The magnetic moment of a quantum dot can be screened by its coupling to a superconducting reservoir, depending on the hierarchy of the superconducting gap and the relevant Kondo scale. This screening-unscreening transition can be driven by electrostatic gating, tunnel coupling, and, as we demonstrate here, magnetic field. We perform high-resolution spectroscopy of subgap excitations near the screening-unscreening transition of asymmetric superconductor - quantum dot - superconductor (S-QD-S) junctions formed by the electromigration technique. Our measurements reveal a re-entrant phase boundary determined by the competition between Zeeman energy and gap reduction with magnetic field. We further track the evolution of the phase transition with increasing temperature, which is also evidenced by thermal replicas of subgap states.
A quantum dot weakly coupled to two normal metal leads exhibits resonant transmission when one of the dot energy levels lies within the applied bias window. But when the quantum dot is sidecoupled to the transport channel, transmission in the channel is suppressed when a dot energy lies in the bias window. A steady current can also be driven in a transport channel by connecting it to superconducting reservoirs and applying a Josephson phase difference instead of a voltage bias. An interesting question is to investigate the transport across quantum dot connected to two superconductors maintaine…
We consider a three-terminal system consisting of a quantum dot strongly coupled to two superconducting reservoirs in the infinite gap limit and weakly coupled to a normal metal. Using a real-time diagrammatic approach, we calculate the dynamics of the proximity-induced pair amplitude on the quantum dot. We find that after a quench the pair amplitude shows pronounced oscillations with a frequency determined by the coupling to the superconductors. In addition, it decays exponentially on a time scale set by the coupling to the normal metal. Strong oscillations of the pair amplitude occur also wh…
We study a single-level quantum dot strongly coupled to a superconducting lead and tunnel-coupled to a normal electrode which can exchange energy with a single-mode resonator. We show that a such system can sustain lasing characterized by a sub-Poissonian Fock-state distribution of the resonator. The lasing regime is clearly identifiable in the subgap transport regime: in the resonant case, the current is pinned to the maximum value achievable in this hybrid nanostructure.
In this article, we study the quantum transport through a single-level quantum-dot in Kondo regime, coupled to current leads and embedded between two one-dimensional topological superconductors, each hosting Majorana zero modes at their ends. The Kondo effect in the quantum dot is modeled by mean-field finite-$U$ auxiliary bosons approximation and solved by using the non-equilibrium Green's function approach. First, we calculate the density of states of the quantum dot, and then both the current and the differential conductance through the quantum dot in order to characterize the interplay bet…
Semiconductor quantum dots have proven to be a useful platform for quantum simulation in the solid state. However, implementing a superconducting coupling between quantum dots mediated by a Cooper pair has so far suffered from limited tunability and strong suppression. This has limited applications such as Cooper pair splitting and quantum dot simulation of topological Kitaev chains. In this work, we propose how to mediate tunable effective couplings via Andreev bound states in a semiconductor-superconductor nanowire connecting two quantum dots. We show that in this way it is possible to indiv…
Interference effects induced by Andreev bound states in a hybrid nanostructure composed by a quantum dot coupled to ferromagnetic and superconductor leads
We study the I-V characteristic of mesoscopic systems or Quantum dot attached of a pair of superconducting leads. Interaction effects in the quantum dot are considered through the charging energy of the quantum dot; the treatment of such effects are considered within a Poisson-non-equilibrium function scheme.
