Entanglement is known to serve as an order parameter for true topological order in two-dimensional systems. We show how entanglement of disconnected partitions defines topological invariants for one-dimensional topological superconductors. These order parameters quantitatively capture the entanglement that is possible to distill from the ground state manifold, and are thus quantized to 0 or log 2. Their robust quantization property is inferred from the underlying lattice gauge theory description of topological superconductors, and is corroborated via exact solutions and numerical simulations. Transitions between topologically trivial and non-trivial phases are accompanied by scaling behavior, a hallmark of genuine order parameters, captured by entanglement critical exponents. These order parameters are experimentally measurable utilizing state-of-the-art techniques.
In this paper we study an s-wave topological SC with a square vortex-lattice. We proposed a topological Majorana lattice model to describe this topological state. We found that the Majorana lattice model is really a "topological SC" on the parent topological SC. Such correspondence between the Majorana lattice model and the topological SC with vortex-lattice is another holographic feature of the topological state. In addition, the numerical calculations confirm our theoretical prediction.
We utilize a 1d Hubbard model to show that the superconductivity in cuprate superconductors likely arises due to the orbital entanglement between holes in the copper oxide plane mediated by orbitally-selective charge hopping. The main role of doping required to achieve superconductivity in cuprates is to suppress the Mott correlations and orbital ordering. The proposed mechanism explains superconductivity in other unconventional superconductors, and provides guidance in the search for new high-temperature superconductors.
The classification of electron systems according to their topology has been at the forefront of condensed matter research in recent years. It has been found that systems of the same symmetry, previously thought of as equivalent, may in fact be distinguished by their topological properties. Moreover, the non-trivial topology found in some insulators and superconductors has profound physical implications that can be observed experimentally and can potentially be used for applications. However, characterizing a system's topology is not always a simple task, even for a theoretical model. When tran…
We analyse the entanglement entropy properties of a two-dimensional p-wave superconductor with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, which displays a rich phase-space that supports non-trivial topological phases, as the chemical potential and the Zeeman term are varied. We show that the entanglement entropy and its derivatives clearly signal the topological transitions and provides a sensible signature of each topological phase. We separately analyse the contributions to the entanglement entropy that are proportional to or independent of the perimeter of the system, as a function of the Hamiltonian coup…
The Cu-doped topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$ has recently been found to undergo a superconducting transition upon cooling, raising the possibilities that it is the first known "topological superconductor" or realizes a novel non-Abelian superconducting state. Its true nature depends critically on the bulk and surface state band topology. We present the first photoemission spectroscopy results where by examining the band topology at many different copper doping values we discover that the topologically protected spin-helical surface states remain well protected and separate from bulk Dirac b…
The topological property of a gapped odd-parity superconductor is jointly determined by its pairing nodes and Fermi surfaces in normal state. We reveal that the contractibility of Fermi surfaces without crossing any time-reversal invariant momentum and the presence of nontrivial Berry phase on Fermi surfaces are two key conditions for the realization of higher-order topological odd-parity superconductors (HOTOPSCs). When the normal state is a normal metal, we reveal the necessity of removable Dirac pairing nodes and provide a general and simple principle to realize HOTOPSCs. Our findings can n…
We demonstrate that in two-dimensional noncentrosymmetric s-wave superconductors under applied magnetic fields for a particular electron density, topological order emerges, and there exists a zero energy Majorana fermion mode in a vortex core, which obeys non-Abelian statistics, in analogy with p_x+ip_y superconductors, the Moore-Read Pfaffian quantum Hall state, and the gapped non-Abelian spin liquid phase of the Kitaev model.
