It can thus characterize samples of biological interests, for which the two enantiomers are not available and/or which present poor transmission. The signal-to-noise ratio is shown to be limited only by the source intensity noise, leading to a detection limit of Df = 500 nrad.Hz-1/2. It yields a …
An essential component of future quantum networks is an optical switch capable of dynamically routing single-photons. Here we implement such a switch, based on a fiber-optical Sagnac interferometer design. The routing is implemented with a pair of fast electro-optical telecom phase modulators placed inside the Sagnac loop, such that each modulator acts on an orthogonal polarization component of the single-photons, in order to yield polarization-independent capability that is crucial for several applications. We obtain an average extinction ratio of more than 19 dB between both outputs of the s…
Since the first atom interferometry experiments in 1991, measurements of rotation through the Sagnac effect in open-area atom interferometers has been studied. These studies have demonstrated very high sensitivity which can compete with state-of-the-art optical Sagnac interferometers. Since the early 2000s, these developments have been motivated by possible applications in inertial guidance and geophysics. Most matter-wave interferometers that have been investigated since then are based on two-photon Raman transitions for the manipulation of atomic wave packets. Results from the two most studi…
Dissipative optomechanics studies the coupling of the motion of an optical element to the decay rate of a cavity. We propose and theoretically explore a realization of this system in the optical domain, using a combined Michelson--Sagnac interferometer, which enables a strong and tunable dissipative coupling. Quantum interference in such a setup results in the suppression of the lower motional sideband, leading to strongly enhanced cooling in the non-sideband-resolved regime. With state-of-the-art parameters, ground-state cooling and low-power quantum-limited position transduction are both pos…
The greater confinement of light that is possible in photonic crystal fibres leads to a greater effective nonlin- earity, which promises to yield greater quantum squeezing than is possible in standard optical fibre. However, experimental work to date has not achieved improvements over standard fibre. We present a comprehensive numerical investigation of polarisation squeezing in photonic crystal fibre in a Sagnac configuration. By including loss, a non-instantaneous Raman response, excess phase-noise, second- and third-order dispersion and self-steepening, the simulations are able to identify …
Interferometers measure a wide variety of dynamic processes by converting a phase change into an intensity change. Nonlinear interferometers, making use of nonlinear media in lieu of beamsplitters, promise substantial improvement in the quest to reach the ultimate sensitivity limits. Here we demonstrate a new nonlinear interferometer utilizing a single parametric amplifier for mode mixing---conceptually, a nonlinear version of the conventional Michelson interferometer with its arms collapsed together. We observe up to 99.9\% interference visibility and find evidence for noise reduction based o…

We have constructed a counterpropagating optical tweezers setup embedded in a Sagnac interferometer in order to increase the sensitivity of position tracking for particles in the geometrical optics regime. Enhanced position determination using a Sagnac interferometer has previously been described theoretically by Taylor et al. [Journal of Optics 13, 044014 (2011)] for Rayleigh-regime particles trapped in an antinode of a standing wave. We have extended their theory to a case of arbitrarily-sized particles trapped with orthogonally-polarized counterpropagating beams. The working distance of the…
We use a Sagnac interferometer to measure the dispersive and absorptive properties of room temperature Rubidium vapor on the D_2 line at 780.2 nm. We apply a pump beam such that the resulting Lambda system exhibits Electromagnetically Induced Transparency. Using a "biased alignment" technique we demonstrate a direct and robust method of measuring the rapid variation in the refractive index. Such a "slow-light" Sagnac interferometer is ideally suited to precision measurement applications such as magnetometry and inertial sensing.

