In this paper, the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of Zinc-blende Ga1-xVxSb compounds, with x from dilute doping situation to extreme doping limiting, were systematically investigated by first-principles calculations. V atoms prefer to substitute the Ga atoms and the formation energy is lower in Sb-rich than Ga-rich growth condition. Meantime, the SbGa antisite defects can effectively decrease the energy barrier of substitution process, from 0.85 eV to 0.53 eV. The diffusion of V atom in GaSb lattice is through meta-stable interstitial sites with an energy barrier of 0.6 eV. At a low V concentration x = 0.0625, V atoms prefer a homogeneous distribution and an antiferromagnetic coupling among them. However, starting from x = 0.5, the magnetic coupling among V atoms changes to be ferromagnetic, due to enhanced superexchange interaction between eg and t2g states of neighbouring V atoms. At the extreme limiting of x = 1.00, we found that Zinc-blende VSb as well as its analogs VAs and VP are intrinsic ferromagneitc semiconductors, with a large change of light absorption at the curie temperature. These results indicate that Ga1-xVxSb compounds can provide a platform to design the new electronic, spintronic and optoelectronic devices.
Magnetic two-dimensional (2D) materials have received tremendous attention recently due to its potential application in spintronics and other magnetism related fields. To our knowledge, five kinds of 2D materials with intrinsic magnetism have been synthesized in experiment. They are CrI3, Cr2Ge2Te6, FePS3, Fe3GeTe2 and VSe2. Apart from the above intrinsic magnetic 2D materials, many strategies have also been proposed to induce magnetism in normal 2D materials such as atomic modification, spin valve and proximity effect. Various devices have also been designed to fulfill the basic functions of …
This work presents results for the magnetic properties of the compound GeTe doped with 3d transition metals V, Cr and Mn from the viewpoint of potential application in spintronics. We report a systematic density-functional study of the electronic structure, magnetic and cohesive properties of these ternary compounds in both rock salt and zinc blende structures. In both cases, it is the Ge sublattice that is doped with the three transition metals. Some of these compounds are found to be half-metallic at their optimized cell volumes. For these particular cases, we calculate both exchange interac…
Spinel compound, MgV$_2$O$_4$, known as a highly frustrated magnet has been extensively studied both experimentally and theoretically for its exotic quantum magnetic states. However, due to its intrinsic insulating nature in its antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state, its realistic applications in spintronics are quite limited. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we examine the ferromagnetic (FM) phase of MgV$_2$O$_4$, which was found to host three-dimensional flat band (FB) right near the Fermi level, consequently yielding a large anomalous Hall effect (AHE, $σ\approx 670\,Ω^{-1}\cdot…
Existence of ferromagnetism in bulk calcium compounds is discovered theoretically. First-principles calculations of calcium phosphide, calcium arsenide and calcium antimonide in the zinc-blende structure have been performed to show the half-metallic ground state in each optimized stable structure. Magnetism comes from spin-polarization of electrons in $p$-orbitals of P, As or Sb and $d$-orbitals of calcium atoms. The half-metallicity is analogous to the half-metallic zinc-blende compounds, {\it e.g.} CrAs or CrSb, but the predicted compounds become ferromagnetic without transition metals. In (…
Magnetic materials and nanostructures based on carbon offer unique opportunities for future technological applications such as spintronics. This article reviews graphene-derived systems in which magnetic correlations emerge as a result of reduced dimensions, disorder and other possible scenarios. In particular, zero-dimensional graphene nanofragments, one-dimensional graphene nanoribbons, and defect-induced magnetism in graphene and graphite are covered. Possible physical mechanisms of the emergence of magnetism in these systems are illustrated with the help of computational examples based on …
Based on density functional calculations, the relationship between magnetism or superconductivity and electronic states around Fermi level were derived, and the location of the Fermi level in nonmagnetic "form" of Laves-phase compounds is very sensitive to determine the presence of nonmagnetism, or ferromagnetism, or antiferromagnetism, or superconductivity. The Fermi level at the nonbonding and antibonding regions corresponds for the nonmagnetism and magnetism, respectively, whereas at bonding region with responsibility for superconductivity. This rules will be very useful and convenient to s…
Controlling magnetism and electronic properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials by purely electrical means is crucial and highly sought for high-efficiency spintronics devices since electric field can be easily applied locally compared with magnetic field. The recently discover 2D Janus crystals has provide a new platform for nanoscale electronics and spintronics due to their broken inversion symmetry nature. The intrinsic ferromagnetic Jauns monolayer, and hence the tunable physical properties, is therefore of great interest. Here, through comprehensive density functional theory calculation…
The half-metallic properties of a new and promising full-Heusler compound, Zr2CoSn, are investigated by means of ab initio calculations within the Density Functional Theory framework. The ferromagnetic ordered Hg2CuTi-type crystal structure is energetically favorable and the optimized lattice parameter is 6.76 A. The total magnetic moment calculated is 3 uB/f.u. and follows a typical Slater-Pauling dependence. The half metallicity disappears if the unit cell volume is contracted by 5 %.
