Infinite-layer nickelate thin films materialize an intriguing new platform for high-temperature unconventional superconductivity, with LaNiO$_2$/SrTiO$_3$ as reference setup. We discuss the relative stability of the elementary interfaces of this system and determine the corresponding electronic band structure. We find substantial changes compared to the bulk, in particular in relation to the 5$d$ orbital contributions to the low-energy physics which can be totally replaced by purely Ni-3$d$ flat bands. The $d^9$ configuration characteristic of cuprates can thus be supplemented by an extra interfacial ingredient destabilizing the normal non-superconducting state in these heterostructures.
Based on first-principles calculations including a Coulomb repulsion term, we identify trends in the electronic reconstruction of $A$NiO$_2$/SrTiO$_3$(001) ($A=$ Pr, La) and $A$CuO$_2$/SrTiO$_3$(001) ($A=$ Ca, Sr). Common to all cases is the emergence of a quasi-two-dimensional electron gas (q2DEG) in SrTiO$_3$(001), albeit the higher polarity mismatch at the interface of nickelates vs. cuprates to the nonpolar SrTiO$_3(001)$ substrate (${3+}/0$ vs. ${2+}/0$) results in an enhanced q2DEG carrier density. The simulations reveal a significant dependence of the interfacial Ti $3d_{xy}$ band bendi…
Monolayer FeSe on SrTiO$_3$ superconducts with reported $T_\mathrm{c}$ as high as 100 K, but the dramatic interfacial $T_\mathrm{c}$ enhancement remains poorly understood. Oxygen vacancies in SrTiO$_3$ are known to enhance the interfacial electron doping, electron-phonon coupling, and superconducting gap, but the detailed mechanism is unclear. Here we apply scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) to FeSe/SrTiO$_3$ to image the diffusion of selenium into SrTiO$_3$ to an unexpected depth of several unit cells, consistent with the simultaneous…
Superconductivity has recently been observed in Sr-doped NdNiO2 films grown on SrTiO3. Whether it is caused by or related to the interface remains an open question. To address this issue, we use density functional theory calculation and charge transfer self-consistent model to study the effects of polar discontinuity on the electronic and atomic reconstruction at the NdNiO2/SrTiO3 interface. We find that sharp interface with pure electronic reconstruction only is energetically unfavorable, and atomic reconstruction is unavoidable. We further propose a possible interface configuration that cont…
The discovery of a two-dimensional (2D) electron gas at the (110)-oriented LaAlO3/SrTiO3 in- terface provided us with the opportunity to probe the effect of crystallographic orientation and the ensuing electronic reconstructions on interface properties beyond the conventional (001)-orientation. At temperatures below 200 mK, we have measured 2D superconductivity with a spatial extension significantly larger (d approx. 24 - 30 nm) than previously reported for (001)-oriented LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interfaces (d approx. 10 nm). The more extended superconductivity brings about the absence of violation of th…
We investigate the possibility of multi-band superconductivity in SrTiO$_{3}$ films and interfaces using a two-dimensional two-band model. In the undoped compound, one of the bands is occupied whereas the other is empty. As the chemical potential shifts due to doping by negative charge carriers or application of an electric field, the second band becomes occupied, giving rise to a strong enhancement of the transition temperature and a sharp feature in the gap functions, which is manifested in the local density of states spectrum. By comparing our results with tunneling experiments in Nb-doped …
We report on the discovery and transport study of the superconducting ground state present at the (111)LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface. The superconducting transition is consistent with a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition and its 2D nature is further corroborated by the anisotropy of the critical magnetic field, as calculated by Tinkham. The estimated superconducting layer thickness and coherence length are 10 nm and 60 nm, respectively. The results of this work provide a new platform to clarify the microscopic details of superconductivity at LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interfaces, in particula…
Caviglia et al. [Nature (London) 456, 624 (2008)] have found that the superconducting LaAlO_3 / SrTiO_3 interface can be gate modulated. A central issue is to determine the principal effect of the applied electric field. Using magnetotransport studies of a gated structure, we find that the mobility variation is almost five times as large as the sheet carrier density. Furthermore, superconductivity can be suppressed at both positive and negative gate bias. These results indicate that the relative disorder strength strongly increases across the superconductor-insulator transition.
A hysteretic in-plane magnetoresistance develops below the superconducting transition of LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interfaces for $\left|H_{/\!/}\right|<$ 0.15 T, independently of the carrier density or oxygen annealing. We show that this hysteresis arises from vortex depinning within a thin superconducting layer, in which the vortices are created by discrete ferromagnetic dipoles located solely above the layer. We find no evidence for finite-momentum pairing or bulk magnetism and hence conclude that ferromagnetism is strictly confined to the interface, where it competes with superconductivity.
The LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface provides a unique platform for controlling the electronic properties of the superconducting semiconductor SrTiO3. Prior investigations have shown that two-dimensional superconductivity can be produced at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface and tuned electrostatically. The recently demonstrated reversible control of the metal-insulator transition at the same interface using conductive atomic force microscopy (c-AFM) raises the question of whether this room-temperature technique can produce structures that exhibit superconducting, normal metallic and insulating phases at sub-…
At interfaces between complex oxides it is possible to generate electronic systems with unusual electronic properties, which are not present in the isolated oxides. One important example is the appearance of superconductivity at the interface between insulating oxides, although, until now, with very low Tc. We report the occurrence of high Tc superconductivity in the bilayer CaCuO2/SrTiO3, where both the constituent oxides are insulating. In order to obtain a superconducting state, the CaCuO2/SrTiO3 interface must be realized between the Ca plane of CaCuO2 and the TiO2 plane of SrTiO3. Only in…
We propose a kinetically driven mechanism based on the breaking of the spatial reflection symmetry to describe the magnetic moment and the torque observed by Lu-Li et al. (Ref. 1) for the $LaAlO_3/SrTiO_3$ system. We find that the itinerant electrons are in a zero helicity state and predict the existence of charge inhomogeneities that cross the interface at constant rate. There is mass and thickness anisotropies between the two sides of the interface.
Although discovered many decades ago, superconductivity in doped SrTiO$_{3}$ remains a topic of intense research. Recent experiments revealed that, upon increasing the carrier concentration, multiple bands cross the Fermi level, signaling the onset of Lifshitz transitions. Interestingly, $T_{c}$ was observed to be suppressed across the Lifshitz transition of oxygen-deficient SrTiO$_{3}$; a similar behavior was also observed in gated LaAlO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3}$ interfaces. Such a behavior is difficult to explain in the clean theory of two-band superconductivity, as the additional electronic states …
The interface superconductivity in LaAlO$_{3}$-SrTiO$_{3}$ heterostructures reveals a non-monotonic behavior of the critical temperature as a function of the two-dimensional density of charge carriers. We develop a theoretical description of interface superconductivity in strongly polar heterostructures, based on the dielectric function formalism. The density dependence of the critical temperature is calculated accounting for all phonon branches including different types of optical (interface and half-space) and acoustic phonons. The LO- and acoustic-phonon-mediated electron-electron interacti…
The effect of spatial inhomogeneity on the properties of a two-dimensional non-centrosymmetric superconductor in an in-plane magnetic field is investigated, as it can be realized in LaAlO_3-SrTiO_3 interfaces. We demonstrate that the spatial variation of Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC) yields a local magnetic flux pattern due to the field-induced inhomogeneous helical phase. For sufficiently strong fields, vortices can nucleate at inhomogeneities of the RSOC.
Superconductivity develops in bulk doped SrTiO$_3$ and at the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface with a dome-shaped density dependence of the critical temperature $T_c$, despite different dimensionalities and geometries. We propose that the $T_c$ dome of LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ is a shape resonance due to quantum confinement of superconducting bulk SrTiO$_3$. We substantiate this interpretation by comparing the exact solutions of a three-dimensional and quasi-two-dimensional two-band BCS gap equation. This comparison highlights the role of heavy bands for $T_c$ in both geometries. For bulk SrTiO$_3$, w…
The highly conductive two-dimensional electron gas formed at the interface between insulating SrTiO$_3$ and LaAlO$_3$ shows low-temperature superconductivity coexisting with inhomogeneous ferromagnetism. The Rashba spin-orbit interaction with in-plane Zeeman field of the system favors $p_x \pm i p_y$-wave superconductivity at finite momentum. Owing to the intrinsic disorder at the interface, the role of spatial inhomogeneity on the superconducting and ferromagnetic states becomes important. We find that for strong disorder, the system breaks up into mutually excluded regions of superconductivi…
The interface between two band insulators LaAlO$_3$ and SrTiO$_3$ exhibits low-temperature superconductivity coexisting with an in-plane ferromagnetic order. We show that topological superconductivity hosting Majorana bound states can be induced at the interface by applying a magnetic field perpendicular to the interface. We find that the dephasing effect of the in-plane magnetization on the topological superconducting state can be overcomed by tuning a gate-voltage. We analyze the vortex-core excitations showing the zero-energy Majorana bound states and the effect of non-magnetic disorder on …
Transition metal oxides display a great variety of quantum electronic behaviours where correlations often play an important role. The achievement of high quality epitaxial interfaces involving such materials gives a unique opportunity to engineer artificial structures where new electronic orders take place. One of the most striking result in this area is the recent observation of a two-dimensional electron gas at the interface between a strongly correlated Mott insulator LaTiO3 and a band insulator SrTiO3. The mechanism responsible for such a behaviour is still under debate. In particular, the…
The two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface exhibits gate tunable superconductivity with a domelike shape of $T_{\rm{C}}$ as a function of electron concentration. Here, we propose that the experimentally observed behavior can be explained as a direct effect of the dominant $extended$ $s$-$wave$ symmetry of the superconducting gap. Our results agree very well with the experimental data. As shown, neither the correlation effects nor the spin-orbit coupling influence significantly the physical picture of the paired state steaming out from our analysis.
We examine superconductivity in LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ channels in which the channel width transitions from the 1D to 2D regime. The superconducting critical current is independent of the channel width and increases approximately linearly with the number of parallel channels. Signatures of electron pairing outside of the superconducting phase are also independent of channel width. Collectively, these results indicate that electron pairing and superconductivity exist at the boundary of these channels and are absent within the interior region of the channels. The intrinsic 1D nature of superconduct…
