We analyze the quantum entanglement between opposite spin projection electrons in the ground state of the Anderson impurity model. In this model, a single level impurity with intralevel repulsion U is tunnel coupled to a free electron gas. The Anderson model presents a strongly correlated many body ground state with mass enhanced quasiparticle excitations. We find, using both analytical and numerical tools, that the quantum entanglement between opposite spin projection electrons is a monotonic universal function of the quasiparticle mass enhancement Z. The mass enhancement, which is used to quantify the correlations in quantum many body systems, could therefore be used to quantify spin entanglement.
A fascinating type of symmetry-protected topological states of matter are topological Kondo insulators, where insulating behavior arises from Kondo screening of localized moments via conduction electrons, and non-trivial topology emerges from the structure of the hybridization between the local-moment and conduction bands. Here we study the physics of Kondo holes, i.e., missing local moments, in three-dimensional topological Kondo insulators, using a self-consistent real-space mean-field theory. Such Kondo holes quite generically induce in-gap states which, for Kondo holes at or near the surfa…
We study spectral properties of quasiparticles in the Kondo lattice model in one and two dimensions including the coherent quasiparticle dispersions, their spectral weights and the full two-quasiparticle spectrum using a cluster expansion scheme. We investigate the evolution of the quasiparticle band as antiferromagnetic correlations are enhanced towards the RKKY limit of the model. In both the 1D and the 2D model we find that a repulsive interaction between quasiparticles results in a distinct antibound state above the two-quasiparticle continuum. The repulsive interaction is correlated with …
We study the spectral properties of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model as function of the exchange coupling, the band filling, and the quasimomentum in the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phase. Using the density-matrix renormalization group method, we compute the dispersion relation of the quasiparticles, their lifetimes, and the Z-factor. As a main result, we provide evidence for the existence of the spinpolaron at partial band fillings. We find that the quasiparticle lifetime differs by orders of magnitude between the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phase and depends strongly on the quas…
A formulation of the Kondo lattice Hamiltonian in terms of bond particles is derived and solved in two different approximations. The bond particles correspond to the eigenstates of a single unit cell and are bosons for states with even electron number and fermions for states with an odd electron number. A s a check various physical quantities are calculated for the 1D Kondo insulator a nd good agreement with numerical results is obtained for J/t>1.
We study the quasiparticle spectrum in an underscreened Kondo-lattice (KL) model that involves a single spin degenerate conduction band and two crystalline-electric-field (CEF) split Kramers doublets coupled by both orbital-diagonal and non-diagonal exchange interactions. We find the three quasiparticle bands of the model using a constrained fermionic mean field approach. While two bands are similar to the one-orbital model a new genuinely heavy band inside the main hybridization gap appears in the quasiquartet model. Its dispersion is due to effective hybridization with conduction states but …
An impurity four-level Kondo model, in which an ion is tunneling among 4-stable points and interacting with surrounding conduction electrons, is investigated using both perturbative and numerical renormalization group methods. The results of numerical renormalization group studies show that it is possible to construct the ground state wavefunction including the excited ion states if we take into account the interaction between the conduction electrons and the ion. The resultant effective mass of quasiparticles is moderately enhanced. This result offers a good explanation for the enhanced and m…