A Green functions approach is used to study superconductivity in nanofilms and nanowires. We show that the superconducting condensate results from the multimodal entanglement, or internal Josephson coupling, of the subcondensates associated with the manifold of Fermi surface subparts resulting from size-quantisation. This entanglement is of critical importance in these systems, since without it superconductivity would be extremely weak, if not completely negligible. Further, the multimodal character of the condensate generally results in multigap superconductivity, with great quantitative cons…
Topological insulators and topological superconductors display various topological phases that are characterized by different Chern numbers or by gapless edge states. In this work we show that various quantum information methods such as the von Neumann entropy, entanglement spectrum, fidelity, and fidelity spectrum may be used to detect and distinguish topological phases and their transitions. As an example we consider a two-dimensional $p$-wave superconductor, with Rashba spin-orbit coupling and a Zeeman term. The nature of the phases and their changes are clarified by the eigenvectors of the…
Recently the influence of antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling has been studied in novel topological superconductors such as half-Heuslers and artificial hetero-structures. We investigate the effect of Rashba and/or Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings on the band structure and topological properties of a two-dimensional noncentrosymetric superconductor. For this goal, the topological helical edge modes are analyzed for different spin-orbit couplings as well as for several superconducting pairing symmetries. To explore the transport properties, we examine the response of the spin-polarized edge state…
The nodal $d_{x^2-y^2}$ superconducting gap is a hallmark of the cuprate high T$_c$ superconductors. Surprisingly recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of deeply underdoped cuprates revealed a nodeless energy gap which is adhered to the Fermi surface. Importantly this phenomenon is observed for compounds across several different cuprate families. In this letter we propose an exciting possibility, namely the fully gapped state is a topological superconductor.
We investigate the behaviors of entanglement entropy in the holographical insulator/superconductor phase transition. We calculate the holographic entanglement entropy for two kinds of geometry configurations in a completely back-reacted gravitational background describing the insulator/superconductor phase transition. The non-monotonic behavior of the entanglement entropy is found in this system. In the belt geometry case, there exist four phases characterized by the chemical potential and belt width.

We investigate the three-dimensional, time-reversal invariant topological superconductors with generic interaction by their response to external fields. The first description is a gravitational topological field theory, which gives a $Z_2$ classification of topological superconductors, and predicts a half-quantized thermal Hall effect on the surface. The second description introduces an s-wave proximity pairing field on the surface, and the associated topological defects give an integer $Z$ classification of the topological superconductors.
Topological superconductors are exotic phases of matter featuring robust surface states that could be leveraged for topological quantum computation. A useful guiding principle for the search of topological superconductors is to relate the topological invariants with the behavior of the pairing order parameter on the normal-state Fermi surfaces. The existing formulas, however, become inadequate for the prediction of the recently proposed classes of topological crystalline superconductors. In this work, we advance the theory of symmetry indicators for topological (crystalline) superconductors to…
We study the entanglement entropy as a probe of the proximity effect of a superconducting system by using the gauge/gravity duality in a fully back-reacted gravity system. While the entanglement entropy in the superconducting phase is less than the entanglement entropy in the normal phase, we find that near the contact interface of the superconducting to normal phase the entanglement entropy has a different behavior due to the leakage of Cooper pairs to the normal phase. We verify this behavior by calculating the conductivity near the boundary interface.
We present a comparative theoretical study of the effects of standard Anderson and magnetic disorders on the topological phases of two-dimensional Rashba spin-orbit coupled superconductors, with the initial state to be either topologically trivial or nontrivial. Using the self-consistent Born approximation approach, we show that the presence of Anderson disorders will drive a topological superconductor into a topologically trivial superconductor in the weak coupling limit. Even more strikingly, a topologically trivial superconductor can be driven into a topological superconductor upon diluted …
The mechanism of the flux-line-lattice (FLL) melting in anisotropic high-T_c superconductors in ${\bf B}\parallel {\bf \hat{c}}$ is clarified by Monte Carlo simulations of the 3D frustrated XY model. The percentage of entangled flux lines abruptly changes at the melting temperature T_m, while no sharp change can be found in the number and size distribution of vortex loops around T_m. Therefore, the origin of this melting transition is the entanglement of flux lines. Scaling behaviors of physical quantities are consistent with the above mechanism of the FLL melting. The Lindemann number is also…
We investigate the behavior of entanglement entropy across the holographic p-wave superconductor phase transition in an Einstein-Yang-Mills theory with a negative cosmological constant. The holographic entanglement entropy is calculated for a strip geometry at AdS boundary. It is found that the entanglement entropy undergoes a dramatic change as we tune the ratio of the gravitational constant to the Yang-Mills coupling, and that the entanglement entropy does behave as the thermal entropy of the background black holes. That is, the entanglement entropy will show the feature of the second order …
This review introduces known candidates for bulk topological superconductors and categorizes them with time-reversal symmetry (TRS) and gap structures. Recent studies on two archetypal topological superconductors, TRS-broken Sr2RuO4 and TRS-preserved CuxBi2Se3, are described in some detail.
