In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), the opportunistic routing has better performances on packet delivery probability than the deterministic routing. For reducing the transmission delay and duplicate transmission in opportunistic routing, the candidate forwarding set optimization technology is proposed. This technology is crucial to opportunistic routing. The prior arts have limitations on improving the routing performances. Therefore, in this paper, we propose the concept of the network-based approach to address the disadvantages of prior arts. In the network-based approach, the nodes in the candidate forwarding set are divided into different fully connected relay networks. For the forwarding nodes in CFS, more than one relay network can be constructed and only one relay network can be chosen as the final relay network. So, first, we propose the fully connected relay network judgment algorithm to judge whether the chosen network is fully connected or not. Next, the properties of these networks are investigated. In this algorithm, the relay network selection takes the packet delivery probability between the sender and the relay networks, the transmission delay, and the forwarding priorities of nodes in relay networks into account to choose the most effective relay network. The nodes in this relay network will be chosen as final forwarding nodes. By these, the transmission delay and duplicate transmission are reduced while the efficiency of opportunistic routing is kept. Based on these innovations, the proposed algorithm can improve network performances greater than that of ExOR and SOAR.
Data transfer in opportunistic Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs) must rely on unscheduled sporadic meetings between nodes. The main challenge in these networks is to develop a mechanism based on which nodes can learn to make nearly optimal forwarding decision rules despite having no a-priori knowledge of the network topology. The forwarding mechanism should ideally result in a high delivery probability, low average latency and efficient usage of the network resources. In this paper, we propose both centralized and decentralized single-copy message forwarding algorithms that, under relatively stro…
Opportunistic networks could become the solution to provide communication support in both cities where the cellular network could be overloaded, and in scenarios where a fixed infrastructure is not available, like in remote and developing regions. A critical issue that still requires a satisfactory solution is the design of an efficient data delivery solution. Social characteristics are recently being considered as a promising alternative. Most opportunistic network applications rely on the different mobile devices carried by users, and whose behavior affects the use of the device itself. This…
The current Internet design is not capable to support communications in environments characterized by very long delays and frequent network partitions. To allow devices to communicate in such environments, delay-tolerant networking solutions have been proposed by exploiting opportunistic message forwarding, with limited expectations of end-to-end connectivity and node resources. Such solutions envision non-traditional communication scenarios, such as disaster areas and development regions. Several forwarding algorithms have been investigated, aiming to offer the best trade-off between cost (nu…
In opportunistic networks, the use of social metrics (e.g., degree, closeness and betweenness centrality) of human mobility network, has recently been shown to be an effective solution to improve the performance of opportunistic forwarding algorithms. Most of the current social-based forwarding schemes exploit some globally defined node centrality, resulting in a bias towards the most popular nodes. However, these nodes may not be appropriate relay candidates for some target nodes, because they may have low importance relative to these subsets of target nodes. In this paper, to improve the opp…
The opportunistic routing has great advantages on improving packet delivery probability between the source node and candidate forwarding set. For improving and reducing energy consumption and network interference, in this paper, we propose an efficient and reliable transmission power control based opportunistic routing (ERTO) for wireless ad hoc networks. In ERTO, the network interference and fading, which are critical to routing performances but not taken into account in previous works, are considered during the prediction of. The, the expected energy consumption, and the relationship between…
Several social-aware forwarding strategies have been recently introduced in opportunistic networks, and proved effective in considerably in- creasing routing performance through extensive simulation studies based on real-world data. However, this performance improvement comes at the expense of storing a considerable amount of state information (e.g, history of past encounters) at the nodes. Hence, whether the benefits on routing performance comes directly from the social-aware forwarding mechanism, or indirectly by the fact state information is exploited is not clear. Thus, the question of whe…
Cognitive radio (CR) is a promising technology to improve spectrum utilization. However, spectrum availability is uncertain which mainly depends on primary user's (PU's) behaviors. This makes it more difficult for most existing CR routing protocols to achieve high throughput in multi-channel cognitive radio networks (CRNs). Inter-session network coding and opportunistic routing can leverage the broadcast nature of the wireless channel to improve the performance for CRNs. In this paper we present a coding aware opportunistic routing protocol for multi-channel CRNs, cognitive radio opportunistic…
