Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) is the theory that describes how hadrons are built from quarks and gluons via the strong interaction. Many predictions have been experimentally confirmed, but others remain under experimental investigation. Of particular interest is how gluonic excitations give rise to states with constituent glue. One class of such states are hybrid mesons that are predicted by theoretical models and Lattice QCD calculations. Searching for and understanding the nature of these states is a primary physics goal of the GlueX experiment at the CEBAF accelerator at Jefferson Lab in the US. We will give an overview of the experiment, and present the status of the search for a hybrid meson candidate, Y (2175). This work is supported by HGS-HIRe.
Photoproduction experiments are a key tool in the investigation of the spectrum of hadronic states and the way gluons contribute to this spectrum. The GlueX experiment, located at Jefferson Lab, features a linearly polarized tagged photon beam and its detector system is optimized to measure a wide range of neutral and charged final states. GlueX offers unique capabilities to study the spectrum of hadrons and is dedicated to the search for hybrid mesons, states with gluonic degrees of freedom. This talk presents first results from our initial campaign of data taking which finished in 2018.
The GlueX experiment is a photoproduction experiment located at Thomas Jefferson National Lab in Newport News, Virginia. GlueX is capable of making beam asymmetry ($Σ$) measurements using a tagged, linearly-polarized 9 GeV photon beam incident on a hydrogen target. Measurements of the beam asymmetry for the exclusive reactions $γp \rightarrow π^0 p$, $γp \rightarrow ηp$ and $γp \rightarrow η' p$ will provide insight into the meson production mechanisms. GlueX measurements are the first beam asymmetry results for the $η$ and $η'$ in this energy range and are expected to further constrain Regge …
The GlueX experiment is located at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) in Newport News, VA, USA. It features a hermetic 4$π$ detector with excellent tracking and calorimetry capabilities. Its 9 GeV linearly polarized photon beam is produced from the 12 GeV electron beam, delivered by JLab's Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF), via bremsstrahlung on a thin diamond and is incident on a LH2 target. GlueX recently finished its first data taking period and published first results. The main goal of GlueX is to measure gluonic excitations of mesons. These so-ca…
The GlueX experiment located at Jefferson Lab studies the spectrum of hadrons using photoproduction on a LH$_2$ target in a wide variety of final states. With its detector system capable of measuring neutral and charged final state particles over almost the full solid angle, and very good particle identification capabilities, GlueX can measure many different hadrons containing strangeness. A linearly polarized photon beam allows the measurement of polarization observables, which contain information about the production mechanisms involved in generating strange particles in photoproduction. In …
The GlueX experiment, located in experimental Hall D of Jefferson Lab, seeks to map the spectrum of light mesons in search of exotic hybrid mesons, a predicted class of hadronic states with explicit gluonic degrees of freedom. GlueX is a photoproduction experiment utilizing a linearly polarized photon beam at $E_γ=$ 8-9 GeV and a large acceptance spectrometer. The experiment has already collected orders of magnitude more data than previous experiments at similar energies. We show results on asymmetry measurements in the production of pseudoscalars mesons, which refine our understanding of prod…
Baryon - anti-baryon photoproduction off a proton target is being studied in detail at Jefferson Lab with the GlueX Experiment. We observe $p\bar{p}$ and, for the first time, $Λ\barΛ$ photoproduction (with $Λ\rightarrow π^- p$, $\barΛ \rightarrow π^+ \bar{p}$) from thresholds up to $E_γ = 11.4$ GeV. Preliminary spectra from data accumulated during the GlueX Phase-I period are shown. Angular distributions of the photoproduced hyperons indicate more than one production mechanism in the reaction channel $γp \rightarrow Λ\barΛp$. A Monte Carlo simulation with four mechanisms, tested through compar…
The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab aims to study the light meson spectrum with an emphasis on the search for hybrid mesons. To this end, a linearly-polarized $9\,$GeV photon beam impinges on a hydrogen target contained within a detector with near-complete neutral and charged particle coverage. In 2018, the experiment completed its first phase of data taking in its design configuration and the quantity of analyzed data already exceed that of previous experiments for polarized photoproduction in this energy regime by orders of magnitude. Polarization observables such as spin-density matrix el…