A new ``Dynamical Mean-field theory'' based approach for the Kondo lattice model with quantum spins is introduced. The inspection of exactly solvable limiting cases and several known approximation methods, namely the second-order perturbation theory, the self-consistent CPA and finally a moment-conserving decoupling of the equations of motion help in evaluating the new approach. This comprehensive investigation gives some certainty to our results: Whereas our method is somewhat limited in the investigation of the J<0-model, the results for J>0 reveal important aspects of the physics of the mod…
The strong coupling half-filled Kondo lattice model is an important example of a strongly interacting dense Fermi system for which conventional Fermi gas analysis has thus far failed. We remedy this by deriving an exact transformation that maps the model to a dilute gas of weakly interacting electron and hole quasiparticles that can then be analyzed by conventional dilute Fermi gas methods. The quasiparticle vacuum is a singlet Mott insulator for which the quasiparticle dynamics are simple. Since the transformation is exact, the electron spectral weight sum rules are obeyed exactly. Subtleties…
The ground state properties of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice with an f^2 configuration at each site are studied by the density matrix renormalization group method. At half-filling, competition between the Kondo exchange J and the antiferromagnetic intra f-shell exchange I leads to reduction of energy gaps for spin, quasi-particle and charge excitations. The attractive force among conduction electrons is induced by the competition and the bound state is formed. As J/I increases the f^2 singlet gives way to the Kondo singlet as the dominant local correlation. The remarkable change of the qua…
The electronic structure of the Kondo lattice CeIn3 has been studied by on-resonant angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy. A weakly dispersive quasiparticle band has been observed directly with an energy dispersion of 4 meV by photoemission, implying the existence of weak hybridization between the f electrons and conduction electrons. The hybridization is further confirmed by the formation of the hybridization gap revealed by temperature-dependent scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Moreover, we find the hybridization strength in CeIn3 is much we…
We study the density of states and the optical conductivity of a Kondo lattice which is immersed in a massless Dirac Fermi sea, as characterized by a linear dispersion relation. As a result of the hybridization $V$ with the $f$-electron levels, the pseudo-gap in the conduction band becomes duplicated and is shifted both into the upper and the lower quasiparticle band. We find that due to the linear dispersion of the Dirac fermions, the Kondo insulator gap is observable in the optical conductivity in contrast to the Kondo lattice system in a conventional conduction band, and the resulting gap\,…
Using recently developed Lanczos technique we study finite-temperature properties of the 2D Kondo lattice model at various fillings of the conduction band. At half filling the quasiparticle gap governs physical properties of the chemical potential and the charge susceptibility at small temperatures. In the intermediate coupling regime quasiparticle gap scales approximately linearly with Kondo coupling. Temperature dependence of the spin susceptibility reveals the existence of two different temperature scales. A spin gap in the intermediate regime leads to exponential drop of the spin susceptib…
Recent advances in scanning tunneling spectroscopy performed on heavy-fermion metals provide a window onto local electronic properties of composite heavy-electron quasiparticles. Here we theoretically investigate the energy and temperature evolution of single-particle spectra and their quasiparticle interference caused by point-like impurities in the framework of a periodic Anderson model. By numerically solving dynamical-mean-field-theory equations, we are able to access all temperatures and to capture the crossover from weakly interacting c and f electrons to fully coherent heavy quasipartic…
It is shown that in resistive nanowires out of equilibrium containing either single- or two-channel Kondo impurities the distribution function $f(E,U)$ obeys scaling behavior in terms of the quasiparticle energy $E$ and the bias voltage $U$. The numerically calculated $f(E,U)$ curves explain quantitatively recent experiments on Cu and Au nanowires. The systematics of the impurity concentration c_{imp} extracted from the comparison between theory and results on various Cu and Au samples strongly suggests that in these systems the scaling arises from magnetic Kondo impurities.