We have used single crystal X-ray diffraction methods to establish the crystal structures of a compound in the Pd-Mn-Si system and in the Pd-Mn-Ge system. The title compounds have structures related to the Fe$_2$P structure type and are ferromagnetic with Curie temperatures above the room temperature. Density functional electronic structure calculations help to understand the nature of the local moment ferromagnetism in these compounds. However neither the electronic structure calculations nor the magnetic measurements provide any evidence of half-metallic behavior.
Electronic structures of MC where M is the alkali and alkaline earth metals with the rocksalt structure are calculated by full potential density functional codes. We find that the spin magnetic moment in the compounds is mainly contributed by the spin polarized p-orbitals of carbon. The large distance between the carbon makes the p-orbitals localized, which induces magnetic instability according to the Stoner criterion. The electronic structure can be mapped to the rigid band model. SrC, BaC and RaC are half-metals, while KC, RbC and CsC are magnetic semiconductors
Using results of the band structure calculations in the local-spin-density approximation we demonstrate how the crystal distortions affect the magnetic structure of orthorhombically distorted perovskites leading to a non-collinear spin arrangement. Our results suggest that the non-collinearity of the spin magnetic moments, being generally small in La$M$O$_3$ series with $M$=Cr-Fe, is large in SrRuO$_3$.
To achieve a large terahertz (THz) amplitude from a spintronic THz emitter (STE), materials with 100\% spin polarisation such as Co-based Heusler compounds as the ferromagnetic layer are required. However, these compounds are known to loose their half-metallicity in the ultrathin film regime, as it is difficult to achieve L2$_1$ ordering, which has become a bottleneck for the film growth. Here, the successful deposition using room temperature DC sputtering of the L2$_1$ and B2 ordered phases of the Co$_2$FeAl full Heusler compound is reported. Co$_2$FeAl is used as ferromagnetic layer together…
The research landscape of magnetism has been recently enriched by the discovery of altermagnetism. It is an unconventional phase of matter characterized by a d-wave (or higher even-parity-wave) collinear compensated spin ordering, which enables strongly spin-polarized currents in the absence of magnetization, and features fast spin dynamics. Simultaneously, on the applied magnetism front, spintronic memories based on conventional ferromagnets are currently turning from a niche to a mass produced integrated-circuit technology as they start to complement semiconductors on advanced-node microproc…
C14 Nb(Fe89.4Al10.6)2 Laves phase intermetallic compound was investigated by DC magnetization (M) measurements performed in the temperature (T) interval of 20 to 175 K,under an applied magnetic field (H) ranging between 50 and 1250 Oe. Magnetization curves were recorded in the field-cooled (FC) and in the zero-field-cooled (ZFC) modes. They clearly showed an irreversible character that vanished at H=1250 Oe. Both magnetization curves exhibited well-defined peaks around T_N =72.3 K whose positions were H-independent, so they were identified as the compound's Néel temperature. The existence of i…
We report the effect of La-substitution on the magnetic and magnetotransport properties of Brownmillerite-like bilayered compounds Ca2.5-xLaxSr0.5GaMn2O8 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.075, and 0.1) by using dc-magnetization, resistivity and magnetoresistance techniques. The Rietveld analysis of the room temperature x-ray diffraction patterns confirms no observable change of average crystal structure with the La-substitution. Both magnetic and magnetotransport properties are found to be very sensitive to the La-substitution. Interestingly, the La-substituted compounds show ferromagnetic-like behavior (due to…
Magnetism in transition metal compounds is usually considered starting from a description of isolated ions, as exact as possible, and treating their (exchange) interaction at a later stage. We show that this standard approach may break down in many cases, especially in $4d$ and $5d$ compounds. We argue that there is an important intersite effect -- an orbital-selective formation of covalent metal-metal bonds, which leads to an "exclusion" of corresponding electrons from the magnetic subsystem, and thus strongly affects magnetic properties of the system. This effect is especially prominent for …
