Zero-Shot Learning (ZSL) is a classification task where we do not have even a single training labeled example from a set of unseen classes. Instead, we only have prior information (or description) about seen and unseen classes, often in the form of physically realizable or descriptive attributes. Lack of any single training example from a set of classes prohibits use of standard classification techniques and losses, including the popular crossentropy loss. Currently, state-of-the-art approaches encode the prior class information into dense vectors and optimize some distance between the learned projections of the input vector and the corresponding class vector (collectively known as embedding models). In this paper, we propose a novel architecture of casting zero-shot learning as a standard neural-network with crossentropy loss. During training our approach performs soft-labeling by combining the observed training data for the seen classes with the similarity information from the attributes for which we have no training data or unseen classes. To the best of our knowledge, such similarity based soft-labeling is not explored in the field of deep learning. We evaluate the proposed model on the four benchmark datasets for zero-shot learning, AwA, aPY, SUN and CUB datasets, and show that our model achieves significant improvement over the state-of-the-art methods in Generalized-ZSL and ZSL settings on all of these datasets consistently.

We introduce SDM-NET, a deep generative neural network which produces structured deformable meshes. Specifically, the network is trained to generate a spatial arrangement of closed, deformable mesh parts, which respect the global part structure of a shape collection, e.g., chairs, airplanes, etc. Our key observation is that while the overall structure of a 3D shape can be complex, the shape can usually be decomposed into a set of parts, each homeomorphic to a box, and the finer-scale geometry of the part can be recovered by deforming the box. The architecture of SDM-NET is that of a two-level …
In this paper we improve the image embeddings generated in the graph neural network solution for few shot learning. We propose alternate architectures for existing networks such as Inception-Net, U-Net, Attention U-Net, and Squeeze-Net to generate embeddings and increase the accuracy of the models. We improve the quality of embeddings created at the cost of the time taken to generate them. The proposed implementations outperform the existing state of the art methods for 1-shot and 5-shot learning on the Omniglot dataset. The experiments involved a testing set and training set which had no comm…
We present generalized versions of the commonly used maximum pooling operation: $k$th maximum and sorted pooling operations which selects the $k$th largest response in each pooling region, selecting locally consistent features of the input images. This method is able to increase the generalization power of a network and can be used to decrease training time and error rate of networks and it can significantly improve accuracy in case of training scenarios where the amount of available data is limited, like one-shot learning scenarios

Deep learning has been widely used in data-intensive applications. However, training a deep neural network often requires a large data set. When there is not enough data available for training, the performance of deep learning models is even worse than that of shallow networks. It has been proved that few-shot learning can generalize to new tasks with few training samples. Fine-tuning of a deep model is simple and effective few-shot learning method. However, how to fine-tune deep learning models (fine-tune convolution layer or BN layer?) still lack deep investigation. Hence, we study how to fi…
The algorithms of one-shot neural architecture search(NAS) have been widely used to reduce computation consumption. However, because of the interference among the subnets in which weights are shared, the subnets inherited from these super-net trained by those algorithms have poor consistency in precision ranking. To address this problem, we propose a step-by-step training super-net scheme from one-shot NAS to few-shot NAS. In the training scheme, we firstly train super-net in a one-shot way, and then we disentangle the weights of super-net by splitting them into multi-subnets and training them…
In this paper we propose a novel Temporal Attentive Relation Network (TARN) for the problems of few-shot and zero-shot action recognition. At the heart of our network is a meta-learning approach that learns to compare representations of variable temporal length, that is, either two videos of different length (in the case of few-shot action recognition) or a video and a semantic representation such as word vector (in the case of zero-shot action recognition). By contrast to other works in few-shot and zero-shot action recognition, we a) utilise attention mechanisms so as to perform temporal ali…
We propose a novel method for training a conditional generative adversarial network (CGAN) without the use of training data, called zero-shot learning of a CGAN (ZS-CGAN). Zero-shot learning of a conditional generator only needs a pre-trained discriminative (classification) model and does not need any training data. In particular, the conditional generator is trained to produce labeled synthetic samples whose characteristics mimic the original training data by using the statistics stored in the batch normalization layers of the pre-trained model. We show the usefulness of ZS-CGAN in data-free …

Recent studies indicate that deep learning plays a crucial role in the automated visual inspection of road infrastructures. However, current learning schemes are static, implying no dynamic adaptation to users' feedback. To address this drawback, we present a few-shot learning paradigm for the automated segmentation of road cracks, which is based on a U-Net architecture with recurrent residual and attention modules (R2AU-Net). The retraining strategy dynamically fine-tunes the weights of the U-Net as a few new rectified samples are being fed into the classifier. Extensive experiments show that…
Few-shot learning aims to classify unseen classes with a few training examples. While recent works have shown that standard mini-batch training with a carefully designed training strategy can improve generalization ability for unseen classes, well-known problems in deep networks such as memorizing training statistics have been less explored for few-shot learning. To tackle this issue, we propose self-augmentation that consolidates self-mix and self-distillation. Specifically, we exploit a regional dropout technique called self-mix, in which a patch of an image is substituted into other values …

