Possible Formation of a Perfect Fluid in $pp$, $p$-Pb, Xe-Xe and Pb-Pb Collisions at the Large Hadron Collider Energies: A Color String Percolation Approach
Isothermal compressibility ($κ_{\rm T}$) is an important thermodynamic observable which gives information about the deviation of a system from perfect fluid behavior. In this work, for the first time we have estimated the isothermal compressibility of QCD matter formed in high energy hadronic and nuclear collisions using color string percolation model (CSPM), where we investigate the change in $κ_{\rm T}$ as a function of final state charged particle multiplicity and initial percolation temperature across various collision species. The estimated initial percolation temperature for different collision systems at different collision energies helps us to have a better understanding of the system at the initial phase of evolution. The comparison of the CSPM results for isothermal compressibility with that for the well known fluids, indicates that the matter formed in heavy-ion collisions might be the {\it closest perfect fluid} found in nature. This estimation complements the well-known observation of minimum shear viscosity to entropy density ratio for a possible QGP medium created in heavy-ion collision experiments. A threshold of pseudorapidity density of charged particles, $\langle dN_{\rm ch}/dη\rangle \geq 20 $ in the final state event multiplicity is observed, after which one may look for a possible QGP formation at the LHC energies.
In order to have a better understanding of the matter formed in ultra-relativistic collisions, we estimate the jet transport coefficient, $\hat q$, within the Color Sting Percolation Model (CSPM) for various multiplicity classes in proton-proton collisions and centrality classes in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the Large Hadron Collider energies. We study $\hat q$ as a function of final state charged-particle multiplicity and initial percolation temperature. Finally, we compare our obtained results with those calculated from the JET collaboration.
Within the color string percolation model (CSPM), jet transport coefficient, $\hat{q}$, is calculated for various multiplicity classes in proton-proton and centrality classes in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the Large Hadron Collider energies for a better understanding of the matter formed in ultra-relativistic collisions. $\hat{q}$ is studied as a function of final state charged particle multiplicity (pseudorapiditydensity at midrapidity), initial state percolation temperature and energy density. The CSPM results are then compared with different theoretical calculations from the JET Collabora…
To have a better understanding of the matter formed in ultra-relativistic collisions, using the Color String Percolation Model (CSPM), we have estimated initial energy density, mean free path, squared speed of sound, shear viscosity to entropy density ratio ($η/s$), bulk viscosity to entropy density ratio and bulk modulus for $pp$, $p$-Pb, Xe-Xe and Pb-Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). These observables are studied as a function of final state charged particle multiplicity density and initial state percolation temperature. The results from this work are compared with the result…
We take the experimental data for transverse momentum spectra of identified charged hadrons in different centrality classes for nucleus-nucleus (A+A) collisions at various Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) energies measured by the STAR collaboration. We analyse these data in the framework of color string percolation model (CSPM) in order to extract various percolation parameters at different centralities at RHIC energies to study the effect of collision geometry and collision energy. We use these parameters to study the centrality dependent behaviour of initial temperature of the percolat…

The behaviour of the transverse momentum fluctuations with the centrality of the collision shown by the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider data is naturally explained by the clustering of color sources. In this framework, elementary color sources --strings-- overlap forming clusters, so the number of effective sources is modified. These clusters decay into particles with mean transverse momentum that depends on the number of elementary sources that conform each cluster, and the area occupied by the cluster. The transverse momentum fluctuations in this approach correspond to the fluctuations of th…
We discuss a standard model of heavy ion collisions that has emerged both from the experimental results of the RHIC program and associated theoretical developments. We comment briefly on the impact of early results of the LHC program on this picture. We consider how this standard model of heavy ion collisions could be solidified or falsified in future experiments at RHIC, the LHC and a future Electron-Ion Collider.
We use perfect-fluid hydrodynamical model to predict the elliptic flow coefficients in Pb + Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The initial state for the hydrodynamical calculation for central $A + A$ collisions is obtained from the perturbative QCD + saturation (EKRT) model. The centrality dependence of the initial state is modeled by the optical Glauber model. We show that the baseline results obtained from the framework are in good agreement with the data from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), and show predictions for the $p_T$ spectra and elliptic flow of pions in P…
We investigate the effect of QCD resummation to kinematical correlations in the Higgs boson plus high transverse momentum (Pt) jet events produced at hadron colliders. We show that at the complete one-loop order, the Collins-Soper-Sterman resummation formalism can be applied to derive the Sudakov form factor, which is found to be independent of jet-finding algorithm. We compare the singular behavior of resummation calculation to fixed order prediction in the case that Higgs boson and high Pt jet are produced nearly back-to-back in their transverse momenta, and find a perfect agreement. The phe…
The crucial property of particle colliders is their ability to convert (e.g. electrical) energy into the mass of heavy particles. We have become used to the extremely low efficiency of this conversion and the severe limitations on the mass scale of heavy particles which can be reached. In view of this situation, it appears reasonable to ask whether a perfect conversion machine of this type (a perfect `collider') exists even in principle and whether there is a highest mass scale which can be reached by such a machine. It turns out that, with a number of assumptions, such a machine is conceivabl…
The bulk motion of nuclear matter at the ultra-high temperatures created in heavy-ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider is well described in terms of nearly inviscid hydrodynamics, thereby establishing this system of quarks and gluons as the most perfect fluid in nature. A revolution in the field is underway, spearheaded by the discovery of similar collective, fluid-like phenomena in much smaller systems including p+p, p+A, d+Au, and $^3$He$+$Au collisions. We review these exciting new observations and their implications.
