Anomalies in transverse Ward--Takahashi identities are studied, allowing discussion of the feasibility of anomalies arising in general non-symmetry Ward--Takahashi identities. We adopt the popular Fujikawa's method and rigorous dimensional renormalization to verify the existence of transverse anomalies to one-loop order and any loop order, respectively. The arbitrariness of coefficients of transverse anomalies is revealed, and a way out is also proposed after relating transverse anomalies to Schwinger terms and comparing symmetry and non-symmetry anomalies. Papers that claim the non-existence of transverse anomalies are reviewed to find anomalies hidden in their approaches. The role played by transverse anomalies is discussed.
We show that the soft photon, gluon and graviton theorems can be understood as the Ward-Takahashi identities of large gauge transformation, i.e., diffeomorphism that does not fall off at spatial infinity. We found infinitely many new identities which constrain the higher order soft behavior of the gauge bosons and gravitons in scattering amplitudes of gauge and gravity theories. Diagrammatic representations of these soft theorems are presented.
We derive the Ward-Takahashi identity obeyed by the fermion-antifermion-gauge boson vertex in ladder QED in the presence of a constant magnetic field. The general structure in momentum space of the fermion mass operator with external electromagnetic field is discussed. Using it we find the solutions of the ladder WT identity with magnetic field. The consistency of our results with the solutions of the corresponding Schwinger-Dyson equation ensures the gauge invariance of the magnetic field induced chiral symmetry breaking recently found in ladder QED.
The one-loop corrections to the supersymmetric Ward-Takahashi identity (WTi) are investigated in the off-shell regime in the Wilson formulation of the discretized N=1 Super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory. The study of the continuum limit as well as the renormalization procedure for the supercurrent are presented.
The Ward-Takahashi identities in large N field theories are expressed in a simple form using master fields. Operators appearing in these expressions are found to be generators of symmetry transformations acting on the master fields.
We study the possible quantum anomaly for the transverse Ward-Takahashi relations in four dimensional gauge theories based on the method of computing the axial-vector and the vector current operator equations. In addition to the well-known anomalous axial-vector divergence equation (the Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly), we find the anomalous axial-vector curl equation, which leads to the quantum anomaly of the transverse Ward-Takahashi relation for the axial-vector vertex. The computation shows that there is no anomaly for the transverse Ward-Takahashi relation for the vector vertex.
We first derive the transverse Ward-Takahashi identities (WTI) of 3-dimensional quantum electrodynamics (QED$_3$) by means of the canonical quantization method and the path integration method, and then prove for the first time that QED$_3$ is strictly solvable based on the transverse WTI and the longitudinal WTI, that is, the full vector and tensor vertices functions can be expressed in term of the fermion propagators in QED$_3$. Further, we discuss the effect of different $γ$ matrix representations on the full fermion-boson vertex function. It is found that the full vector vertex function doe…
Based on the path integral formalism, we rederive and extend the transverse Ward-Takahashi identities (which were first derived by Yasushi Takahashi) for the vector and the axial vector currents and simultaneously discuss the possible anomaly for them. Subsequently, we propose a new scheme for writing down and solving the Schwinger-Dyson equation in which the the transverse Ward-Takahashi identity together with the usual (longitudinal) Ward-Takahashi identity are applied to specify the fermion-boson vertex function. Especially, in two dimensional Abelian gauge theory, we show that this scheme …
In our previously published papers, it was argued that a massive non-Abelian gauge field theory in which all gauge fields have the same mass can well be set up on the gauge-invariance principle. The quantization of the fields was performed by different methods. In this paper, It is proved that the quantum theory is invariant with respect to a kind of BRST-transformations. From the BRST-invariance of the theory, the Ward-Takahashi identities satisfied by the generating functionals of full Green's functions, connected Green's functions and proper vertex functions are successively derived. As an …
Using spectral function of photon we find the reliable results for the effects of vacuum polarization for the dressed fermion propagator in three-dimensional QED.
A gap in the mathematical logic in derivations in quantum field theory arises as consequence of variation before quantization. To close this gap the present paper introduces a mathematically rigorous variational calculus for operator fields. Using quantization before variation it is demonstrated that the so-called naive results are correct; in particular both Noether's theorem and the Ward-Takahashi identities retain full validity in quantum field theory.