The correlations of the electrons field-emitted from a superconductor are fully analyzed, both in space and time. It is proposed that a coincidence experiment would reveal a positive correlation between the electrons emitted in opposite directions. The electrons can be entangled and can even violate Bell's inequality. The crucial role played by Andreev's process is scrutinized, analytical formulas are derived for the correlations, and the physics behind the phenomenon is clarified.
The insertion of a magnetic impurity in a superconductor induces a first order quantum phase transition as the coupling to the electronic spin density increases. As the transition is crossed, a discontinuity is exhibited by various quantities, like the total spin density, the total gap function and the gap function at the impurity location. The location of other quantum phase transitions have been detected by singularities in entanglement measures of the system. In this work we show that the single-site and two-site von Neumann entropies, the mutual information and the Meyer-Wallach measure sh…
In theory of topological classification, the 2D topological superconductors without time reversal symmetry are characterized by Chern numbers. However, in reality, we find the Chern numbers can not reveal the whole properties of the boundary states of the topological superconductors. We figure out some particle-hole symmetry related $\mathbf{Z}_{2}$ invariants, which provide more additional information of the topological superconductors than the Chern numbers provide. With the $\mathbf{Z}_{2}$ invariant, we define weak and strong topological superconductors in 2D systems. Moreover, we explain …
In this letter, we investigate topological phases of full-gapped odd-parity superconductors, which are distinguished by the bulk topological invariants and the topologically protected gapless boundary states. Using the particle-hole symmetry, we introduce Z_2 invariants characterizing topological odd-parity superconductors without or with time-reversal invariance. For odd-parity superconductors, a combination of the inversion and the U(1) gauge symmetry is manifestly preserved, and the combined symmetry enables us to evaluate the Z_2 invariants from the knowledge of the Fermi surface structure…
We predict that junctions between an antiferromagnetic insulator and a superconductor provide a robust platform to create a one-dimensional topological superconducting state. Its emergence does not require the presence of intrinsic spin-orbit coupling nor non-collinear magnetism, but arises solely from repulsive electronic interactions on interfacial solitonic states. We demonstrate that a topological superconducting state is generated by repulsive interactions at arbitrarily small coupling strength, and that the size of the topological gap rapidly saturates to the one of the parent trivial su…
In this paper we study the quantum properties of the lattice vacancy in topological band insulators (TBIs) and topological superconductors (TSCs) on honeycomb lattice with particle-hole symmetry. Each vacancy has one zero mode for the Haldane model and two zero modes for the Kane-Mele model. In addition, in TSCs on honeycomb lattice with particle-hole symmetry, we found the existence of the Majorana zero modes around the vacancies. These zero energy modes are protected by particle-hole symmetry of these topological sates.
Non-Abelian toplogical superconductors are characterized by the existence of {zero-energy} Majorana fermions bound in the quantized vortices. This is a consequence of the nontrivial bulk topology characterized by an {\em odd} Chern number. It is found that in topological semimetals with a single two-bands crossing point all the gapped superconductors are non-Abelian ones. Such a property is generalized to related but more generic systems which will be useful in the search of non-Abelian superconductors and Majorana fermions.