The search for hybrid mesons and the detailed study of their spectrum is the primary goal of the GlueX Experiment in Hall D at Jefferson Lab. The identification and study of hybrid mesons promises to provide unique insight into gluonic degrees of freedom in QCD and the nature of confinement. The experiment combines an intense photon beam with linear polarization peaking around 9 GeV incident on a liquid hydrogen target with a nearly hermetic spectrometer, allowing for the comprehensive study of charged and neutral particle final states. The first phase of the experiment has recently concluded,…
For the first time, baryon-antibaryon photoproduction in the reaction $γp \to Λ\barΛ p$ has been observed at photon energies from threshold near 4.9 GeV to 11.6 GeV. The measurements are in progress with the GlueX spectrometer in Hall D at Jefferson Lab. We describe here the apparatus and methods used to make these measurements and outline the physics goals of the work. Some of the newly-seen reaction phenomenology is presented.

The primary goal of the GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab is to search for and map the spectrum of light hybrid mesons. Many experiments have studied and reported evidence of exotic mesons decaying into $ηπ$ and $η'π$ final states. With a large acceptance to both charged and neutral particles, GlueX has access to both the neutral, $γp\toη^{(')}π^{0}p$, and charged, $γp\toη^{(')}π^{-}Δ^{++}$, exchanges. These proceedings will give an overview of the current studies being performed at GlueX in $η^{(')}π^{-}$ final states. It will discuss early physics goals and outline the strategy for an amplit…
The quality of the recent GlueX $J/ψ$ photoproduction data from Hall~D at Jefferson Laboratory, and the proximity of the data to the energy threshold, gives access to a variety of interesting physics aspects. As an example, an estimation of the $J/ψ$-nucleon scattering length $α_{J/ψp}$ is provided within the vector meson dominance model. It results in $|α_{J/ψp}| = (3.08\pm 0.55 ({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.45 ({\rm syst.}))$~mfm.
We have evaluated pseudoscalar and scalar neutral pion photoproduction in $\vecγp\toπ^0p$ and $\vecγp\to a_0^0p$ above the resonance region and within Regge phenomenology. Our fit, including GlueX $Σ$ pseudoscalar photoproduction data, shows that previous SLAC $Σ$ measurements for $\vecγp \to π^0p$ above $E_γ= 4~\mathrm{GeV}$ are at variance with SLAC data with more recent measurements made by GlueX in vicinity of $E_γ= 9~\mathrm{GeV}$. The Regge model predicts that the beam polarization asymmetry $Σ$ of the scalar meson is opposite to that of pseudoscalar meson photoproduction, however, the c…
The high accuracy $ϕ$-meson photoproduction data from the CLAS experiment in Hall~B of Jefferson Laboratory allow us to determine the near-threshold total cross section of the $γp\toϕp$ reaction and use it for evaluating the $ϕp$ scattering length $α_{ϕp}$. These data result in an absolute value of $|α_{ϕp}| = (0.063\pm 0.010)$~fm, which is smaller than the typical hadron size. A comparative analysis of $α_{ϕp}$ with the previously determined scattering lengths for $ωp$ and $J/ψp$ from the A2 and GlueX experiments is performed.