We propose to raise network domain to the first-class citizen in packet routing and forwarding. By making domain explicit in packet header, it can be held responsible for committed services and quality of service. Since the service is easier to be monitored, verified, and compensated, a new business model catering for emerging cross-domain, high-value, and performance-sensitive applications can be fostered. The domain-level routing and forwarding essentially create a L3.5 in the network protocol stack. We extend IPv6 with new routing headers to support two types of forwarding approaches. One i…
LoRaWAN is one of the leading Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) architectures. It was originally designed for systems consisting of static sensor or Internet of Things (IoT) devices and static gateways. It was recently updated to introduce new features such as nano-second timestamps which open up applications to enable LoRaWAN to be adopted for mobile device tracking and localisation. In such mobile scenarios, devices could temporarily lose communication with the gateways because of interference from obstacles or deep fading, causing throughput reduction and delays in data transmission. To o…
With the current host-based Internet architecture, networking faces limitations in dynamic scenarios, due mostly to host mobility. The ICN paradigm mitigates such problems by releasing the need to have an end-to-end transport session established during the life time of the data transfer. Moreover, the ICN concept solves the mismatch between the Internet architecture and the way users would like to use it: currently a user needs to know the topological location of the hosts involved in the communication when he/she just wants to get the data, independently of its location. Most of the research …
IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Networks (RPL) is an essential routing protocol to enable communications for IoT networks with low power devices. RPL uses an objective function and routing constraints to find an optimized routing path for each node in the network. However, recent research has shown that topological attacks, such as selective forwarding attacks, pose great challenges to the secure routing of IoT networks. Many conventional secure routing solutions, on the other hand, are computationally heavy to be directly applied in resource-constrained IoT networks. There is an…
Opportunistic networks are delay-tolerant networks which enable network connectivity while there is limited access to network infrastructure, such as natural disaster happenings. Since opportunistic networks use store-carry-forward mechanism to deliver data, routing algorithms have significant impact on successful data delivery. Due to the Operating System restrictions, creating an opportunistic network using ad-hoc model is not feasible on smartphones and to the best of our knowledge, none of common zero-knowledge routing algorithms have been proposed for a non-ad hoc communication model. In …
Opportunistic routing is being investigated to enable the proliferation of low-cost wireless applications. A recent trend is looking at social structures, inferred from the social nature of human mobility, to bring messages close to a destination. To have a better picture of social structures, social-based opportunistic routing solutions should consider the dynamism of users' behavior resulting from their daily routines. We address this challenge by presenting dLife, a routing algorithm able to capture the dynamics of the network represented by time-evolving social ties between pair of nodes. …
Opportunistic routing is a multi-hop routing scheme which allows for selection of the best immediately available relay. In blind opportunistic routing protocols, where transmitters blindly broadcast without knowledge of the surrounding nodes, two fundamental design parameters are the node transmission probability and the transmission spectral efficiency. In this paper these parameters are selected to maximize end-to-end performance, characterized by the product of transmitter density, hop distance and rate. Due to the intractability of the problem as stated, an approximation function is examin…
These Network Coding improves the network operation beyond the traditional routing or store-and-forward, by mixing of data stream within a network. Network coding techniques explicitly minimizes the total no of transmission in wireless network. The Coding-aware routing maximizes the coding opportunity by finding the coding possible path for every packet in the network. Here we propose CORMEN: a new coding-aware routing mechanism based on opportunistic routing. In CORMEN, every node independently can take the decision whether to code packets or not and forwarding of packets is based on the codi…
BitTorrent is a popular communication protocol for peer-to-peer file sharing. It uses a data-centric approach, wherein the data is decentralized and peers request each other for pieces of the file(s). Aspects of this process is similar to the Named Data Networking (NDN) architecture, but is realized completely at the application level on top of TCP/IP networking. nTorrent is a peer-to-peer file sharing application that is based on NDN. The goal of this project is to port the application onto ndnSIM and illustrate the effects of routing and forwarding.
