Multi-source fusion positioning is one of the technical frameworks for obtaining sufficient indoor positioning accuracy. In order to evaluate the effect of multi-source fusion positioning, it is necessary to establish a fusion error model. In this paper, we first use the least squares method to fuse the radio fingerprint and the PDR positioning, and then apply the variance propagation laws to calculate the error distribution of indoor multi-source localization methods. Based on the fusion error model, we developed an indoor positioning simulation system. The system can give a better positioning source layout scheme under a given condition, and can evaluate the signal strength distribution and the error distribution.
We propose an indoor navigation algorithm based on pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR) using an inertial measurement unit in a smartphone and map matching. The proposed indoor navigation system is user-friendly and convenient because it requires no additional device except a smartphone and works with a pedestrian in a casual posture who is walking with a smartphone in their hand. Because the performance of the PDR decreases over time, we greatly reduced the position error of the trajectory estimated by PDR using a map matching method with a known indoor map. To verify the proposed indoor navigatio…
Precise indoor localization is one of the key requirements for fifth Generation (5G) and beyond, concerning various wireless communication systems, whose applications span different vertical sectors. Although many highly accurate methods based on signal fingerprints have been lately proposed for localization, their vast majority faces the problem of degrading performance when deployed in indoor systems, where the propagation environment changes rapidly. In order to address this issue, the crowdsourcing approach has been adopted, according to which the fingerprints are frequently updated in the…

Fingerprinting is a popular indoor localization technique since it can utilize existing infrastructures (e.g., access points). However, its site survey process is a labor-intensive and time-consuming task, which limits the application of such systems in practice. In this paper, motivated by the availability of advanced sensing capabilities in smartphones, we propose a fast and reliable fingerprint collection method to reduce the time and labor required for site survey. The proposed method uses a landmark graph-based method to automatically associate the collected fingerprints, which does not r…
WiFi-based indoor localization has received extensive attentions from both academia and industry. However, the overhead of constructing and maintaining the WiFi fingerprint map remains a bottleneck for the wide-deployment of WiFi-based indoor localization systems. Recently, robots are adopted as the professional surveyor to fingerprint the environment autonomously. But the time and energy cost still limit the coverage of the robot surveyor, thus reduce its scalability. To fill this need, we design an AutonomousWiFi Fingerprinting system, called AuF, which autonomously constructs the fingerprin…
Outdoor positioning systems based on the Global Navigation Satellite System have several shortcomings that have deemed their use for indoor positioning impractical. Location fingerprinting, which utilizes machine learning, has emerged as a viable method and solution for indoor positioning due to its simple concept and accurate performance. In the past, shallow learning algorithms were traditionally used in location fingerprinting. Recently, the research community started utilizing deep learning methods for fingerprinting after witnessing the great success and superiority these methods have ove…
Among many techniques for indoor localization, fingerprinting has been shown to provide a higher accuracy compared to the alternative techniques. Fingerprinting techniques require an initial calibration phase during which site surveyors visit virtually every location in the area of interest to manually collect the fingerprint data. However, this process is labour intensive, tedious, and needs to be repeated with any change in the environment. In this work, we propose a technique for enhancing cellular-based indoor localization fingerprinting systems by automatically increasing the spatial dens…
Indoor localization is of particular interest due to its immense practical applications. However, the rich multipath and high penetration loss of indoor wireless signal propagation make this task arduous. Though recently studied fingerprint-based techniques can handle the multipath effects, the sensitivity of the localization performance to channel fluctuation is a drawback. To address the latter challenge, we adopt an artificial multi-layer neural network (MNN) to learn the complex channel impulse responses (CIRs) as fingerprint measurements. However, the performance of the location classific…
The localization technology is important for the development of indoor location-based services (LBS). The radio frequency (RF) fingerprint-based localization is one of the most promising approaches. However, it is challenging to apply this localization to real-world environments since it is time-consuming and labor-intensive to construct a fingerprint database as a prior for localization. Another challenge is that the presence of anomaly readings in the fingerprints reduces the localization accuracy. To address these two challenges, we propose an efficient and robust indoor localization approa…
Many applications require accurate indoor localization. Fingerprint-based localization methods propose a solution to this problem, but rely on a radio map that is effort-intensive to acquire. We automate the radio map acquisition phase using a software-defined radio (SDR) and a wheeled robot. Furthermore, we open-source a radio map acquired with our automated tool for a 3GPP Long-Term Evolution (LTE) wireless link. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first publicly available radio map containing channel state information (CSI). Finally, we describe first localization experiments on this …

