Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a lung disease that is not fully reversible and one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the world. Early detection and diagnosis of COPD can increase the survival rate and reduce the risk of COPD progression in patients. Currently, the primary examination tool to diagnose COPD is spirometry. However, computed tomography (CT) is used for detecting symptoms and sub-type classification of COPD. Using different imaging modalities is a difficult and tedious task even for physicians and is subjective to inter-and intra-observer variations. Hence, developing meth-ods that can automatically classify COPD versus healthy patients is of great interest. In this paper, we propose a 3D deep learning approach to classify COPD and emphysema using volume-wise annotations only. We also demonstrate the impact of transfer learning on the classification of emphysema using knowledge transfer from a pre-trained COPD classification model.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. While COPD diagnosis is based on lung function tests, early stages and progression of different aspects of the disease can be visible and quantitatively assessed on computed tomography (CT) scans. Many studies have been published that quantify imaging biomarkers related to COPD. In this paper we present a convolutional neural network that directly computes visual emphysema scores and predicts the outcome of lung function tests for 195 CT scans from the COPDGene study. Contrary to previous work, the prop…

Accurate airway extraction from computed tomography (CT) images is a critical step for planning navigation bronchoscopy and quantitative assessment of airway-related chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The existing methods are challenging to sufficiently segment the airway, especially the high-generation airway, with the constraint of the limited label and cannot meet the clinical use in COPD. We propose a novel two-stage 3D contextual transformer-based U-Net for airway segmentation using CT images. The method consists of two stages, performing initial and refined airway segmentation…
Accurate, automatic and complete extraction of pulmonary airway in medical images plays an important role in analyzing thoracic CT volumes such as lung cancer detection, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and bronchoscopic-assisted surgery navigation. However, this task remains challenges, due to the complex tree-like structure of the airways. In this technical report, we use two-stage fully convolutional networks (FCNs) to automatically segment pulmonary airway in thoracic CT scans from multi-sites. Specifically, we firstly adopt a 3D FCN with U-shape network architecture to segmen…

The purpose of this study was to develop a fully-automated segmentation algorithm, robust to various density enhancing lung abnormalities, to facilitate rapid quantitative analysis of computed tomography images. A polymorphic training approach is proposed, in which both specifically labeled left and right lungs of humans with COPD, and nonspecifically labeled lungs of animals with acute lung injury, were incorporated into training a single neural network. The resulting network is intended for predicting left and right lung regions in humans with or without diffuse opacification and consolidati…
In this paper, we propose a convolutional neural network with mapping layers (MCNN) for hyperspectral image (HSI) classification. The proposed mapping layers map the input patch into a low dimensional subspace by multilinear algebra. We use our mapping layers to reduce the spectral and spatial redundancy and maintain most energy of the input. The feature extracted by our mapping layers can also reduce the number of following convolutional layers for feature extraction. Our MCNN architecture avoids the declining accuracy with increasing layers phenomenon of deep learning models for HSI classifi…

This paper compares well-established Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to recently introduced Vision Transformers for the task of Diabetic Foot Ulcer Classification, in the context of the DFUC 2021 Grand-Challenge, in which this work attained the first position. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that modern CNNs are still capable of outperforming Transformers in a low-data regime, likely owing to their ability for better exploiting spatial correlations. In addition, we empirically demonstrate that the recent Sharpness-Aware Minimization (SAM) optimization algorithm considerably improves…

In the proposed SEHybridSN model, a dense block was used to reuse shallow feature and aimed at better exploiting hierarchical spatial spectral feature. Subsequent depth separable convolutional layers were used to discriminate the spatial information. Further refinement of spatial spectral features was realized by the channel attention method, which were performed behind every 3D convolutional layer and every 2D convolutional layer. Experiment results indicate that our proposed model learn more discriminative spatial spectral features using very few training data. SEHybridSN using only 0.05 and…
This paper presented a state-of-the-art framework, Time Gated Convolutional Neural Network (TGCNN) that takes advantage of temporal information and gating mechanisms for the crop classification problem. Besides, several vegetation indices were constructed to expand dimensions of input data to take advantage of spectral information. Both spatial (channel-wise) and temporal (step-wise) correlation are considered in TGCNN. Specifically, our preliminary analysis indicates that step-wise information is of greater importance in this data set. Lastly, the gating mechanism helps capture high-order rel…
Deep Learning-based models such as Convolutional Neural Networks, have led to significant advancements in several areas of computing applications. Seismogram quality assurance is a relevant Geophysics task, since in the early stages of seismic processing, we are required to identify and fix noisy sail lines. In this work, we introduce a real-world seismogram quality classification dataset based on 6,613 examples, manually labeled by human experts as good, bad or ugly, according to their noise intensity. This dataset is used to train a CNN classifier for seismic shot-gathers quality prediction.…
We present results of a deep photonic spiking convolutional neural network, based on two-section VCSELs, targeting image classification. We present a transductive learning approach for morphometric osteophyte grading based on geometric deep learning. We formulate the grading task as semi-supervised node classification problem on a graph embedded in shape space. To account for the high-dimensionality and non-Euclidean structure of shape space we employ a combination of an intrinsic dimension reduction together with a graph convolutional neural network. We demonstrate the performance of our derived classifier in comparisons to an alternative extrinsic approach.
Deep neural networks (DNN) have been studied in various machine learning areas. For example, event-related potential (ERP) signal classification is a highly complex task potentially suitable for DNN as signal-to-noise ratio is low, and underlying spatial and temporal patterns display a large intra- and intersubject variability. Convolutional neural networks (CNN) have been compared with baseline traditional models, i.e. linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and support vector machines (SVM) for single trial classification using a large multi-subject publicly available P300 dataset of school-age c…