Unlike classical routing algorithms, quantum routing algorithms make use of entangled states - a type of resources that have a limited lifetime and need to be regenerated after consumption. In a nutshell, quantum routing algorithms have to use these resources efficiently, while optimizing some objectives such as the total waiting time. Current routing algorithms tend to keep a routing request waiting until all of the resources on its path are available. In this paper, we introduce a new way of managing entanglement resources in an opportunistic fashion: a request can move forward along its pat…
The opportunistic routing has advantages on improving the packet delivery ratio between source node and candidate set (PDRsc). However, considering the frequent topology variation in wireless sensor networks, how to improve and control the PDR has not been investigated in detail. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an efficient and reliable topology control based opportunistic routing algorithm (ERTO) which takes PDRsc into account. In ERTO, the interference and transmission power loss are taken into account during the calculation of PDRsc. The PDRsc, the expected energy consumption, and the …
Nowadays, routing proposals must deal with a panoply of heterogeneous devices, intermittent connectivity, and the users' constant need for communication, even in rather challenging networking scenarios. Thus, we propose a Social-aware Content-based Opportunistic Routing Protocol, SCORP, that considers the users' social interaction and their interests to improve data delivery in urban, dense scenarios. Through simulations, using synthetic mobility and human traces scenarios, we compare the performance of our solution against other two social-aware solutions, dLife and Bubble Rap, and the social…
This paper introduces a methodology for the development of routing algorithms that takes into consideration opportunistic networking. The proposal focus on the rationale behind the methodology, and highlights its most important stages and components. It also discusses the importance of two core elements in the process of protocol designing: the scenario selection, based on essential characteristics, and the choice of standard evaluation metrics. As of now, there has been no common methodology for developing new routing algorithms, and this has led to proposals difficult to compare, to evaluate…
Wireless network applications, such as, searching, routing, self stabilization and query processing can be modeled as random walks on graphs. Stateless Opportunistic routing technique is a robust distributed routing technique based on random walk approach, where nodes transfer the packets to one of their direct neighbors uniformly, until the packets reach their destinations. Simplicity in execution, fault tolerance, low overhead and robustness to topology changes made it more suitable to wireless sensor networks scenarios. But the main disadvantage of stateless opportunistic routing is estimat…
Since users move around based on social relationships and interests, the resulting movement patterns can represent how nodes are socially connected (i.e., nodes with strong social ties, nodes that meet occasionally by sharing the same working environment). This means that social interactions reflect personal relationships (e.g., family, friends, co-workers, passers-by) that may be translated into statistical contact opportunities within and between social groups over time. Such contact opportunities may be exploited to ensure good data dissemination and retrieval, even in the presence of inter…
We consider the problem of routing packets across a multi-hop network consisting of multiple sources of traffic and wireless links while ensuring bounded expected delay. Each packet transmission can be overheard by a random subset of receiver nodes among which the next relay is selected opportunistically. The main challenge in the design of minimum-delay routing policies is balancing the trade-off between routing the packets along the shortest paths to the destination and distributing traffic according to the maximum backpressure. Combining important aspects of shortest path and backpressure r…
Major wireless operators are nowadays facing network capacity issues in striving to meet the growing demands of mobile users. At the same time, 3G-enabled devices increasingly benefit from ad hoc radio connectivity (e.g., Wi-Fi). In this context of hybrid connectivity, we propose Push-and-track, a content dissemina- tion framework that harnesses ad hoc communication opportunities to minimize the load on the wireless infrastructure while guaranteeing tight delivery delays. It achieves this through a control loop that collects user-sent acknowledgements to determine if new copies need to be rein…

In Manets Dynamics and Robustness are the key features of the nodes and are governed by several routing protocols such as AODV, DSR and so on. However in the network the growing resource demand leads to resource scarcity. The Node Mobility often leads to the link breakages and high routing overhead decreasing the stability and reliability of the network connectivity. In this context, the paper proposes a novel opportunistic AODV routing scheme which implements a cognitive agent based intelligent technique to set up a stable connectivity over the Manet. The Scheme computes the routing metric (r…

Network coding and opportunistic routing are two recognized innovative ideas to improve the performance of wireless networks by utilizing the broadcast nature of the wireless medium. In the last decade, there has been considerable research on how to synergize inter-flow network coding and opportunistic routing in a single joint protocol outperforming each in any scenario. This paper explains the motivation behind the integration of these two techniques, and highlights certain scenarios in which the joint approach may even degrade the performance, emphasizing the fact that their synergistic eff…
Connectivity patterns in intermittently-connected mobile networks (ICMN) can be modeled as edge-Markovian dynamic graphs. We propose a new model for epidemic propagation on such graphs and calculate a closed-form expression that links the best achievable delivery ratio to common ICMN parameters such as message size, maximum tolerated delay, and link lifetime. These theoretical results are compared to those obtained by replaying a real-life contact trace.