Strong electron correlations can give rise to extraordinary properties of metals with renormalized quasiparticles which are at the basis of Landau's Fermi liquid theory. Near a quantum critical point, these quasiparticles can be destroyed and non-Fermi liquid behavior ensues. YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ is a prototypical correlated metal as it exhibits quasiparticles formation, formation of Kondo lattice coherence and quasiparticle destruction at a field-induced quantum critical point. Here we show how, upon lowering the temperature, the Kondo lattice coherence develops and finally gives way to non-Fermi l…
We show that for the half-filled Kondo lattice model on the honeycomb lattice a Kondo breakdown occurs at small Kondo couplings $J_k$ within the magnetically ordered phase. Our conclusions are based on auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the so-called composite fermion spectral function. Within a U(1) gauge theory formulation of the Kondo model, it becomes apparent that a Higgs mechanism dictates the weight of the resonance in the spectral function. For the honeycomb lattice we observe that for small $J_k$ the quasiparticle pole gives way to incoherent spectral weight but it rem…
Quantum criticality in systems of local moments interacting with itinerant electrons has become an important and diverse field of research. Here we review recent results which concern (a) quantum phase transitions in single-impurity Kondo and Anderson models and (b) quantum phase transitions in heavy-fermion lattice models which involve critical quasiparticles. For (a) the focus will be on impurity models with a pseudogapped host density of states and their applications, e.g., in graphene and other Dirac materials, while (b) is devoted to strong-coupling behavior near antiferromagnetic quantum…
We present a many-body approach to the electronic and magnetic properties of the (multiband) Kondo-lattice model with ferromagnetic interband exchange. The coupling between itinerant conduction electrons and localized magnetic moments leads, on the one hand, to a distinct temperature-dependence of the electronic quasiparticle spectrum and, on the other hand, to magnetic properties, as e.~g.the Curie temperature T_C or the magnon dispersion, which are strongly influenced by the band electron selfenergy and therewith in particular by the carrier density. We present results for the single-band Ko…
Effective models focused on pertinent low-energy degrees of freedom have substantially contributed to our qualitative understanding of quantum materials. An iconic example, the Kondo model, was key to demonstrating that the rich phase diagrams of correlated metals originate from the interplay of localized and itinerant electrons. Modern electronic structure calculations suggest that to achieve quantitative material-specific models, accurate consideration of the crystal field and spin-orbit interactions is imperative. This poses the question of how local high-energy degrees of freedom become in…
In a superconductor with magnetic impurities, Kondo scattering results in the formation of localized states inside the superconducting gap. We show that inelastic electronic transitions involving quasiparticle scattering into and out of the localized states may result in significant changes in the non equilibrium properties of the superconductor. Using the model of Muller-Hartmann and Zittartz for the extreme dilute limit, and including both deformation potential and spin-lattice coupling we have calculated the rates of such inelastic transitions between continuum and discrete states, and show…
We analyze the physics of a one-orbital Anderson impurity model in a two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit (RSO) interactions in the Kondo regime. The spin SU(2) symmetry breaking results in an effective two-band electron gas coupled to the impurity. The Kondo regime is obtained by a Schrieffer-Wolff transformation revealing the existence of a parity breaking term with the form of the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interaction. The DM term vanishes at the particle-hole symmetric point of the system, but it has important effects otherwise. Performing a renormalization gro…
The Kondo-Heisenberg model is used for a microscopic demonstration of existence of a peculiar metallic state with unbroken translational symmetry where the Fermi surface volume is not controlled by the total electron density. I use a non-perturbative approach where the strongest interactions are taken into account by means of exact solution, and corrections are controllable. In agreement with the general requirements formulated in (T. Senthil {\it et.al.} Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 90}, 216403 (2003)), the resulting metallic state represents a fractionalized Fermi liquid where well defined quasipar…