Model compression has been widely adopted to obtain light-weighted deep neural networks. Most prevalent methods, however, require fine-tuning with sufficient training data to ensure accuracy, which could be challenged by privacy and security issues. As a compromise between privacy and performance, in this paper we investigate few shot network compression: given few samples per class, how can we effectively compress the network with negligible performance drop? The core challenge of few shot network compression lies in high estimation errors from the original network during inference, since the…

Despite recent advancements in deep learning-based automatic colorization, they are still limited when it comes to few-shot learning. Existing models require a significant amount of training data. To tackle this issue, we present a novel memory-augmented colorization model MemoPainter that can produce high-quality colorization with limited data. In particular, our model is able to capture rare instances and successfully colorize them. We also propose a novel threshold triplet loss that enables unsupervised training of memory networks without the need of class labels. Experiments show that our …
The inevitable feature deviation of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image due to the special imaging principle (depression angle variation) leads to poor recognition accuracy, especially in few-shot learning (FSL). To deal with this problem, we propose a dense graph prototype network (DGP-Net) to eliminate the feature deviation by learning potential features, and classify by learning feature distribution. The role of the prototype in this model is to solve the problem of large distance between congeneric samples taken due to the contingency of single sampling in FSL, and enhance the robustness …
Despite the advancement of supervised image recognition algorithms, their dependence on the availability of labeled data and the rapid expansion of image categories raise the significant challenge of zero-shot learning. Zero-shot learning (ZSL) aims to transfer knowledge from labeled classes into unlabeled classes to reduce human labeling effort. In this paper, we propose a novel progressive ensemble network model with multiple projected label embeddings to address zero-shot image recognition. The ensemble network is built by learning multiple image classification functions with a shared featu…

We present a conceptually simple, flexible, and general framework for few-shot learning, where a classifier must learn to recognise new classes given only few examples from each. Our method, called the Relation Network (RN), is trained end-to-end from scratch. During meta-learning, it learns to learn a deep distance metric to compare a small number of images within episodes, each of which is designed to simulate the few-shot setting. Once trained, a RN is able to classify images of new classes by computing relation scores between query images and the few examples of each new class without furt…

In this paper, we introduce the new ideas of augmenting Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) with Memory and learning to learn the network parameters for the unlabelled images on the fly in one-shot learning. Specifically, we present Memory Matching Networks (MM-Net) --- a novel deep architecture that explores the training procedure, following the philosophy that training and test conditions must match. Technically, MM-Net writes the features of a set of labelled images (support set) into memory and reads from memory when performing inference to holistically leverage the knowledge in the set. …

Recent progress in semantic segmentation is driven by deep Convolutional Neural Networks and large-scale labeled image datasets. However, data labeling for pixel-wise segmentation is tedious and costly. Moreover, a trained model can only make predictions within a set of pre-defined classes. In this paper, we present CANet, a class-agnostic segmentation network that performs few-shot segmentation on new classes with only a few annotated images available. Our network consists of a two-branch dense comparison module which performs multi-level feature comparison between the support image and the q…

Utilizing tensorization and quantization techniques, S3-Net is intended to be lightweight for edge computing. Experiments using CityScapes, UCF11, HMDB51 and MOMENTS datasets demonstrate that the proposed S3-Net achieve…
Although automatic shot transition detection approaches are already investigated for more than two decades, an effective universal human-level model was not proposed yet. Even for common shot transitions like hard cuts or simple gradual changes, the potential diversity of analyzed video contents may still lead to both false hits and false dismissals. Recently, deep learning-based approaches significantly improved the accuracy of shot transition detection using 3D convolutional architectures and artificially created training data. Nevertheless, one hundred percent accuracy is still an unreachab…
In this paper, we present a novel architecture that integrates a deep hashing framework with a neural network decoder (NND) for application to face template protection. It improves upon existing face template protection techniques to provide better matching performance with one-shot and multi-shot enrollment. A key novelty of our proposed architecture is that the framework can also be used with zero-shot enrollment. This implies that our architecture does not need to be re-trained even if a new subject is to be enrolled into the system. The proposed architecture consists of two major component…
Learning good feature embeddings for images often requires substantial training data. As a consequence, in settings where training data is limited (e.g., few-shot and zero-shot learning), we are typically forced to use a generic feature embedding across various tasks. Ideally, we want to construct feature embeddings that are tuned for the given task. In this work, we propose Task-Aware Feature Embedding Networks (TAFE-Nets) to learn how to adapt the image representation to a new task in a meta learning fashion. Our network is composed of a meta learner and a prediction network. Based on a task…
Convolutional neural networks are able to learn realistic image priors from numerous training samples in low-level image generation and restoration. We show that, for high-level image recognition tasks, we can further reconstruct "realistic" images of each category by leveraging intrinsic Batch Normalization (BN) statistics without any training data. Inspired by the popular VAE/GAN methods, we regard the zero-shot optimization process of synthetic images as generative modeling to match the distribution of BN statistics. The generated images serve as a calibration set for the following zero-sho…

Single shot approaches have demonstrated tremendous success on various computer vision tasks. Finding good parameterizations for 6D object pose estimation remains an open challenge. In this work, we propose different novel parameterizations for the output of the neural network for single shot 6D object pose estimation. Our learning-based approach achieves state-of-the-art performance on two public benchmark datasets. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the pose estimates can be used for real-world robotic grasping tasks without additional ICP refinement.