Due to the increased capabilities of mobile devices and through wireless opportunistic contacts, users can experience new ways to share and retrieve content anywhere and anytime, even in the presence of link intermittency. Due to the significant number of available routing solutions, it is difficult to understand which one has the best performance, since all of them follow a different evaluation method. This paper proposes an assessment model, based on a new taxonomy, which comprises an evaluation guideline with performance metrics and experimental setup to aid designers in evaluating solution…
Because sensor nodes operate on power limited batteries, sensor functionalities have to be designed carefully. AGEM uses sensors node positions to make packet forwarding decisions. These decisions are made online, at each forwarding node, in such a way that there is no need for global network topology knowledge and maintenance. AGEM routing protocol performs load-balancing to minimize energy consumption among nodes using twofold policy: (1) smart greedy forwarding, based on adaptive compass and (2) walking back forwarding to avoid holes. In the Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), due to the high mobility of vehicles, the network parameters change frequently and the information which the sender maintains may outdate when it wants to transmit data packet to the receiver, so for improving the routing effective, we propose the probability prediction based reliable (PRO) opportunistic routing for VANETs. The PRO routing algorithm can predict the variation of Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR) and packet queue length (PQL) in the receiver. The prediction results are used to determine the utility of each relaying vehicle …
Routing packets opportunistically is an essential part of multihop ad hoc wireless sensor networks. The existing routing techniques are not adaptive opportunistic. In this paper we have proposed an adaptive opportunistic routing scheme that routes packets opportunistically in order to ensure that packet loss is avoided. Learning and routing are combined in the framework that explores the optimal routing possibilities. In this paper we implemented this Reinforced learning framework using a customer simulator. The experimental results revealed that the scheme is able to exploit the opportunistic…
Forwarding decisions in classical IP-based networks are predetermined by routing. This is necessary to avoid loops, inhibiting opportunities to implement an adaptive and intelligent forwarding plane. Consequently, content distribution efficiency is reduced due to a lack of inherent multi-path transmission. In Named Data Networking (NDN) instead, routing shall hold a supporting role to forwarding, providing sufficient potential to enhance content dissemination at the forwarding plane. In this paper we design, implement, and evaluate a novel probability-based forwarding strategy, called Stochast…
For improving the efficiency and the reliability of the opportunistic routing algorithm, in this paper, we propose the cross-layer and reliable opportunistic routing algorithm (CBRT) for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, which introduces the improved efficiency fuzzy logic and humoral regulation inspired topology control into the opportunistic routing algorithm. In CBRT, the inputs of the fuzzy logic system are the relative variance (rv) of the metrics rather than the values of the metrics, which reduces the number of fuzzy rules dramatically. Moreover, the number of fuzzy rules does not increase when t…

We first present the nonlinear programming optimization model for this joint problem, taking into account the feature of CRNs-channel uncertainty. Then considering the queue state of a node, we propose a new scheme to select proper forwarding candidates for opportunistic routing. Furthermore, a new algorithm for calculating the forwarding probability of any packet at a node is pro…
Routing is a challenge to Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs) for supporting multimedia applications due to nodes' energy constraints and computational capabilities, and the ways sensor nodes obtain forwarding information. In this paper, we propose an online multipath routing protocol that uses nodes' positions to make forwarding decisions at each hop. Real-time decisions are made without any need to have the entire network topology knowledge. The protocol achieves load-balancing and minimises nodes' energy consumption by utilizing: (a) smart greedy forwarding scheme for selecting next…
Opportunistic Routing (OR) scheme increases the transmission reliability despite the lossy wireless radio links by exploiting the broadcast nature of the wireless medium. However, OR schemes in low power Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) leads to energy drain in constrained sensor nodes due to constant overhearing, periodic beaconing for Neighbourhood Management (NM) and increase in packet header length to append priority wise sorted Forwarding Candidates Set (FCS) prior to data transmission. The focus of this work is to propose a hybrid opportunistic energy efficient routing design for large scal…

A survey of current routing solutions is presented, where routing protocols for opportunistic networks are classified based on the network graph employed. The need to capture performance tradeoffs from a multi-objective perspective is highlighted.