In the functional renormalisation group approach to gauge theory, the Ward-Takahashi identity is modified due to the presence of an infrared cutoff term. It take the most accessible form for the Wilsonian effective action. In the present work we solve these identities, partially, for the Wilson effective action of QED. In particular, we compute the longitudinal part of the photon two point vertex function as a momentum- dependent function in the presence of the cutoff k. The resultant Wilsonian effective action carries form factors that originate from the modified Ward-Takahashi identity. We s…
We study conformal Ward-Takahashi identities for two-point functions in $d(\geq3)$-dimensional finite-temperature conformal field theory. We first show that the conformal Ward-Takahashi identities can be translated into the intertwining relations of conformal algebra $\mathfrak{so}(2,d)$. We then show that, at finite temperature, the intertwining relations can be translated into the recurrence relations for two-point functions in complex momentum space. By solving these recurrence relations, we find the momentum-space two-point functions that satisfy the Kubo-Martin-Schwinger thermal equilibri…
Ward-Takahashi identities of the colored Boulatov model are derived using a generic unitary field transformation. In a specific instance, this generic transformation turns out to be a symmetry of the interaction so that particular classes of reduced Ward-Takahashi identities for that symmetry are consequently identified and interpreted.
We give a functional derivation of the Ward-Takahashi identity for Yang-Mills theory in the framework of the exact renormalization group. The identity realizes non-abelian gauge symmetry nontrivially despite the presence of a momentum cutoff. The cutoff deforms the gauge transformation by introducing composite operators. In our functional method, which is an extension of the method used in our previous work on QED, these composite operators are expressed in terms of the Wilson action that depends on both a UV cutoff and an IR cutoff.
I present an approach to derive the full fermion-boson vertex function in four-dimensional Abelian gauge theory in terms of a set of normal (longitudinal) and transverse Ward-Takahashi relations for the fermion-boson and axial-vector vertices in momentum space in the case of massless fermion. Such a derived fermion-boson vertex function should be satisfied both perturbatively and non-perturbatively. I show that, by an explicit computation, such a derived full fermion-boson vertex function to one-loop order leads to the same result as one obtained in perturbation theory.
We provide a rigorous construction of the Schwinger functions for the massive and massless Thirring models. We use the renormalization group approach, controlling its flow through the Ward-Takahashi identities combined with the Schwinger-Dyson equation. The role of the anomalies is discussed.
An analysis of spontaneously broken chiral symmetry in light-cone field theory is presented. The non-locality inherent to light-cone field theory requires revision of the standard procedure in the derivation of Ward-Takahashi identities. We derive the general structure of chiral Ward-Takahashi identities and construct them explicitly for various model field theories. Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relations and relations between fermion propagators and the structure functions of Nambu-Goldstone bosons are discussed and the necessary modifications of the Ward-Takahashi identities due to the axial anoma…
We derive Ward-Takahashi identities including composite fields in Abelian gauge theories and the matching condition between the elementary field description and the composite field description. With these we develop an approach to dynamical symmetry breaking in Abelian gauge theories including the study of the dynamically generated masses of the gauge boson, the fermions and the composite Higgs field. The Cornwall-Norton, Jackiw-Johnson and Schwinger models are taken as examples of the application. The obtained gauge boson masses are in agreement with the existing results. In this appraoch, we…
The one-loop corrections to the lattice supersymmetric Ward-Takahashi identity (WTi) are investigated in the off-shell regime. In the Wilson formulation of the N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory, supersymmetry (SUSY) is broken by the lattice, by the Wilson term and is softly broken by the presence of the gluino mass. However, the renormalization of the supercurrent can be realized in a scheme that restores the continuum supersymmetric WTi (once the on-shell condition is imposed). The general procedure used to calculate the renormalization constants and mixing coefficients for the local…
This paper aims at investigating the nonperturbative functional renormalization group for tensorial group field theories with nontrivial kinetic action and closure constraint. We consider the quartic melonic just-renormalizable $[U(1)]^6$ model and show that due to this closure constraint the first order Ward-Takahashi identity takes the trivial form as for the models with propagators proportional to identity. We then construct the new version of the effective vertex expansion applicable to this class of models, which in particular allows to close the hierarchical structure of the flow equatio…
It is shown that, by means of canonical operator approach, the Ward-Takahashi identity (WTI) at finite temperature $T$ and finite chemical potential $μ$ for complete vectorial vertex and complete fermion propagator can be simply proven, rigorously for Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) and approximately for Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) where the ghost effect in the fermion sector is neglected. The WTI shown in the real-time thermal matrix form will give definite thermal constraints on the imaginary part of inverse complete Feynman propagator including self-energy for fermion and will play important…
A new formula for the composite Higgs boson mass is given, based on the Ward-Takahashi identity and the Schwinger-Dyson(SD) equation. In this formula the dominant asymptotic solution of the SD equation yields a correct answer, in sharp contrast to the Partially Conserved Dilatation Current(PCDC) approach where the sub- and sub-sub-dominant solutions should be taken into account carefully. In the gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model we find M_H \simeq \sqrt{2}M for the composite Higgs boson mass M_H and the dynamical mass of the fermion M in the case of the constant gauge coupling(with large cut off…
We show both in 1+1 and 3+1 dimensions that, contrary to the recent suggestions, the contribution of the fermion loop to the polarization tensor is manifestly transverse at finite temperature. Some subtleties associated with the Ward identities at finite temperature are also pointed out.