A quasi one-dimensional compound, Ca3CuRuO6, has been synthesized by solid-state reaction method and studied using magnetization (M) and heat capacity (C) measurements. This compound undergoes magnetic ordering (T_o) around 40 K, as evidenced by the dc magnetic susceptibility (chi) behavior. However, the magnitude of the paramagnetic Curie temperature (theta_p) obtained from the high temperature linear region is large (-277 K, with the negative sign indicating antiferromagnetic interaction). The reduction of T_o, compared to theta_p, is attributed to geometrical frustration effect arising from…
The first successful measurements of a sub-lattice magnetism with 51V NMR techniques in the sigma-phase Fe(100-x)Vx alloys with x = 34.4, 39.9 and 47.9 are reported. Vanadium atoms present on all five crystallographic sites are magnetic. Their magnetic properties are characteristic of a given site, which strongly depend on the composition. The strongest magnetism exhibit sites A and the weakest one sites D. The estimated average magnetic moment per V atom decreases from 0.36 muB for x = 34.4 to 0.20 muB for x = 47.9. The magnetism revealed at V atoms is linearly correlated with the magnetic mo…
We report on the first integration of an antiferromagnetic Heusler compound acting as a pinning layer into magnetic tunneling junctions. The antiferromagnet Ru$_2$MnGe is used to pin the magnetization direction of a ferromagnetic Fe layer in MgO based thin film tunnelling magnetoresistance stacks. The samples were prepared using magnetron co-sputtering. We investigate the structural properties by X-ray diffraction and reflection, as well as atomic force and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. We find an excellent crystal growth quality with low interface roughnesses of 1-3 Å, whi…
Among the members of the series R2PdSi3 (R= Rare-earths), the magnetic behavior of the Nd compound is interesting in some respects. This compound is considered to order ferromagnetically (below 16 K), unlike other members of this series which order antiferromagnetically. In addition, magnetic ordering temperature (To) is significantly enhanced with respect to de Gennes scaled value. In order to understand the magnetism of this compound better, we have investigated the magnetic behavior in detail (under external pressure as well) and also of its solid solutions based on substitutions at Nd and …
Optical methods for magnetism manipulation have been considered as a promising strategy for ultralow-power and ultrahigh-speed spin switches, which becomes a hot spot in the field of spintronics. However, a widely applicable and efficient method to combine optical operation with magnetic modulation is still highly desired. Here, the strongly correlated electron material VO2 is introduced to realize phase-transition based optical control of the magnetism in NiFe. The NiFe/VO2 bilayer heterostructure features appreciable modulations in electrical conductivity (55%), coercivity (60%), and magneti…
A comprehensive study of the total energy of manganese-rich Heusler compounds using density functional theory is presented. Starting from a large set of cubic parent systems, the response to tetragonal distortions is studied in detail. We single out the systems that remain cubic from those that most likely become tetragonal. The driving force of the tetragonal distortion and its effect on the magnetic properties, especially where they deviate from the Slater--Pauling rule, as well as the trends in the Curie temperatures, are highlighted. By means of partial densities of states, the electronic …
First principles FPLAPWcalculations were performed in the framework of Density Functional Theory (DFT), to study the electronic structures and magnetic properties for the new full-Heusler compounds: Sc2CoZ (Z=Si, Ge, Sn). The investigated materials are stable against decomposition, in ferromagnetic configuration and crystallize in the inverse Heusler structures. The half-metallic properties as function of the variation of unit cell volumes are analysed regarding the fourth main group constituent elements. The electronic structure calculations for Sc2CoSi and Sc2CoSn show half-metallic characte…
The field of spin electronics (spintronics) was initiated by the discovery of giant magnetoresistance (GMR) for which Fert[1] and Grunberg[2] were awarded the 2007 Nobel Prize for Physics. GMR arises from differential scattering of the majority and minority spin electrons by a ferromagnet (FM) so that the resistance when the FM layers separated by non-magnetic (NM) spacers are aligned by an applied field is different to when they are antiparallel. In 1996 Slonczewski[3] and Berger[4] predicted that a large spin-polarised current could transfer spin-angular momentum and so exert a spin transfer…
A new ternary intermetallic compound, namely, YbMn2Sb2, has been synthesized and its magnetic and electrical transport properties have been studied in the temperature range of 2 to 300 K. This compound crystallizes in a trigonal, La2O2S type structure (space group P3bm1, No. 164) and is found to be ferromagnetically ordered at room temperature. The magnetism is attributed to the ordering of Mn sublattice. M5 xray absorption spectrum of YbMn2Sb2 obtained at room temperature suggests that the valency of Yb in this compound is close to 2. Electrical resistivity of this compound is metal like and …