Content dissemination networks are pervasive in todays Internet. Examples of content dissemination networks include peer-to-peer networks (P2P), content distribution networks (CDN) and information centric networks (ICN). In this paper, we propose a new system design for information centric networks which leverages opportunistic searching, routing and caching. Our system design is based on an hierarchical tiered structure. In mobile crowd sensing networks data forwarding through opportunistic contacts between participants. Data is replicated to encountered participants. For optimizing data delivery ratio and reducing redundant data a lot of data forwarding schemes, which selectively replicate data to encountered participants through node's data forwarding metric are proposed. However most of them neglect a kind of redundant data whose Time-To-Live is expired. For reducing this kind of redundant data we proposed a new method to evaluate node's data forwarding metric, which is used to measure the node's probabilit…
Since the packet is transmitted to a set of relaying nodes in opportunistic routing strategy, so the transmission delay and the duplication transmission are serious. For reducing the transmission delay and the duplicate transmission, in this paper, we propose the delay based duplication transmission avoid (DDA) coordination scheme for opportunistic routing. In this coordination scheme, the candidate relaying nodes are divided into different fully connected relaying networks, so the duplicate transmission is avoided. Moreover, we propose the relaying network recognition algorithm which can be u…
We introduce CCN-RAMP (Routing to Anchors Matching Prefixes), a new approach to content-centric networking. CCN-RAMP offers all the advantages of the Named Data Networking (NDN) and Content-Centric Networking (CCNx) but eliminates the need to either use Pending Interest Tables (PIT) or lookup large Forwarding Information Bases (FIB) listing name prefixes in order to forward Interests. CCN-RAMP uses small forwarding tables listing anonymous sources of Interests and the locations of name prefixes. Such tables are immune to Interest-flooding attacks and are smaller than the FIBs used to list IP a…
Emergency communication is extremely important to aid rescue and search operation in the aftermath of any disaster. In such scenario, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) networks may be used to complement the damaged cellular networks over large areas. However, in such UAV networks, routing is a challenge, owing to high UAV mobility, intermittent link quality between UAVs, dynamic three dimensional (3D) UAV topology and resource constraints. Though several UAV routing approaches have been proposed, none of them so far have addressed inter UAV coverage, collision and routing in an integrated manner. …
We present CCN-DART, a more efficient forwarding approach for content-centric networking (CCN) than named data networking (NDN) that substitutes Pending Interest Tables (PIT) with Data Answer Routing Tables (DART) and uses a novel approach to eliminate forwarding loops. The forwarding state required at each router using CCN-DART consists of segments of the routes between consumers and content providers that traverse a content router, rather than the Interests that the router forwards towards content providers. Accordingly, the size of a DART is proportional to the number of routes used by Inte…
In this paper, we study the downward routing for network control/actuation in large-scale and heterogeneous wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and Internet of Things (IoT). We propose the Opportunistic Source Routing (OSR), a scalable and reliable downward routing protocol for WSNs/IoT. OSR introduces opportunistic routing into traditional source routing based on the parent set of a node's upward routing in data collection, significantly addressing the drastic link dynamics in low-power and lossy WSNs. We devise a novel adaptive Bloom filter mechanism to effectively and efficiently encode a downw…
In multi-radio wireless mesh networks, one node is eligible to transmit packets over multiple channels to different destination nodes simultaneously. This feature of multi-radio wireless mesh network makes high throughput for the network and increase the chance for multi path routing. This is because the multiple channel availability for transmission decreases the probability of the most elegant problem called as interference problem which is either of interflow and intraflow type. For avoiding the problem like interference and maintaining the constant network performance or increasing the per…
