Physical systems made of many interacting quantum particles can often be described by Euler hydrodynamic equations in the limit of long wavelengths and low frequencies. Recently such a classical hydrodynamic framework, now dubbed Generalized Hydrodynamics (GHD), was found for quantum integrable models in one spatial dimension. Despite its great predictive power, GHD, like any Euler hydrodynamic equation, misses important quantum effects, such as quantum fluctuations leading to non-zero equal-time correlations between fluid cells at different positions. Focusing on the one-dimensional gas of bosons with delta repulsion, and on states of zero entropy, for which quantum fluctuations are larger, we reconstruct such quantum effects by quantizing GHD. The resulting theory of quantum GHD can be viewed as a multi-component Luttinger liquid theory, with a small set of effective parameters that are fixed by the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz. It describes quantum fluctuations of truly nonequilibrium systems where conventional Luttinger liquid theory fails.
We provide a new hydrodynamic framework to describe out-of-equilibrium integrable systems with space-time inhomogeneous interactions. Our result builds up on the recently-introduced Generalized Hydrodynamics (GHD). The method allows to analytically describe the dynamics during generic space-time-dependent smooth modulations of the interactions. As a proof of concept, we study experimentally-motivated interaction quenches in the trapped interacting Bose gas, which cannot be treated with current analytical or numerical methods. We also benchmark our results in the XXZ spin chain and in the class…
We study the generalized hydrodynamics of the one-dimensional classical Non Linear Schroedinger equation in the attractive phase. We thereby show that the thermodynamic limit is entirely captured by solitonic modes and radiation is absent. Our results are derived by considering the semiclassical limit of the quantum Bose gas, where the Planck constant has a key role as a regulator of the classical soliton gas. We use our result to study adiabatic interaction changes from the repulsive to the attractive phase, observing soliton production and obtaining exact analytical results which are in exce…
We consider the generalized hydrodynamics including the recently introduced diffusion term for an initially inhomogeneous state in the Lieb-Liniger model. We construct a general solution to the linearized hydrodynamics equation in terms of the eigenstates of the evolution operator and study two prototypical classes of initial states: delocalized and localized spatially. We exhibit some general features of the resulting dynamics, among them, we highlight the difference between the ballistic and diffusive evolution. The first one governs a spatial scrambling, the second, a scrambling of the quas…
Generalized Hydrodynamics (GHD) has recently been devised as a method to solve the dynamics of integrable quantum many-body systems beyond the mean-field approximation. In its original form, a major limitation is the inability to predict equal-time correlations. Here we present a new method to treat thermal fluctuations of a 1D bosonic degenerate gas within the GHD framework. We show how the standard results using the thermodynmaic Bethe ansatz can be obtained through sampling of collective bosonic excitations, revealing the connection or duality between GHD and effective field theories such a…
We review recent progress in understanding nearly integrable models within the framework of generalized hydrodynamics (GHD). Integrable systems have infinitely many conserved quantities and stable quasiparticle excitations: when integrability is broken, only a few residual conserved quantities survive, eventually leading to thermalization, chaotic dynamics and conventional hydrodynamics. In this review, we summarize recent efforts to take into account small integrability breaking terms, and describe the transition from GHD to standard hydrodynamics. We discuss the current state of the art, wit…
We revisit early suggestions to observe spin-charge separation (SCS) in cold-atom settings {in the time domain} by studying one-dimensional repulsive Fermi gases in a harmonic potential, where pulse perturbations are initially created at the center of the trap. We analyze the subsequent evolution using generalized hydrodynamics (GHD), which provides an exact description, at large space-time scales, for arbitrary temperature $T$, particle density, and interactions. At $T=0$ and vanishing magnetic field, we find that, after a nontrivial transient regime, spin and charge dynamically decouple up t…
In an effort to address integrability breaking in cold gas experiments, we extend the integrable hydrodynamics of the 1d Lieb-Liniger model with two additional components representing the population of atoms in the first and second transverse excited states, thus enabling a description of quasi-1d condensates. Collisions between different components are accounted for through the inclusion of a Boltzmann-type collision integral in the hydrodynamic equation. Contrary to standard generalized hydrodynamics, our extended model captures thermalization of the condensate at a rate consistent with expe…
We give a pedagogical introduction to the Generalized Hydrodynamic approach to inhomogeneous quenches in integrable many-body quantum systems. We review recent applications of the theory, focusing in particular on two classes of problems: bipartitioning protocols and trap quenches, which represent two prototypical examples of broken translational symmetry in either the system initial state or post-quench Hamiltonian. We report on exact results that have been obtained for generic time-dependent correlation functions and entanglement evolution, and discuss in detail the range of applicability of…
We describe the crossover from generalized hydrodynamics to conventional hydrodynamics in nearly integrable systems. Integrable systems have infinitely many conserved quantities, which spread ballistically in general. When integrability is broken, only a few of these conserved quantities survive. The remaining conserved quantities are generically transported diffusively; we derive a compact and general diffusion equation for these. The diffusion constant depends on the matrix elements of the integrability-breaking perturbation; for a certain class of integrability-breaking perturbations, inclu…