We prove a topological criterion for the existence of zero-energy Majorana bound-state on a disclination, a rotation symmetry breaking point defect, in 4-fold symmetric topological crystalline superconductors (TCS). We first establish a complete topological classification of TCS using the Chern invariant and three integral rotation invariants. By analytically and numerically studying disclinations, we algebraically deduce a Z_2-index that identifies the parity of the number of Majorana zero-modes at a disclination. Surprisingly, we also find weakly-protected Majorana fermions bound at the corn…
Topological insulators/semimetals and unconventional iron-based superconductors have attracted major attentions in condensed matter physics in the past 10 years. However, there is little overlap between these two fields, although the combination of topological states and superconducting states will produce more exotic topologically superconducting states and Majorana bound states (MBS), a promising candidate for realizing topological quantum computations. With the progress in laser-based spin-resolved and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) with very high energy- and momentum-res…
In this paper, we discuss the topological classification of time-reversal invariant topological superconductors. Based on the axion field theory developed in a previous work (Phys. Rev. B ${\bf 87}$ 134519 (2013)), we show how a simple quantum anomaly in vortex-crossing process predicts a $\mathbb{Z}_{16}$ classification of interacting topological superconductors, in consistency with other approaches. We also provide a general definition of the quantum anomaly and a general geometric argument that explains the $\mathbb{Z}_{16}$ on more general grounds. Furthermore, we generalize our approach t…
A weakly biased normal-metal-superconductor junction is considered as a potential device injecting entangled pairs of quasi-particles into a normal-metal lead. The two-particle states arise from Cooper pairs decaying into the normal lead and are characterized by entangled spin- and orbital degrees of freedom. The separation of the entangled quasi-particles is achieved with a fork geometry and normal leads containing spin- or energy-selective filters. Measuring the current-current cross-correlator between the two normal leads allows to probe the efficiency of the entanglement.
Topological superconductors are gapped superconductors with protected Majorana surface/edge states on the boundary. In this paper, we study the Josephson coupling between time-reversal invariant topological superconductors and s-wave superconductors. The Majorana edge/surface states of time-reversal invariant topological superconductors in all physical dimensions 1, 2, 3 have a generic topological property which we named as time-reversal anomaly. Due to the time-reversal anomaly, the Josephson coupling prefers a nonzero phase difference between topological and trivial superconductors. The nont…
Under appropriate circumstances the electrons emitted from a superconducting tip can be entangled. We analyze these nonlocal correlations by studying the coincidences of the field-emitted electrons and show that electrons emitted in opposite directions violate Bell's inequality. We scrutinize the interplay between the bosonic nature of Cooper pairs and the fermionic nature of electrons. We further discuss the feasibility of our analysis in the light of present experimental capabilities.
Topological superconductors are gapped superconductors with gapless and topologically robust quasiparticles propagating on the boundary. In this paper, we present a topological field theory description of three-dimensional time-reversal invariant topological superconductors. In our theory the topological superconductor is characterized by a topological coupling between the electromagnetic field and the superconducting phase fluctuation, which has the same form as the coupling of "axions" with an Abelian gauge field. As a physical consequence of our theory, we predict the level crossing induced…
We propose a minimal lattice model for two-dimensional class DIII superconductors with $C_2$-protected higher-order topology. While this class of superconductors cannot be topologically characterized by symmetry eigenvalues at high symmetry momenta, we propose a simple Wannier-orbital-based real-space diagnosis to unambiguously capture the corresponding higher-order topology. We further identify and characterize a variety of conventional topological phases in our minimal model, including a weak topological superconductor and a nodal topological superconductor with chiral-symmetry protection. T…
This review elaborates pedagogically on the fundamental concept, basic theory, expected properties, and materials realizations of topological superconductors. The relation between topological superconductivity and Majorana fermions are explained, and the difference between dispersive Majorana fermions and a localized Majorana zero mode is emphasized. A variety of routes to topological superconductivity are explained with an emphasis on the roles of spin-orbit coupling. Present experimental situations and possible signatures of topological superconductivity are summarized with an emphasis on in…
The topological invariants of gapped time reversal invariant lattice superconductors are studied by mapping the superconducting mean field Hamiltonian to a Bloch Hamiltonian. There is a single $Z_2 $ invariant in two dimensions and four such invariants in three dimensions. We briefly discuss the properties of states with non-trivial topological invariants.
