The nature of the Sombrero galaxy (M 104 = NGC 4594) has remained elusive despite many observational studies at a variety of wavelengths. Here we present Hubble Space Telescope imaging of two fields at $\sim$16 and 33 kpc along the minor axis to examine stellar metallicity gradients in the extended spheroid. We use this imaging, extending more than 2 mag below the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB), in combination with artificial star tests to forward model observed color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), measuring metallicity distribution functions (MDFs) at different radii along the minor axis. An important and unexpected result is that the halo of the Sombrero is strikingly metal-rich: even the outer field, located at $\sim$17 effective radii of the bulge, has a median metallicity [Z/H]$\sim$-0.15 and the fraction of stars with [Z/H]<-1.0 is negligible. This is unprecedented among massive galaxy halos studied to date, even among giant ellipticals. We find significant radial metallicity gradients, characterized by an increase in the fraction of metal-poor stars with radius and a gradient in median metallicity of $\sim$-0.01 dex/kpc. The density profile is well fit by power laws with slopes that exhibit a dependence on metallicity, with flatter slopes for more metal-poor stars. We discuss our results in the context of recent stellar MDF studies of other nearby galaxies and potential formation scenarios for the Sombrero galaxy.
We have classified possible transonic solutions of galactic outflows in the gravitational potential of the dark matter halo (DMH) and super massive black hole (SMBH) under the assumptions of isothermal, spherically symmetric and steady state. It is clarified that the gravity of SMBH adds a new branch of transonic solutions with the transonic point in very close proximity to the centre in addition to the outer transonic point generated by the gravity of DMH. Because these two transonic solutions have substantially different mass fluxes and starting points, these solutions may have different inf…
Recent evidence of extremely metal-rich stars found in the Sombrero galaxy (M104) halo suggests that this galaxy has undergone a recent major merger with a relatively massive galaxy. In this paper, we present wide-field deep images of the M104 outskirts obtained with a 18-cm amateur telescope with the purpose of detecting any coherent tidal features from this possible major merger. Our new data, together with a model of the M104 inner halo and scattered light from stars around the field, allow us to trace for the first time the full path of the stream on both sides of the disk of the galaxy. W…
We have obtained radial velocity measurements for 51 new globular clusters around the Sombrero galaxy. These measurements were obtained using spectroscopic observations from the AAOmega spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope and the Hydra spectrograph at WIYN. Combined with our own past measurements and velocity measurements obtained from the literature we have constructed a large database of radial velocities that contains a total of 360 confirmed globular clusters. Previous studies' analyses of the kinematics and mass profile of the Sombrero globular cluster system have been constrai…
We study fundamental properties of isothermal, steady and spherically symmetric galactic outflow in the gravitational potential of a cold dark matter halo and a central super-massive black hole. We find that there are two transonic solutions having different properties: each solution is mainly produced by the dark matter halo and the super-massive black hole, respectively. Furthermore, we apply our model to the Sombrero galaxy. In this galaxy, Chandra X-ray observatory detected the diffuse hot gas as the trace of galactic outflows while the star-formation rate is low and the observed gas densi…
Satellite galaxies in rich clusters are subject to numerous physical processes that can significantly influence their evolution. However, the typical L* satellite galaxy resides in much lower mass galaxy groups, where the processes capable of altering their evolution are generally weaker and have had less time to operate. To investigate the extent to which satellite and central galaxy evolution differs, we separately model the stellar mass - halo mass (M* -Mh) relation for these two populations over the redshift interval 0 < z < 1. This relation for central galaxies is constrained by the galax…