The temperature dependent stability of the magnetic phases of FeRh were investigated by means of total energy calculations with magnetic disorder treated within the uncompensated disordered local moment (uDLM) approach. In addition, Monte Carlo simulations based on the extended Heisenberg model have been performed, using exchange coupling parameters obtained rom first principles. The crucial role and interplay of two factors in the metamagnetic transition in FeRh has been revealed, namely the dependence of the Fe-Fe exchange coupling parameters on the temperature-governed degree of magnetic di…
We report on the electronic and optical properties of two theoretically predicted stable spinel compounds of the form ZnB2O4, where B = Ni or Cu; neither compound has been previously synthesized, so we compare them to the previously studied p-type ZnCo2O4 spinel. These new materials exhibit spin polarization that is ideal for spintronics applications, and broad conductivity maxima near the valence band edge that facilitate p-type dopability. We show that 3d electrons on the octahedrally coordinated Zn atom fall deep within the valence band and do not contribute significantly to the electronic …
By virtue of the itinerant electron metamagnetism (IEM), the RCo2 compounds with R=Er, Ho and Dy are found to show first order magnetic transition at their ordering temperatures. The inherent instability of Co sublattice magnetism is responsible for the occurrence of IEM, which leads to interesting magnetic and related properties. The systematic studies of the variations in the magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of the RCo2-based compounds show that the magnetovolume effect plays a decisive role in determining the nature of magnetic transitions and hence the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in …
Two-dimensional (2D) materials with robust magnetism have drawn immense attention for their promising applications in spintronics. Recently, intrinsic ferromagnetic vanadium triiodide (VI3) has been synthesized experimentally. To enhance its spintronic property, we modified VI3 by interstitial doping with 3d transition metals (TM) and used first-principles calculations to investigate the geometric structure, formation energy, electronic property, and magnetism of pristine VI3 and 3d TM-doped VI3 monolayer. Among eight transition metal (Sc-, Ti-, V-, Cr-, Mn-, Fe-, Co-, and Ni-) doped VI3 mater…
In the work the analysis of crystal chemical researches of nickel borocarbides RNi2B2C (R = rare earth) is given. The reasons of representation of dependence of Tc from crystal chemical parameters by two separate curves for magnetic and nonmagnetic R are considered. Common for all R dependences of Tc from crystal chemical parameters similar existing in layered quasi-two-dimensional systems (HTSC cuprates and diborides) are established. The absence of influence on borocarbides Tc of magnetic properties R is determined. On the basis of the found correlations the radii of a number of rare earths …

The formation energy per atom of ea…
We address the possibility of non-magnetic doping induced magnetism, in Li doped SnO2 nano-particles. The compounds have been prepared by solid state route at equilibrium and were found to be crystallized in single rutile phase. The magnetization measurements have shown that Li-doping induces magnetism in SnO2 for a particular range of Li concentration. However, for other Li concentrations, including pure SnO2, the samples exhibit diamagnetism. To investigate the possible origin of the induced magnetism, we have studied the variation of the magnetization as a function of the average nano-parti…
Here, we systematically investigate the structure, phase stability, half-metallicity, and topological electronic structure for a new topological spintronic material NaV2O4. The material has a tetragonal structure with excellent dynamical and thermal stabilities. It shows a half-metallic ground state, where only the spin-up bands present near the Fermi level. These bands form a Weyl nodal line close to the Fermi level, locating in the kz = 0 plane. The nodal line is robust against SOC, under the protection of the mirror symmetry. The nodal line band structure is very clean, thus the drumhead su…
Layered transition-metal compounds with controllable magnetic behaviors provide many fascinating opportunities for the fabrication of high-performance magneto-electric and spintronic devices. The tuning of their electronic and magnetic properties is usually limited to the change of layer thickness, electrostatic doping, and the control of electric and magnetic fields. However, pressure has been rarely exploited as a control parameter for tailoring their magneto-electric properties. Here, we report a unique pressure-driven isostructural phase transition in layered CrCl3 accompanied by a simulta…