Carrier-induced ferromagnetism is investigated in a diluted ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model for several ordered impurity arrangements on square and cubic lattices, allowing for quantitative comparison with different theoretical pictures. The spin stiffness is found to be optimized with respect to hole doping concentration, exchange interaction strength, as well as spin dilution due to a competition involving magnitude of carrier spin polarization and its oscillation length scale. The ferromagnetic transition temperature determined within the spin-fluctuation theory is in good agreement with …
Hund's metals are multi-orbital systems with $3d$ or $4d$ electrons exhibiting both itinerant character and local moments, and they feature Kondo-like screenings of local orbital and spin moments, with suppressed coherence temperature driven by Hund's coupling $J_H$. They often exhibit magnetic order at low temperature, but how the interaction between the Kondo-like screening and long-range magnetic order is manifested in the quasiparticle spectrum remains an open question. Here we present spectroscopic signature of such interaction in a Hund's metal candidate MnSi exhibiting weak ferromagneti…
One of the most successful paradigms of many-body physics is the concept of quasiparticles: excitations in strongly interacting matter behaving like weakly interacting particles in free space. Quasiparticles in metals are very robust objects. Yet, when a system's ground state undergoes a qualitative change at a quantum critical point (QCP), the quasiparticles may disintegrate and give way to an exotic quantum-fluid state of matter. The nature of this breakdown is intensely debated, because the emergent quantum fluid dominates the material properties up to high temperature and might even be rel…
Within condensed-matter systems, strong electronic interactions often lead to exotic quantum phases. A recent manifestation of this is the unexpected observation of magnetic quantum oscillations and metallic thermal transport, both properties of systems with Fermi surfaces of itinerant quasiparticles, in the Kondo insulators SmB6 and YbB$_{12}$. To understand these phenomena, it is informative to study their evolution as the energy gap of the Kondo-Insulator state is closed by a large magnetic field. We show here that both the quantum-oscillation frequency and the cyclotron mass display a stro…
We have investigated heavy-fermion behavior of the transition-metal oxides ACu3Ru4O12 (A = Na, Ca, La, and their mixtures). It has been known that CaCu3Ru4O12 exhibits Kondo-like behavior attributable to Cu2+ 3d electrons, similar to that of some Ce-based heavy-fermion systems. However, we find striking "suppression" of the mass enhancement in CaCu3Ru4O12, in which the Kondo-like effect is most pronounced. Such decrease of the density of states is reminiscent of the coherent gap formation in Kondo lattice systems. Nevertheless, the behavior can not be interpreted within the conventional Kondo …
We propose an energy-scale correspondence between the Mott physics and the Kondo lattice physics and construct a tentative phase diagram of their correlated electrons with two characteristic energy scales $ω^*$ and $Ω$ marking the upper boundary of a low-energy regime with well-developed long-range coherence and the lower boundary of localized spectral weight in the energy space, respectively. In between, there exists a crossover region with emergent but damped quasiparticle excitations. We argue that the presence of two separate energy scales is a generic property of correlated electrons on a…
We develop an interpolating self-energy approach to the correlated Kondo-lattice model. The correlation of the band electrons is taken into account by a Hubbard interaction. The method is based on a self-energy ansatz, the structure of which allows to fulfill a maximum number of exactly solvable limiting cases. The parameters of the ansatz are fitted to spectral moments via high-energy expansion of the self-energy. The band electron correlations are taken into account by an effective medium approach being correct in the strong coupling (U) regime. The theory is considered reliable for all temp…
The 2D half-filled Kondo lattice model with exchange J and nearest neighbor hopping t is considered. It is shown that this model belongs to a class of Hamiltonians for which zero-temperature auxiliary field Monte Carlo methods may be efficiently applied. We compute the staggered moment, spin and quasiparticle gaps on lattice sizes up to 12 X 12. The competition between the RKKY interaction and Kondo effect leads to a continuous quantum phase transition between antiferromagnetic and spin-gaped insulators. This transition occurs at J/t = 1.45 \pm 0.05.
