A many-body system of charged particles interacting via a pairwise Yukawa potential, the so-called Yukawa One Component Plasma (YOCP) is a good approximation for a variety of physical systems. Such systems are completely characterized by two parameters; the screening parameter, $κ$, and the nominal coupling strength, $Γ$. It is well known that the collective spectrum of the YOCP is governed by a longitudinal acoustic mode, both in the weakly and strongly coupled regimes. In the long-wavelength limit the linear term in the dispersion (\textit{i.e.} $ω= s k$) defines the sound speed $s$. We study the evolution of this latter quantity from the weak through the strong coupling regimes by analyzing the Dynamic Structure Function $S(k,ω)$ in the low frequency domain. Depending on the values of $Γ$ and $κ$ and $w = s/v_{\textrm{th}}$, (\textit{i.e.} the ratio between the phase velocity of the wave and thermal speed of the particles) we identify five domains in the $(κ,Γ)$ parameter space in which the physical behavior of the YOCP exhibits different features. The competing physical processes are the collective Coulomb like vs. binary collision dominated behavior and the individual particle motion vs. quasi-localization. Our principal tool of investigation is Molecular Dynamics (MD) computer simulation from which we obtain $S(k,ω)$. Recent improvements in the simulation technique have allowed us to obtain a large body of high quality data in the range $Γ= \{0.1 - 10,000\}$ and $κ= \{0.5 -5\}$. The theoretical results based on various models are compared in order to see which one provides the most cogent physical description and the best agreement with MD data in the different domains.
The existence of plasma oscillations at multiples of the magnetoplasmon frequency in a strongly coupled two-dimensional magnetized Yukawa plasma is reported, based on extensive molecular dynamics simulations. These modes are the analogues of Bernstein modes which are renormalized by strong interparticle correlations. Their properties are theoretically explained by a dielectric function incorporating the combined effect of a magnetic field, strong correlations and finite temperature.
The ground state of an externally confined one-component Yukawa plasma is derived analytically. In particular, the radial density profile is computed. The results agree very well with computer simulations on three-dimensional spherical Coulomb crystals. We conclude in presenting an exact equation for the density distribution for a confinement potential of arbitrary geometry.
Isomorph theory is employed in order to establish a mapping between the bridge function of Coulomb and Yukawa one-component plasmas. Within an exact invariance ansatz for the bridge functions and by capitalizing on the availability of simulation-extracted Coulomb bridge functions, an analytical Yukawa bridge function is derived which is inserted into the integral theory framework. In spite of its simplicity and computational speed, the proposed integral approach exhibits an excellent agreement with computer simulations of dense Yukawa liquids without invoking adjustable parameters.
One-dimensional and quasi-one-dimensional strongly-coupled dusty plasma rings have been created experimentally. Longitudinal (acoustic) and transverse (optical) dispersion relations for the 1-ring were measured and found to be in very good agreement with the theory for an unbounded straight chain of particles interacting through a Yukawa (i.e., screened Coulomb or Debye-Hückel) potential. These rings provide a new system in which to study one-dimensional and quasi-one-dimensional physics.
Using numerical simulations, we investigate the equilibrium dynamics of a single component fluid with Yukawa interaction potential. We show that, for a wide range of densities and temperatures, the dynamics of the system are in striking agreement with a simple model of generalized hydrodynamics. Since the Yukawa potential can describe the ion-ion interactions in a plasma, the model has significant applicability for both analyzing and interpreting the results of x-ray scattering data from high power lasers and fourth generation light sources.