M104 (NGC 4594, the Sombrero galaxy) is a mysterious massive early-type galaxy that shows a dominant bulge and a prominent disk. However, the presence of a halo in M104 has been elusive, and it is not yet known how M104 has acquired such a peculiar structure. Using wide ($\sim2$ deg$^2$) and deep $ugi$ images of M104 obtained with the CFHT/MegaCam, we detect a large number of globular clusters (GCs) found out to $R\approx35'$ ($\sim100$ kpc). The color distribution of these GCs shows two subpopulations: a blue (metal-poor) system and a red (metal-rich) system. The total number of GCs is estima…
The hierarchical structure formation model predicts that stellar halos should form, at least partly, via mergers. If this was a predominant formation channel for the Milky Way's halo, imprints of this merger history in the form of moving groups or streams should exist also in the vicinity of the Sun. Here we study the kinematics of halo stars in the Solar neighbourhood using the very recent first data release from the Gaia mission, and in particular the TGAS dataset, in combination with data from the RAVE survey. Our aim is to determine the amount of substructure present in the phase-space dis…
We present new stellar mass functions at $z\sim6$, $z\sim7$, $z\sim8$, $z\sim9$ and, for the first time, $z\sim10$, constructed from $\sim800$ Lyman-Break galaxies previously identified over the XDF/UDF, parallels and the five CANDELS fields. Our study is distinctive due to (1) the much deeper ($\sim200$ hour) wide-area Spitzer/IRAC imaging at $3.6μ$m and $4.5μ$m from the GOODS Re-ionization Era wide Area Treasury from Spitzer (GREATS) program and (2) consideration of $z\sim6-10$ sources over a $3\times$ larger area than previous HST+Spitzer studies. The Spitzer/IRAC data enable $\ge2σ$ rest-f…
We present deep ACS images of 3 fields in the edge-on disk galaxy NGC 891, which extend from the plane of the disk to 12 kpc, and out to 25 kpc along the major axis. The photometry of individual stars reaches 2.5 magnitudes below the tip of the RGB. We use the astrophotometric catalogue to probe the stellar content and metallicity distribution across the thick disk and spheroid of NGC 891. The CMDs of thick disk and spheroid population are dominated by old RGB stars with a wide range of metallicities, from a metal-poor tail at [Fe/H] ~ -2.4 dex, up to about half-solar metallicity. The peak of …
Semi-analytic models (SAMs) are a promising means of tracking the physical processes associated with galaxy formation, but many of their approximations have not been rigorously tested. As part of the SMAUG (Simulating Multiscale Astrophysics to Understand Galaxies) project, we compare predictions from the FIRE-2 hydrodynamical "zoom-in" simulations to those from the Santa Cruz SAM run on the same halo merger trees, with an emphasis on the global mass flow cycle. Our study includes 13 halos spanning low-mass dwarfs (M_vir~10^10 M_sun at z=0), intermediate-mass dwarfs (M_vir~10^11 M_sun) and Mil…
The spectral energy distribution of a galaxy emerges from the complex interplay of many physical ingredients, including its star formation history (SFH), metallicity evolution, and dust properties. Using GALAXPY, a new galaxy spectral prediction tool, and SFHs predicted by the empirical model UNIVERSEMACHINE and the cosmological hydrodynamical simulation IllustrisTNG, we isolate the influence of SFH on optical and near-infrared colours from 3200 to 10800 Å at z=0. By carrying out a principal component analysis, we show that physically-motivated SFH variations modify galaxy colours along a sing…
We present chemical abundances and velocities of five stars between 0.3 kpc to 1.1 kpc from the center of the Tucana II ultra-faint dwarf galaxy (UFD) from high-resolution Magellan/MIKE spectroscopy. We find that every star is deficient in metals (-3.6 < [Fe/H] < -1.9) and in neutron-capture elements as is characteristic of UFD stars, unambiguously confirming their association with Tucana II. Other chemical abundances (e.g., C, iron-peak) largely follow UFD trends and suggest that faint core-collapse supernovae (SNe) dominated the early evolution of Tucana II. We see a downturn in [$α$/Fe] at …
We present the ~800 star formation rate maps for the SAMI Galaxy Survey based on Hα emission maps, corrected for dust attenuation via the Balmer decrement, that are included in the SAMI Public Data Release 1. We mask out spaxels contaminated by non-stellar emission using the [O III]/Hβ, [N II]/Hα, [S II]/Hα, and [O I]/Hα line ratios. Using these maps, we examine the global and resolved star-forming main sequences of SAMI galaxies as a function of morphology, environmental density, and stellar mass. Galaxies further below the star-forming main sequence are more likely to have flatter star forma…