Device-free wireless indoor localization is a key enabling technology for the Internet of Things (IoT). Fingerprint-based indoor localization techniques are a commonly used solution. This paper proposes a semi-supervised, generative adversarial network (GAN)-based device-free fingerprinting indoor localization system. The proposed system uses a small amount of labeled data and a large amount of unlabeled data (i.e., semi-supervised), thus considerably reducing the expensive data labeling effort. Experimental results show that, as compared to the state-of-the-art supervised scheme, the proposed…
This paper presents a method for continuous indoor-outdoor environment detection on mobile devices based solely on WiFi fingerprints. Detection of indoor outdoor switching is an important part of identifying a user's context, and it provides important information for upper layer context aware mobile applications such as recommender systems, navigation tools, etc. Moreover, future indoor positioning systems are likely to use Wi-Fi fingerprints, and therefore Wi-Fi receivers will be on most of the time. In contrast to existing research, we believe that these fingerprints should be leveraged, and…

Device-free wireless indoor localization is an essential technology for the Internet of Things (IoT), and fingerprint-based methods are widely used. A common challenge to fingerprint-based methods is data collection and labeling. This paper proposes a few-shot transfer learning system that uses only a small amount of labeled data from the current environment and reuses a large amount of existing labeled data previously collected in other environments, thereby significantly reducing the data collection and labeling cost for localization in each new environment. The core method lies in graph neu…
Fingerprinting-based approaches are particularly suitable for deploying indoor positioning systems for pedestrians with minimal infrastructure costs. The accuracy of the method, however, strongly depends on the quality of collected labeled fingerprints within the calibration phase, which is a tedious process when done manually in a static fashion. We present VI-SLAM2tag, a system for auto-labeling of dynamically collected fingerprints using the visual-inertial simultaneous localization and mapping (VI-SLAM) module of ARCore. ARCore occasionally updates its internal coordinate system. Mapping t…
With the growing integration of location based services (LBS) such as GPS in mobile devices, indoor position systems (IPS) have become an important role for research. There are several IPS methods such as AOA, TOA, TDOA, which use trilateration for indoor location estimation but are generally based on line-of-sight. Other methods rely on classification such as fingerprinting which uses WLAN indoor signals. This paper re-examines the classical WLAN fingerprinting accuracy which uses received signal strength (RSS) measurements by introducing channel estimates for improvements in the classificati…

Due to the indoor none-line-of-sight (NLoS) propagation and multi-access interference (MAI), it is a great challenge to achieve centimeter-level positioning accuracy in indoor scenarios. However, the sixth generation (6G) wireless communications provide a good opportunity for the centimeter-level positioning. In 6G, the millimeter wave (mmWave) and terahertz (THz) communications have ultra-broad bandwidth so that the channel state information (CSI) will have a high resolution. In this paper, a weighted random forest (WRF) based indoor positioning algorithm using CSI based channel fingerprint f…
The location fingerprinting method, which typically utilizes supervised learning, has been widely adopted as a viable solution for the indoor positioning problem. Many indoor positioning datasets are imbalanced. Models trained on imbalanced datasets may exhibit poor performance on the minority class(es). This problem, also known as the "curse of imbalanced data," becomes more evident when class distributions are highly imbalanced. Motivated by the recent advances in deep generative modeling, this paper proposes using Variational Autoencoders and Conditional Variational Autoencoders as oversamp…