The ground state of an externally confined one-component Yukawa plasma is derived analytically using the local density approximation (LDA). In particular, the radial density profile is computed. The results are compared with the recently obtained mean-field (MF) density profile \cite{henning.pre06}. While the MF results are more accurate for weak screening, LDA with correlations included yields the proper description for large screening. By comparison with first-principle simulations for three-dimensional spherical Yukawa crystals we demonstrate that both approximations complement each other. …
The results of a recent fluid theory for the multipole modes of a Yukawa plasma in a spherical confinement [H. Kählert and M. Bonitz, Phys. Rev. E \textbf{82}, 036407 (2010)] are compared with molecular dynamics simulations and the exact $N$-particle eigenmodes in the crystalline phase. Simulations confirm the existence of high order modes found in cold fluid theory. We investigate the influence of screening, coupling and friction on the mode spectra in detail. Good agreement between theory and simulation is found for weak to moderate screening and low order modes. The relations between the br…
The normal modes of a three-dimensional Yukawa plasma in an isotropic, harmonic confinement are investigated by solving the linearized cold fluid equations. The eigenmodes are found analytically and expressed in terms of hypergeometric functions. It is found that the mode frequencies solely depend on the dimensionless plasma parameter $ξ=κR$, where $R$ is the plasma radius and $κ$ the inverse screening length. The eigenfrequencies increase monotonically with $ξ$ and saturate in the limit $ξ\to\infty$. Compared with the results in the Coulomb limit~[D. H. E. Dubin, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{66},…
We analyze the Vlasov dispersion relation for Yukawa plasmas in three dimensions for the purpose of identifying coupling parameter domains where the Vlasov approach is justified and the existence of a well-developed RPA type collective excitation is allowed. We establish a rigorous lower bound for the coupling parameter, below which there can be no real solution to the Vlasov dispersion relation. In the coupling domain, where weakly damped solutions do exist, we have focused on the long-wavelength acoustic regime where we establish more restrictive estimates for the lower bound of the coupling…
Diffusion of dust particles is one of the most significant transport processes of strongly coupled dusty plasma that reflect the nature of inter particle interaction and characterize thermodynamics of the system. In this paper the effect of magnetic field on diffusion of dust particles in strongly coupled dusty plasma is investigated by using molecular dynamics simulations. Self- diffusion coefficients of Yukawa systems are obtained for a wide range of plasma parameters and magnetic field strength using Green- Kubo expression which is based on integrated velocity autocorrelation function (VACF…
We have analyzed the Vlasov dispersion relation for Yukawa plasmas in three and two dimensions primarily for the purpose of identifying coupling parameter domains where the existence of well-developed collective excitations is forbidden or allowed. First, we have established a rigorous lower bound for the coupling parameter, below which there can be no real solution to the dispersion relation. In the coupling domain where weakly damped solutions do exist, we have focused on the long-wavelength acoustic regime where we have established more restrictive lower-bound estimates of the coupling para…
We derive an effective coupling parameter for two-dimensional Yukawa systems based on the height of the first maximum of the pair distribution function. Two variants -- one valid in the high-coupling range, the other for arbitrary couplings of the liquid -- are derived. Comparison to previous approaches to Yukawa coupling parameters shows that the present concept is more general and more accurate. Using, in addition, dynamical information contained in the velocity autocorrelation function, we outline a reference data method that can be employed as a non-invasive measurement scheme of the plasm…
We discuss the irreversible free expansion phenomenon for Yukawa gas and obtain the corresponding change in temperature of the gas. In our expansion scheme, the system is not allowed to exchange heat with surroundings during free expansion, therefore, present expansion scheme refers to adiabatic free expansion. Using first principle classical Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation with reflecting boundary conditions, we show that the Yukawa gases exhibits heating effect during the process of adiabatic free expansion. We also obtain the scaling for change in temperature and establish that the chang…
The layered crystal formation in dusty plasma medium depicted by the Yukawa interaction amidst dust has been investigated using Molecular Dynamics simulations. The multilayer structures are shown to form in the presence of a combined gravitational and external electric field force (representing the sheath field in experiments) along the ^ z direction. A detailed study of the dependence of the number of crystal layer formation, their width etc., on various system parameters (viz., the external field profile and the screening length of Yukawa interaction) have been analyzed. The structural prope…
