In this paper, we study the thermodynamic features of a rotating black hole surrounded by perfect fluid dark matter. We analyze the critical behavior of the black hole by considering the known relationship between pressure and cosmological constant. We show that the black hole admits a first order phase transition and, both rotation and perfect fluid dark matter parameters have a significant impact on the critical quantities. We also introduce a new ad hoc pressure related to the perfect fluid dark matter and find a first order van der Waals like phase transition. In addition, using the sixth order WKB method, we investigate the massless scalar quasinormal modes (QNMs) for the static spherically symmetric black hole surrounded by dark matter. Using the finite difference scheme, the dynamical evolution of the QNMs is also discussed for different values of angular momentum and overtone parameters.
We present results from numerical solution of Einstein's equation in five dimensions describing evolution of rapidly rotating black holes. We show, for the first time, that the rapidly rotating black holes in higher dimensions are unstable against nonaxisymmetric deformation; for the five-dimensional case, the critical value of spin parameter for onset of the instability is $\approx 0.87$.
We study the Gregory-Laflamme instability of a 5-dimensional slowly rotating black string in which the 4-dimensional section is described by the Kerr black hole. We treat the rotation in a perturbative way introducing a small parameter for the rotation. It is found that rotation makes the Gregory-Laflamme instability stronger. Both the critical wavelength at the onset of instability and the growth time-scale are found to decrease as the rotation increases.
We investigate the stability of $f(R)$-rotating (Kerr) black hole obtained from a limited form of $f(R)$ gravity. In order to avoid the difficulty of handling fourth order linearized equations, we transform this form of $f(R)$ gravity into the scalar-tensor theory by introducing two auxiliary scalars. In this case, the linearized curvature scalar equation leads to a massive scalaron equation. It turns out that the $f(R)$-rotating black hole is unstable because of the superradiant instability known as the black-hole bomb idea.
It has been conjectured that higher-dimensional rotating black holes become unstable at a sufficiently large value of the rotation, and that new black holes with pinched horizons appear at the threshold of the instability. We search numerically, and find, the stationary axisymmetric perturbations of Myers-Perry black holes with a single spin that mark the onset of the instability and the appearance of the new black hole phases. We also find new ultraspinning Gregory-Laflamme instabilities of rotating black strings and branes.
We obtain a new class of rotating black holes for Einstein theory with perfect fluid source in (2+1) dimensions. We conclude that these black hole solutions only depend on variable angular velocity $m(r)$. Some examples of these black holes are given explicitly. In particular, the unknown static black hole in this special background is obtained. In addition, the general properties including the horizon structure, energy conditions and equation of state, mass and angular momentum are explained in detail.
We present the first example of a linearized gravitational instability of an asymptotically flat vacuum black hole. We study perturbations of a Myers-Perry black hole with equal angular momenta in an odd number of dimensions. We find no evidence of any instability in five or seven dimensions, but in nine dimensions, for sufficiently rapid rotation, we find perturbations that grow exponentially in time. The onset of instability is associated with the appearance of time-independent perturbations which generically break all but one of the rotational symmetries. This is interpreted as evidence for…
We investigate the stability of $D$ dimensional singly rotating Myers-Perry-AdS black holes under superradiance against scalar field perturbations. It is well known that small four dimensional rotating or charged Anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes are unstable against superradiance instability of a scalar field. Recent works extended the existence of this instability to five dimensional rotating charged AdS black holes or static charged AdS black holes in arbitrary dimensions. In this work we analytically prove that, rotating small AdS black holes in arbitrary dimensions also show superradiance …
We study the instability of higher-dimensional rotating anti-de Sitter black holes through fragmentation. Fragmentation occurs when black holes rotate too fast to sustain their horizon, and then the black holes are broken into small pieces. Using this process, we test the stability of AdS black holes and discover the dynamical upper bounds of the angular momentum and the cosmological constant. We show that AdS black holes can exist stably within limited parameter ranges in the general dimensions. The parameter ranges are obtained numerically in terms of angular momentum and cosmological consta…
Nonminimally coupled free scalar fields may be unstable in the spacetime of compact objects. Such instability can be triggered by classical seeds or, more simply, by quantum fluctuations giving rise to the so-called {\em vacuum awakening effect}. Here, we investigate how the parameter space which characterizes the instability is affected when the object gains some rotation. For this purpose, we focus on the stability analysis of nonminimally coupled scalar fields in the spacetime of slowly spinning matter shells.
