We study Berry curvature driven and Zeeman magnetic field dependent electric current responses of two-dimensional electron system with spin-orbit coupling. New non-dissipative component of the electric current occurring in the applied in-plane magnetic field is described. This component is transverse to the electric field, odd in the magnetic field, and depends only on one particular direction of the magnetic field defined by the spin-orbit coupling. We show that the effect can be observed in a number of systems with $C_{3v}$ symmetry.
We study the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida (RKKY) interaction mediated by helical edge states in quantum spin hall system. The helical edge states induce an in-plane noncollinear exchange coupling between two local spins, in contrast to the isotropic coupling induced in normal metal. The angle between the two local spins in the ground state depends on the Fermi level. This property may be used to control the angle of spins by tuning the electric gate.
Among the most interesting predictions in two-dimensional materials with a Dirac cone is the existence of the zeroth Landau level (LL), equally filled by electrons and holes with opposite chirality. The gapless edge states with helical spin structure emerge from Zeeman splitting at the LL filling factor $ν=0$ gapped quantum Hall state. We present observations of a giant nonlocal four-terminal transport in zero-gap HgTe quantum wells at the $ν=0$ quantum Hall state. Our experiment clearly demonstrates the existence of the robust helical edge state in a system with single valley Dirac cone mater…
A quantum Hall edge state provides a rich foundation to study electrons in 1-dimension (1d) but is limited to chiral propagation along a single direction. Here, we demonstrate a versatile platform to realize new 1d systems made by combining quantum Hall edge states of opposite chiralities in a graphene electron-hole bilayer. Using this approach, we engineer helical 1d edge conductors where the counterpropagating modes are localized in separate electron and hole layers by a tunable electric field. These helical conductors exhibit strong nonlocal transport signals and suppressed backscattering d…
The recent experimental observations of the quantum Hall effect in 3D topological semimetals have attracted great attention, but there are still debates on its origin. We systematically study the dependence of the quantum Hall effect in topological semimetals on the thickness, Fermi energy, and growth direction, taking into account the contributions from the Fermi-arc surface states, confinement-induced bulk subbands, and helical side-surface edge states. In particular, we focus on the intensively studied Dirac semimetal Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$ and its slabs grown along experimentally accessible dire…
Electronic systems harboring one dimensional helical modes, where the spin and momentum of the electron are locked, have lately become an important field of its own. When coupled to a conventional superconductor, such systems are expected to manifest topological superconductivity, a unique phase that gives rise to exotic Majorana zero modes. Even more interesting are fractional helical states which have not been observed before and which open the route for the realization of the generalized para fermions quasiparticles. Possessing non abelian exchange statistics, these quasiparticles may serve…
We show that burying of the Dirac point in semiconductor-based quantum-spin-Hall systems can generate unexpected robustness of edge states to magnetic fields. A detailed ${\bf k\cdot p}$ band-structure analysis reveals that InAs/GaSb and HgTe/CdTe quantum wells exhibit such buried Dirac points. By simulating transport in a disordered system described within an effective model, we further demonstrate that buried Dirac points yield nearly quantized edge conduction out to large magnetic fields, consistent with recent experiments.
The ground state of charge neutral graphene under perpendicular magnetic field was predicted to be a quantum Hall topological insulator with a ferromagnetic order and spin-filtered, helical edge channels. In most experiments, however, an otherwise insulating state is observed and is accounted for by lattice-scale interactions that promote a broken-symmetry state with gapped bulk and edge excitations. We tuned the ground state of the graphene zeroth Landau level to the topological phase via a suitable screening of the Coulomb interaction with a SrTiO$_3$ high-$k$ dielectric substrate. We observ…
We report on the observation of a helical Luttinger-liquid in the edge of InAs/GaSb quantum spin Hall insulator, which shows characteristic suppression of conductance at low temperature and low bias voltage. Moreover, the conductance shows power-law behavior as a function of temperature and bias voltage. The results underscore the strong electron-electron interaction effect in transport of InAs/GaSb edge states. Because of the fact that the Fermi velocity of the edge modes is controlled by gates, the Luttinger parameter can be fine tuned. Realization of a tunable Luttinger-liquid offers a one-…
We report low-temperature transport measurements in strained InAs/Ga0.68In0.32Sb quantum wells, which supports time-reversal symmetry-protected helical edge states. The temperature and bias voltage dependence of the helical edge conductance for devices of various sizes are consistent with the theoretical expectation of a weakly interacting helical edge state. Moreover, we found that the magnetoresistance of the helical edge states is related to the edge interaction effect and the disorder strength.