The Kondo lattice model of spin-1/2 local moments coupled to the conduction electrons at half-filling is studied for its orbital response to magnetic field on bipartite lattices. Through an effective charge dynamics, in a canonical representation of electrons that appropriately describes the Kondo insulating ground state, the magnetization is found to show de Haas-van Alphen oscillations from intermediate to weak Kondo coupling. These oscillations are ascribed to Lifshitz-like inversion of a dispersion of the gapped quasiparticles, whose chemical potential surface is measured by the oscillatio…
We discuss the quasiparticle band structure of the antiferromagnetic phase of the planar Kondo lattice model with a half-filled conduction band, the so-called Kondo insulator. The band structure is obtained by bond fermion technique and good agreement is obtained with the single particle spectral function obtained by Dynamical Cluster Approximation. In particular, various changes of the band structure with J/t observed in the numerical spectra are reproduced qualitatively by the calculation. In the absence of Fermi surface nesting we find a semimetallic phase for sufficiently small exchange co…
A theory for anomalous enhancement of NMR relaxation rate $1/T_{1}T$ of $^{125}$Te toward zero temperature observed in Pb$_{1-x}$Tl$_{x}$Te ($x$=0.01) is presented on the idea of the charge Kondo effect of valence skipping element Tl. It is found that such enhancement in $1/T_{1}T$ is caused through enhancement of the pair-hopping and inter-orbital interactions between 6s electrons localized on Tl site and conduction electrons doped in the hole band the semiconductor PbTe, which is the heart of the charge Kondo effect. It is also found that the Knight shift is not influenced in the temperature…
We investigate the Kondo effect in a quantum dot with almost degenerate spin-singlet and triplet states for an even number of electrons. We show that the Kondo temperature as a function of the energy difference between the states Delta reaches its maximum around Delta=0 and decreases with increasing Delta. The Kondo effect is thus enhanced by competition between singlet and triplet states. Our results explain recent experimental findings. We evaluate the linear conductance in the perturbative regime.
We investigate a Kondo lattice model with correlated conduction electrons. Within dynamical mean-field theory the model maps onto an impurity model where the host has to be determined self-consistently. This impurity model can be derived from an Anderson-Hubbard model both by equating the low-energy excitations of the impurity and by a canonical transformation. On the level of dynamical mean-field theory this establishes the connection of the two lattice models. The impurity model is studied numerically by an extension of the non-crossing approximation to a two-orbital impurity. We find that w…
We study the two-dimensional Kondo lattice model with an additional Heisenberg exchange between localized spins. In a first step we use mean-field theory with two order parameters. The first order parameter is a complex pairing amplitude between conduction electrons and localized spins which describes condensation of Kondo (or Zhang-Rice) singlets. A nonvanishing value implies that the localized spins contribute to the Fermi surface volume. The second order parameter describes singlet-pairing between the localized spins and competes with the Kondo-pairing order parameter. Reduction of the carr…
The low-temperature behavior of the asymmetric single-impurity Anderson model is studied by diagrammatic methods resulting in analytically controllable approximations. We first discuss the ways one can simplify parquet equations in critical regions of singularities in the two-particle vertex. The scale vanishing at the critical point defines the Kondo temperature at which the electron-hole correlation function saturates. We show that the Kondo temperature exists at any filling of the impurity level. A quasiparticle resonance peak in the spectral function, however, forms only in almost electron…
Resolving the heavy fermion band in the conduction electron momentum resolved spectral function of the Kondo lattice model is challenging since, in the weak coupling limit, its spectral weight is exponentially small. In this article we consider a composite fermion operator, consisting of a conduction electron dressed by spin fluctuations that shares the same quantum numbers as the electron operator. Using approximation free auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo simulations we show that for the SU(2) spin-symmetric model on the square lattice at half filling, the composite fermion acts as a magni…
YbCo$_2$Ge$_4$ is a clean paramagnetic Kondo lattice which displays non-Fermi liquid behavior. We report a detailed investigation of the specific heat, magnetic Grüneisen parameter ($Γ_{\rm mag}$) and temperature derivative of the magnetization ($M$) on a high-quality single crystal at temperatures down to $0.1$~K and magnetic fields up to 7~T. $Γ_{\rm mag}$ and $dM/dT$ display a divergence upon cooling and obey $T/B$ scaling. Similar behavior has previously been found in several other Yb-based Kondo lattices and related to a zero-field quantum critical point without fine tuning of pressure or…