Observations made in dusty plasma experiments suggest that an ensemble of electrically charged solid particles, confined in an elongated trap, develops structural inhomogeneities. With narrowing the trap the particles tend to form layers oriented parallel with the trap walls. In this work we present theoretical and numerical results on the structure of three-dimensional many-particle systems with screened Coulomb (Yukawa) inter-particle interaction in the strongly coupled liquid phase, confined in one-dimensional harmonic trap, forming quasi-2D configurations. Particle density profiles are cal…
In order to give a basis for the structure and correlation analysis of fine particle (dusty) plasma and colloidal suspensions, thermodynamic treatment of mixtures of macroscopic and microscopic charged particles within the adiabatic response of the latter is extended to include the case where the system is finite and weakly inhomogeneous. It is shown that the effective potential for macroscopic particles is composed of two elements: mutual Yukawa repulsion and a confining (attractive) Yukawa potential from their `shadow' (the average charge density of macroscopic particles multiplied by the mi…
Sound velocities in classical single-component fluids with Yukawa (screened Coulomb) interactions are systematically evaluated and analyzed in one-, two-, and three spatial dimensions (${\mathcal D}=1,2,3$). In the strongly coupled regime the convenient sound velocity scale is given by $\sqrt{Q^2/Δm}$, where $Q$ is the particle charge, $m$ is the particle mass, $n$ is the particle density, and $Δ=n^{-1/{\mathcal D}}$ is the unified interparticle distance. The sound velocity can be expressed as a product of this scaling factor and a dimension-dependent function of the screening parameter, $κ=Δ/…
The conventional fluid description of multi-component plasma, supplemented by an appropriate equation of state for the macroparticle component, is used to evaluate the longitudinal sound velocity of Yukawa fluids. The obtained results are in very good agreement with those obtained earlier employing the quasi-localized charge approximation and molecular dynamics simulations in a rather broad parameter regime. Thus, a simple yet accurate tool to estimate the sound velocity across coupling regimes is proposed, which can be particularly helpful in estimating the dust-acoustic velocity in strongly …
Application of the ion sphere model (ISM), well known in the context of the one-component-plasma, to estimate thermodynamic properties of model Yukawa systems is discussed. It is shown that the ISM approximation provides fairly good estimate of the internal energy of the strongly coupled Yukawa systems, in both fluid and solid phases. Simple expressions for the excess pressure and isothermal compressibility are derived, which can be particularly useful in connection to wave phenomena in strongly coupled dusty plasmas. It is also shown that in the regime of strong screening a simple considerati…
A combined theoretical and experimental analysis of the normal modes of three-dimensional spherially confined Yukawa clusters is presented. Particular attention is paid to the breathing mode and the existence of multiple monopole oscillations in Yukawa systems. Finally, the influence of dissipation on the mode spectrum is investigated.
Thermodynamics of weakly screened (near the one-component-plasma limit) Yukawa fluids in two and three dimensions is analyzed in detail. It is shown that the thermal component of the excess internal energy of these fluids, when expressed in terms of the properly normalized coupling strength, exhibits the scaling pertinent to the corresponding one-component-plasma limit (the scalings differ considerably between the two- and three-dimensional situations). This provides us with a simple and accurate practical tool to estimate thermodynamic properties of weakly screened Yukawa fluids. Particular a…
We show that the idea of mapping between the Newtonian and Brownian diffusivities proposed and tested on a class of particle systems interacting via soft and ultra-soft potentials (IPL, Gaussian core, Hertzian, and effective star-polymer) by Pond {\it et al}., [Soft Matter {\bf 7}, 9859 (2011)] is also applicable to the Yukawa (screened Coulomb) interaction. Some of the implications of this result with respect to self-diffusion in strongly coupled complex (dusty) plasmas are discussed.
In a non-ideal classical Coulomb one-component plasma (OCP) all thermodynamic properties are known to depend only on a single parameter -- the coupling parameter $Γ$. In contrast, if the pair interaction is screened by background charges (Yukawa OCP) the thermodynamic state depends, in addition, on the range of the interaction via the screening parameter $κ$. How to determine in this case an effective coupling parameter has been a matter of intensive debate. Here we propose a consistent approach for defining and measuring the coupling strength in Coulomb and Yukawa OCPs based on a fundamental …
We propose a simple two-step approximation for the radial distribution function of a one-component two-dimensional Yukawa fluid. This approximation is specified by the key parameters of the system: coupling parameter and screening parameter. On the basis of this approximation, analytical expressions are obtained for the same thermodynamic quantities as internal energy, internal pressure, excess entropy in the two-particle approximation, and also longitudinal sound velocity. The theoretical results show an agreement with the results obtained in the case of a true radial distribution function.
