It is known that the universal cover of compact Riemann surface is either the projective line, the complex plane or the unit disk. In this article we construct a very explicit family of complex surfaces that gives rise to uncountably many mutually non-biholomorphic universal covers. A pair of rigid surfaces with $p_g=q=2$ and $K^2=8$ whose universal cover is not the bidisk

We construct two complex-conjugated rigid surfaces with $p_g=q=2$ and $K^2=8$ whose universal cover is not biholomorphic to the bidisk. We show that these are the unique surfaces with these invariants and Albanese map of degree $2$, apart the family of product-quotient surfaces constructed by Penegini. This completes the classification of surfaces with $p_g=q=2, K^2=8$ and Albanese map of degree $2$.

A characterization of surfaces whose universal cover is the bidisk

We show that the universal cover of a compact complex surface $X$ is the bidisk $\HH \times \HH$, or $X$ is biholomorphic to $\PP^1 \times \PP^1$, if and only if $K_X^2 > 0$ and there exists an invertible sheaf $η$ such that $η^2\cong \hol_X$ and $H^0(X, S^2Ω^1_X (-K_X) \otimes η) \neq 0$. The two cases are distinguished by the second plurigenus, $P_2(X)\geq 2$ in the former case, $P_2(X)= 0$ in the latter. We also discuss related questions.

Metric curvature of infinite branched covers

We study branched covering spaces in several contexts, proving that under suitable circumstances the cover satisfies the same upper curvature bounds as the base space. The first context is of a branched cover of an arbitrary metric space that satisfies Alexandrov's curvature condition CAT(k), over an arbitrary complete convex subset. The second context is of a certain sort of branched cover of a Riemannian manifold over a family of mutually orthogonal submanifolds. Beauville surfaces without real structures, I

Inspired by a construction by Arnaud Beauville of a surface of general type with $K^2 = 8, p_g =0$, the second author defined the Beauville surfaces as the surfaces which are rigid, i.e., they have no nontrivial deformation, and admit un unramified covering which is isomorphic to a product of curves of genus at least 2. On the topology of compact Stein surfaces

In this paper we obtain the following results: (1) Any compact Stein surface with boundary embeds naturally into a symplectic Lefschetz fibration over the 2-sphere. (2) There exists a minimal elliptic fibration over the 2-disk, which is not Stein.