The half-filled Kondo lattice model is studied at low temperatures on simple cubic lattice using the self-consistent theory developed in Phys. Rev. B 96, 075115 (2017). It is found to have three distinct insulating phases in the temperature-hopping plane, namely, the strong coupling Kondo singlet (KS) phase, the inverted Kondo singlet (iKS) phase distinguished from the KS by inversion, and the antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase. The quasiparticle density of states across the inversion transition is noted to exhibit dimensional reduction, which can differentiate between the KS and iKS insulators in …
We investigate the paramagnetic periodic Anderson model using the dynamical mean-field theory in combination with the modified perturbation theory which interpolates between the weak and strong coupling limits. For the symmetric PAM, the ground state is always a singlet state. However, as function of the hybridization strength, a crossover from collective to local Kondo screening is found. Reducing the number of conduction electrons, the local Kondo singlets remain stable. The unpaired f-electrons dominate the physics of the system. For very low conduction electron densities, a large increase …
The spin and orbital Kondo effects and the related shot noise for a laterally coupled double quantum dot are studied taking account of coherent indirect coupling via a reservoir. We calculate the linear conductance and shot noise for various charge states to distinguish between the spin and orbital Kondo effects. We find that a novel antiferromagnetic exchange coupling can be generated by the coherent indirect coupling, and it works to suppress the spin Kondo effect when each quantum dot holds just one electron. We also show that we can capture the feature of the pseudospin Kondo effect from t…
We study transport properties of a charge qubit coupling two chiral Luttinger liquids, realized by two antidots placed between the edges of an integer $ν=1$ or fractional $ν=1/3$ quantum Hall bar. We show that in the limit of a large capacitive coupling between the antidots, their quasiparticle occupancy behaves as a pseudo-spin corresponding to an orbital Kondo impurity coupled to a chiral Luttinger liquid, while the inter antidot tunnelling acts as an impurity magnetic field. The latter tends to destabilize the Kondo fixed point for the $ν=1/3$ fractional Hall state, producing an effective i…
We examine the transport properties of a double quantum dot system coupled to a topological superconducting nanowire hosting Majorana quasiparticles at its ends, with the central quantum dot attached to the left and right leads. We focus on the behavior of the local density of states and the linear conductance, calculated with the aid of the numerical renormalization group method, to describe the influence of the Majorana coupling on the low-temperature transport properties induced by the Kondo correlations. In particular, we show that the presence of Majorana quasiparticles in the system affe…
We present a perturbation theory for studying thermodynamic properties of the Kondo spin liquid phase of the half-filled Kondo lattice model. The grand partition function is derived to calculate chemical potential, spin and charge susceptibilities and specific heat. The treatment is applicable to the model with strong couplings in any dimensions (one, two and three dimensions). The chemical potential equals zero at any temperatures, satisfying the requirement of the particle-hole symmetry. Thermally activated behaviors of the spin(charge) susceptibility due to the spin(quasiparticle) gap can b…
Quantum criticality that goes beyond the Landau framework of order-parameter fluctuations is playing a central role in elucidating the behavior of strange metals. A prominent case appears in Kondo lattice systems, which have been extensively analysed in terms of an effective Bose-Fermi Kondo model. Here, a spin is simultaneously coupled to conduction electron bands and gapless vector bosons that represent magnetic fluctuations. The Bose-Fermi Kondo model features interacting fixed points of Kondo destruction with such properties as dynamical Planckian ($\hbar ω/ k_{\rm B} T$) scaling and loss …
We propose a model intended to qualitatively capture the electron-electron interaction physics of two-dimensional electron gases formed near transition-metal oxide heterojunctions containing $t_{2g}$ electrons with a density much smaller than one electron per metal atom. Two-dimensional electron systems of this type can be described perturbatively using a $GW$ approximation which predicts that Coulomb interactions enhance quasiparticle effective masses more strongly than in simple two-dimensional electron gases, and that they reshape the Fermi surface, reducing its anisotropy.
