In the asymptotic parameterisation of mode frequencies, the phase function $ε(ν)$ completely specifies the detailed structure of the frequency eigenvalues. In practice, however, this function of frequency is reduced to a single scalar $ε$, defined, particularly by observers, as the intercept of a least-squares fit to the frequencies against radial order, or via the central value of this function. The procedure by which this is done is not unique. We derive a few simple expressions relating various observational estimators of $ε$ for radial modes to each other, and to the underlying theoretical object. In particular we demonstrate that a ``reduced' functional parameterisation is both insensitive to mis-estimations of $Δν$, and easy to evaluate locally in terms of both observational and theoretical quantities. It has been shown previously that such a local definition of $ε$ can distinguish between stars on the ascending part of the red giant branch and those in the red clump. We find that this sensitivity to evolutionary stage arises from differences in the local frequency derivative of the underlying phase function, a consequence of differences in internal structure. By constructing an HR-like diagram out of purely seismic observables, we provide a unified view of the \textit{Kepler} asteroseismic sample, as well as the initial results from \textit{TESS}. We investigate how various astrophysical quantities and modelling parameters affect the morphology of isochrones on this seismic diagram. We also show that $ε$ can be used as an independent input when deriving stellar parameters from global asteroseismic quantities.
We aim to unravel the interior mixing profile of the pulsating eclipsing binary KIC9850387 by comparing its dynamical parameters and the parameters derived through a combination of evolutionary and asteroseismic modelling. We created a grid of stellar evolutionary models using the stellar evolutionary code \textsc{mesa} and performed an isochrone-cloud (isocloud) based evolutionary modelling of the system. We then generated a grid of pulsational models using the stellar pulsation code \textsc{gyre} based on the age constraints from the evolutionary modelling. Finally, we performed asteroseismi…
With the observations of an unprecedented number of oscillating subgiant stars expected from NASA's TESS mission, the asteroseismic characterization of subgiant stars will be a vital task for stellar population studies and for testing our theories of stellar evolution. To determine the fundamental properties of a large sample of subgiant stars efficiently, we developed a deep learning method that estimates distributions of fundamental parameters like age and mass over a wide range of input physics by learning from a grid of stellar models varied in eight physical parameters. We applied our met…
The Kepler Asteroseismic Legacy Project provided frequencies, separation ratios, error estimates, and covariance matrices for 66 Kepler main sequence targets. Most of the previous analysis of these data was focused on fitting standard stellar models. We present results of direct asteroseismic inversions using the method of optimally localized averages (OLA), which effectively eliminates the surface effects and attempts to resolve the stellar core structure. The inversions are presented for various structure properties, including the density stratification and sound speed. The results show that…
We present the results of analysis and modelling of the eclipsing binary system, KIC 10661783. The Fourier analysis of the Kepler light curve, corrected for the binary effects, reveals 750 frequency peaks in both p and g-mode regions. Those with the highest amplitudes concentrate in the range of 20-30 d$^{-1}$. To reproduce observed spectrum of frequencies we construct seismic models accounting for the mode instability. In order to obtain instabilities in the g-mode regime we modify the opacity tables data near the Z-bump. In order to reproduce system parameters, we construct evolutionary mode…
The thermally pulsing phase on the asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) is the last nuclear burning phase experienced by most of low and intermediate mass stars. During this phase, the outer chemical stratification above the C/O core of the emerging white dwarf is built up. The chemical structure resulting from progenitor evolution strongly impacts the whole pulsation spectrum exhibited by ZZ Ceti stars, which are pulsating C/O core white dwarfs located on an narrow instability strip at T eff \sim 12000 K. Several physical processes occurring during progenitor evolution strongly affect the chemica…
We conduct a rigorous examination of the nearby red supergiant Betelgeuse by drawing on the synthesis of new observational data and three different modeling techniques. Our observational results include the release of new, processed photometric measurements collected with the space-based SMEI instrument prior to Betelgeuse's recent, unprecedented dimming event. We detect the first radial overtone in the photometric data and report a period of $185\pm13.5$ d. Our theoretical predictions include self-consistent results from multi-timescale evolutionary, oscillatory, and hydrodynamic simulations …

