In an effort to address integrability breaking in cold gas experiments, we extend the integrable hydrodynamics of the 1d Lieb-Liniger model with two additional components representing the population of atoms in the first and second transverse excited states, thus enabling a description of quasi-1d condensates. Collisions between different components are accounted for through the inclusion of a Boltzmann-type collision integral in the hydrodynamic equation. Contrary to standard generalized hydrodynamics, our extended model captures thermalization of the condensate at a rate consistent with experimental observations from a quantum Newton's cradle setup.
In the first part of this chapter we analyze the contact intensity $C$, which has been introduced by Tan [Ann. Phys. 323, 2952 (2008)] and appears in several physical observables of the strongly correlated two-component Fermi gas. We calculate the contact $C$ in the full BCS-BEC crossover for a uniform superfluid Fermi gas by using an efficient parametetrization of the ground-state energy. In the case of harmonic confinement, within the Thomas-Fermi approximation, we derive analytical formulas of $C$ in the three relevant limits of the crossover. In the second part of this chapter we discuss t…
We study mass and population imbalance effect on density (in-phase) and spin (out-of-phase) collective modes in a two-component normal Fermi gas. By calculating eigenmodes of the linearized Boltzmann equation as well as the density/spin dynamic structure factor, we show that mass and population imbalance effects offer a variety of collective mode crossover behaviors from collisionless to hydrodynamic regimes. The mass imbalance effect shifts the crossover regime to the higher-temperature, and a significant peak of the spin dynamic structure factor emerges only in the collisionless regime. This…
We discuss the derivation of a low-energy effective field theory of phase (Goldstone) and amplitude (Higgs) modes of the pairing field from a microscopic theory of attractive fermions. The coupled equations for Goldstone and Higgs fields are critically analyzed in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) to Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) crossover both in three spatial dimensions and in two spatial dimensions. The crucial role of pair fluctuations is investigated, and the beyond-mean-field Gaussian theory of the BCS-BEC crossover is compared with available experimental data of the two-dimensional u…
The dynamic structure factor of a normal Fermi gas is investigated by using the moment method for the Boltzmann equation. We determine the spectral function at finite temperatures over the full range of crossover from the collisionless regime to the hydrodynamic regime. We find that the Brillouin peak in the dynamic structure factor exhibits a smooth crossover from zero to first sound as functions of temperature and interaction strength. The dynamic structure factor obtained using the moment method also exhibits a definite Rayleigh peak ($/omega /sim 0$), which is a characteristic of the hydro…
We solve the Leggett equations for the BCS - BEC crossover in the three dimension resonance p-wave superfluid with the symmetry of the A1 - phase. We calculate the sound velocity, the normal density, and the specific heat for the BCS-domain (μ> 0), BEC-domain (μ< 0), and close to important point μ= 0 in 100% polarized case. We find the indications of quantum phase - transition close to the point μ(T = 0) = 0. Deep in the BCS and BEC-domains the crossover ideas of Leggett and Nozieres, Schmitt-Rink work pretty well. We discuss the spectrum of orbital waves, the paradox of intrinsic angular mome…
Dipole oscillation is studied in a normal phase of a trapped Bose--Fermi-mixture gas composed of single-species bosons and single-species fermions. Applying the moment method to the linearized Boltzmann equation, we derive a closed set of equations of motion for the center-of-mass position and momentum of both components. By solving the coupled equations, we reveal the behavior of dipole modes in the transition between the collisionless regime and the hydrodynamic regime. We find that two oscillating modes in the collisionless regime have distinct fates in the hydrodynamic regime: one collisio…
The surface quadrupole mode of an harmonically trapped dipolar Fermi gas is studied in both the hydrodynamic and collisionless regimes. The anisotropy and long range effects of the dipolar force as well as the role of the trapping geometry are explicitly investigated. In the hydrodynamic regime the frequency is always slightly smaller than the $\sqrt{2}ω_\perp$ value holding for gases interacting with contact interactions. In the collisionless regime the frequency can be either pretty smaller or larger than the non-interacting value $2ω_\perp$, depending on the cloud aspect ratio. Our results …