A quantum dot coupled to a superconducting contact provides a tunable artificial analogue of a magnetic atom in a superconductor, a paradigmatic quantum impurity problem. We realize such a system with an InAs semiconductor nanowire contacted by an Al-based superconducting electrode. We use an additional normal-type contact as weakly coupled tunnel probe to perform tunneling spectroscopy measurements of the elementary sub-gap excitations, known as Andreev bound states or Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states. We demonstrate that the energy of these states, $ζ$, scales with the ratio between the Kondo tempera…
Chaotic dot-superconductor analog of the Hanbury Brown Twiss effect
Hybrid superconductor-semiconducting nanowire devices provide an ideal platform to investigating novel intragap bound states, such as the Andreev bound states (ABSs), Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states, and the Majorana bound states. The competition between Kondo correlations and superconductivity in Josephson quantum dot (QD) devices results in two different ground states and the occurrence of a 0-$π$ quantum phase transition. Here we report on transport measurements on hybrid superconductor-InSb nanowire QD devices with different device geometries. We demonstrate a realization of continuous gate-…
We formulate a general theory to study the time-dependent charge and energy transport of an adiabatically driven quantum dot in contact to normal and superconducting reservoirs at T=0. This setup is a generalization of a quantum RC circuit, with capacitive components due to Andreev processes and induced pairing fluctuations, in addition to the convencional normal charge fluctuations. The dynamics for the dissipation of energy is ruled by a Joule law of four channels in parallel with the universal Büttiker resistance R_0=e^2/2h per channel. Two transport channels are associated to the two spin …
As an analogy to the Weyl point in k-space, we search for energy levels which close at a single point as a function of a three dimensional parameter space. Such points are topologically protected in the sense that any perturbation which acts on the two level subsystem can be corrected by tuning the control parameters. We find that parameter controlled Weyl points are ubiquitous in semiconductor-superconductor quantum dots and that they are deeply related to Majorana zero modes. In this paper, we present several semiconductor-superconductor quantum dot devices which host parameter controlled We…
We consider a quantum dot weakly tunnel coupled to superconducting reservoirs. A finite superconducting pair amplitude can be induced on the dot via the proximity effect. We investigate the dynamics of the induced pair amplitude after a quench and under periodic driving of the system by means of a real-time diagrammatic approach. We find that the quench dynamics is dominated by an exponential decay towards equilibrium In contrast, the periodically driven system can sustain coherent oscillations of both the amplitude and the phase of the induced pair amplitude in analogy to Higgs and Nambu-Gold…
We theoretically study the superconducting proximity effect in a quantum dot coupled to two superconducting leads when the intradot interaction between electrons is made attractive. Because of the superconducting proximity effect, the electronic states for the embedded quantum dot are either spin-polarized states with an odd occupation number or BCS-like states with an even occupation number. We show that in the presence of an external magnetic field, the system can exhibit quantum phase transitions of fermion parity associated with the occupation number. In this work, we adopt a self-consiste…
In spite of extended efforts, detecting thermoelectric effects in superconductors have proven to be a challenging task, due to the inherent superconducting particle-hole symmetry. Here we present a theoretical study of an experimentally attainable Superconductor -- Quantum Dot -- Superconductor (SC-QD-SC) Josephson Junction with highly tunable thermoelectric properties and a thermal response that is far larger than previous suggestions. The QD energy level between the SCs breaks particle-hole symmetry in a gradual manner, allowing, in the presence of a temperature gradient, for gate controlled…
We analyze heat and charge transport through a single-level quantum dot coupled to two BCS superconductors at different temperatures to first order in the tunnel coupling. In order to describe the system theoretically, we extend a real-time diagrammatic technique that allows us to capture the interplay between superconducting correlations, strong Coulomb interactions, and nonequilibrium physics. We find that a thermoelectric effect can arise due to the superconducting proximity effect on the dot. In the nonlinear regime, the thermoelectric current can also flow at the particle-hole symmetric p…
We investigate the Josephson radiation emitted by a junction made of a quantum dot coupled to two conventional superconductors. Close to resonance, the particle-hole symmetric Andreev states that form in the junction are detached from the continuum above the superconducting gap in the leads, while a gap between them opens near the Fermi level. Under voltage bias, we formulate a stochastic model that accounts for non-adiabatic processes, which change the occupations of the Andreev states. This model allows calculating the current noise spectrum and determining the Fano factor. Analyzing the fin…
Hybrid devices combining quantum dots with superconductors are important building blocks of conventional and topological quantum-information experiments. A requirement for the success of such experiments is to understand the various tunneling-induced non-local interaction mechanisms, namely, crossed Andreev reflection, elastic cotunneling, and direct interdot tunneling, that are present in the device. Here, we provide a theoretical study of a simple device which consists of two quantum dots and a superconductor tunnel-coupled to the dots, often called a Cooper-pair splitter. We study the three…

We design and investigate an experimental system capable of entering an electron transport blockade regime in which a spin-triplet localized in the path of current is forbidden from entering a spin-singlet superconductor. To stabilize the triplet a double quantum dot is created electrostatically near a superconducting lead in an InAs nanowire. The dots are filled stochastically with electrons of either spin. The superconducting lead is a molecular beam epitaxy grown Al shell. The shell is etched away over a wire segment to make room for the double dot and the normal metal gold lead. The quantu…
The Josephson supercurrent through the hybrid Majorana--quantum dot--Majorana junction is investigated. We particularly analyze the effect of spin-selective coupling between the Majorana and quantum dot states, which emerges only in the topological phase and will influence the current through bent junctions and/or in the presence of magnetic fields in the quantum dot. We find that the characteristic behaviors of the supercurrent through this system are quite counterintuitive, remarkably differing from the resonant tunneling, e.g., through the similar (normal phase) superconductor--quantum dot-…