We investigate nuclear spin effects in a two-dimensional electron gas in the quantum Hall regime modeled by a weakly coupled array of interacting quantum wires. We show that the presence of hyperfine interaction between electron and nuclear spins in such wires can induce a phase transition, ordering electrons and nuclear spins into a helix in each wire. Electron-electron interaction effects, pronounced within the one-dimensional stripes, boost the transition temperature up to tens to hundreds of millikelvins in GaAs. We predict specific experimental signatures of the existence of nuclear spin …
We study theoretically the two interacting one-dimensional helical modes at the edges of the quantum spin Hall systems. A new type of inter-edge correlated liquid (IECL) without the spin gap is found. This liquid shows the diverging density wave (DW) and superconductivity (SC) correlations much stronger than those of the spinfull electrons. Possible experimental observations are also discussed.
It is well known that quantum spin Hall (QSH) edge modes being helical are immune to backscattering due to non-magnetic disorder within the sample. Thus, quantum spin Hall edge modes are non-localized and show a vanishing Hall resistance along with quantized 2-terminal, longitudinal and non-local resistances even in presence of sample disorder. However, this is not the case for contact disorder. This paper shows that when all contacts are disordered in an N-terminal quantum spin Hall sample, then transport via these helical QSH edge modes can have a significant localization correction. All the…
We study the electronic transport across an electrostatically-gated lateral junction in a HgTe quantum well, a canonical 2D topological insulator, with and without applied magnetic field. We control carrier density inside and outside a junction region independently and hence tune the number and nature of 1D edge modes propagating in each of those regions. Outside the 2D gap, magnetic field drives the system to the quantum Hall regime, and chiral states propagate at the edge. In this regime, we observe fractional plateaus which reflect the equilibration between 1D chiral modes across the juncti…
The two-dimensional electron gas in a bilayer graphene in the Bernal stacking supports a variety of uniform broken-symmetry ground states in Landau level N=0 at integer filling factors $ν\in [-3,4].$ When an electric potential difference (or bias) is applied between the layers at filling factors $ν=-1,3$, the ground state evolves from an interlayer coherent state at small bias to a state with orbital coherence at higher bias where \textit{electric} dipoles associated with the orbital pseudospins order spontaneously in the plane of the layers. In this paper, we show that by further increasing t…

Although indications are that a single chiral quantum anomalous Hall(QAH) edge mode might have been experimentally detected. There have been very many recent experiments which conjecture that a single chiral QAH edge mode always materializes along with a pair of quasi-helical quantum spin Hall (QSH) edge modes. The reason for this seems to lie in the origin of QAH edge modes. These evolve from QSH edge modes via suppression of one of the spin edge modes by application of a ferromagnet or magnetic impurity. In this work we deal with a substantial 'What If ?' question- in case the QSH edge modes…
We study the dynamics of a quantum spin Hall edge coupled to a magnet with its own dynamics. Using spin transfer torque principles, we analyze the interplay between spin currents in the edge state and dynamics of the axis of the magnet, and draw parallels with circuit analogies. As a highlighting feature, we show that while coupling to a magnet typically renders the edge state insulating by opening a gap, in the presence of a small potential bias, spin-transfer torque can restore perfect conductance by transferring angular momentum to the magnet. In the presence of interactions within the edge…
Ferromagnetic transitions between quantum Hall states with different polarization at a fixed filling factor can be studied by varying the ratio of cyclotron and Zeeman energies in tilted magnetic field experiments. However, an ability to locally control such transitions at a fixed magnetic field would open a range of attractive applications, e.g. formation of a reconfigurable network of one-dimensional helical domain walls in a two-dimensional plane. Coupled to a superconductor, such domain walls can support non-Abelian excitation. In this article we report development of heterostructures wher…