We present a search for axion-like particles, $a$, produced in photon-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of approximately 4 GeV, focusing on the scenario where the $a$-gluon coupling is dominant. The search uses $a\toγγ$ and $a\toπ^+π^-π^0$ decays, and a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 168 pb$^{-1}$ collected with the GlueX detector. The search for $a\toγγ$ decays is performed in the mass range of $180 < m_a < 480$ MeV, while the search for $a\toπ^+π^-π^0$ decays explores the $600 < m_a < 720$ MeV region. No evidence for a signal is found, and 90% confidence-…
We explore the sensitivity of photon-beam experiments to axion-like particles (ALPs) with QCD-scale masses whose dominant coupling to the Standard Model is either to photons or gluons. We introduce a novel data-driven method that eliminates the need for knowledge of nuclear form factors or the photon-beam flux when considering coherent Primakoff production off a nuclear target, and show that data collected by the PrimEx experiment could substantially improve the sensitivity to ALPs with $0.03 \lesssim m_a \lesssim 0.3$ GeV. Furthermore, we explore the potential sensitivity of running the GlueX…

A study of meson and baryon decays to strange final states with GlueX in Hall D (A proposal to the 39th Jefferson Lab Program Advisory Committee)
High-accuracy $Υ$-meson photoproduction data from EIC and EicC experiments will allow the measurement of the near-threshold total cross section of the reaction $γp\toΥp$, from which the absolute value of the $Υp$ scattering length, $|α_{Υp}|$, can be extracted using a Vector-Meson Dominance model. For this evaluation, we used $Υ$-meson photoproduction quasi-data from the QCD approach (the production amplitude can be factorized in terms of gluonic generalized parton distributions and the quarkonium distribution amplitude). A comparative analysis of $|α_{Υp}|$ with the recently determined scatte…

The diffractive photoproduction of $J/Ψ$ on a nucleon, is mostly due to gluonic exchanges at all $\sqrt{s}$. In holographic QCD (large number of colors and strong $^\prime$t Hooft coupling), these exchanges are captured by gravitons near threshold, and their Reggeized Pomeron form asymptotically. We revisit our holographic analysis of the A and D gravitational form factors in light of the new lattice data, and use them to refine our predictions for the photoproduction of $J/Ψ$ near threshold, and the comparison to the GlueX data. We use these results to estimate the scalar and mass radii of th…

The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab has been designed to study photoproduction reactions with a 9-GeV linearly polarized photon beam. The energy and arrival time of beam photons are tagged using a scintillator hodoscope and a scintillating fiber array. The photon flux is determined using a pair spectrometer, while the linear polarization of the photon beam is determined using a polarimeter based on triplet photoproduction. Charged-particle tracks from interactions in the central target are analyzed in a solenoidal field using a central straw-tube drift chamber and six packages of planar cham…
We report on the measurement of the beam asymmetry $Σ$ for the reactions $\vecγp\rightarrow pη$ and $\vecγp \rightarrow pη^{\prime}$ from the GlueX experiment, using an 8.2--8.8 GeV linearly polarized tagged photon beam incident on a liquid hydrogen target in Hall D at Jefferson Lab. These measurements are made as a function of momentum transfer $-t$, with significantly higher statistical precision than our earlier $η$ measurements, and are the first measurements of $η^{\prime}$ in this energy range. We compare the results to theoretical predictions based on $t$--channel quasi-particle exchang…
The near threshold photo or electroproduction of heavy vector quarkonium off the proton is studied in quantum chromodynamics. Similar to the high-energy limit, the production amplitude can be factorized in terms of gluonic Generalized Parton Distributions and the quarkonium distribution amplitude. At the threshold, the threshold kinematics has a large skewness parameter $ξ$, leading to the dominance of the spin-2 contribution over higher-spin twist-2 operators. Thus threshold production data are useful to extract the gluonic gravitational form factors, allowing studying the gluonic contributio…
Since the discovery of the $Λ(1405)$, it remains poorly described by conventional constituent quark models, and it is a candidate for having an "exotic" meson-baryon or "penta-quark" structure, similar to states recently reported in the hidden charm sector. The $Λ(1405)$ can be produced in the reaction $γp \rightarrow K^+Λ(1405)$. The pure I=0 decay mode into $Σ^0π^0$ is prohibited for the mass-overlapping $Σ(1385)$. Combining a large aperture forward magnetic spectrometer and a central BGO crystal calorimeter, the BGO-OD experiment is ideally suited to measure this decay with the $K^+$ in the…