We performed a theoretical analysis on the relevance of the small frequency separation $δν$ in determining stellar ages, masses, and radii. We adopted the SCEPtER pipeline for low-mass stars, [0.7, 1.05] Msun. Synthetic stars were generated and reconstructed assuming different relative precision in $δν$ (5% and 2%). The quantification of the systematic errors arising from a mismatch between synthetic stars and the recovery grid was also performed. The biases were negligible. The statistical error in age estimates was strongly dependent on the stellar evolutionary phase. It is at its maximum at…
Thermohaline instability and rotation-induced mixing. III - Grid of stellar models and asymptotic asteroseismic quantities from the pre-main sequence up to the AGB for low- and intermediate-mass stars at various metallicities
Aims: We investigate the thermal and chemical structure in the near-core region of stars with a convective core by means of gravito-inertial modes. We do so by determining the probing power of different asteroseismic observables and fitting methodologies. We focus on the case of the B-type star KIC$\,$7760680, rotating at a quarter of its critical rotation velocity. Methods: We compute grids of 1D stellar structure and evolution models for two different prescriptions of the temperature gradient and mixing profile in the near-core region. We determine which of these prescriptions is preferred a…
Models of solar-like oscillators yield acoustic modes at different frequencies than would be seen in actual stars possessing identical interior structure, due to modelling error near the surface. This asteroseismic "surface term" must be corrected when mode frequencies are used to infer stellar structure. Subgiants exhibit oscillations of mixed acoustic ($p$-mode) and gravity ($g$-mode) character, which defy description by the traditional $p$-mode asymptotic relation. Since nonparametric diagnostics of the surface term rely on this description, they cannot be applied to subgiants directly. In …
Asteroseismology using space-based telescopes is vital to our understanding of stellar structure and evolution. {\textit{CoRoT}}, {\textit{Kepler}}, and {\textit{TESS}} space telescopes have detected large numbers of solar-like oscillating evolved stars. %(kaynaklar, Kallinger, vb ). Solar-like oscillation frequencies have an important role in the determination of fundamental stellar parameters; in the literature, the relations between the two is established by the so-called scaling relations. % These scaling relations are in better agreement with mass and radius of main-sequence stars with la…
In a series of papers, we have recently demonstrated that it is possible to construct stellar structure models that robustly mimic the stratification of multi-dimensional radiative magneto-hydrodynamic simulations at every time-step of the computed evolution. The resulting models offer a more realistic depiction of the near-surface layers of stars with convective envelopes than parameterizations, such as mixing length theory, do. In this paper, we explore how this model improvement impacts on seismic and non-seismic properties of stellar models across the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. We show t…
We propose a methodological framework to perform forward asteroseismic modeling of stars with a convective core, based on gravity-mode oscillations. These probe the near-core region in the deep stellar interior. The modeling relies on a set of observed high-precision oscillation frequencies of low-degree coherent gravity modes with long lifetimes and their observational uncertainties. Identification of the mode degree and azimuthal order is assumed to be achieved from rotational splitting and/or from period spacing patterns. This paper has two major outcomes. The first is a comprehensive list …
We present a method for measuring internal stellar structure based on asteroseismology that we call "inversions for agreement." The method accounts for imprecise estimates of stellar mass and radius as well as the relatively limited oscillation mode sets that are available for distant stars. By construction, the results of the method are independent of stellar models. We apply this method to measure the isothermal sound speeds in the cores of the solar-type stars 16 Cyg A and B using asteroseismic data obtained from Kepler observations. We compare the asteroseismic structure that we deduce aga…
Context. The large quantity of high-quality asteroseismic data that obtained from space-based photometric missions and the accuracy of the resulting frequencies motivate a careful consideration of the accuracy of computed oscillation frequencies of stellar models, when applied as diagnostics of the model properties. Aims. Based on models of red-giant stars that have been independently calculated using different stellar evolution codes, we investigate the extent to which the differences in the model calculation affect the model oscillation frequencies. Methods. For each of the models, which cov…

In this letter, we report the discovery of 24 new super Li-rich (A(Li) $\ge$ 3.2) giants of He-core burning phase at red clump region. Results are based on systematic search of a large sample of about 12,500 giants common to the LAMOST spectroscopic and Kepler time resolved photometric surveys. The two key parameters derived from Kepler data; average period spacing ($Δp$) between $l=1$ mixed gravity dominated g-modes and average large frequency separation ($Δν$) $l=0$ acoustic p-modes, suggest all the Li-rich giants are in He-core burning phase. This is the first unbiased survey subjected to a…
PG 1159-035 is the prototype of the DOV hot pre-white dwarf pulsators. It was observed during the Kepler satellite K2 mission for 69 days in 59 s cadence mode and by the TESS satellite for 25 days in 20 s cadence mode. We present a detailed asteroseismic analysis of those data. We identify a total of 107 frequencies representing 32 l=1 modes, 27 frequencies representing 12 l=2 modes, and 8 combination frequencies. The combination frequencies and the modes with very high k values represent new detections. The multiplet structure reveals an average splitting of 4.0+/-0.4 muHz for l=1 and 6.8+/-0…

We report an analysis of the first known Beta Cep pulsator observed by the TESS mission, the runaway star PHL 346 = HN Aqr. The star, previously known as a singly-periodic pulsator, has at least 34 oscillation modes excited, 12 of those in the g-mode domain and 22 p modes. Analysis of archival data implies that the amplitude and frequency of the dominant mode and the stellar radial velocity were variable over time. A binary nature would be inconsistent with the inferred ejection velocity from the Galactic disc of 420 km/s, which is too large to be survivable by a runaway binary system. A kinem…

We theoretically quantify the impact of observational errors on the recovered age for stars in MS and RGB phases. We adopted Teff, [Fe/H], Delta_nu and nu_max as observational constraints. Artificial stars were sampled from a reference isochrone and subjected to random perturbation to simulate observational errors. Their ages were then recovered by means of a MCMC approach. The differences between the recovered and true ages were modelled against the errors in the observables by means of linear models and projection pursuit regression models. From linear models we find that no age error source…
The advent of space-based photometry observations provided high-quality asteroseismic data for a large number of stars. These observations enabled the adaptation of advanced techniques, until then restricted to helioseismology, to study the best asteroseismic targets. Amongst these, the 16Cyg binary system holds a special place, being the brightest solar twins observed by Kepler. For this system, modellers have access to high-quality asteroseismic, spectroscopic and interferometric data, making it the perfect testbed for the limitations of stellar models. We aim to further constrain the intern…