We consider influence of finite size of ions on properties of classic plasmas. We focus our attention on the ion sound for electron-ion plasmas. We also consider dusty plasmas, where we account finite size of ions and particles of dust and consider the dispersion of dust acoustic waves. Finite size of particles affects classical plasma properties. Finite size of particles gives considerable contribution for small wave lengths, which is area of appearing of quantum effects. Consequently, it is very important to consider finite size of ions in quantum plasmas as well.
Different advanced bridge function closures are utilized to investigate the structural and thermodynamic properties of dense Yukawa one-component plasma liquids within the framework of integral equation theory. The isomorph-based empirically modified hypernetted-chain, the variational modified hypernetted-chain, the Rogers-Young and the Ballone-Pastore-Galli-Gazzillo approaches are compared at the level of thermodynamic properties, radial distribution functions and bridge functions. The comparison, based on accuracy and computational speed, concludes that the two modified hypernetted-chain app…
The evolution of isotropic, nondispersive, inertial wave, emerging from an unsteady initial coherent vortex is studied for strongly correlated Yukawa medium using 2D molecular dynamics simulation. In this study, the effect of azimuthal speed of vortex source, strong correlation, large screening and the compressibility of the medium over the propagation of generated inertial wave have been presented. It has been observed that these inertial waves only exist when the speed of the vortex source (U_0) is larger or equal to the longitudinal sound speed of the system. Estimated speed of the nonlinea…
A kinetic theory for radiation interacting with sound waves in an ultrarelativistic electron-positron plasma is developed. It is shown that the effect of a spatial spectral broadening of the electromagnetic pulse is to introduce a reduction of the growth rates for the decay and modulational instabilities. Such spectral broadening could be due to a finite pulse coherence length, or through the use of random phase filters, and would stabilize the propagation of electromagnetic pulses.
The Alfvenic waves and fast magneto-sound in the relativistically hot plasmas are considered. This study is based on the novel hydrodynamic model of plasmas with the relativistic temperatures consisted of four equations for the material fields: the concentration and the velocity field \emph{and} the average reverse relativistic $γ$ functor and the flux of the reverse relativistic $γ$ functor. Three temperature regimes giving considerably different behavior of the spectrum of Alfvenic waves are found. Four temperature regimes are obtained for the fast magneto-sound. All these regimes show consi…
We investigate in stationary regime on the linear plasma device OMT-2 the methods of plasma heating by electromagnetic waves, interaction of electromagnetic waves with magnetoactive plasma and plasma turbulence and transport processes in the trap. We use ultra-high frequency (UHF) contactless method to fill the open magnetic trap by plasma. We have proposed new method of open magnetic trap filling with plasma. Namely, plasma is injected in the trap along the magnetic field from independent stationary UHF source where plasma is formed in ECR regime. In this paper we present the results of inves…
Recently the occurrence probabilities of ground- and metastable states of three-dimensional Yukawa clusters with 27 and 31 particles have been analyzed in dusty plasma experiments [Block et al., Physics of Plasmas 15, 040701 (2008)]. There it was found that, in many cases, the ground state appeared substantially less frequently than excited states. Here we analyze this question theoretically by means of molecular dynamics (MD) and Monte Carlo simulations and an analytical method based on the canonical partition function. We confirm that metastable states can occur with a significantly higher p…
The Yukawa one-component plasma (OCP) is a paradigm model for describing plasmas that contain one component of interest and one or more other components that can be treated as a neutralizing, screening background. In appropriately scaled units, interactions are characterized entirely by a screening parameter, $κ$. As a result, systems of similar $κ$ show the same dynamics, regardless of the underlying parameters (e.g., density and temperature). We demonstrate this behavior using ultracold neutral plasmas (UNP) created by photoionizing a cold ($T\le10$ mK) gas. The ions in UNP systems are well …
