A linear section of a double vector bundle is a parallel pair of sections which form a vector bundle morphism; examples include the complete lifts of vector fields to tangent bundles and the horizontal lifts arising from a connection in a vector bundle. A grid in a double vector bundle consists of two linear sections, one in each structure, and thus provides two paths from the base manifold to the top space; the warp of the grid measures the lack of commutativity of the two paths.
For a double vector bundle $D$, a linear section induces a linear map on the relevant dual of $D$ and thence a linear section of the iterated dual; we call this the corresponding squarecap section. This notion makes precise the relationships between various standard $1$-forms and vector fields that are not dual in the usual sense. A grid in $D$ induces squarecap sections in the two iterated duals. These iterated duals are themselves in duality and we obtain an expression for the warp of a grid in terms of a pairing. This result extends the relationships between various standard formulas, and clarifies the iterated dualization involved in the concept of double Lie algebroid.
In the first part of the paper we review the nonstandard pairing of the two duals of a double vector bundle, showing in particular that it arises as a direct generalization of the Legendre-type antisymplectomorphism $T^*(A^*)\to T^*(A)$ for any vector bundle $A$ of Mackenzie and Xu.
A triple vector bundle is a cube of vector bundle structures which commute in the (strict) categorical sense. A grid in a triple vector bundle is a collection of sections of each bundle structure with certain linearity properties. A grid provides two routes around each face of the triple vector bundle, and six routes from the base manifold to the total manifold, the warps measure the lack of commutativity of these routes. In this paper we first prove that the sum of the warps in a triple vector bundle is zero. The proof we give is intrinsic and, we believe, clearer than the proof using decompo…
We discuss some aspects of index and secondary index theory for flat bundles with duality. This theory was first developed by J. Lott. Our main purpose in the present paper is to provide a modification with better functorial properties.
In general terms, Gelfand duality refers to a correspondence between a geometric, topological, or analytical category, and an algebraic category. For example, in smooth differential geometry, Gelfand duality refers to the topological embedding of a smooth manifold in the topological dual of its algebra of smooth functions. This is generalised here in two directions. First, the topological embeddings for manifolds are generalised to the cases of real analytic and Stein manifolds, using a unified cohomological argument. Second, this type of duality is extended to vector bundles, affine bundles, …
Supplementary comments about generalized Lie algebroids are presented and a new point of view over the construction of the Lie algebroid generalized tangent bundle of a (dual) vector bundle is introduced. Using the general theory of exterior differential calculus for generalized Lie algebroids, a covariant derivative for exterior forms of a (dual) vector bundle is introduced. Using this covariant derivative, the complete lift of an arbitrary section of a (dual) vector bundle is discovered. A theory of Legendre type and Legendre duality between vertical and complete lifts is presented. Finally,…
This paper is a step towards realizing T-duality and Hori formulae for loop spaces. Here we prove T-duality and Hori formulae for winding q-loop spaces, which are infinite dimensional subspaces of loop spaces.
The most important examples of a double vector bundle are provided by iterated tangent and cotangent functors: TTM, TT^*M, T^*TM, and T^*T^*M. We introduce the notions of the dual double vector bundle and the dual double vector bundle morphism. Theorems on canonical isomorphisms are formulated and proved. Several examples are given.
We use the mapping cone for the relative deRham cohomology of a manifold with boundary in order to show that the Chern-Gauss-Bonnet Theorem for oriented Riemannian vector bundles over such manifolds is a manifestation of Lefschetz Duality in any of the two embodiments of the latter. We explain how Thom isomorphism fits into this picture, complementing thus the classical results about Thom forms with compact support. When the rank is odd, we construct, by using secondary transgression forms introduced here, a new closed pair of forms on the disk bundle associated to a vector bundle, pair which …
Recently we initiated the study of spherical T-duality for spacetimes that are principal SU(2)-bundles. In this paper, we extend spherical T-duality to spacetimes that are oriented non-principal SU(2)-bundles. There are several interesting new examples in this case and a new phenomenon appearing in the non-principal case is the existence of infinitely many spherical T-duals.
We extend topological T-duality to the case of general circle bundles. In this setting we prove existence and uniqueness of T-duals. We then show that T-dual spaces have isomorphic twisted cohomology, twisted $K$-theory and Courant algebroids. A novel feature is that we must consider two kinds of twists in de Rham cohomology and $K$-theory, namely by degree 3 integral classes and a less familiar kind of twist using real line bundles. We give some examples of T-dual non-oriented circle bundles and calculate their twisted $K$-theory.
We find a remarkable family of $\mathrm{G}_2$ structures defined on certain principal $\mathrm{SO}(3)$-bundles $P_\pm\longrightarrow M$ associated with any given oriented Riemannian 4-manifold $M$. Such structures are always cocalibrated. The study starts with a recast of the Singer-Thorpe equations of 4-dimensional geometry. These are applied to the Bryant-Salamon cons\-truction of complete $\mathrm{G}_2$-holonomy metrics on the vector bundle of self- or anti-self-dual 2-forms on $M$. We then discover new examples of that special holonomy on disk bundles over ${\cal H}^4$ and ${\cal H}^2_{\ma…
Given a compact Riemann surface $X$ and a complex reductive Lie group $G$ equipped with real structures, we define antiholomorphic involutions on the moduli space of $G$-Higgs bundles over $X$. We investigate how the various components of the fixed point locus match up, as one passes from $G$ to its Langlands dual $^LG$. Special attention is given to the case $G=SL(2,\C)$ and $^LG=PGL(2,\C)$.
