Finite temperature problems in the strong correlated systems are important but challenging tasks. Minimally entangled typical thermal states (METTS) are a powerful method in the framework of tensor network methods to simulate finite temperature systems, including Fermions and frustrated spins which introduce a sign problem in the typical Monte Carlo methods. In this work, we introduce an extension of the METTS algorithm by using a new basis, the auxiliary matrix product state. This new basis achieves the pre-summation process in the partition function, and thus improve the convergence in the Monte Carlo samplings. The method also has the advantage of simulating the grand canonical ensemble in a computationally efficient way by employing good quantum numbers. We benchmark our method on the spin-$1/2$ XXZ model on the triangular lattice, and show that the new method outperforms the original METTS as well as the purification methods at sufficiently low temperature, the usual range of applications of METTS. The new method also naturally connects the METTS method to the purification method.
Minimally entangled typical thermal states (METTS) are a construction that allows one to to solve for the imaginary time evolution of quantum many body systems. By using wave functions that are weakly entangled, one can take advantage of efficient representations in the form of matrix product states. We generalize these ideas to arbitrary variational wave functions and we focus, as illustration, on the particular case of restricted Boltzmann machines. The imaginary time evolution is carried out using stochastic reconfiguration (natural gradient descent), combined with Monte Carlo sampling. Sin…
We extend finite-temperature tensor network methods to compute Matsubara imaginary-time correlation functions, building on the minimally entangled typical thermal states (METTS) and purification algorithms. While imaginary-time correlation functions are straightforward to formulate with these methods, care is needed to avoid convergence issues that would result from naive estimators. As a benchmark, we study the single-band Anderson impurity model, even though the algorithm is quite general and applies to lattice models. The special structure of the impurity model benchmark system and our choi…
Topological Minimally Entangled States via Geometric Measure
Orus,T. C. Wei,O. Buerschaper,A.

Minimally Entangled Typical Thermal States for Classical and Quantum Simulation of 1+1-Dimensional $\mathbb Z_2$ Lattice Gauge Theory at Finite Temperature and Density
We describe a practical and efficient approach to represent physically realistic long-range interactions in two-dimensional tensor network algorithms via projected entangled-pair operators (PEPOs). We express the long-range interaction as a linear combination of correlation functions of an auxiliary system with only nearest-neighbor interactions. To obtain a smooth and radially isotropic interaction across all length scales, we map the physical lattice to an auxiliary lattice of expanded size. Our construction yields a long-range PEPO as a sum of ancillary PEPOs, each of small, constant bond d…
Variational Monte Carlo studies employing projected entangled-pair states (PEPS) have recently shown that they can provide answers on long-standing questions such as the nature of the phases in the two-dimensional $J_1 - J_2$ model. The sampling in these Monte Carlo algorithms is typically performed with Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithms employing local update rules, which often suffer from long autocorrelation times and interdependent samples. We propose a sampling algorithm that generates independent samples from a PEPS, bypassing all problems related to finite autocorrelation times. This …
Simplex Z_2 spin liquids on the Kagome lattice with Entangled Pair States: spinon and vison coherence lengths, topological entropy and gapless edge modes
We study thermal states of strongly interacting quantum spin chains and prove that those can be represented in terms of convex combinations of matrix product states. Apart from revealing new features of the entanglement structure of Gibbs states our results provide a theoretical justification for the use of White's algorithm of minimally entangled typical thermal states. Furthermore, we shed new light on time dependent matrix product state algorithms which yield hydrodynamical descriptions of the underlying dynamics.
This thesis describes several topics related to finite temperature studies of strongly correlated systems: finite temperature density matrix embedding theory (FT-DMET), finite temperature metal-insulator transition, and quantum algorithms including quantum imaginary time evolution (QITE), quantum Lanczos (QLanczos), and quantum minimally entangled typical thermal states (QMETTS) algorithms. While the absolute zero temperature is not reachable, studies of physical and chemical problems at finite temperatures, especially at low temperature, is essential for understanding the quantum behaviors of…
Method of random phase product state (RPPS) is proposed to calculate canonical ensemble average of quantum systems described with matrix product states and also with tensor network states in general. The RPPS method is an extension of the method of random phase state for full Hilbert space representation. The validity of the method is confirmed by comparing the average energy of N-site antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain model with open boundary conditions with the result of direct method (for up to N=14) and minimally entangled typical thermal state (METTS) method (for N=100).