We develop a general kinetic theory framework to describe the hydrodynamics of strongly interacting, nonequilibrium quantum systems in which integrability is weakly broken, leaving a few residual conserved quantities. This framework is based on a generalized relaxation-time approximation; it gives a simple, but surprisingly accurate, prescription for computing nonequilibrium transport even in strongly interacting systems. This approximation reproduces the crossover from generalized to conventional hydrodynamics in interacting one-dimensional Bose gases with integrability-breaking perturbations…
We investigate the steady-state Rényi entanglement entropies after a quench from a piecewise homogeneous initial state in integrable models. In the quench protocol two macroscopically different chains (leads) are joined together at the initial time, and the subsequent dynamics is studied. We study the entropies of a finite subsystem at the interface between the two leads. The density of Rényi entropies coincides with that of the entropies of the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE) that describes the interface between the chains. By combining the Generalized Hydrodynamics (GHD) treatment of the qu…
We apply the theory of Quantum Generalized Hydrodynamics (QGHD) introduced in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 140603 (2020)] to derive asymptotically exact results for the density fluctuations and the entanglement entropy of a one-dimensional trapped Bose gas in the Tonks-Girardeau (TG) or hard-core limit, after a trap quench from a double well to a single well. On the analytical side, the quadratic nature of the theory of QGHD is complemented with the emerging conformal invariance at the TG point to fix the universal part of those quantities. Moreover, the well-known mapping of hard-core bosons to fre…
The emergence of a special type of fluid-like behavior at large scales in one-dimensional (1d) quantum integrable systems, theoretically predicted in 2016, is established experimentally, by monitoring the time evolution of the in situ density profile of a single 1d cloud of $^{87}{\rm Rb}$ atoms trapped on an atom chip after a quench of the longitudinal trapping potential. The theory can be viewed as a dynamical extension of the thermodynamics of Yang and Yang, and applies to the whole range of repulsion strength and temperature of the gas. The measurements, performed on weakly interacting ato…
We review the recent theoretical and experimental progress regarding the Generalized Hydrodynamics (GHD) behavior of the one-dimensional Bose gas with contact repulsive interactions, also known as the Lieb-Liniger gas. In the first section, we review the theory of the Lieb-Liniger gas, introducing the key notions of the rapidities and of the rapidity distribution. The latter characterizes the Lieb-Liniger gas after relaxation and is at the heart of GHD. We also present the asymptotic regimes of the Lieb-Liniger gas with their dedicated approximate descriptions. In the second section we enter t…
The dynamics of strongly interacting many-body quantum systems are notoriously complex and difficult to simulate. A new theory, generalized hydrodynamics (GHD), promises to efficiently accomplish such simulations for nearly-integrable systems. It predicts the evolution of the distribution of rapidities, which are the momenta of the quasiparticles in integrable systems. GHD was recently tested experimentally for weakly interacting atoms, but its applicability to strongly interacting systems has not been experimentally established. Here we test GHD with bundles of one-dimensional (1D) Bose gases…
We extend beyond the Euler scales the hydrodynamic theory for quantum and classical integrable models developed in recent years, accounting for diffusive dynamics and local entropy production. We review how the diffusive scale can be reached via a gradient expansion of the expectation values of the conserved fields and how the coefficients of the expansion can be computed via integrated steady-state two-point correlation functions, emphasising that PT-symmetry can fully fix the inherent ambiguity in the definition of conserved fields at the diffusive scale. We develop a form factor expansion t…
The semiclassical approach introduced by Sachdev and collaborators proved to be extremely successful in the study of quantum quenches in massive field theories, both in homogeneous and inhomogeneous settings. While conceptually very simple, this method allows one to obtain analytic predictions for several observables when the density of excitations produced by the quench is small. At the same time, a novel generalized hydrodynamic (GHD) approach, which captures exactly many asymptotic features of the integrable dynamics, has recently been introduced. Interestingly, also this theory has a natur…

For the quantum kinetic system modelling the Bose-Einstein Condensate that accounts for interactions between condensate and excited atoms, we use the Chapman-Enskog expansion to derive its hydrodynamic approximations, include both Euler and Navier-Stokes approximations. The hydrodynamic approximations describe not only the macroscopic behavior of the BEC but also its coupling with the non-condensates, which agrees with Landau's two fluid theory.
Hydrodynamic theories offer successful approaches that are capable of simulating the otherwise difficult-to-compute dynamics of quantum many-body systems. In this work we derive, within the positive-P phase-space formalism, a new stochastic hydrodynamic method for the description of interacting Bose gases. It goes beyond existing hydrodynamic approaches, such as superfluid hydrodynamics or generalized hydrodynamics, in its capacity to simulate the full quantum dynamics of these systems: it possesses the ability to compute non-equilibrium quantum correlations, even for short-wavelength phenomen…