We find a series of topological phase transitions in a half-metal/superconductor heterostructure, by tuning the direction of the magnetization of the half-metal film. These include transitions between a topological superconducting phase with a bulk gap and another phase without a bulk gap but has a ubiquitous local gap. At the same time, the edge states change from counter-propagating Majorana edge modes to unidirectional Majorana edge modes. In addition, we find transitions between the second phase and a nodal phase which turns out to be a two-dimensional Weyl superconductor with Fermi line e…
The ground state of large Hubbard $U$ limit of a honeycomb lattice near half-filling is known to be a singlet $d+id$-wave superconductor. It is also known that this $d+id$ superconductor exhibits a chiral $p+ip$ pairing locally at the Dirac cone, characterized by a $2\mathbb{Z}$ topological invariant. By constructing a dual transformation, we demonstrate that this $2\mathbb{Z}$ topological superconductor is equivalent to a collection of two topological ferromagnetic insulators. As a result of the duality, the topology of the electronic structures for a $d+id$ superconductor is controllable via…
In the presence of both space and time reversal symmetries, an s-wave A1g superconducting state is usually topologically trivial. Here we demonstrate that an exception can take place in a type of nonsymmorphic lattice structures. We specify the demonstration in a system with a centrosymmetric space group P4/nmm, the symmetry group that governs iron-based superconductors, by showing the existence of a second-order topological state protected by a mirror symmetry. The topological superconductivity is featured by 2Z degenerate Dirac cones on the (1,0) edge, and Z pairs of Majorana modes at the in…
In this work, we show that a giant spin current can be injected into a nodal topological superconductor, using a normal paramagnetic lead, through a large number of zero energy Majorana fermions at the superconductor edge. The giant spin current is caused by the selective equal spin Andreev reflections (SESAR) induced by Majorana fermions. In each SESAR event, a pair of electrons with certain spin polarization are injected into the nodal topological superconductor, even though the pairing in the bulk of the nodal superconductor is spin-singlet s-wave. We further explain the origin of the spin …
A new method is introduced for probing Topological Superconductors. The integration of the superconding fermions generates a topological $\mathbf{Chern-Simons}$ sound action . Dislocations induce Majorana zero modes inside the sample, resulting in a new Hamiltonian which couple the Majorana modes, the electron field and the non-Abelian strain field sound. This Hamiltonian is used to compute the anomalous sound absorption. The Topological superconductor absorbs sound below the superconducting gap due to the transition between the quasi particles and the Majorana fermions. The sound waves offers…
Superconductivity in Dirac electrons has recently been proposed as a new platform between novel concepts in high-energy and condensed matter physics. It has been proposed that supersymmetry and exotic quasiparticles, both of which remain elusive in particle physics, may be realized as emergent particles in superconducting Dirac electron systems. Using artificially fabricated topological insulator-superconductor heterostructures, we present direct spectroscopic evidence for the existence of Cooper pairing in a half Dirac gas 2D topological superconductor. Our studies reveal that superconductivi…
By using the RT formula and the subregion CV conjecture respectively, we numerically investigate the holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) and holographic subregion complexity (HSC) for two holographic d-wave superconducting models with backreactions. We find that both the HEE and HSC can be used as good probes to these two d-wave superconducting phase transitions. The HEE of superconducting phase is always lower than that of the normal phase due to the condensation of degrees of freedom below the critical temperature Tc. However, for the HSC, it behaves differently and interestingly, which d…
We show that time-reversal invariant superconductors in d=2 (d=3) dimensions can support topologically stable Fermi points (lines), characterized by an integer topological charge. Combining this with the momentum space symmetries present, we prove analogs of the fermion doubling theorem: for d=2 lattice models admitting a spin X electron-hole structure, the number of Fermi points is a multiple of four, while for d=3, Fermi lines come in pairs. We show two implications of our findings for topological superconductors in d=3: first, we relate the bulk topological invariant to a topological number…
Majorana zero modes are usually attributed to topological superconductors. We study a class of two-dimensional topologically trivial superconductors without chiral edge modes, which nevertheless host robust Majorana zero modes in topological defects. The construction of this minimal single-band model is facilitated by the Hopf map and the Hopf invariant. This work will stimulate investigations of Majorana zero modes in superconductors in the topologically trivial regime.