We study the superradiant instability of slowly rotating Kerr-Newman (sKN) black holes under a charged massive scalar perturbation. These black holes resemble closer the Reissner-Nordström black holes than the Kerr-Newman black holes. We compute the negative absorption cross section of a massive scalar for superradiant scattering in the low frequency limit. From the scalar potential analysis, we find that the superradiant instability is not allowed in the sKN black holes because the condition for a trapping well is not compatible with the superradiance condition. However, the rate of energy ex…
Near-extreme Reissner-Nordstrom-anti-de Sitter black holes are unstable against the condensation of an uncharged scalar field with mass close to the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. It is shown that a similar instability afflicts near-extreme large rotating AdS black holes, and near-extreme hyperbolic Schwarzschild-AdS black holes. The resulting nonlinear hairy black hole solutions are determined numerically. Some stability results for (possibly charged) scalar fields in black hole backgrounds are proved. For most of the extreme black holes we consider, these demonstrate stability if the ``effect…
Rapidly rotating Myers-Perry black holes in d>5 dimensions were conjectured to be unstable by Emparan and Myers. In a previous publication, we found numerically the onset of the axisymmetric ultraspinning instability in the singly-spinning Myers-Perry black hole in d=7,8,9. This threshold signals also a bifurcation to new branches of axisymmetric solutions with pinched horizons that are conjectured to connect to the black ring, black Saturn and other families in the phase diagram of stationary solutions. We firmly establish that this instability is also present in d=6 and in d=10,11. The bound…
In this paper, by applying Newman-Janis algorithm in spherical symmetric metrics, a class of embedded rotating solutions of field equations is presented. These solutions admit non-perfect fluids
We study the stability of static as well as of rotating and charged black holes in (4+1)-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space-time which possess spherical horizon topology. We observe a non-linear instability related to the condensation of a charged, tachyonic scalar field and construct "hairy" black hole solutions of the full system of coupled Einstein, Maxwell and scalar field equations. We observe that the limiting solution for small horizon radius is either a hairy soliton solution or a singular solution that is not a regular extremal solution. Within the context of the gauge/gravity duality t…
The gravitational field of a rigidly rotating perfect fluid cylinder with gamma- law equation of state is found analytically. The solution has two parameters and is physically realistic for gamma in the interval (1.41,2]. Closed timelike curves always appear at large distances.
A rigidly rotating incompressible perfect fluid solution of Einstein's gravitational equations is discussed. The Petrov type is D, and the metric admits a four-parameter isometry group. The Gaussian curvature of the constant-pressure surfaces is positive and they have two ring-shaped cusps.
We discuss the relation between the superradiance phenomenon and the instability of rotating black holes in higher dimensions. In particular, we point out that the superradiant instability of a massless scalar field around a simply rotating Kerr-adS black hole implies the gravitational instability of that black hole for tensor-type perturbations.
In this note we show that the Linet-Tian family of solutions of the vacuum Einstein equations with a cosmological constant are a restricted set of the solutions of the Einstein field equations for a rotating perfect fluid previously found by A. Krasiński.
We reduce Einstein's field equations for the interior of a uniformly rotating, axisymmetric perfect fluid to a system of six second order partial differential equations for the pressure p the energy density $μ$ and four dependent variables.Four of these equations do not depend on p and $μ$ and the other two determine p and $μ$.
A conjecture stated by Raychaudhuri which claims that the only physical perfect fluid non-rotating non-singular cosmological models are comprised in the Ruiz-Senovilla and Fernandez-Jambrina families is shown to be incorrect. An explicit counterexample is provided and the failure of the argument leading to the result is explicitly pointed out.
Clairin's method of obtaining Bäcklund transformations is applied to Einstein's field equations for the interior of a uniformly rotating stationary axisymmetric perfect fluid. It is shown that for arbitrary pressure $p$ and mass density $μ$ the method does not give non-trivial Bäcklund transformations, while if $μ+ 3p =0$ it gives the transformation of Ehlers.
A global solution of the Einstein equations is given, consisting of a perfect fluid interior and a vacuum exterior. The rigidly rotating and incompressible perfect fluid is matched along the hypersurface of vanishing pressure with the stationary part of the Taub-NUT metric. The fluid core generates a negative-mass NUT space-time. The matching procedure leaves one parameter in the global solution.
Locally rotationally symmetric perfect fluid solutions of Einstein's gravitational equations are matched along the hypersurface of vanishing pressure with the NUT metric. These rigidly rotating fluids are interpreted as sources for the vacuum exterior which consists only of a stationary region of the Taub-NUT space-time. The solution of the matching conditions leaves generally three parameters in the global solution. Examples of perfect fluid sources are discussed.
