Autonomous systems such as self-driving cars and general-purpose robots are safety-critical systems that operate in highly uncertain and dynamic environments. We propose an interactive multi-agent framework where the system-under-design is modeled as an ego agent and its environment is modeled by a number of adversarial (ado) agents. For example, a self-driving car is an ego agent whose behavior is influenced by ado agents such as pedestrians, bicyclists, traffic lights, road geometry etc. Given a logical specification of the correct behavior of the ego agent, and a set of constraints that encode reasonable adversarial behavior, our framework reduces the adversarial testing problem to the problem of synthesizing controllers for (constrained) ado agents that cause the ego agent to violate its specifications. Specifically, we explore the use of tabular and deep reinforcement learning approaches for synthesizing adversarial agents. We show that ado agents trained in this fashion are better than traditional falsification or testing techniques because they can generalize to ego agents and environments that differ from the original ego agent. We demonstrate the efficacy of our technique on two real-world case studies from the domain of self-driving cars.

The incredible feats of athleticism demonstrated by humans are made possible in part by a vast repertoire of general-purpose motor skills, acquired through years of practice and experience. These skills not only enable humans to perform complex tasks, but also provide powerful priors for guiding their behaviors when learning new tasks. This is in stark contrast to what is common practice in physics-based character animation, where control policies are most typically trained from scratch for each task. In this work, we present a large-scale data-driven framework for learning versatile and reusa…

The design and implementation of low-profile antennas has been analyzed in past decades from different perspectives while the purpose is to have a small size in the device, and an adequate electromagnetic behavior. This work pursues a methodology to identify small antennas and consequently presents some similarities. Meanwhile, curved surfaces are considered for a certain variety of antennas with reduced size. The so-called deep reinforcement learning technique is used as an assistance against morphological variations that are specifically taken into account in this work. The objective is to i…

Though impressive results have been achieved in visual captioning, the task of generating abstract stories from photo streams is still a little-tapped problem. Different from captions, stories have more expressive language styles and contain many imaginary concepts that do not appear in the images. Thus it poses challenges to behavioral cloning algorithms. Furthermore, due to the limitations of automatic metrics on evaluating story quality, reinforcement learning methods with hand-crafted rewards also face difficulties in gaining an overall performance boost. Therefore, we propose an Adversari…
This paper aims to contribute in bench-marking the automatic polyp segmentation problem using generative adversarial networks framework. Perceiving the problem as an image-to-image translation task, conditional generative adversarial networks are utilized to generate masks conditioned by the images as inputs. Both generator and discriminator are convolution neural networks based. The model achieved 0.4382 on Jaccard index and 0.611 as F2 score.
As automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems are now being widely deployed in the wild, the increasing threat of adversarial attacks raises serious questions about the security and reliability of using such systems. On the other hand, multi-task learning (MTL) has shown success in training models that can resist adversarial attacks in the computer vision domain. In this work, we investigate the impact of performing such multi-task learning on the adversarial robustness of ASR models in the speech domain. We conduct extensive MTL experimentation by combining semantically diverse tasks such as …

This paper presents a novel approach to automatic fetal brain biometry motivated by needs in low- and medium- income countries. Specifically, we leverage high-end (HE) ultrasound images to build a biometry solution for low-cost (LC) point-of-care ultrasound images. We propose a novel unsupervised domain adaptation approach to train deep models to be invariant to significant image distribution shift between the image types. Our proposed method, which employs a Dual Adversarial Calibration (DAC) framework, consists of adversarial pathways which enforce model invariance to; i) adversarial perturb…
Recently adversarial attacks on automatic speaker verification (ASV) systems attracted widespread attention as they pose severe threats to ASV systems. However, methods to defend against such attacks are limited. Existing approaches mainly focus on retraining ASV systems with adversarial data augmentation. Also, countermeasure robustness against different attack settings are insufficiently investigated. Orthogonal to prior approaches, this work proposes to defend ASV systems against adversarial attacks with a separate detection network, rather than augmenting adversarial data into ASV training…

Adversarial examples are inputs to machine learning models designed by an adversary to cause an incorrect output. So far, adversarial examples have been studied most extensively in the image domain. In this domain, adversarial examples can be constructed by imperceptibly modifying images to cause misclassification, and are practical in the physical world. In contrast, current targeted adversarial examples applied to speech recognition systems have neither of these properties: humans can easily identify the adversarial perturbations, and they are not effective when played over-the-air. This pap…

Fooling deep neural networks with adversarial input have exposed a significant vulnerability in the current state-of-the-art systems in multiple domains. Both black-box and white-box approaches have been used to either replicate the model itself or to craft examples which cause the model to fail. In this work, we propose a framework which uses multi-objective evolutionary optimization to perform both targeted and un-targeted black-box attacks on Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems. We apply this framework on two ASR systems: Deepspeech and Kaldi-ASR, which increases the Word Error Rates…
A generative adversarial network (GAN) based fully automatic electrocardiogram (ECG) arrhythmia classification system with high performance is presented in this paper. The generator (G) in our GAN is designed to generate various coupling matrix inputs conditioned on different arrhythmia classes for data augmentation. Our designed discriminator (D) is trained on both real and generated ECG coupling matrix inputs, and is extracted as an arrhythmia classifier upon completion of training for our GAN. After fine-tuning the D by including patient-specific normal beats estimated using an unsupervised…
Automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems can be fooled via targeted adversarial examples, which induce the ASR to produce arbitrary transcriptions in response to altered audio signals. However, state-of-the-art adversarial examples typically have to be fed into the ASR system directly, and are not successful when played in a room. The few published over-the-air adversarial examples fall into one of three categories: they are either handcrafted examples, they are so conspicuous that human listeners can easily recognize the target transcription once they are alerted to its content, or they req…