We use supersymmetric Ward identities to relate multi-gluon helicity amplitudes involving a pair of massive quarks to amplitudes with massive scalars. This allows to use the recent results for scalar amplitudes with an arbitrary number of gluons obtained by on-shell recursion relations to obtain scattering amplitudes involving top quarks.
In the framework of the Electroweak Theory we discuss a class of gauge fixing choices suitable for the calculation of electromagnetic processes. We show in particular that, with our choices, beyond the basic Slavnov-Taylor identities guaranteeing the independence of the physical results of the particular gauge fixing, one also has the standard QED Ward identities which play a well known crucial role in the calculation of electromagnetic processes and, in particular, in the analysis of the electromagnetic radiative corrections.
In a simple abelian spinor field theory, the canonical trace identities for certain axial-vector and axial-scalar operators are reexamined in dimensional regularization, some disagreements with previous results are found and an interesting new phenomenon is observed and briefly discussed.
Off-shell Ward identities in non-abelian gauge theory continue to be a subject of active research, since they are, in general, inhomogeneous and their form depends on the chosen gauge-fixing procedure. For the three-gluon and four-gluon vertices, it is known that a relatively simple form of the Ward identity can be achieved using the pinch technique or, equivalently, the background-field method with quantum Feynman gauge. The latter is also the gauge-fixing underlying the string-inspired formalism, and here we use this formalism to derive the corresponding form of the Ward identity for the one…
This work is dedicated to the memory of Raymond Stora (1930-2015). $SU(2)_L$ is the simplest spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) non-Abelian gauge theory: a complex scalar doublet $ϕ=\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}\begin{bmatrix}H+iπ_3-π_2 +iπ_1\end{bmatrix}\equiv\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}\tilde{H}e^{2i\tilde{t}\cdot\tilde{\vecπ}/<H>}\begin{bmatrix}10\end{bmatrix}$ and a vector $\vec{W}^μ$. In Landau gauge, $\vec{W}^μ$ is transverse, $\vec{\tildeπ}$ are massless derivatively coupled Nambu-Goldstone bosons (NGB). A global shift symmetry enforces $m^{2}_{\tildeπ}=0$. We observe that on-shell T-matrix elements of phy…
Ward identities for reggeons are studied in the framework of effective action approach to the QCD in Regge kinematics. It is shown that they require introduction of new contributions not present in the reggeon diagrams initially. Application to vertices RR$\to$RP and RR$\to$RRP are considered and diagrams which have to be added to the QCD ones are found.
Colored tensor models (CTM) is a random geometrical approach to quantum gravity. We scrutinize the structure of the connected correlation functions of general CTM-interactions and organize them by boundaries of Feynman graphs. For rank-$D$ interactions including, but not restricted to, all melonic $φ^4$-vertices---to wit, solely those quartic vertices that can lead to dominant spherical contributions in the large-$N$ expansion---the aforementioned boundary graphs are shown to be precisely all (possibly disconnected) vertex-bipartite regularly edge-$D$-colored graphs. The concept of CTM-compati…
We consider finite superamplitudes of N=1 matter, and use superconformal symmetry to derive powerful first-order differential equations for them. Due to on-shell collinear singularities, the Ward identities have an anomaly, which is obtained from lower-loop information. We show that in the five-particle case, the solution to the equations is uniquely fixed by the expected analytic behavior. We apply the method to a non-planar two-loop five-particle integral.
We study the cancellations among Feynman diagrams that implement the Ward and Slavnov-Taylor identities corresponding to the conserved supersymmetry current in supersymmetric quantum field theories. In particular, we show that the Faddeev-Popov ghosts of gauge- and supersymmetries never decouple from the physical fields, even for abelian gauge groups. The supersymmetric Slavnov-Taylor identities provide efficient consistency checks for automatized calculations and can verify the supersymmetry of Feynman rules and the numerical stability of phenomenological predictions simultaneously.