We probe the top-quark electric dipole moment (EDM) in top-quark pair production via photon-photon fusion at a photon linear collider. We show how linearly-polarized photon beams can be used to extract information on the top-quark EDM without the use of complicated angular correlations of top-quark decay products. If the luminosity of the laser back-scattered photon-photon collisions is comparable to that of the $e^+e^-$ collisions, then the measurement of the top-quark EDM obtained by counting top-quark-production events in photon fusion can be as accurate as the measurement obtained by study…
The $\bar{B}\to D^{*+} l^-\barν_{l}$ branching fraction ratio $R(D^{*})$ has shown intriguing discrepancies between the Standard Model prediction and measurements performed at BaBar, Belle and LHCb experiments, a possible sign of beyond the Standard Model physics. Theoretical studies prove how observables related to the $\bar{B}\to D^{*+} l^-\barν_{l}$ differential decay distribution can be used to further constrain New Physics contributions, but their experimental measurements is lacking to date. This article presents the attainable precision on the measurement of $\bar{B}\to D^{*+} l^-\barν_…
Using the newly developed hybrid model VISHNU which connects viscous hydrodynamics with a hadron cascade model, we study the differential and integrated elliptic flow v_2 at different centrality bins for 200 A GeV Au+Au collisions and 2.76 A TeV Pb+Pb collisions. We find that the average Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) specific shear viscosity eta/s slightly increases from Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) to Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies. However, a further study assuming different temperature dependencies for (eta/s)_QGP shows that one cannot uniquely constrain the form of (eta/s)_QGP(T…
The LHCb collaboration has found that the production rate of $X(3872)$ in proton-proton collisions decreases as final state particle multiplicity increases. Moreover, the ALICE experiment at CERN has observed that the number of deuterons produced increases with multiplicity, a behavior that is qualitatively different from that of the $X(3872)$. These experimental findings may point to a compact structure for the $X(3872)$ or, at least, that its hadronization could proceed through a charm-anticharm core. We have recently used a diffusion Monte Carlo method to solve the many-body Schrödinger equ…
The results on elliptic flow in sqrt(s)=2.76 TeV Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) reported by the ALICE collaboration are remarkably similar to those for sqrt(s)=200 GeV gold-gold collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). This result is surprising, given the expected longer lifetime of the system at the higher collision energies. We show that it is nevertheless consistent with 3+1 dimensional viscous event-by-event hydrodynamic calculations, and demonstrate that elliptic flow at both RHIC and LHC is built up mostly within the first 5 fm/c of the evolution. We…
We report on a scaling behaviour in the transverse momentum ($p_{T}$) distributions for charged hadrons produced in proton-proton ($pp$) collisions with different center of mass energies ($\sqrt{s}$ = 0.9, 2.76 and 7 TeV) at the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector. This scaling behaviour appears when the $p_{T}$ is replaced by $p_{T}/K$, where $K$ is a parameter and depends on $\sqrt{s}$. A similar scaling behaviour is observed in the $p_{T}$ distributions of charged hadrons produced in proton-antiproton ($p\bar{p}$) collisions with $\sqrt{s}$ = 0.63, 1.8 and 1.96 TeV at the Collider Detector…
Particle experiments are difficult at weak coupling because interactions are rare and a huge number of collision attempts are needed to attain significant precision. One often hears that "one Higgs boson is produced in a billion of collisions at LHC." In this essay, we fantasize about possible advantages afforded in this regard by performing experiments in anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime instead of a usual collider in a nearly-flat spacetime. Being a perfectly resonant cavity, the AdS spacetime enhances all nonlinear interactions, which therefore produce effects of order one no matter how small…
Traditionally, events collected at relativistic heavy-ion colliders are classified according to some centrality estimator (e.g. the number of produced charged particles) related to the initial energy density and volume of the system. In a naive picture the latter are directly related to the impact parameter of the two nuclei, which sets also the initial eccentricity of the system: zero in the case of the most central events and getting larger for more peripheral collisions. A more realistic modelling requires to take into account event-by-event fluctuations, in particular in the nucleon positi…
The hydrodynamic (hydro) model applied to heavy ion data from the relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC) in the form of single-particle spectra and correlations seems to indicate that a dense QCD medium nearly opaque to partons, a strongly-coupled quark-gluon plasma (sQGP), is formed in more-central Au-Au collisions, and that the sQGP may have a very small viscosity ("perfect liquid"). Measurements of radial and elliptic flows, with possible coalescence of "constituent quarks" to form hadrons, seem to support the conclusion. However, other measurements provide contradictory evidence. Unbiased …
