By the Grunbaum-Aksenov Theorem (extending Grotzsch's Theorem) every planar graph with at most three triangles is 3-colorable. However, there are infinitely many planar 4-critical graphs with exactly four triangles. We describe all such graphs. This answers a question of Erdos from 1990.
In 1975, Plesník characterized all triangle-free planar graphs as having a diameter $2$. We characterize all triangle-free projective-planar graphs having a diameter $2$ and discuss some applications. In particular, the main result is applied to calculate the analogue of clique numbers for graphs, namely, colored mixed graphs, having different types of arcs and edges.
We prove that every triangle-free planar graph of order $n$ and size $m$ has an induced linear forest with at least $\frac{9n - 2m}{11}$ vertices, and thus at least $\frac{5n + 8}{11}$ vertices. Furthermore, we show that there are triangle-free planar graphs on $n$ vertices whose largest induced linear forest has order $\lceil \frac{n}{2} \rceil + 1$.
Steinberg and Tovey proved that every n-vertex planar triangle-free graph has an independent set of size at least (n+1)/3, and described an infinite class of tight examples. We show that all n-vertex planar triangle-free graphs except for this one infinite class have independent sets of size at least (n+2)/3.
Let G be a planar triangle-free graph and let C be a cycle in G of length at most 8. We characterize all situations where a 3-coloring of C does not extend to a proper 3-coloring of the whole graph.
it is shown that each triangle-free 1-planar graph with maximum degree $Δ\geq7$ can be $Δ$-colorable by Discharging Method.
An $({\cal F},{\cal F}_d)$-partition of a graph is a vertex-partition into two sets $F$ and $F_d$ such that the graph induced by $F$ is a forest and the one induced by $F_d$ is a forest with maximum degree at most $d$. We prove that every triangle-free planar graph admits an $({\cal F},{\cal F}_5)$-partition. Moreover we show that if for some integer $d$ there exists a triangle-free planar graph that does not admit an $({\cal F},{\cal F}_d)$-partition, then it is an NP-complete problem to decide whether a triangle-free planar graph admits such a partition.
Let G be a planar graph with a list assignment L. Suppose a preferred color is given for some of the vertices. We prove that if G is triangle-free and all lists have size at least four, then there exists an L-coloring respecting at least a constant fraction of the preferences.
A graph is $k$-degenerate if every subgraph has minimum degree at most $k$. We provide lower bounds on the size of a maximum induced 2-degenerate subgraph in a triangle-free planar graph. We denote the size of a maximum induced 2-degenerate subgraph of a graph $G$ by $α_2(G)$. We prove that if $G$ is a connected triangle-free planar graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges, then $α_2(G) \geq \frac{6n - m - 1}{5}$. By Euler's Formula, this implies $α_2(G) \geq \frac{4}{5}n$. We also prove that if $G$ is a triangle-free planar graph on $n$ vertices with at most $n_3$ vertices of degree at most thre…
Every triangle-free planar graph on n vertices has an independent set of size at least (n+1)/3, and this lower bound is tight. We give an algorithm that, given a triangle-free planar graph G on n vertices and an integer k>=0, decides whether G has an independent set of size at least (n+k)/3, in time 2^{O(sqrt{k})}n. Thus, the problem is fixed-parameter tractable when parameterized by k. Furthermore, as a corollary of the result used to prove the correctness of the algorithm, we show that there exists epsilon>0 such that every planar graph of girth at least five on n vertices has an independent…

Since planar triangle-free graphs are 3-colourable, such a graph with n vertices has an independent set of size at least n/3. We prove that unless the graph contains a certain obstruction, its independence number is at least n/(3-epsilon) for some fixed epsilon>0. We also provide a reduction rule for this obstruction, which enables us to transform any plane triangle-free graph G into a plane triangle-free graph G' such that alpha(G')-|G'|/3=alpha(G)-|G|/3 and |G'|<=(alpha(G)-|G|/3)/epsilon. We derive a number of algorithmic consequences as well as a structural description of n-vertex plane tri…