The Einstein Telescope (ET) is a proposed future gravitational wave detector. Its design is original, using a triangular orientation of three detectors and a xylophone configuration, splitting each detector into one high-frequency and one low-frequency system. In other aspects the current design retains the dual-recycled Michelson interferometer typical of current detectors, such as Advanced LIGO. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of replacing the low-frequency part of the ET detectors with a Sagnac interferometer. We show that a Sagnac interferometer, using realistic optical param…
We present a special-relativistic analysis of deformable interferometers where counter propagating beams share a common optical path. The optical path is allowed to change rather arbitrarily and need not be stationary. We show that, in the absence of dispersion the phase shift has two contributions. To leading order in $v/c$ one contribution is given by Wang empirical formula for deformable Sagnac interferometers. The second contribution is due to the stretching of the optical path and we give an explicit formula for this stretch term valid to first order in $v/c$. The analysis provides a unif…
The polarisation Sagnac speedmeter interferometer has the potential to replace the Michelson interferometer as the instrumental basis for future generations of ground-based gravitational wave detectors. The quantum noise benefit of this speedmeter is dependent on high-quality polarisation optics, the polarisation beam-splitter (PBS) and quarter-waveplate (QWP) optics that are key to this detector configuration and careful consideration of the effect of birefringence in the arm cavities of the interferometer. A PBS with an extinction ratio of better than 4000 in transmission and 700 in reflecti…
As a fundamental optical approach to interferometry, Sagnac interference has been widely used for reflection manipulation, precision measurements, and spectral engineering in optical systems. Compared to other interferometry configurations, it offers attractive advantages by yielding a reduced system complexity without the need for phase control between different pathways, thus offering a high degree of stability against external disturbance and a low wavelength dependence. The advance of integration fabrication techniques has enabled chip-scale Sagnac interferometers with greatly reduced foot…
With a Michelson interferometer using a phase-conjugate mirror (PCM) that reverses the uniform phase shift in a light path, we can conduct a first-order experiment of Special Relativity. Utilization of the PCM changes the basic concepts of an interference experiment. Placing a conventional partially reflecting mirror just in front of the PCM at the end of a light path, we can test the isotropy of the one-way speed of light in a system moving uniformly in a straight line and conduct the one-way Sagnac experiment. According to the reported phase-conjugate Sagnac experiment using a segment light …
We analyze the dynamic optomechanical back-action in signal-recycled Michelson and Michelson-Sagnac interferometers that are operated off dark port. We show that in this case --- and in contrast to the well-studied canonical form of dynamic back-action on dark port --- optical damping in a Michelson-Sagnac interferometer acquires a non-zero value on cavity resonance, and additional stability/instability regions on either side of the resonance, revealing new regimes of cooling/heating of micromechanical oscillators. In a free-mass Michelson interferometer for a certain region of parameters we p…
The second generation of large scale interferometric gravitational wave detectors will be limited by quantum noise over a wide frequency range in their detection band. Further sensitivity improvements for future upgrades or new detectors beyond the second generation motivate the development of measurement schemes to mitigate the impact of quantum noise in these instruments. Two strands of development are being pursued to reach this goal, focusing both on modifications of the well-established Michelson detector configuration and development of different detector topologies. In this paper, we pr…

We measure a transverse momentum kick in a Sagnac interferometer using weak-value amplification with two postselections. The first postselection is controlled by a polarization dependent phase mismatch between both paths of a Sagnac interferometer and the second postselection is controlled by a polarizer at the exit port. By monitoring the darkport of the interferometer, we study the complementary amplification of the concatenated postselections, where the polarization extinction ratio is greater than the contrast of the spatial interference. In this case, we find an improvement in the amplifi…

We analyze a fiber-optic gyroscope design enhanced by the injection of quantum-optical squeezed vacuum into a fiber-based Sagnac interferometer. In the presence of fiber loss, we compute the maximum attainable enhancement over a classical, laser-driven fiber-optic gyroscope in terms of the angular velocity estimate variance from a homodyne measurement. We find a constant enhancement factor that depends on the degree of squeezing introduced into the system but has diminishing returns beyond $10$--$15$ dB of squeezing. Under a realistic constraint of fixed total fiber length, we show that segmen…
The technique of almost-balanced weak values amplification (ABWV) was recently proposed [Phys. Rev. Lett. 116: 100803 (2016)]. We demonstrate this technique using a modified Sagnac interferometer, where the counter-propagating beams are spatially separated. The separation between the two beams provides additional amplification, with respect to using colinear beams in a Sagnac interferometer. As a demonstration of the technique, we perform measurements of the angular velocity in one of the mirrors of the interferometer. Within the same setup, the weak-value amplification technique is also perfo…
We experimentally demonstrate optical Mach-Zehnder interferometer utilizing displaced Sagnac configuration to enhance its phase stability. The interferometer with footprint of 27x40 cm offers individually accessible paths and shows phase deviation less than 0.4 deg during a 250 s long measurement. The phase drift, evaluated by means of Allan deviation, stays below 3 deg or 7 nm for 1.5 hours without any active stabilization. The polarization insensitive design is verified by measuring interference visibility as a function of input polarization. For both interferometer's output ports and all te…
The quantum state of light changes its nature when being reflected off a mechanical oscillator due to the latter's susceptibility to radiation pressure. As a result, a coherent state can transform into a squeezed state and can get entangled with the motion of the oscillator. The complete tomographic reconstruction of the state of light requires the ability to readout arbitrary quadratures. Here we demonstrate such a readout by applying a balanced homodyne detector to an interferometric position measurement of a thermally excited high-Q silicon nitride membrane in a Michelson-Sagnac interferome…