We report the first observation of the Mach cones excited by a larger microparticle (projectile) moving through a cloud of smaller microparticles (dust) in a complex plasma with neon as a buffer gas under microgravity conditions. A collective motion of the dust particles occurs as propagation of the contact discontinuity. The corresponding speed of sound was measured by a special method of the Mach cone visualization. The measurement results are incompatible with the theory of ion acoustic waves. The estimate for the pressure in a strongly coupled Coulomb system and a scaling law for the compl…
A concise overview of the vibrational model of heat transfer in simple fluids with soft pairwise interactions is presented. The model is applied to evaluate the thermal conductivity coefficient of the strongly coupled Yukawa fluid, which often serves as a simplest model of a real liquid-like dusty (complex) plasma. A reasonable agreement with the available data from molecular dynamics numerical simulations is observed. Universality of the properly reduced thermal conductivity coefficient with respect to the effective coupling parameter is examined. Relations between the vibrational model and t…
Orbital-free molecular dynamics simulations are used to benchmark two popular models for hot dense plasmas: the one component plasma (OCP) and the Yukawa model. A unified concept emerges where an effective OCP (eOCP) is constructed from the short-range structure of the plasma. An unambiguous ionization and the screening length can be defined and used for a Yukawa system, which reproduces the long range structure with finite compressibility. Similarly, the dispersion relation of longitudinal waves is consistent with the screened model at vanishing wavenumber but merges with the OCP at high wave…
A novel regime of the saturation of the Pierce-type ion-sound instability in bounded ion-beam-plasma system is revealed in 1D PIC simulations. It is found that the saturation of the instability is mediated by the oscillating virtual anode potential structure. The periodically oscillating potential barrier separates the incoming beam ions into two groups. One component forms a supersonic beam which is accelerated to an energy exceeding the energy of the initial cold ion beam. The other component is organized as a self-consistent phase space structure of trapped ions with a wide energy spread - …
An approach to calculate high-frequency bulk and shear modului of two-dimensional (2D) weakly screened Yukawa fluids and solids is presented. Elastic moduli are directly related to sound velocities and other important characteristics of the system. In this article we discuss these relations and present exemplary calculation of the longitudinal, transverse, and instantaneous sound velocities and derive a differential equation for the Einstein frequency. Simple analytical results presented demonstrate good accuracy when compared with numerical calculations. The obtained results can be particular…
An analysis of superdiffusion in two-dimensional strongly correlated Yukawa liquids is presented. In particular, we report a regular, montonic behavior of the diffusion exponent on the screening parameter.
In numerous realizations of complex plasmas, dust-dust interactions are characterized by two screening lengths and are thus better described by a combination of Yukawa potentials. The present work investigates the static correlations and the thermodynamics of repulsive dense bi-Yukawa fluids based on the fact that such strongly coupled systems exhibit isomorph invariance. The strong virial-potential energy correlations are demonstrated with the aid of molecular dynamics simulations, an accurate analytical expression for the isomorph family of curves is obtained and an empirical expression for …
The temperature dependence of rates of electron impact ionization and two electrons recombination are calculated using Wannier cross section of electron impact ionization of neutral hydrogen atom. Entropy production and power dissipation are derived for the case when the ionization degree deviates from its equilibrium value. This is the special case of the obtained general formula for entropy production accompanying chemical reactions. Damping rate of the sound waves is calculated and the conditions when ionization processes dominate are considered. A quasi-classical approximation for the heat…
A vibrational model of heat conduction in liquids with soft pairwise interactions is applied to estimate the thermal conductivity coefficient of strongly coupled Yukawa fluids. A reasonable agreement with the available data from numerical simulations is observed. The results can be useful in the context of strongly coupled plasma and complex (dusty) plasma fluids, when Yukawa (or screened Coulomb) interaction potential is applicable.