The search for topological superconductors which support Majorana fermion excitations has been an important topic in condensed matter physics. In this work, we propose a new experimental scheme for engineering topological superconductors. In this scheme, by manipulating the superlattice structure of organic molecules placed on top of a superconductor with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, topological superconducting phases can be achieved without fine-tuning the chemical potential. Moreover, superconductors with different Chern numbers can be obtained by changing the superlattice structure of the or…
We study topological vortex phases in iron-based superconductors. Besides the previously known vortex end Majorana zero modes (MZMs) phase stemming from the existence of a three dimensional (3D) strong topological insulator state, we show that there is another topologically nontrivial phase as iron-based superconductors can be doped superconducting 3D weak topological insulators (WTIs). The vortex bound states in a superconducting 3D WTI exhibit two different types of quantum states, a robust nodal superconducting phase with pairs of bulk MZMs and a full-gap topologically nontrivial supercondu…
The study of classical spins in topological insulators [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 80}, 115216 (2009)] is generalized to topological superconductors. Based on the characteristic features of the so-called $F$-function, Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian for superconductors is classified to positive, negative, and zero "gap" categories for topologically trivial and nontrivial phases of a topological superconductor as well as a BCS superconductor respectively. It is found that the $F$-function determines directly the presence or absence of localized excited states, induced by bulk classical spins and nonmag…
Although the diamagnetism is of the essence in the superconducting phenomena, small enough topological (or unconventional) superconductors are paramagnetic. By solving the quasiclassical Eilenberger equation and the Maxwell equation self-consistently in two-dimensional disks, we theoretically study the response of small superconductors to weak magnetic field. Because of the topologically nontrivial character of the wave function, the unconventional superconductor hosts the zero-energy surface Andreev bound states which always accompany the odd-frequency Cooper pairs. The paramagnetic property …
Realization of topological superconductors (TSCs) hosting Majorana fermions is a central challenge in condensed-matter physics. One approach is to use the superconducting proximity effect (SPE) in heterostructures, where a topological insulator contacted with a superconductor hosts an effective p-wave pairing by the penetration of Cooper pairs across the interface. However, this approach suffers a difficulty in accessing the topological interface buried deep beneath the surface. Here, we propose an alternative approach to realize topological superconductivity without SPE. In a Pb(111) thin fil…
In this paper, a brief review of the history of topological insulators is given. After that, electronic transport experiments in topological insulator-superconductor hybrid structures, including experimental methods, physical properties and seemingly contradictory observations are discussed. Additionally, some new topological insulator hybrid structures are proposed.
Tunneling conductance spectra of normal metal/insulator/superconductor (N/I/S) junctions are calculated to determine the potential of tunneling spectroscopy in investigations of topological superconductivity. Peculiar feature of topological superconductors is the formation of gapless edge states in them. Since the conductance of N/I/S junctions is sensitive to the formation of these edge states, topological superconductivity can be identified through edge-state detection. Herein, the effects of Fermi surface anisotropy and an applied magnetic field on the conductance spectra are analyzed to ga…
We construct a quasiclassical framework for topological superconductors with the strong spin-orbit coupling such as CuxBi2Se3. In the manner of the quasiclassical treatment, decomposing the slowly varying component from the total quasi-particle wave function, the original massive Dirac Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) Hamiltonian derived from the tight-binding model represented by 8 x 8 matrix is reduced to 4 x 4 one. The resultant equations are equivalent to Andreev-type equations of singlet or triplet superconductors, in which the apparent spin-orbit coupling vanishes. Using this formalism, we fin…
Since the discovery of a new family of vanadium-based kagome superconductor AV3Sb5 (A=K, Rb, and Cs) with topological band structures, extensive effort has been devoted to exploring the origin of superconducting states and the intertwined orders. Meanwhile, searching for new types of superconductors with novel physical properties and higher superconducting transition temperatures has always been a major thread in the history of superconductor research. Here we report a successful fabrication and the topological states of a Titanium-based kagome metal CsTi3Bi5 (CT3B5) crystal. The as-grown CT3B…
A time reversal invariant (TRI) topological superconductor has a full pairing gap in the bulk and topologically protected gapless states on the surface or at the edge. In this paper, we show that in the weak pairing limit, the topological quantum number of a TRI superconductor can be completely determined by the Fermi surface properties, and is independent of the electronic structure away from the Fermi surface. In three dimensions (3D), the integer topological quantum number in a TRI superconductor is determined by the sign of the pairing order parameter and the first Chern number of the Berr…
