The high frame rate is a critical requirement for capturing fast human motions. In this setting, existing markerless image-based methods are constrained by the lighting requirement, the high data bandwidth and the consequent high computation overhead. In this paper, we propose EventCap --- the first approach for 3D capturing of high-speed human motions using a single event camera. Our method combines model-based optimization and CNN-based human pose detection to capture high-frequency motion details and to reduce the drifting in the tracking. As a result, we can capture fast motions at millisecond resolution with significantly higher data efficiency than using high frame rate videos. Experiments on our new event-based fast human motion dataset demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of our method, as well as its robustness to challenging lighting conditions.

We propose Neural-DynamicReconstruction (NDR), a template-free method to recover high-fidelity geometry and motions of a dynamic scene from a monocular RGB-D camera. In NDR, we adopt the neural implicit function for surface representation and rendering such that the captured color and depth can be fully utilized to jointly optimize the surface and deformations. To represent and constrain the non-rigid deformations, we propose a novel neural invertible deforming network such that the cycle consistency between arbitrary two frames is automatically satisfied. Considering that the surface topology…
We introduce DROID-SLAM, a new deep learning based SLAM system. DROID-SLAM consists of recurrent iterative updates of camera pose and pixelwise depth through a Dense Bundle Adjustment layer. DROID-SLAM is accurate, achieving large improvements over prior work, and robust, suffering from substantially fewer catastrophic failures. Despite training on monocular video, it can leverage stereo or RGB-D video to achieve improved performance at test time. The URL to our open source code is https://github.com/princeton-vl/DROID-SLAM.
This paper proposes a novel approach for extending monocular visual odometry to a stereo camera system. The proposed method uses an additional camera to accurately estimate and optimize the scale of the monocular visual odometry, rather than triangulating 3D points from stereo matching. Specifically, the 3D points generated by the monocular visual odometry are projected onto the other camera of the stereo pair, and the scale is recovered and optimized by directly minimizing the photometric error. It is computationally efficient, adding minimal overhead to the stereo vision system compared to s…

We design a multiscopic vision system that utilizes a low-cost monocular RGB camera to acquire accurate depth estimation for robotic applications. Unlike multi-view stereo with images captured at unconstrained camera poses, the proposed system actively controls a robot arm with a mounted camera to capture a sequence of images in horizontally or vertically aligned positions with the same parallax. In this system, we combine the cost volumes for stereo matching between the reference image and the surrounding images to form a fused cost volume that is robust to outliers. Experiments on the Middle…
Rolling Shutter (RS) cameras have become popularized because of low-cost imaging capability. However, the RS cameras suffer from undesirable artifacts when the camera or the subject is moving, or illumination condition changes. For that reason, Monocular Visual Odometry (MVO) with RS cameras produces inaccurate ego-motion estimates. Previous works solve this RS distortion problem with motion prediction from images and/or inertial sensors. However, the MVO still has trouble in handling the RS distortion when the camera motion changes abruptly (e.g. vibration of mobile cameras causes extremely f…
Perceiving 3D information is of paramount importance in many applications of computer vision. Recent advances in monocular depth estimation have shown that gaining such knowledge from a single camera input is possible by training deep neural networks to predict inverse depth and pose, without the necessity of ground truth data. The majority of such approaches, however, require camera parameters to be fed explicitly during training. As a result, image sequences from wild cannot be used during training. While there exist methods which also predict camera intrinsics, their performance is not on p…

This paper proposes a method to extract the position and pose of vehicles in the 3D world from a single traffic camera. Most previous monocular 3D vehicle detection algorithms focused on cameras on vehicles from the perspective of a driver, and assumed known intrinsic and extrinsic calibration. On the contrary, this paper focuses on the same task using uncalibrated monocular traffic cameras. We observe that the homography between the road plane and the image plane is essential to 3D vehicle detection and the data synthesis for this task, and the homography can be estimated without the camera i…

This paper proposes a novel method of estimating the absolute scale of monocular SfM for a multi-modal stereo camera. In the fields of computer vision and robotics, scale estimation for monocular SfM has been widely investigated in order to simplify systems. This paper addresses the scale estimation problem for a stereo camera system in which two cameras capture different spectral images (e.g., RGB and FIR), whose feature points are difficult to directly match using descriptors. Furthermore, the number of matching points between FIR images can be comparatively small, owing to the low resolutio…
Monocular 3D vehicle localization is an important task in Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) and Cooperative Vehicle Infrastructure System (CVIS), which is usually achieved by monocular 3D vehicle detection. However, depth information cannot be obtained directly by monocular cameras due to the inherent imaging mechanism, resulting in more challenging monocular 3D tasks. Most of the current monocular 3D vehicle detection methods leverage 2D detectors and additional geometric modules, which reduces the efficiency. In this paper, we propose a 3D vehicle localization network CenterLoc3D for r…