We find the Gregory-Laflamme $s$-mode instability of the non-rotating BTZ black hole in new massive gravity. This instability shows that the BTZ black hole could not exist as a stable static solution to the new massive gravity. For non-rotating BTZ black string in four dimensions, however, it is demonstrated that the BTZ black string can be stable against the metric perturbation.
In this work we have obtained a charged black hole solution in the presence of perfect fluid dark matter (PFDM) and discuss its energy conditions. The metric corresponding to the rotating avatar of this black hole solution is obtained by incorporating the Newman-Janis algorithm. We then compute two types of circular geodesics, namely, the null geodesics and time-like geodesics for this rotating spacetime geometry. For the case of time-like geodesics, we consider both neutral as well as charged massive particles. The effective potentials of the corresponding circular geodesics has also been stu…
It is interesting to note that most black holes are born very slowly rotating. We investigate scalarization of slowly rotating black holes in the Einstein-scalar-Chern-Simons (EsCS) theory. In the slow rotation approximation, the CS term takes a linear form of rotation parameter $a$ which determines the tachyonic instability. The tachyonic instability for slowly rotating black holes represents the onset of spontaneous scalarization. It is shown that the slowly rotating black holes are unstable against a spherically symmetric scalar-mode perturbation for positive coupling $α$, whereas these bla…
We study the instability of small AdS black holes with two independent rotation parameters in minimal five-dimensional gauged supergravity to massless scalar perturbations. We analytically solve the Klein-Gordon equation for low-frequency perturbations in two regions of the spacetime of these black holes: namely, in the region close to the horizon and in the far-region. By matching the solutions in an intermediate region, we calculate the frequency spectrum of quasinormal modes. We show that in the regime of superradiance only the modes of even orbital quantum number undergo negative damping, …
A global model of a slowly rotating perfect fluid ball in general relativity is presented. To second order in the rotation parameter, the junction surface is an ellipsoidal cylinder. The interior is given by a limiting case of the Wahlquist solution, and the vacuum region is not asymptotically flat. The impossibility of joining an asymptotically flat vacuum region has been shown in a preceding work.
We analytically study the linear response of a near-extremal Kerr black hole to external scalar, electromagnetic, and gravitational field perturbations. We show that the energy density, electromagnetic field strength, and tidal force experienced by infalling observers exhibit transient growth near the horizon. The growth lasts arbitrarily long in the extremal limit, reproducing the horizon instability of extremal Kerr. We explain these results in terms of near-horizon geometry and discuss potential astrophysical implications.
We discuss the Starobinskii-Unruh process for the Kerr black hole. We show how this effect is related to the theory of squeezed states. We then consider a simple model for a highly relativistic rotating star and show that the Starobinskii-Unruh effect is absent.
We calculate the scalar-gravitational quasi-normal modes of equal angular momenta Myers-Perry black holes in odd dimensions. We find a new bar-mode (non-axisymmetric) classical instability for $D \ge 7$. These black holes were previously found to be unstable to axisymmetric perturbations for spins very near extremality. The bar-mode instability we find sets in at much slower spins, and is therefore the dominant instability of these black holes. This instability has important consequences for the phase diagram of black holes in higher dimensions.
The Kerr solution for empty space-time is presented in an ellipsoidally symmetric coordinate system and it is used to produce generalised ellipsoidal metrics appropriate for the generation of rotating interior solutions of Einstein's equations. It is shown that these solutions are the familiar static perfect fluid cases commonly derived in curvature coordinates but now endowed with rotation. The resulting solutions are also discussed in the context of T-solutions of Einstein's equations and the vacuum T-solution outside a rotating source is presented. The interior source for these solutions is…
The ergoregion instability is known to affect very compact objects that rotate very rapidly and do not possess a horizon. We present here a detailed analysis on the relevance of the ergoregion instability for the viability of gravastars. Expanding on some recent results, we show that not all rotating gravastars are unstable. Rather, stable models can be constructed also with J/M^2 ~ 1, where J and M are the angular momentum and mass of the gravastar, respectively. The genesis of gravastars is still highly speculative and fundamentally unclear if not dubious. Yet, their existence cannot be rule…
We prove that aligned Petrov type D perfect fluids for which the vorticity vector is not orthogonal to the plane of repeated principal null directions and for which the magnetic part of the Weyl tensor with respect to the fluid velocity has vanishing divergence, are necessarily purely electric or locally rotationally symmetric. The LRS metrics are presented explicitly.