We present a parametrization of the pair correlation function and the static structure factor of the Coulomb one component plasma (OCP) from the weakly coupled regime to the strongly coupled regime. Recent experiments strongly suggest that the OCP model can play the role of a reference system for warm dense matter. It can provide the ionic static structure factor that is necessary to interpret the x-ray Thomson scattering measurements, for instance. We illustrate this with the interpretation of a x-ray diffraction spectrum recently measured, using a Bayesian method that requires many evaluatio…
The development of one-dimensional parametric instabilities of intense long-wave plasma waves is considered in terms of the so-called hybrid models, when electrons are treated as a fluid and ions are regarded as particles. The analysis is performed for both cases when the average plasma field energy is lower (Zakharov's hybrid model -- ZHM) or greater (Silin's hybrid model -- SHM) than the plasma thermal energy. The efficiency of energy transfer to ions and to ion perturbations under the development of the instability is considered for various values of electron-to-ion mass ratios. The energy …
Very simple explicit analytical expressions are discussed, which are able to describe the dispersion relations of longitudinal waves in strongly coupled plasma systems such as one-component plasma and weakly screened Yukawa fluids with a very good accuracy. Applications to other systems with soft pairwise interactions are briefly discussed.
In dusty (complex) plasmas, containing mesoscopic charged grains, the grain-grain interaction in many cases can be well described through a Yukawa potential. In this Review we summarize the basics of the computational and theoretical approaches capable of describing many-particle Yukawa systems in the liquid and solid phases and discuss the properties of the dynamical density and current correlation spectra of three- and two-dimensional strongly coupled Yukawa systems, generated by molecular dynamics simulations. We show details of the $ω(k)$ dispersion relations for the collective excitations…
An expression for the effective Coulomb logarithm in one-component-plasma is proposed, which allows to extend the applicability of the classical formula for the self-diffusion coefficient to the strongly coupled regime. The proposed analytical approximation demonstrates reasonable agreement with previous numerical simulation results. Relevance to weakly screened Yukawa systems (and, in particular, complex plasmas) is discussed.
We investigate via Molecular Dynamics simulations the propagation of solitons in a two-dimensional many-body system characterized by Yukawa interaction potential. The solitons are created in an equilibrated system by the application of electric field pulses. Such pulses generate pairs of solitons, which are characterized by a positive and negative density peak, respectively, and which propagate into opposite directions. At small perturbation, the features propagate with the longitudinal sound speed, form which an increasing deviation is found at higher density perturbations. An external magnet…
The paper describes the straightforward method of calculation of anomalous absorption of ordinary wave due to transformation into plasma wave in the upper-hybrid resonance region of magnetized plasma with random irregularities. The method is based on the general approach to calculation of scattering or transformation cross-sections in magnetized plasma. The expressions for anomalous attenuation obtained in the paper take into account the thermal motions of the particles and have a wide area of application. Numeric estimations of anomalous absorption for different conditions are carried out.
Dust acoustic waves in the bulk of a dust cloud in complex plasma of low-pressure gas discharge under microgravity conditions are considered. The complex plasma is assumed to conform to the ionization equation of state (IEOS) developed in our previous study. This equation implies the ionization similarity of plasmas. We find singular points of IEOS that determine the behavior of the sound velocity in different regions of the cloud. The fluid approach is utilized to deduce the wave equation that includes the neutral drag term. It is shown that the sound velocity is fully defined by the particle…
In this paper, we studied the structure and dynamics for a trilayer Yukawa crystal. We firstly studied the optimal lattice structure by comparing lattice interaction energy from different lattice distribution, after that, we did the collective mode calculation and analyzed its eigenvectors, if the lattice structure is stable, all the eigenvalues of the dynamical matrix should be positive.
New unstable temperature gradient driven modes in an inhomogeneous plasma are identified. These modes represent transient $ω\simeq k_{\Vert }v_{th}^{(e,i)}$ sound oscillations in magnetized plasma that are kinetically destabilized via Landau interactions. Electron and ion sound branches are unstable for large values of the Larmor radius parameter $% k_{\bot}ρ_{e,i}\gg 1,$ respectively. The instability occurs due to a specific plasma response that significantly deviates from Boltzmann distribution in the region $k_{\bot}ρ_{i,e}\gg 1$ . Pacs: 52.35 Kt, 52.35 Qz
Propagation of Langmuir solitons in inhomogeneous plasmas is investigated numerically. Through numerical simulation solving Zakharov equations, the solitons are accelerated toward the low density side. As a consequence, isolated cavities moving at ion sound velocities are emitted. When the acceleration is further increased, solitons collapse and the cavities separate into two lumps released at ion sound velocities. The threshold is estimated by an analogy between the soliton and a particle overcoming the self-generated potential well.