We discuss the use of BRST symmetry and the resulting Ward identities for orbifold gauge theories as consistency checks in an arbitrary number of dimensions. We verify that both the usual orbifold symmetry breaking and the recently proposed Higgsless symmetry breaking are consistent with the nilpotency of the BRST transformation. Imposing the Ward identities resulting from the BRST symmetry on the 4-point functions of theory, we obtain relations on the coupling constants that are shown to be equivalent to the conditions for tree level unitarity. We present the complete set of these sum rules a…
We argue that the topological charge of nonabelian gauge theory is unphysical. To show this statement, we use the Adler-Bardeen theorem and the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin symmetry which are warranted by the perturbative finiteness of the chiral anomaly, thus being free of Gribov ambiguity. In addition to the original argument using the unphysical gauge field component collinear to the spatial derivative of the gauge function, we show the unobservability of the topological charge using the Ward-Takahashi identity. We then present the consequences of this finding and show the consistency with man…
We study the question of the Ward identity for "large" gauge invariance in 0+1 dimensional theories. We derive the relevant Ward identities for a single flavor fermion and a single flavor complex scalar field interacting with an Abelian gauge field. These identities are nonlinear. The Ward identity for any other complicated theory can be derived from these basic sets of identities. However, the structure of the Ward identity changes since these are nonlinear identities. In particular, we work out the "large" gauge Ward identity for a supersymmetric theory involving a single flavor of fermion a…
We analyze a formulation of QED based on the Wilson renormalization group. Although the ``effective Lagrangian'' used at any given scale does not have simple gauge symmetry, we show that the resulting renormalized Green's functions correctly satisfies Ward identities to all orders in perturbation theory. The loop expansion is obtained by solving iteratively the Polchinski's renormalization group equation. We also give a new simple proof of perturbative renormalizability. The subtractions in the Feynman graphs and the corresponding counterterms are generated in the process of fixing the physica…
We investigate non-Abelian gauge theories within a Wilsonian Renormalisation Group approach. The cut-off term inherent in this approach leads to a modified Ward identity (mWI). It is shown that this mWI is compatible with the flow and that the full effective action satisfies the usual Ward identity (WI). The universal 1-loop beta-function is derived within this approach and the extension to the 2-loop level is briefly outlined.
In this talk the gauge symmetry for Wilsonian flows in pure Yang-Mills theories is discussed. The background field formalism is used for the construction of a gauge invariant effective action. The symmetries of the effective action under gauge transformations for both the gauge field and the auxiliary background field are separately evaluated. Modified Ward-Takahashi and background field identities are used in my study. Finally it is shown how the symmetry properties of the full theory are restored in the limit where the cut-off is removed.
We derive spectral representations for the different components of the 4-point function at finite temperature in the real time formalism in terms of five real spectral densities. We explicitly calculate all these functions in QED in the hard thermal loop approximation. The Ward identities obeyed by the 1-loop 3- and 4-point functions in real time and their spectral functions are derived. We compare our results with those derived previously in the imaginary-time formalism for retarded functions in hot QCD, and we discuss the generalization of our results to non-equilibrium situations.
We analyse the recent controversy on a possible Chern-Simons like term generated through radiative corrections in QED with a CPT violating term : we prove that, if the theory is correctly defined through Ward identities and normalisation conditions, no Chern-Simons term appears, without any ambiguity. This is related to the fact that such a term is a kind of minor modification of the gauge fixing term, and then no renormalised. The past year literature on that subject is discussed, and we insist on the fact that any absence of an {\sl a priori} divergence should be explained by some symmetry o…
We present a general study of 3-point functions of conformal field theory (CFT) in momentum space, following a reconstruction method for tensor correlators, based on the solution of the conformal Ward identities (CWIs), introduced in recent works. We investigate and detail the structure of the CWIs and their non-perturbative solutions, and compare them to perturbation theory, taking QED and QCD as examples. Exact solutions of CFT's in the flat background limit in momentum space are matched by the perturbative realizations in free field theories, showing that the origin the conformal anomaly is…
We study the consistency of the cubic couplings of a (partially-)massless spinning field to two scalars in $\left(d+1\right)$-dimensional de Sitter space. Gauge invariance of observables with external (partially)-massless spinning fields translates into Ward-Takahashi identities on the boundary. Using the Mellin-Barnes representation for boundary correlators in momentum space, we give a systematic study of Ward-Takahashi identities for tree-level 3- and 4-point processes involving a single external (partially-)massless field of arbitrary integer spin-$J$. 3-point Ward-Takahashi identities cons…
It is known that soft photon and graviton theorems can be regarded as the Ward-Takahashi identities of asymptotic symmetries. In this paper, we consider soft theorem for pions, i.e., Nambu-Goldstone bosons associated with a spontaneously broken axial symmetry. The soft pion theorem is written as the Ward-Takahashi identities of the $S$-matrix under asymptotic transformations. We investigate the asymptotic dynamics, and find that the conservation of charges generating the asymptotic transformations can be interpreted as a pion memory effect.
