Inspired by the magnificent features of two-dimensional (2D) materials which aroused much of the interest in recent materials science research, we study PT-symmetric 2D Weyl semimetal (WSM) to reveal the broadband and wide-angle invisible configurations in a PT-symmetric optical slab system. Desired unidirectional reflectionlessness and invisibility phenomena is obtained by the optimal control of system parameters. We unravel the mystery of broadband and wide-angle invisibility in regular slab materials with finite refractive indices by means of the plenary expressions. We show that materials whose refractive indices relatively small (usually around $η=1$) give rise to quite a lot broadband and wide-angle (almost all incidence angles) invisible configurations. This is not observed with any 2D material other than 2D WSMs. Our findings suggest a concrete expedience to experimental realizations in this direction.
We outline a method for constructing effectively two-dimensional isotropic optical media that are perfectly and omnidirectionally invisible for both TE and TM waves provided that their wavenumber does not exceed a preassigned value $α$. This relies on the observation that a complex scattering potential $v(x,y)$ displays perfect invisibility for wavenumbers $k\leqα$ provided that its Fourier transform with respect to $y$, which we denote by $\tilde v(x,\mathfrak{K}_y)$, vanishes for $\mathfrak{K}_y\leq 2α$. We use this result to construct the permittivity profile for a realistic optical slab th…
Achieving exact unidirectional invisibility in a finite frequency band has been an outstanding problem for many years. We offer a simple solution to this problem in two dimensions that is based on our solution to another more basic open problem of scattering theory, namely finding scattering potentials $v(x,y)$ in two dimensions whose scattering problem is exactly solvable for energies not exceeding a critical value $E_c$. This extends the notion of quasi-exact solvability to scattering theory and yields a simple condition under which the first Born approximation gives the exact expression for…
This note is a comment on a recent article [Tsakmakidis, et al., Nat Commun 10 (2019)] that presents a thought-provoking proposal to overcome the bandwidth restrictions of invisibility cloaks based on using media that support superluminal (faster than light in free space) group and phase velocities. As illustrated in Fig. 1 of the original article, a wave packet propagating through such a fast-light cloak is alleged to be able to reach the side behind the cloaked object simultaneously with a corresponding wave packet propagating through the shorter, direct route in free space without the objec…
We numerically demonstrate that a planar slab made of magnetic Weyl semimetal (a class of topological materials) can emit high-purity circularly polarized (CP) thermal radiation over a broad mid- and long-wave infrared wavelength range for a significant portion of its emission solid angle. This effect fundamentally arises from the strong infrared gyrotropy or nonreciprocity of these materials which primarily depends on the momentum separation between Weyl nodes in the band structure. We clarify the dependence of this effect on the underlying physical parameters and highlight that the spectral …
Metamaterials and metasurfaces operating in the visible and near-infrared (NIR) offer a promising route towards next-generation photodetectors and devices for solar energy harvesting. While numerous metamaterials and metasurfaces using metals and semiconductors have been demonstrated, semimetals-based metasurfaces in the vis-NIR range are notably missing. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a broadband metasurface superabsorber based on large area, semimetallic, van der Waals PtSe2 thin films in agreement with electromagnetic simulations. Our results show that PtSe2 is an ultrathin and scalabl…
In view of the fact that most invisibility devices focus on linear polarization cloaking and that the characteristics of mid infrared cloaking are rarely studied, we propose a cross circularly polarized invisibility carpet cloaking device in the mid infrared band. Based on the Pancharatnam Berry phase principle, the unit cells with the cross circular polarization gradient phase were carefully designed and constructed into a metasurface. In order to achieve tunable cross circular polarization carpet cloaks, a phase change material is introduced into the design of the unit structure. When the ph…
Exotic topological and transport properties of Weyl semimetals generated a lot of excitement in the condensed matter community. Here we show that Weyl semimetals in a strong magnetic field are highly unusual optical materials. The propagation of electromagnetic waves is affected by an interplay between plasmonic response of chiral Weyl fermions and extreme anisotropy induced by a magnetic field. The resulting magneto-polaritons possess a number of peculiar properties, such as hyperbolic dispersion, photonic stop bands, coupling-induced transparency, and broadband polarization conversion. These…
Prototypical three-dimensional (3D) topological Dirac semimetals (DSMs), such as Cd$_3$As$_2$ and Na$_3$Bi, contain electrons that obey a linear momentum-energy dispersion with different Fermi velocities along the three orthogonal momentum dimensions. Despite being extensively studied in recent years, the inherent \emph{Fermi velocity anisotropy} has often been neglected in the theoretical and numerical studies of 3D DSMs. Although this omission does not qualitatively alter the physics of light-driven massless quasiparticles in 3D DSMs, it does \emph{quantitatively} change the optical coeffici…

We suggest graphene and a two-dimensional (2D) Weyl semimetal (WSM) as 2D materials for the realization of a broadband coherent perfect absorber (CPA) respecting overall PT-symmetry. We also demonstrate the conditions for mutually equal amplitudes and phases of the left and right incoming waves to realize a CPA. 2D materials in our system play the role to enhance the absorption rate of a CPA once the appropriate parameters are inserted in the system. We show that a 2D WSM is more effective than graphene in obtaining the optimal conditions. We display the behavior of each parameter governing th…
