An investigation is presented of how a comprehensive choice of four most important measures of concordance (namely Spearman's rho, Kendall's tau, Spearman's footrule, and Gini's gamma) relate to the fifth one, i.e., the Blomqvist's beta. In order to work out these results we present a novel method of estimating the values of the four measures of concordance on a family of copulas with fixed value of beta. These results are primarily aimed at the community of practitioners trying to find the right copula to be employed on their data. However, the proposed method as such may be of independent interest from theoretical point of view.
Copulas are becoming an essential tool in analyzing data thus encouraging interest in related questions. In the early stage of exploratory data analysis, say, it is helpful to know local copula bounds with a fixed value of a given measure of association. These bounds have been computed for Spearman's rho, Kendall's tau, and Blomqvist's beta. The importance of another two measures of association, Spearman's footrule and Gini's gamma, has been reconfirmed recently. It is the main purpose of this paper to fill in the gap and present the mentioned local bounds for these two measures as well. It tu…
We compare measures of concordance that arise as Pearson's linear correlation coefficient between two random variables transformed so that they follow the so-called concordance-inducing distributions. The class of such transformed rank correlations includes Spearman's rho, Blomqvist's beta and van der Waerden's coefficient. When only the standard axioms of measures of concordance are required, it is not always clear which transformed rank correlation is most suitable to use. To address this question, we compare measures of concordance in terms of their best and worst asymptotic variances of so…
Measures of concordance have been widely used in insurance and risk management to summarize non-linear dependence among risks modeled by random variables, which Pearson's correlation coefficient cannot capture. However, popular measures of concordance, such as Spearman's rho and Blomqvist's beta, appear as classical correlations of transformed random variables. We characterize a whole class of such concordance measures arising from correlations of transformed random variables, which includes Spearman's rho, Blomqvist's beta and van der Waerden's coefficient as special cases. Compatibility and …
In the present paper we propose and study estimators for a wide class of bivariate measures of concordance for copulas. These measures of concordance are generated by a copula and generalize Spearman's rho and Gini's gamma. In the case of Spearman's rho and Gini's gamma the estimators turn out to be the usual sample versions of these measures of concordance.
In the present paper, we study extreme negative dependence focussing on the concordance order for copulas. With the absence of a least element for dimensions $d\ge$ 3, the set of all minimal elements in the collection of all copulas turns out to be a natural and quite important extreme negative dependence concept. We investigate several sufficient conditions and we provide a necessary condition for a copula to be minimal: The sufficient conditions are related to the extreme negative dependence concept of d-countermonotonicity and the necessary condition is related to the collection of all copu…
Methods are developed for checking and completing systems of bivariate and multivariate Kendall's tau concordance measures in applications where only partial information about dependencies between variables is available. The concept of a concordance signature of a multivariate continuous distribution is introduced; this is the vector of concordance probabilities for margins of all orders. It is shown that every attainable concordance signature is equal to the concordance signature of a unique mixture of the extremal copulas, that is the copulas with extremal correlation matrices consisting exc…
We explore the consequences of a set of axioms which extend Scarsini's axioms for bivariate measures of concordance to the multivariate case and exhibit the following results: (1) A method of extending measures of concordance from the bivariate case to arbitrarily high dimensions. (2) A formula expressing the measure of concordance of the random vectors $(\pm X_1,...,\pm X_n)$ in terms of the measures of concordance of the "marginal" random vectors $(X_{i_1},...,X_{i_k})$. (3) A method of expressing the measure of concordance of an odd-dimensional copula in terms of the measures of concordance…
Working with shuffles we establish a close link between Kendall's tau, the so-called length measure, and the surface area of bivariate copulas and derive some consequences. While it is well-known that Spearman's rho of a bivariate copula A is a rescaled version of the volume of the area under the graph of A, in this contribution we show that the other famous concordance measure, Kendall's tau, allows for a simple geometric interpretation as well - it is inextricably linked to the surface area of A.
Quantifying tail dependence is an important issue in insurance and risk management. The prevalent tail dependence coefficient (TDC), however, is known to underestimate the degree of tail dependence and it does not capture non-exchangeable tail dependence since it evaluates the limiting tail probability only along the main diagonal. To overcome these issues, two novel tail dependence measures called the maximal tail concordance measure (MTCM) and the average tail concordance measure (ATCM) are proposed. Both measures are constructed based on tail copulas and possess clear probabilistic interpre…