We measure microwave photocurrent in devices made from InAs/GaInSb bilayers where both insulating bulk state and conducting edge state were observed in the inverted-band regime, consistent with the theoretical prediction for a quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator. It has been theoretically proposed that microwave photocurrent could be a unique probe in studying the properties of QSH edge states. To distinguish possible photoresponse between bulk state and helical edge state, we prepare Hall bar and Corbino disk from the same wafer. Results show that the Corbino disk samples have a negligible phot…
The thermoelectric properties of a three terminal quantum spin Hall (QSH) sample are examined. Inherent helicity of the QSH sample helps to generate a large charge power efficiently. Along with charge the system can be designed to work as a highly efficient spin heat engine too. The advantage of a helical over a chiral sample is that, while a multiterminal quantum Hall sample can only work as a quantum heat engine due to broken time reversal(TR) symmetry, a multiterminal QSH system can work effectively both as a charge/spin heat engine as well as a charge/spin refrigerator as TR symmetry is pr…
A two-dimensional time-reversal symmetric topological superconductor is a fully gapped system possessing a helical Majorana mode on the edges. This helical Majorana edge mode (HMEM), which is a Kramer's pair of two chiral Majorana edge modes in the opposite propagating directions, is robust under time-reversal symmetry protection. We propose a feasible setup and accessible measurement to provide the preliminary step of the HMEM realization by studying superconducting antiferromagnetic quantum spin Hall insulators. Since this antiferromagnetic topological insulator hosts a helical electron edge…

Quantum spin Hall insulator is characterized by the helical edge states, with the spin polarization of electron being locked to its direction of motion. Although the edge-state conduction has been observed, unambiguous evidence of the helical spin texture is still lacking. Here, we investigate the coherent edge-state transport in an interference loop pinched by two point contacts. Due to the helical character, the forward inter-edge scattering enforces a $π$ spin rotation. Two successive processes can only produce a nontrivial $2π$ or trivial $0$ spin rotation, which can be controlled by the R…
An infinite edge of a quantum Hall system prohibits indirect exchange coupling between two spins whereas a quantum spin-Hall edge prohibits out-of-plane coupling. In this study we analyze an unexpected breakdown of this behaviors in a finite system, where the two spins can interact also via a longer path that traverses the whole perimeter of the system. We explain this using an analytical model as well as using tight binding models in real space. Based on this finding, we propose how using a lead far away from the spins can switch the coupling on and off among them non-locally.
Domain walls in fractional quantum Hall ferromagnets are gapless helical one-dimensional channels formed at the boundaries of topologically distinct quantum Hall (QH) liquids. Naïvely, these helical domain walls (hDWs) constitute two counter-propagating chiral states with opposite spins. Coupled to an s-wave superconductor, helical channels are expected to lead to topological superconductivity with high order non-Abelian excitations. Here we investigate transport properties of hDWs in the $ν=2/3$ fractional QH regime. Experimentally we found that current carried by hDWs is substantially smalle…
We propose and analyze the non-equilibrium finite frequency current-current correlations as a mean to characterize the helical nature of the edge states in a quantum spin hall geometry. We show that the finite frequency noise enables to unambiguously discriminate between the one-particle and the two-particles processes occurring in the helical liquid for both tunneling or weak-backscattering regimes.