Using a large-N approach, we study the effect of disorder in the Kondo-screened phase of heavy-fermion materials. We demonstrate that the strong feedback between the hybridization and the conduction electron charge density magnifies the effect of disorder, such that already small concentrations of defects strongly disorder the materials' local electronic structure, while only weakly affecting their spatially averaged, thermodynamic properties. Finally, we show that the microscopic nature of defects can be identified through their characteristic signatures in the hybridization and quasiparticle…
The mechanism underlying the enhancement of the Sommerfeld coefficient of quasiparticles at the first-order metamagnetic transition in UTe_2, reported by Miyake et al. in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 88, 063706 (2019), is discussed theoretically by taking into account the ferromagnetic order-parameter fluctuations on the basis of the Landau theory of phase transition. We find that the enhanced ferromagnetic spin fluctuation gives rise to the enhancement of the effective mass of the quasiparticles or the Sommerfeld coefficient γ,which is consistent with the experimental observations. At the same time, th…
Recent experimental work has brought the twin issues of the origin of non-Lifshitz-Kosevich scaling in de Haas van Alphen (dHvA) and its precise relation to anomalously broad non-quasiparticle spectral features in "strange" metals, to the forefront. Here, we revisit these issues in the specific context of a "local" quantum critical phase in an extended periodic Anderson model (EPAM). In contrast to the famed Kondo-RKKY scenarios for local quantum criticality, strong local valence fluctuations cause Kondo destruction in the EPAM. We uncover a common underlying element, namely, the Kondo-destruc…
Electrons navigate more easily in a background of ordered magnetic moments than around randomly oriented ones. This fundamental quantum mechanical principle is due to their Bloch wave nature and also underlies ballistic electronic motion in a perfect crystal. As a result, a paramagnetic metal that develops ferromagnetic order often experiences a sharp drop in the resistivity. Despite the universality of this phenomenon, a direct observation of the impact of ferromagnetic order on the electronic quasiparticles in a magnetic metal is still lacking. Here we demonstrate that quasiparticles experie…
We study the symmetric periodic Anderson model of the conduction electrons hybridized with the localized correlated electrons on square lattice. Using the canonical representation of electrons by Kumar, we do a self-consistent theory of its effective charge and spin dynamics, which produces an insulating ground state that undergoes continuous transition from the Kondo singlet to Néel antiferromagnetic phase with decreasing hybridization, and uncovers two inversion transitions for the charge quasiparticles. With suitably inverted quasiparticle bands for moderate to weaker effective Kondo coupli…
We study single hole dynamics in the bilayer Heisenberg and Kondo Necklace models. Those models exhibit a magnetic order-disorder quantum phase transition as a function of the interlayer coupling J_perp. At strong coupling in the disordered phase, both models have a single-hole dispersion relation with band maximum at p = (π,π) and an effective mass at this p-point which scales as the hopping matrix element t. In the Kondo Necklace model, we show that the effective mass at p = (π,π) remains finite for all considered values of J_perp such that the strong coupling features of the dispersion rela…
We report magnetic quantum oscillations measured using torque magnetisation in the Kondo insulator YbB$_{12}$ and discuss the potential origin of the underlying Fermi surface. Observed quantum oscillations as well as complementary quantities such as a finite linear specific heat capacity in YbB$_{12}$ exhibit similarities with the Kondo insulator SmB$_6$, yet also crucial differences. Small heavy Fermi sections are observed in YbB$_{12}$ with similarities to the neighbouring heavy fermion semimetallic Fermi surface, in contrast to large light Fermi surface sections in SmB$_6$ which are more si…
The new Kondo material YbIr$_3$Si$_7$, similar to other Kondo insulators, has been reported to exhibit charge-neutral fermionic excitations through measurements of specific heat and thermal conductivity at low temperatures. We performed $^{29}$Si-NMR on YbIr$_3$Si$_7$ to investigate the magnetic response of charge-neutral fermions from a microscopic perspective. In low magnetic fields parallel to the $c$ axis, a single NMR peak in the paramagnetic state splits into three peaks below $T_{\rm N}$. In contrast, only a slight shift of the single NMR peak was observed in high magnetic fields. This …