B20 compounds are the playground for various non-trivial magnetic textures such as skyrmions, which are topologically protected states. Recent measurements on B20-MnGe indicate no clear consensus on its magnetic behavior, which is characterized by the presence of either spin-spirals or 3-dimensional objects interpreted to be a cubic lattice of hedgehogs and anti-hedgehogs. Utilizing a massively parallel linear scaling all-electron density functional algorithm, we find from full first-principles simulations on cells containing thousands of atoms that upon increase of the compound volume, the st…
RuGe, a diamagnetic small-band gap semiconductor, and CoGe, a nonmagnetic semimetal, are both isostructural to the Kondo insulator FeSi and the skyrmion lattice host MnSi. Here, we have explored the magnetic and transport properties of Co-doped RuGe: Ru$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Ge. For small values of $x$, a magnetic ground state emerges with $T_{c}\approx$ 5 $-$ 9 K, which is accompanied by a moderate decrease in electrical resistivity and a Seebeck coefficient that indicates electron-like charge carriers. The magnetization, magnetoresistance, and the specific heat capacity all resemble that of Fe$_{1-x}…
We present first-principles density functional calculations of the electronic structure, magnetism, and structural stability of 378 $\textit{XYZ}$ half-Heusler compounds (with $X=$ Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Ru, Rh, $Y=$ Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, $Z=$ Al, Ga, In, Si, Ge, Sn, P, As, Sb). We find that a "Slater-Pauling density of states" with a gap or pseudogap at three states per atom below the gap in at least one spin channel is a common feature in half-Heusler compounds. We find that the presence of such a gap at the Fermi energy in one or both spin channels contributes greatly to the stability of a ha…
Polycrystalline samples of the half-metallic ferromagnet Heusler compound Co$_2$TiSn have been prepared and studied using bulk techniques (X-ray diffraction and magnetization) as well as local probes ($^{119}$Sn Mössbauer spectroscopy and $^{59}$Co nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy) in order to determine how disorder affects half-metallic behavior and also, to establish the joint use of Mössbauer and NMR spectroscopies as a quantitative probe of local ion ordering in these compounds. Additionally, density functional electronic structure calculations on ordered and partially disordered Co…

Our calculations indicate that some of these compounds are not only ferromagnetic but also half-metallic and may be useful for spintronics applications. The electronic structure of the doped systems is analyzed with the aid of a simple model where we…
By first principles calculations, we demonstrate that when decorated with photochromic molecules, it is possible to use light to reversibly control the magnetic properties of a nanoscale magnetic system. The combination of a graphene-based magnetic system and a photochromic azobenzene molecule is chosen as a model system. The {\it trans} and {\it cis} isomers of the azobenzene molecule that can be converted between each other by means of photoexcitations are found to have drastically different effects on the magnetic properties of the system. The results may pave the way for the future design …
Voltage modulation of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) with compactness, high speed response, energy efficiency and both practical/theoretical siginificances can be widely applied to various YIG based spintronics such as spin Hall, spin pumping, spin Seeback effects. Here we initial an ionic modulation of interfacial magnetism process on YIG/Pt bilayer heterostructures, where the Pt capping would influence the ferromagnetic (FMR) field position significantly, and realize a significant magnetism enhancement in bilayer system. A large voltage induced FMR field shifts of 690 Oe has been achieved in YIG …
Topological magnetism typically appears in noncentrosymmetric compounds or compounds with geometric frustration. The magnetism is found to be closely coupled to the transport properties, giving rise to to a very large topological hall effect is possibly associated with topological magnetism. Our finding suggests Mn2-xZnxSb is a candidate material for the centrosymmetric tetragonal topological magnetic system, offers opportunities for studying and tuning spin textures and developing nea…

Theoretical research suggests that such metal-free magnetism mainly comes from the localized states or edges states. By applying external electric field, or by …