We study the {\sc Clique} problem in classes of intersection graphs of convex sets in the plane. The problem is known to be NP-complete in convex-set intersection graphs and straight-line-segment intersection graphs, but solvable in polynomial time in intersection graphs of homothetic triangles. We extend the latter result by showing that for every convex polygon $P$ with sides parallel to $k$ directions, every $n$-vertex graph which is an intersection graph of homothetic copies of $P$ contains at most $n^{k}$ inclusion-wise maximal cliques. We actually prove this result for a more general cla…

An acyclic edge coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper edge coloring such that no bichromatic cycles are produced. The acyclic edge coloring conjecture by Fiam{č}ik (1978) and Alon, Sudakov and Zaks (2001) states that every simple graph with maximum degree $Δ$ is acyclically edge $(Δ+ 2)$-colorable. Despite many milestones, the conjecture remains open even for planar graphs. In this paper, we confirm affirmatively the conjecture on planar graphs without intersecting triangles. We do so by first showing, by discharging methods, that every planar graph without intersecting triangles must have at le…
An acyclic edge coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper edge coloring such that every cycle is colored with at least three colors. The acyclic chromatic index $\chiup_{a}'(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the least number of colors in an acyclic edge coloring of $G$. It was conjectured that $\chiup'_{a}(G)\leq Δ(G) + 2$ for any simple graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ(G)$. A graph is {\em $1$-planar} if it can be drawn on the plane such that every edge is crossed by at most one other edge. In this paper, we prove that every triangle-free $1$-planar graph $G$ has an acyclic edge coloring with $Δ(G) + 16$ color…
For planar graphs, we consider the problems of \emph{list edge coloring} and \emph{list total coloring}. Edge coloring is the problem of coloring the edges while ensuring that two edges that are adjacent receive different colors. Total coloring is the problem of coloring the edges and the vertices while ensuring that two edges that are adjacent, two vertices that are adjacent, or a vertex and an edge that are incident receive different colors. In their list extensions, instead of having the same set of colors for the whole graph, every vertex or edge is assigned some set of colors and has to b…

Every $n$-vertex planar triangle-free graph with maximum degree at most $3$ has an independent set of size at least $\frac{3}{8}n$. This was first conjectured by Albertson, Bollobás and Tucker, and was later proved by Heckman and Thomas. Fraughnaugh and Locke conjectured that the planarity requirement could be relaxed into just forbidding a few specific nonplanar subgraphs: They described a family $\mathcal{F}$ of six nonplanar graphs (each of order at most $22$) and conjectured that every $n$-vertex triangle-free graph with maximum degree at most $3$ having no subgraph isomorphic to a member …
A path decomposition of a graph $G$ is a collection of edge-disjoint paths of $G$ that covers the edge set of $G$. Gallai (1968) conjectured that every connected graph on $n$ vertices admits a path decomposition of cardinality at most $\lfloor (n+1)/2\rfloor$. Gallai's Conjecture has been verified for many classes of graphs. In particular, Lovász (1968) verified this conjecture for graphs with at most one vertex with even degree, and Pyber (1996) verified it for graphs in which every cycle contains a vertex with odd degree. Recently, Bonamy and Perrett (2016) verified Gallai's Conjecture for g…
A recent lower bound on the number of edges in a k-critical n-vertex graph by Kostochka and Yancey yields a half-page proof of the celebrated Grötzsch Theorem that every planar triangle-free graph is 3-colorable. In this paper we use the same bound to give short proofs of other known theorems on 3-coloring of planar graphs, among whose is the Grünbaum-Aksenov Theorem that every planar with at most three triangles is 3-colorable. We also prove the new result that every graph obtained from a triangle-free planar graph by adding a vertex of degree at most four is 3-colorable.