We describe the crossover from generalized hydrodynamics to conventional hydrodynamics in nearly integrable systems. Integrable systems have infinitely many conserved quantities, which spread ballistically in general. When integrability is broken, only a few of these conserved quantities survive. The remaining conserved quantities are generically transported diffusively; we derive a compact and general diffusion equation for these. The diffusion constant depends on the matrix elements of the integrability-breaking perturbation; for a certain class of integrability-breaking perturbations, inclu…

We theoretically study the instability of helical shear flows, in which one fluid component flows along the vortex core of the other, in phase-separated two-component Bose-Einstein condensates at zero temperature. The helical shear flows are hydrodynamically classified into two regimes: (1) a helical vortex sheet, where the vorticity is localized on the cylindrical interface and the stability is described by an effective theory for ripple modes, and (2) a core-flow vortex with the vorticity distributed in the vicinity of the vortex core, where the instability phenomena are dominated only by th…
Motivated by the fact that two-component confined fermionic gases in Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-Bose-Einstein condensate (BCS-BEC) crossover can be described through an hydrodynamical approach, we study these systems - both in the cigar-shaped configuration and in the disk-shaped one - by using a polytropic Lagrangian density. We start from the Popov Lagrangian density and obtain, after a dimensional reduction process, the equations that control the dynamics of such systems. By solving these equations we study the sound velocity as a function of the density by analyzing how the dimensionality a…
The crossover between low and high density regimes of exciton-polariton condensates is examined using a BCS wavefunction approach. Our approach is an extension of the BEC-BCS crossover theory for excitons, but includes a cavity photon field. The approach can describe both the low density limit, where the system can be described as a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of exciton-polaritons, and the high density limit, where the system enters a photon dominated regime. In contrast to the exciton BEC-BCS crossover where the system approaches an electron-hole plasma, the polariton high density limit h…
We develop a finite-temperature hydrodynamic approach for a harmonically trapped one-dimensional quasicondensate and apply it to describe the phenomenon of frequency doubling in the breathing-mode oscillations of its momentum distribution. The doubling here refers to the oscillation frequency relative to the oscillations of the real-space density distribution, invoked by a sudden confinement quench. We find that the frequency doubling is governed by the quench strength and the initial temperature, rather than by the crossover from the ideal Bose gas to the quasicondensate regime. The hydrodyna…
We develop a general kinetic theory framework to describe the hydrodynamics of strongly interacting, nonequilibrium quantum systems in which integrability is weakly broken, leaving a few residual conserved quantities. This framework is based on a generalized relaxation-time approximation; it gives a simple, but surprisingly accurate, prescription for computing nonequilibrium transport even in strongly interacting systems. This approximation reproduces the crossover from generalized to conventional hydrodynamics in interacting one-dimensional Bose gases with integrability-breaking perturbations…

We use tools from integrability and generalized hydrodynamics to study finite-temperature dynamics in the one-dimensional Hubbard model. First, we examine charge, spin, and energy transport away from half-filling and zero magnetization, focusing on the strong coupling regime where we identify a rich interplay of temperature and energy scales, with crossovers between distinct dynamical regimes. We identify an intermediate-temperature regime analogous to the spin-incoherent Luttinger liquid, where spin degrees of freedom are hot but charge degrees of freedom are at low temperature. We demonstrat…
The emergence of a special type of fluid-like behavior at large scales in one-dimensional (1d) quantum integrable systems, theoretically predicted in 2016, is established experimentally, by monitoring the time evolution of the in situ density profile of a single 1d cloud of $^{87}{\rm Rb}$ atoms trapped on an atom chip after a quench of the longitudinal trapping potential. The theory can be viewed as a dynamical extension of the thermodynamics of Yang and Yang, and applies to the whole range of repulsion strength and temperature of the gas. The measurements, performed on weakly interacting ato…