We give a simplified definition of topological T-duality that applies to arbitrary torus bundles. The new definition does not involve Chern classes or spectral sequences, only gerbes and morphisms between them. All the familiar topological conditions for T-duals are shown to follow. We determine necessary and sufficient conditions for existence of a T-dual in the case of affine torus bundles. This is general enough to include all principal torus bundles as well as torus bundles with arbitrary monodromy representations. We show that isomorphisms in twisted cohomology, twisted K-theory and of Co…
We prove a gluing theorem for solutions of Hitchin's self-duality equations with logarithmic singularities on a rank-2 vector bundle over a noded Riemann surface representing a boundary point of Teichmüller moduli space.
We calculate the group of dualization operations for triple vector bundles, showing that it has order 96 and not 72 as given in Mackenzie's original treatment. The group is a nonsplit extension of S4 by the Klein group. Dualization operations are interpreted as functors on appropriate categories and are said to be equal if they are naturally isomorphic. The method set out here will be applied in a subsequent paper to the case of n-fold vector bundles.
We study the notion of duality in the context of graded manifolds. For graded bundles, somehow like in the case of Gelfand representation and the duality: points vs. functions, we obtain natural dual objects which belongs to a different category than the initial ones, namely graded polynomial (co)algebra bundles and free graded Weil (co)algebra bundles. Our results are then applied to obtain elegant characterizations of double vector bundles and graded bundles of degree 2. All these results have their supergeometric counterparts. For instance, we give a simple proof of a nice characterisation …
Double vector bundles may be dualized in two distinct ways and these duals are themselves dual. These two dualizations generate a group, denoted $\mathscr{D}\mathscr{F}_2$, which is the symmetric group $S_3$ on three symbols. In the case of triple vector bundles the authors proved in a previous paper that the corresponding group $\mathscr{D}\mathscr{F}_3$ is an extension of $S_4$ by the Klein four-group. In this paper we show that the group $\mathscr{D}\mathscr{F}_n$, for $n$-fold vector bundles, $n\geq 3$, is an extension of $S_{n+1}$ by a certain product of groups of order 2, and show that t…
In this paper, we construct a category of short exact sequences of vector bundles and prove that it is equivalent to the category of double vector bundles. Moreover, operations on double vector bundles can be transferred to operations on the corresponding short exact sequences. In particular, we study the duality theory of double vector bundles in term of the corresponding short exact sequences. Examples including the jet bundle and the Atiyah algebroid are discussed.
We consider topological T-duality of torus bundles equipped with S^{1}-gerbes. We show how a geometry on the gerbe determines a reduction of its band to the subsheaf of S^{1}-valued functions which are constant along the torus fibres. We observe that such a reduction is exactly the additional datum needed for the construction of a T-dual pair. We illustrate the theory by working out the example of the canonical lifting gerbe on a compact Lie group which is a torus bundles over the associated flag manifold. It was a recent observation of Daenzer and van Erp (arXiv1211.0763) that for certain com…
We give the global mathematical formulation of a class of generalized four-dimensional theories of gravity coupled to scalar matter and to Abelian gauge fields. In such theories, the scalar fields are described by a section of a surjective pseudo-Riemannian submersion $π$ over space-time, whose total space carries a Lorentzian metric making the fibers into totally-geodesic connected Riemannian submanifolds. In particular, $π$ is a fiber bundle endowed with a complete Ehresmann connection whose transport acts through isometries between the fibers. In turn, the Abelian gauge fields are "twisted"…
In earlier papers, we introduced spherical T-duality, which relates pairs of the form $(P,H)$ consisting of an oriented $S^3$-bundle $P\rightarrow M$ and a 7-cocycle $H$ on $P$ called the 7-flux. Intuitively, the spherical T-dual is another such pair $(\hat P, \hat H)$ and spherical T-duality exchanges the 7-flux with the Euler class, upon fixing the Pontryagin class and the second Stiefel-Whitney class. Unless $\mathrm{dim}(M)\leq 4$, not all pairs admit spherical T-duals and the spherical T-duals are not always unique. In this paper, we define a canonical Poincaré virtual line bundle $\mathc…
We study dg-manifolds which are R[2]-bundles over R[1]-bundles over manifolds, we calculate its symmetries, its derived symmetries and we introduce the concept of T-dual dg-manifolds. Within this framework we construct the T-duality map as a degree -1 map between the cohomologies of the T-dual dg-manifolds and we show an explicit isomorphism between the differential graded algebra of the symmetries of the T-dual dg-manifolds. We furthermore show how the algebraic structure underlying B_n generalized geometry could be recovered as derived dg-Leibniz algebra of the fixed points of the T-dual aut…
In this paper, we extend the T-duality Hori maps in [arXiv:hep-th/0306062], inducing isomorphisms of twisted cohomologies on T-dual circle bundles, to graded Hori maps and show that they induce isomorphisms of two-variable series of twisted cohomologies on the T-dual circle bundles, preserving Jacobi form properties. The composition of the graded Hori map with its dual equals the Euler operator. We also construct Witten gerbe modules arising from gerbe modules and show that their graded twisted Chern characters are Jacobi forms under an anomaly vanishing condition on gerbe modules, thereby giv…
T-duality acts on circle bundles by exchanging the first Chern class with the fiberwise integral of the H-flux, as we motivate using E_8 and also using S-duality. We present known and new examples including NS5-branes, nilmanifolds, Lens spaces, both circle bundles over RP^n, and the AdS^5 x S^5 to AdS^5 x CP^2 x S^1 with background H-flux of Duff, Lu and Pope. When T-duality leads to M-theory on a non-spin manifold the gravitino partition function continues to exist due to the background flux, however the known quantization condition for G_4 fails. In a more general context, we use correspond…