The independence ratio of 4-cycle-free planar graphs

We consider {\em L-graphs}, that is contact graphs of axis-aligned L-shapes in the plane, all with the same rotation. We provide several characterizations of L-graphs, drawing connections to Schnyder realizers and canonical orders of maximally planar graphs. We show that every contact system of L's can always be converted to an equivalent one with equilateral L's. This can be used to show a stronger version of a result of Thomassen, namely, that every planar graph can be represented as a contact system of square-based cuboids. We also study a slightly more restricted version of equilateral L-c…
DP-coloring, also known as correspondence coloring, is introduced by Dvo{ř}{á}k and Postle. It is a generalization of list coloring. In this paper, we show that every connected toroidal graph without triangles adjacent to $5$-cycles has minimum degree at most three unless it is a 2-connected $4$-regular graph with Euler characteristic $ε(G) = 0$. Consequently, every toroidal graph without triangles adjacent to $5$-cycles is DP-$4$-colorable. In the final, we show that every planar graph without two certain subgraphs is DP-$4$-colorable. As immediate consequences, (i) every planar graph without…
Grotzsch's theorem states that every triangle-free planar graph is 3-colorable. Several relatively simple proofs of this fact were provided by Thomassen and other authors. It is easy to convert these proofs into quadratic-time algorithms to find a 3-coloring, but it is not clear how to find such a coloring in linear time (Kowalik used a nontrivial data structure to construct an O(n log n) algorithm). We design a linear-time algorithm to find a 3-coloring of a given triangle-free planar graph. The algorithm avoids using any complex data structures, which makes it easy to implement. As a by-prod…
We give here some new lower bounds on the order of a largest induced forest in planar graphs with girth $4$ and $5$. In particular we prove that a triangle-free planar graph of order $n$ admits an induced forest of order at least $\frac{6n+7}{11}$ , improving the lower bound of Salavatipour [M. R. Salavatipour, Large induced forests in triangle-free planar graphs, Graphs and Combinatorics, 22:113-126, 2006]. We also prove that a planar graph of order $n$ and girth at least $5$ admits an induced forest of order at least $\frac{44n+50}{69}$.
Let $E(k, \ell)$ denote the smallest integer such that any set of at least $E(k, \ell)$ points in the plane, no three on a line, contains either an empty convex polygon with $k$ vertices or an empty pseudo-triangle with $\ell$ vertices. The existence of $E(k, \ell)$ for positive integers $k, \ell\geq 3$, is the consequence of a result proved by Valtr [Discrete and Computational Geometry, Vol. 37, 565--576, 2007]. In this paper, following a series of new results about the existence of empty pseudo-triangles in point sets with triangular convex hulls, we determine the exact values of $E(k, 5)$ a…
An $acyclic$ edge coloring of a graph is a proper edge coloring such that there are no bichromatic cycles. The \emph{acyclic chromatic index} of a graph is the minimum number k such that there is an acyclic edge coloring using k colors and is denoted by $a'(G)$. It was conjectured by Alon, Sudakov and Zaks (and much earlier by Fiamcik) that $a'(G)\le Δ+2$, where $Δ=Δ(G)$ denotes the maximum degree of the graph. If every induced subgraph $H$ of $G$ satisfies the condition $\vert E(H) \vert \le 2\vert V(H) \vert -1$, we say that the graph $G$ satisfies $Property\ A$. In this paper, we prove that…
Several classical constructions illustrate the fact that the chromatic number of a graph can be arbitrarily large compared to its clique number. However, until very recently, no such construction was known for intersection graphs of geometric objects in the plane. We provide a general construction that for any arc-connected compact set $X$ in $\mathbb{R}^2$ that is not an axis-aligned rectangle and for any positive integer $k$ produces a family $\mathcal{F}$ of sets, each obtained by an independent horizontal and vertical scaling and translation of $X$, such that no three sets in $\mathcal{F}$…
It is well-known that every planar 4-connected graph has a Hamiltonian cycle. In this paper, we study the question whether every 1-planar 4-connected graph has a Hamiltonian cycle. We show that this is false in general, even for 5-connected graphs, but true if the graph has a 1-planar drawing where every region is a triangle.
A fan is a set of edges with a single common endpoint. A graph is fan-crossing if it admits a drawing in the plane so that each edge is crossed by edges of a fan. It is fan-planar if, in addition, the common endpoint is on the same side of the crossed edge. A graph is adjacency-crossing if it admits a drawing so that crossing edges are adjacent. Then it excludes independent crossings which are crossings by edges with no common endpoint. Adjacency-crossing allows triangle-crossings in which an edge crosses the edges of a triangle, which is excluded at fan-crossing graphs. We show that every adj…

A graph is k-choosable if it can be colored whenever every vertex has a list of at least k available colors. We prove that if cycles of length at most four in a planar graph G are pairwise far apart, then G is 3-choosable. This is analogous to the problem of Havel regarding 3-colorability of planar graphs with triangles far apart.