Using the analogy between acoustic perturbations in an ideal fluid and the description of a Klein-Gordon scalar field in a curved spacetime, we study the quasinormal modes of a quantum system: the rotating Bose-Einstein condensate. To compute quasinormal frequencies, we use two different numerical techniques, namely the direct integration and the continued-fraction methods. We study in detail the ergoregion instability of this linearly perturbed system, comparing the results with different setup configurations.
A theorem stated by Raychaudhuri which claims that the only physical non-singular cosmological models are comprised in the Ruiz-Senovilla family is shown to be incorrect. An explicit counterexample is provided and the failure of the argument leading to the theorem is explicitly pointed out.
A brief review of the stability of rotating relativistic stars is followed by a more detailed discussion of recent work on an instability of r-modes, modes of rotating stars that have axial parity in the slow-rotation limit. These modes may dominate the spin-down of neutron stars that are rapidly rotating at birth, and the gravitational waves they emit may be detectable.
The instability of rotating Kerr black holes due to massive scalar perturbations is investigated. It is well known that a bosonic field impinging on a Kerr black hole can be amplified as it scatters off the hole. This superradiant scattering occurs for frequencies in the range $ω<mΩ$, where $Ω$ is the angular frequency of the black hole and $m$ is the azimuthal harmonic index of the mode. If the incident field has a non-zero rest mass, $μ$, then the mass term effectively works as a mirror, reflecting the scattered wave back towards the black hole. The wave may bounce back and forth between the…
Perturbations of rotating relativistic stars can be classified by their behavior under parity. For axial perturbations (r-modes), initial data with negative canonical energy is found with angular dependence $e^{imϕ}$ for all values of $m\geq 2$ and for arbitrarily slow rotation. This implies instability (or marginal stability) of such perturbations for rotating perfect fluids. This low $m$-instability is strikingly different from the instability to polar perturbations, which sets in first for large values of $m$. The timescale for the axial instability appears, for small angular velocity $Ω$, …
In this paper we revisit and extend the prior work of Filho and Bezerra [Phys. Rev D, 64, 084009 (2001)] to rotating dyonic global monopoles in presence of a perfect fluid. We then show that the surface topology at the event horizon, related to the metric computed, is a 2- sphere using the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. By choosing $ω=-1/3, 0, 1/3$ we investigate the effect of dark matter, dust, radiation on the silhouette of black hole. The presence of the global monopole parameter $γ$ and the perfect fluid parameters $\upsilon$, also deforms the shape of black hole's shadow, which has been depicted t…
Rotating small AdS black holes exhibit the superradiant instability to low-frequency scalar perturbations, which is amenable to a complete analytic description in four dimensions. In this paper, we extend this description to all higher dimensions, focusing on slowly rotating charged AdS black holes with a single angular momentum. We divide the spacetime of these black holes into the near-horizon and far regions and find solutions to the scalar wave equation in each of these regions. Next, we perform the matching of these solutions in the overlap between the regions, by employing the idea that …
We provide evidence that ``super-extremal'' black hole space-times (either with charge larger than mass or angular momentum larger than mass), which contain naked singularities, are unstable under linearized perturbations. This is given by an infinite family of exact unstable solutions in the charged non rotating case, and by a set of (unstable) numerical solutions in the rotating case. These results may be relevant to the expectation that these space-times cannot be the endpoint of physical gravitational collapse.
A class of stationary rigidly rotating perfect fluid coupled with non-linear electromagnetic fields was investigated. An exact solution of the Einstein equations with sources for the Carter B(+) branch was found, for the equation of state $3p + ε= constant$. We use a structural function for the Born-Infeld non-linear electrodynamics which is invariant under duality rotations and a metric possessing a four- parameter group of motions. The solution is of Petrov type D and the eigenvectors of the electromagnetic field are aligned to the Debever-Penrose vectors.
Gravitational radiation tends to drive gravity modes in rotating neutron stars unstable. For an inviscid star, the instability sets in when the rotation frequency is about 0.7 times the corresponding mode frequency of the nonrotating star. Neutron stars with spin frequencies $\go 100$ Hz are susceptible to this instability, with growth time of order years. However, it is likely that viscous dissipation suppresses the instability except for a narrow range of temperatures around $10^9$ K. We also show that the viscosity driven instability of g-modes is absent.