Wearable and IoT devices requiring positioning and localisation services grow in number exponentially every year. This rapid growth also produces millions of data entries that need to be pre-processed prior to being used in any indoor positioning system to ensure the data quality and provide a high Quality of Service (QoS) to the end-user. In this paper, we offer a novel and straightforward data cleansing algorithm for WLAN fingerprinting radio maps. This algorithm is based on the correlation among fingerprints using the Received Signal Strength (RSS) values and the Access Points (APs)'s ident…
Machine learning (ML) solutions to indoor localization problems have become popular in recent years due to high positioning accuracy and low cost of implementation. This paper proposes a novel local nonparametric approach for solving localizations from high-dimensional Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) values. Our approach consists of a sequence of classification algorithms that sequentially narrows down the possible space for location solutions into smaller neighborhoods. The idea of this sequential classification method is similar to the decision tree algorithm, but a key difference …
Channel state information (CSI) based fingerprinting for WIFI indoor localization has attracted lots of attention very recently. The frequency diverse and temporally stable CSI better represents the location dependent channel characteristics than the coarsereceived signal strength (RSS). However, the acquisition of CSI requires the cooperation of access points (APs) and involves only dataframes, which imposes restrictions on real-world deployment. In this paper, we present CRISLoc, the first CSI fingerprinting basedlocalization prototype system using ubiquitous smartphones. CRISLoc operates in …

This study describes a UWB and Machine Learning (ML)-based indoor positioning system. We propose a simple mathematical strategy to create data to reduce the job of measurements for fingerprint-based indoor localization systems. A considerable number of measurements can be avoided this way. The paper compares and contrasts the performance of four distinct models. Most test locations' average error may be reduced to less than 150 mm using the best model.
With the unprecedented demand for location-based services in indoor scenarios, wireless indoor localization has become essential for mobile users. While GPS is not available at indoor spaces, WiFi RSS fingerprinting has become popular with its ubiquitous accessibility. However, it is challenging to achieve robust and efficient indoor localization with two major challenges. First, the localization accuracy can be degraded by the random signal fluctuations, which would influence conventional localization algorithms that simply learn handcrafted features from raw fingerprint data. Second, mobile …
Smartphones together with RSSI fingerprinting serve as an efficient approach for delivering a low-cost and high-accuracy indoor localization solution. However, a few critical challenges have prevented the wide-spread proliferation of this technology in the public domain. One such critical challenge is device heterogeneity, i.e., the variation in the RSSI signal characteristics captured across different smartphone devices. In the real-world, the smartphones or IoT devices used to capture RSSI fingerprints typically vary across users of an indoor localization service. Conventional indoor localiz…
Modern indoor localization techniques are essential to overcome the weak GPS coverage in indoor environments. Recently, considerable progress has been made in Channel State Information (CSI) based indoor localization with signal fingerprints. However, CSI signal patterns can be complicated in the large and highly dynamic indoor spaces with complex interiors, thus a solution for solving this issue is urgently needed to expand the applications of CSI to a broader indoor space. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end solution including data collection, pattern clustering, denoising, calibration a…

We examined UWB-based indoor location in conjunction with a fingerprint technique in this work. We built a connection between the measured and real distances for the UWB indoor positioning system. This connection is used to produce a distance database that may be used to generate fringerprints. We created a BP neural network to classify the target node to the relevant fringerpint using the distance database. Our suggested deep learning technology considerably enhances location accuracy when compared to existing trilateration systems.
With the rapid development of indoor location-based services (LBSs), the demand for accurate localization keeps growing as well. To meet this demand, we propose an indoor localization algorithm based on graph convolutional network (GCN). We first model access points (APs) and the relationships between them as a graph, and utilize received signal strength indication (RSSI) to make up fingerprints. Then the graph and the fingerprint will be put into GCN for feature extraction, and get classification by multilayer perceptron (MLP).In the end, experiments are performed under a 2D scenario and 3D s…
This paper proposes a soft range limited K nearest neighbours (SRL-KNN) localization fingerprinting algorithm. The conventional KNN determines the neighbours of a user by calculating and ranking the fingerprint distance measured at the unknown user location and the reference locations in the database. Different from that method, SRL-KNN scales the fingerprint distance by a range factor related to the physical distance between the user's previous position and the reference location in the database to reduce the spatial ambiguity in localization. Although utilizing the prior locations, SRL-KNN d…