The transversal propagation of the edge states in a two-dimensional quantum spin Hall system are classified by decay characteristic quantity $λ$. Two different modes of the helical edge states exhibit distinct behaviors. The penetration depth is momentum dependent in normal edge states. The finite size gap decays monotonously with sample width, leading to the normal size effect. In contrast, the penetration depth maintains a uniform minimal value in the special edge states with much shorter length. The finite size gap decays non-monotonously with width, leading to the anomalous finite size eff…
Following the recent observation of the quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect in HgTe quantum wells, an important issue is to understand the effect of impurities on transport in the QSH regime. Using linear response and renormalization group methods, we calculate the edge conductance of a QSH insulator as a function of temperature in the presence of a magnetic impurity. At high temperatures, Kondo and/or two-particle scattering give rise to a logarithmic temperature dependence. At low temperatures, for weak Coulomb interactions in the edge liquid the conductance is restored to unitarity with unusual …
In this work, we predict a hinged quantum spin-Hall (HQSH) effect featured by a pair of helical hinge modes in antiferromagnetic (AFM) topological insulator (TI) multilayers. This pair of helical hinge modes are localized on the hinges of the top and bottom surfaces of the AFM TI multilayers. Unlike the conventional QSH effect, the HQSH effect survives the breaking of time-reversal symmetry (TRS) and thus represents a different kind of topological phenomenon. The helical hinge modes are sustainable to inelastic scattering and TRS-breaking disorder, which can be observed in macroscopic samples.…
One-dimensional helical liquids can appear at boundaries of certain condensed matter systems. Two prime examples are the edge of a quantum spin Hall insulator and the hinge of a three-dimensional second-order topological insulator. For these materials, the presence of a helical state at the boundary serves as a signature of their nontrivial electronic bulk topology. Additionally, these boundary states are of interest themselves, as a novel class of strongly correlated low-dimensional systems with interesting potential applications. Here, we review existing results on such helical liquids in se…
Quantum spin Hall insulators are characterized by topologically protected counterpropagating edge states. Here we study the dynamical response of these helical edge states under a time-dependent flux biasing, in the presence of a heat bath. It is shown that the relaxation time of the edge carriers can be determined from a measurement of the dissipative response of topological insulator disks. The effects of various perturbations, including Zeeman coupling and disorder, are also discussed.
We present the microscopic treatment of edge magnetoplasmons (EMPs) for the regime of not-too-low temperatures defined by the condition $\hbar ω_{c}\gg k_{B}T\gg \hbar v_{g}/2\ell_{0}$, where $v_{g}$ is the group velocity of the edge states, $\ell_{0}=\sqrt{\hbar /m^{\ast}ω_{c}}$ is the magnetic length and $ω_{c}$ is the cyclotron frequency. We find a weakly damped symmetric mode, named helical edge magnetoplasmon, which is localized at the edge states region for filling factors $ν=1, 2$ and \textit{very strong dissipation} $η_{T}=ξ/k_{x}\ell_{T}\agt\ln (1/k_{x}\ell_{T})\gg 1$, where the chara…
We study theoretically reflection problem in the junction between a normal metal and an insulator characterized by a parameter $M$, which is a usual insulator for $M>0$ or a quantum spin Hall system for $M<0$. The spin rotation angle $α$ at the reflection is obtained in the plane of $M$ and the incident angle $θ$ measured from the normal to the interface. The $α$ shows rich structures around the quantum critical point M=0 and $θ=0$, i.e., $α$ can be as large as $\sim π$ at an incident angle in the quatum spin Hall case $M<0$ because the helical edge modes resonantly enhance the spin rotation, …
We consider the proximity effect between a singlet s-wave superconductor and the edge of a Quantum Spin Hall (QSH) topological insulator. We establish that Andreev reflection at a QSH edge state/superconductor interface is perfect while nonlocal Andreev processes through the superconductor are totally suppressed. We compute the corresponding conductance and noise.