Bardeen proposed a gravitationally collapsing magnetic monopole black hole solution which is free of singularity. In this article, we have studied the size and shape of the rotating Bardeen blackhole shadow in presence of perfect fluid dark matter. we have discussed how the parameters such a spin, magnetic monopole charge and influence of dark matter affects the shadow of our blackhole. The apparent shape of the blackhole was studied by using two observables, the radius Rs and the distortion parameter R_s. Further the blackhole emission rate is also studied, we found out that for rotating Bard…
In this review we summarize the current understanding of the gravitational-wave driven instability associated with the so-called r-modes in rotating neutron stars. We discuss the nature of the r-modes, the detailed mechanics of the instability and its potential astrophysical significance. In particular we discuss results regarding the spin-evolution of nascent neutron stars, the detectability of r-mode gravitational waves and mechanisms limiting the spin-rate of accreting neutron stars in binary systems.
In this work, we consider a rotating charged black hole surrounded by perfect fluid dark matter. We consider the system to be immersed in non-magnetised, pressureless plasma. First, we evaluate the null geodesics in order to study the co-rotating and counter rotating photon orbits. Further, we analyse the null geodesics to calculate the celestial coordinates ($α, β$). The celestial coordinates are used to determine the black hole shadow radius ($R_s$). Thereafter, we observe and analyse the effects of black hole spacetime, perfect fluid dark matter and plasma parameters ($a$, $Q$, $χ$, $k$) on…
We derived an exact solution of the spherically symmetric Hayward black hole surrounded by perfect fluid dark matter (PFDM). By applying the Newman-Janis algorithm, we generalized it to the corresponding rotating black hole. Then, we studied the shadows of rotating Hayward black hole in PFDM. The apparent shape of the shadow depends upon the black hole spin $a$, the magnetic charge $Q$ and the PFDM intensity parameter $k$ ($k<0$). The shadow is a perfect circle in the non-rotating case ($a=0$) and a deformed one in the rotating case ($a\neq{0}$). For a fixed value of $a$, the size of the shado…
Hartle's slow rotation formalism is developed in the presence of a cosmological constant. We find the generalisation of the Hartle-Thorne vacuum metric, the Hartle-Thorne-(anti)-de Sitter metric, and find that it is always asymptotically (anti)-de Sitter. Next we consider Wahlquist's rotating perfect fluid interior solution in Hartle's formalism and discuss its matching to the Hartle-Thorne-(anti)-de Sitter metric. It is known that the Wahlquist solution cannot be matched to an asymptotically flat region and therefore does not provide a model of an isolated rotating body in this context. Howev…
In this paper, the greybody factor is studied analytically for a rotating regular Bardeen black hole surrounded by perfect fluid dark matter. Firstly, we examine the behavior of effective potential by using the radial equation of motion developed from the Klein-Gordon equation. We then consider tortoise coordinate to convert the radial equation into Schrödinger form equation. We solve the radial equation of motion and obtain two different asymptotic solutions in terms of hypergeometric function measured at distinct regimes so called near and far-field horizons. These solutions are smoothly mat…
We study analytically the shadow cast by the rotating black hole in the perfect fluid dark matter. The apparent shape of the shadow depends upon the black hole spin $a$ and the perfect fluid dark matter intensity parameter $k$ ($k>0$). In general, the shadow is a perfect circle in the non-rotating case ($a=0$) and a deformed one in the rotating case ($a\neq 0$). The deformation gets more and more significant with the increasing $a$, similar to the Schwarzschild and Kerr black holes. In addition, there exists a reflection point $k_0$. When $k<k_0$, the size of the shadow decreases with the incr…
We study the dynamical instability against bar-mode deformation of differentially rotating stars. We performed numerical simulation and linear perturbation analysis adopting polytropic equations of state with the polytropic index $n=1$. It is found that rotating stars of a high degree of differential rotation are dynamically unstable even for the ratio of the kinetic energy to the gravitational potential energy of $O(0.01)$. Gravitational waves from the final nonaxisymmetric quasistationary states are calculated in the quadrupole formula. For rotating stars of mass $1.4M_{\odot}$ and radius se…
We analysed the shadow cast by charged rotating black hole (BH) in presence of perfect fluid dark matter (PFDM). We studied the null geodesic equations and obtained the shadow of the charged rotating BH to see the effects of PFDM parameter $γ$, charge $Q$ and rotation parameter $a$, and it is noticed that the size as well as the shape of BH shadow is affected due to PFDM parameter, charge and rotation parameter. Thus, it is seen that the presence of dark matter around a BH affects its spacetime. We also investigated the influence of all the parameters (PFDM parameter $γ$, BHs charge $Q$ and ro…