An adversarial attack is an exploitative process in which minute alterations are made to natural inputs, causing the inputs to be misclassified by neural models. In the field of speech recognition, this has become an issue of increasing significance. Although adversarial attacks were originally introduced in computer vision, they have since infiltrated the realm of speech recognition. In 2017, a genetic attack was shown to be quite potent against the Speech Commands Model. Limited-vocabulary speech classifiers, such as the Speech Commands Model, are used in a variety of applications, particula…
A central task of a Disc Jockey (DJ) is to create a mixset of mu-sic with seamless transitions between adjacent tracks. In this paper, we explore a data-driven approach that uses a generative adversarial network to create the song transition by learning from real-world DJ mixes. In particular, the generator of the model uses two differentiable digital signal processing components, an equalizer (EQ) and a fader, to mix two tracks selected by a data generation pipeline. The generator has to set the parameters of the EQs and fader in such away that the resulting mix resembles real mixes created b…

Adversarial examples are inputs with imperceptible perturbations that easily misleading deep neural networks(DNNs). Recently, adversarial patch, with noise confined to a small and localized patch, has emerged for its easy feasibility in real-world scenarios. However, existing strategies failed to generate adversarial patches with strong generalization ability. In other words, the adversarial patches were input-specific and failed to attack images from all classes, especially unseen ones during training. To address the problem, this paper proposes a bias-based framework to generate class-agnost…

The number of papers submitted to academic conferences is steadily rising in many scientific disciplines. To handle this growth, systems for automatic paper-reviewer assignments are increasingly used during the reviewing process. These systems use statistical topic models to characterize the content of submissions and automate the assignment to reviewers. In this paper, we show that this automation can be manipulated using adversarial learning. We propose an attack that adapts a given paper so that it misleads the assignment and selects its own reviewers. Our attack is based on a novel optimiz…

Cardiac disease is the leading cause of death in the US. Accurate heart disease detection is of critical importance for timely medical treatment to save patients' lives. Routine use of electrocardiogram (ECG) is the most common method for physicians to assess the electrical activities of the heart and detect possible abnormal cardiac conditions. Fully utilizing the ECG data for reliable heart disease detection depends on developing effective analytical models. In this paper, we propose a two-level hierarchical deep learning framework with Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) for automatic diag…
We propose GANCoder, an automatic programming approach based on Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN), which can generate the same functional and logical programming language codes conditioned on the given natural language utterances. The adversarial training between generator and discriminator helps generator learn distribution of dataset and improve code generation quality. Our experimental results show that GANCoder can achieve comparable accuracy with the state-of-the-art methods and is more stable when programming languages.
We construct targeted audio adversarial examples on automatic speech recognition. Given any audio waveform, we can produce another that is over 99.9% similar, but transcribes as any phrase we choose (recognizing up to 50 characters per second of audio). We apply our white-box iterative optimization-based attack to Mozilla's implementation DeepSpeech end-to-end, and show it has a 100% success rate. The feasibility of this attack introduce a new domain to study adversarial examples.

Neural models enjoy widespread use across a variety of tasks and have grown to become crucial components of many industrial systems. Despite their effectiveness and extensive popularity, they are not without their exploitable flaws. Initially applied to computer vision systems, the generation of adversarial examples is a process in which seemingly imperceptible perturbations are made to an image, with the purpose of inducing a deep learning based classifier to misclassify the image. Due to recent trends in speech processing, this has become a noticeable issue in speech recognition models. In l…
In this paper, we aim to solve the automatic playlist continuation (APC) problem by modeling complex interactions among users, playlists, and songs using only their interaction data. Prior methods mainly rely on dot product to account for similarities, which is not ideal as dot product is not metric learning, so it does not convey the important inequality property. Based on this observation, we propose three novel deep learning approaches that utilize Mahalanobis distance. Our first approach uses user-playlist-song interactions, and combines Mahalanobis distance scores between (i) a target use…

Despite recent advances in deep-learning based semantic segmentation, automatic building detection from remotely sensed imagery is still a challenging problem owing to large variability in the appearance of buildings across the globe. The errors occur mostly around the boundaries of the building footprints, in shadow areas, and when detecting buildings whose exterior surfaces have reflectivity properties that are very similar to those of the surrounding regions. To overcome these problems, we propose a generative adversarial network based segmentation framework with uncertainty attention unit …

Obtaining annotations for large training sets is expensive, especially in settings where domain knowledge is required, such as behavior analysis. Weak supervision has been studied to reduce annotation costs by using weak labels from task-specific labeling functions (LFs) to augment ground truth labels. However, domain experts still need to hand-craft different LFs for different tasks, limiting scalability. To reduce expert effort, we present AutoSWAP: a framework for automatically synthesizing data-efficient task-level LFs. The key to our approach is to efficiently represent expert knowledge i…