We rederive the $w_\infty$ Ward identities, starting from the existence of trivial linearized gauge invariances, and using the method of canceled propagators in the operator formalism. Recursion relations for certain classes of correlation functions are derived, and these correlation function are calculated exactly. We clarify the relation of these results with another derivation of the Ward identities, which relies directly on charge conservation. We also emphasize the importance of the kinematics of canceled propagators in ensuring that the Ward identities are non-trivial. Finally, we sketch…
Lavelle-McMullan symmetry of QED is examined at classical and quantum levels. It is shown that Lavelle-McMullan symmetry does not give any new non-trivial information in QED by examining the Ward-Takahashi identities. Being inspired by the examination of Ward-Takahashi identity, we construct the generalized non-local and non-covariant symmetries of QED.
We study chiral properties of eigenvalue spectrum for staggered quarks. We present a new method to identify would-be zero modes and nonzero modes using their symmetry and chiral properties. Here, we review the traditional method with HYP improved staggered quarks, and extend it to a completely new method which uses the chiral Ward identities and leakage patterns to achieve the goal.
In this paper, we study the renormalizability of the Standard Model in the Landau gauge. On the basis of the Ward-Takahashi identities, we derive exact expressions for the physical masses of the W and Z as well as the renormalized coupling constants in the theory. We show that it is impossible to make all these renormalized quantities finite. Thus the quantum theory of the Standard Model with the divergent amplitudes obeying the Ward-Takahashi identities is not renormalizable.
We utilise a non-local gauge transform which renders the entire action of SUSY QED invariant and respects the SUSY algebra modulo the gauge-fixing condition, to derive two- and three-point ghost-free SUSY Ward identities in SUSY QED. We use the cluster decomposition principle to find the Green's function Ward identities and then takes linear combinations of the latter to derive identities for the proper functions.
Lattice studies of QCD at temperatures above the chiral restoration and QCD with truncated low modes of the Dirac operator indicate approximate and explicit $SU(4)$ degeneracies in hadron spectra, respectively. At the same time, the QCD classical action and the path integral measure are not invariant under $SU(4)$. Here we investigate $SU(4)$ transformations in the continuum limit by deriving corresponding Ward identities. We show that, if there is a gap in low-lying modes of the Dirac operator the obtained $SU(4)$ Ward identities are simplified and look like they would be if $SU(4)$ symmetry …
In this note we show how Ward identities may be derived for a quantum field theory dual of a string theory using the AdS/CFT correspondence. In particular associated with any gauge symmetry of the bulk supergravity theory there is a corresponding constraint equation. Writing this constraint in Hamilton-Jacobi form gives a generating functional for Ward identities in the dual QFT. We illustrate the method by considering various examples.
~It is shown that the quantum massive non-Abelian field theory established in the former papers is renormalizable. This conclusion is achieved with the aid of the Ward-Takahashi identities satisfied by the generating functionals which were derived in the preceding paper based on the BRST-symmetry of the theory. By the use of the Ward-Takahashi identity, it is proved that the divergences occurring in the perturbative calculations for the massive gauge field theory can be eliminated by introducing a finite number of counterterms in the effective action. As a result of the proof, it is found that…
We verify the QED Ward identity for the two- and three -point functions at non-equilibrium in the HTL limit. We use the Keldysh formalism of real time finite temperature field theory. We obtain an identity of the same form as the Ward identity for a set of one loop self-energy and one loop three-point vertex diagrams which are constructed from HTL effective propagators and vertices.
Higher order conservation laws, associated with conserved antisymmetric tensors $j^{μ_1 ... μ_k}$ fulfilling $\partial_{μ_1} j^{μ_1 ... μ_k} \approx 0$, are shown to define rigid symmetries of the master equation. They thus lead to independent Ward identities which are explicitly derived.