A Cooper-pair or electron-hole splitter is a device capable of spatially separating entangled fermionic quasiparticles into mesoscopic solid-state systems such as quantum dots or quantum wires. We theoretically study such a splitter based on a pair of helical Luttinger liquids, which arise naturally at the edges of a quantum spin Hall insulator. Equipping each helical liquid with a beam splitter, current-current cross correlations can be used to construct a Bell inequality whose violation would indicate nonlocal orbital entanglement of the injected electrons and/or holes. Due to Luttinger-liqu…
We consider a Josephson junction hosting a Kramers pair of helical edge states of a quantum spin Hall bar in contact with a normal-metal probe. In this hybrid system, the orbital phase induced by a small magnetic field threading the junction known as Doppler shift (DS), combines with the conventional Josephson phase difference and originates an effect akin to a Zeeman field in the spectrum. As a consequence, when a temperature bias is applied to the superconducting terminals, a thermoelectric current is established in the normal probe. We argue that this purely non-local thermoelectric effect …
We show that edges of Quantum Spin Hall topological insulators represent a natural platform for realization of exotic supersolid phase. On one hand, fermionic edge modes are helical due to the nontrivial topology of the bulk. On the other hand, a disorder at the edge or magnetic adatoms may produce a dense array of localized spins interacting with the helical electrons. The spin subsystem is magnetically frustrated since the indirect exchange favors formation of helical spin order and the direct one favors (anti)ferromagnetic ordering of the spins. At a moderately strong direct exchange, the c…
The interaction of a magnetic insulator with the helical electronic edge of a two-dimensional topological insulator has been shown to lead to many interesting phenomena. One of these is that for a suitable orientation of the magnetic anisotropy axis, the exchange coupling to an easy-plane magnet has no effect on DC electrical transport through a helical edge, despite the fact that it opens a gap in the spectrum of the helical edge [Meng {\em et al.}, Phys.\ Rev.\ B {\bf 90}, 205403 (2014)]. Here, we theoretically consider such a magnet embedded in an interferometer, consisting of a pair of hel…
A single pair of helical edge states as realized at the boundary of a quantum spin Hall insulator is known to be robust against elastic single particle backscattering as long as time reversal symmetry is preserved. However, there is no symmetry preventing inelastic backscattering as brought about by phonons in the presence of Rashba spin orbit coupling. In this letter, we show that the quantized conductivity of a single channel of helical Dirac electrons is protected even against this inelastic mechanism to leading order. We further demonstrate that this result remains valid even when Coulomb …
Low-dimensional electronic systems have traditionally been obtained by electrostatically confining electrons, either in heterostructures or in intrinsically nanoscale materials such as single molecules, nanowires, and graphene. Recently, a new paradigm has emerged with the advent of symmetry-protected surface states on the boundary of topological insulators, enabling the creation of electronic systems with novel properties. For example, time reversal symmetry (TRS) endows the massless charge carriers on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator with helicity, locking the orienta…
The presence of a Majorana bound state in condensed matter systems is often associated to a zero bias peak in conductance measurements. Here, we analyze a system were this paradigm is violated. A Majorana bound state is always present at the interface between a quantum spin Hall system that is magnetically gapped and a quantum spin Hall system gapped by proximity induced s-wave superconductivity. However, the linear conductance could be either zero or nonzero and quantized depending on the energy and length scales of the barriers. The transition between the two values is reminiscent of the top…
Quantum Hall edge modes are chiral while quantum spin Hall edge modes are helical. However, unlike chiral edge modes which always occur in topological systems, quasi-helical edge modes may arise in a trivial insulator too. These trivial quasi-helical edge modes are not topologically protected and therefore need to be distinguished from helical edge modes arising due to topological reasons. Earlier conductance measurements were used to identify these helical states, in this work we report on the advantage of using the non local shot noise as a probe for the helical nature of these states as als…
In this work we use electrostatic control of quantum Hall ferromagnetic transitions in CdMnTe quantum wells to study electron transport through individual domain walls (DWs) induced at a specific location. These DWs are formed due to hybridization of two counter-propagating edge states with opposite spin polarization. Conduction through DWs is found to be symmetric under magnetic field direction reversal, consistent with the helical nature of these DWs. We observe that long domain walls are in the insulating regime with localization length 4 - 6~$μ$m. In shorter DWs the resistance saturates to…