This paper presents an indoor localization testbed based on a massive MIMO orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) system, which supports physical-layer channel measurements. Instead of exploiting channel state information (CSI) directly for localization, we focus on positioning from the p…

Localization technology is important for the development of indoor location-based services (LBS). Global Positioning System (GPS) becomes invalid in indoor environments due to the non-line-of-sight issue, so it is urgent to develop a real-time high-accuracy localization approach for smartphones. However, accurate localization is challenging due to issues such as real-time response requirements, limited fingerprint samples and mobile device storage. To address these problems, we propose a novel deep learning architecture: Tensor-Generative Adversarial Network (TGAN). We first introduce a transf…

Because traditional positioning systems such as GPS are limited to outdoor applications, many IPS have been proposed in literature. WLAN-based IPS are the most promising due to its proven accuracy and infrastructure deployment. Several WLAN-based IPS have been proposed in the past, from which the best results have been shown by so-called fingerprint-based systems. This paper proposes an indoor positioning system which extends traditional WLAN fingerprinting by …
Pedestrian dead-reckoning (PDR) is a potential indoor localization technology that obtains location estimation with the inertial measurement unit (IMU). However, one of its most significant drawbacks is the accumulation of its measurement error. A multi-frame fusion method is proposed in the encoding and decoding process of the system, reaching 98.5% decoding accuracy with a 20-bit-long ID at the height of …

Fingerprinting-based positioning significantly improves the indoor localization performance in non-line-of-sight-dominated areas. However, its deployment and maintenance is cost-intensive as it needs ground-truth reference systems for both the initial training and the adaption to environmental changes. In contrast, channel charting (CC) works without explicit reference information and only requires the spatial correlations of channel state information (CSI). While CC has shown promising results in modelling the geometry of the radio environment, a deeper insight into CC for localization using …

In indoor positioning, signal fluctuation is highly location-dependent. However, signal uncertainty is one critical yet commonly overlooked dimension of the radio signal to be fingerprinted. This paper reviews the commonly used Gaussian Processes (GP) for probabilistic positioning and points out the pitfall of using GP to model signal fingerprint uncertainty. This paper also proposes Deep Gaussian Processes (DGP) as a more informative alternative to address the issue. How DGP better measures uncertainty in signal fingerprinting is evaluated via simulated and realistically collected datasets.
While a vast number of location-based services appeared lately, indoor positioning solutions are developed to provide reliable position information in environments where traditionally used satellite-based positioning systems cannot provide access to accurate position estimates. Indoor positioning systems can be based on many technologies; however, radio networks and more precisely Wi-Fi networks seem to attract the attention of a majority of the research teams. The most widely used localization approach used in Wi-Fi-based systems is based on fingerprinting framework. Fingerprinting algorithms…
Localization of wireless transmitters based on channel state information (CSI) fingerprinting finds widespread use in indoor as well as outdoor scenarios. Fingerprinting localization first builds a database containing CSI with measured location information. One then searches for the most similar CSI in this database to approximate the position of wireless transmitters. In this paper, we investigate the efficacy of locality-sensitive hashing (LSH) to reduce the complexity of the nearest neighbor-search (NNS) required by conventional fingerprinting localization systems. More specifically, we pro…
Inferring the location of a mobile device in an indoor setting is an open problem of utmost significance. A leading approach that does not require the deployment of expensive infrastructure is fingerprinting, where a classifier is trained to predict the location of a device based on its captured signal. The main caveat of this approach is that acquiring a sufficiently large and accurate training set may be prohibitively expensive. Here, we propose a weakly supervised method that only requires the location of a small number of devices. The localization is done by matching a low-dimensional spec…