Any simple planar graph can be triangulated, i.e., we can add edges to it, without adding multi-edges, such that the result is planar and all faces are triangles. In this paper, we study the problem of triangulating a planar graph without increasing the pathwidth by much. We show that if a planar graph has pathwidth $k$, then we can triangulate it so that the resulting graph has pathwidth $O(k)$ (where the factors are 1, 8 and 16 for 3-connected, 2-connected and arbitrary graphs). With similar techniques, we also show that any outer-planar graph of pathwidth $k$ can be turned into a maximal ou…
We show that every simple planar near-triangulation with minimum degree at least three contains two disjoint total dominating sets. The class includes all simple planar triangulations other than the triangle. This affirms a conjecture of Goddard and Henning [Thoroughly dispersed colorings, J. Graph Theory, 88 (2018) 174-191].
A graph $G$ is {\em $k$-choosable} if for every assignment of a set $S(v)$ of $k$ colors to every vertex $v$ of $G$, there is a proper coloring of $G$ that assigns to each vertex $v$ a color from $S(v)$. We consider the complexity of deciding whether a given graph is $k$-choosable for some constant $k$. In particular, it is shown that deciding whether a given planar graph is 4-choosable is NP-hard, and so is the problem of deciding whether a given planar triangle-free graph is 3-choosable. We also obtain simple constructions of a planar graph which is not 4-choosable and a planar triangle-free…
A $k$-subcoloring of a graph is a partition of the vertex set into at most $k$ cluster graphs, that is, graphs with no induced $P_3$. 2-subcoloring is known to be NP-complete for comparability graphs and three subclasses of planar graphs, namely triangle-free planar graphs with maximum degree 4, planar perfect graphs with maximum degree 4, and planar graphs with girth 5. We show that 2-subcoloring is also NP-complete for planar comparability graphs with maximum degree 4.
Felsner, Hurtado, Noy and Streinu (2000) conjectured that arrangement graphs of simple great-circle arrangements have chromatic number at most $3$. Motivated by this conjecture, we study the colorability of arrangement graphs for different classes of arrangements of (pseudo-)circles. In this paper the conjecture is verified for $\triangle$-saturated pseudocircle arrangements, i.e., for arrangements where one color class of the 2-coloring of faces consists of triangles only, as well as for further classes of (pseudo-)circle arrangements. These results are complemented by a construction which ma…

A graph $G = (V, E)$ is \emph{partitionable} if there exists a partition $\{A, B\}$ of $V$ such that $A$ induces a disjoint union of cliques and $B$ induces a triangle-free graph. In this paper we investigate the computational complexity of deciding whether a graph is partitionable. The problem is known to be $\NP$-complete on arbitrary graphs. Here it is proved that if a graph $G$ is bull-free, planar, perfect, $K_4$-free or does not contain certain holes then deciding whether $G$ is partitionable is $\NP$-complete. This answers an open question posed by Thomass{é}, Trotignon and Vuškovi{ć}. …
We prove that triangulated IC-planar and NIC-planar graphs can be recognized in cubic time. A graph is 1-planar if it can be drawn in the plane with at most one crossing per edge. A drawing is IC-planar if, in addition, each vertex is incident to at most one crossing edge and NIC-planar if two pairs of crossing edges share at most one vertex. In a triangulated drawing each face is a triangle. In consequence, planar-maximal and maximal IC-planar and NIC-planar graphs can be recognized in O(n^5) time and maximum and optimal ones in O(n^3) time. In contrast, recognizing 3-connected IC-planar and …
This paper investigates the computational complexity of deciding whether the vertices of a graph can be partitioned into a disjoint union of cliques and a triangle-free subgraph. This problem is known to be $\NP$-complete on arbitrary graphs. We show that this problem remains $\NP$-complete even when restricted to planar graphs and perfect graphs.