We study the DC spin current induced into an unbiased quantum spin Hall system through a two-point contacts setup with time dependent electron tunneling amplitudes. By means of two external gates, it is possible to drive a current with spin-preserving and spin-flipping contributions showing peculiar oscillations as a function of pumping frequency, electron-electron interaction and temperature. From its interference patterns as a function of the Fabry-Perot and Aharonov-Bohm phases, it is possible to extract information about the helical nature of the edge states and the intensity of the electr…
Topological insulators (TIs) are a novel class of materials with nontrivial surface or edge states. Time-reversal symmetry (TRS) protected TIs are characterized by the Z2 topological invariant and their helical property becomes lost in an applied magnetic field. Currently there exist extensive efforts searching for TIs that are protected by symmetries other than TRS. Here we show, a topological phase characterized by a spin Chern topological invariant is realized in an inverted electron-hole bilayer engineered from indium arsenide-gallium antimonide (InAs/GaSb) semiconductors which retains rob…
The discovery of the Quantum Spin Hall state, and topological insulators in general, has sparked strong experimental efforts. Transport studies of the Quantum Spin Hall state confirmed the presence of edge states, showed ballistic edge transport in micron-sized samples and demonstrated the spin polarization of the helical edge states. While these experiments have confirmed the broad theoretical model, the properties of the QSH edge states have not yet been investigated on a local scale. Using Scanning Gate Microscopy to perturb the QSH edge states on a sub-micron scale, we identify well-locali…
Transport by helical edge states of a quantum spin Hall insulator is experimentally characterized by a weakly temperature-dependent mean free path of a few microns and by reproducible conductance oscillations, challenging proposed theoretical explanations. We consider a model where edge electrons experience spatially random Rashba spin-orbit coupling and couple to a magnetic impurity with spin S >= 1/2. In a finite bias steady state, we find for S > 1/2 an impurity induced resistance with a temperature dependence in agreement with experiments. Since backscattering is elastic, interference betw…
The current through a helical edge state of a quantum-spin-Hall insulator may be fully transmitted through a magnetically gapped region due to a combination of spin-transfer torque and spin pumping [Meng {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 90}, 205403 (2014)]. Using a scattering approach, we here argue that in such a system the current is effectively carried by electrons with energies below the magnet-induced gap and well below the Fermi energy. This has striking consequences, such as the absence of shot noise, an exponential suppression of thermal noise, and an obstruction of thermal transport. F…

Nontrivial topology of interfaces separating anti-chiral phases in helical magnets result in new effects as they interact with spin polarized current. These interfces or vortex walls consist of a one dimensional array of vortex lines. Topological Hall effect comes as a natural expectation. Also Lenz's law will result in a new damping mechanism in these systems. We study the dynamics of these wall interacting with electric current and use fundamental electromagntic laws to calculate this effect. On the other hand discrete nature of these walls affects their pinning and result in low depinning c…
We consider a four-terminal Aharonov-Bohm interference setup formed out of two edges of a quantum spin Hall insulator, supporting helical Luttinger liquids (HLLs). We show that the temperature and bias dependence of the interference oscillations are linked to the amount of spin flips in tunneling between two HLLs which is a unique signature of a HLL. We predict that spin dephasing depends on the electron-electron (e-e) interaction but differently from the charge dephasing due to distinct dominant tunneling excitations. In contrast, in a spinful Luttinger liquid with SU(2) invariance, uncharged…
We have experimentally confirmed the quantum Hall ferromagnetic state with Chern number ν=0, characterized by the helical edge state, in a layered organic Dirac fermion system α-(BEDT-TTF)_2I_3. The interlayer resistance saturates at low temperatures and high magnetic fields. It does not scale with the sample cross-sectional area in the saturating region, and resonantly depends on the magnetic field direction. These results strongly suggest that the helical edge state dominates transport. This is the first observation of the topological phase in organic molecular crystals.
Due to nonzero intrinsic spin-orbit interaction in buckled honeycomb crystal structures, silicene and germanene exhibit interesting topological properties, and are therefore candidates for the realization of the quantum spin Hall effect. We employ the Kane-Mele model to investigate the electron states in hexagonal silicene and germanene nanorings having either zigzag or armchair edges in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. We present results for the energy spectra as function of magnetic field, the electron density of the spin-up and spin-down states in the ring plane, and the calc…