We present the first real-time method to capture the full global 3D skeletal pose of a human in a stable, temporally consistent manner using a single RGB camera. Our method combines a new convolutional neural network (CNN) based pose regressor with kinematic skeleton fitting. Our novel fully-convolutional pose formulation regresses 2D and 3D joint positions jointly in real time and does not require tightly cropped input frames. A real-time kinematic skeleton fitting method uses the CNN output to yield temporally stable 3D global pose reconstructions on the basis of a coherent kinematic skeleto…
We present a direct method to calculate a 6DoF pose change of a monocular camera for mobile navigation. The calculated pose is estimated up to a constant unknown scale parameter that is kept constant over the entire reconstruction process. This method allows a direct cal- culation of the metric position and rotation without any necessity to fuse the information in a probabilistic approach over longer frame sequence as it is the case in most currently used VSLAM approaches. The algorithm provides two novel aspects to the field of monocular navigation. It allows a direct pose estimation without …
Current self-supervised monocular depth estimation methods are mostly based on estimating a rigid-body motion representing camera motion. These methods suffer from the well-known scale ambiguity problem in their predictions. We propose DepthP+P, a method that learns to estimate outputs in metric scale by following the traditional planar parallax paradigm. We first align the two frames using a common ground plane which removes the effect of the rotation component in the camera motion. With two neural networks, we predict the depth and the camera translation, which is easier to predict alone com…
Light-weight camera localization in existing maps is essential for vision-based navigation. Currently, visual and visual-inertial odometry (VO\&VIO) techniques are well-developed for state estimation but with inevitable accumulated drifts and pose jumps upon loop closure. To overcome these problems, we propose an efficient monocular camera localization method in prior LiDAR maps using direct 2D-3D line correspondences. To handle the appearance differences and modality gaps between LiDAR point clouds and images, geometric 3D lines are extracted offline from LiDAR maps while robust 2D lines are …

In this paper, we deal with the problem of monocular depth estimation for fisheye cameras in a self-supervised manner. A known issue of self-supervised depth estimation is that it suffers in low-light/over-exposure conditions and in large homogeneous regions. To tackle this issue, we propose a novel ordinal distillation loss that distills the ordinal information from a large teacher model. Such a teacher model, since having been trained on a large amount of diverse data, can capture the depth ordering information well, but lacks in preserving accurate scene geometry. Combined with self-supervi…
Driving requires interacting with road agents and predicting their future behaviour in order to navigate safely. We present FIERY: a probabilistic future prediction model in bird's-eye view from monocular cameras. Our model predicts future instance segmentation and motion of dynamic agents that can be transformed into non-parametric future trajectories. Our approach combines the perception, sensor fusion and prediction components of a traditional autonomous driving stack by estimating bird's-eye-view prediction directly from surround RGB monocular camera inputs. We introduce a free-viewpoint rendering method -- HumanNeRF -- that works on a given monocular video of a human performing complex body motions, e.g. a video from YouTube. Our method enables pausing the video at any frame and rendering the subject from arbitrary new camera viewpoints or even a full 360-degree camera path for that particular frame and body pose. This task is particularly challenging, as it requires synthesizing photorealistic details of the body, as seen from various camera angles that may not exist in the input video, as well as synthesizing fine details such as cloth folds an…

Recovering the absolute metric scale from a monocular camera is a challenging but highly desirable problem for monocular camera-based systems. By using different kinds of cues, various approaches have been proposed for scale estimation, such as camera height, object size etc. In this paper, firstly, we summarize different kinds of scale estimation approaches. Then, we propose a robust divide and conquer the absolute scale estimation method based on the ground plane and camera height by analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of different approaches. By using the estimated scale, an effectiv…

Self-supervised monocular depth estimation has been widely investigated to estimate depth images and relative poses from RGB images. This framework is attractive for researchers because the depth and pose networks can be trained from just time sequence images without the need for the ground truth depth and poses. In this work, we estimate the depth around a robot (360 degree view) using time sequence spherical camera images, from a camera whose parameters are unknown. We propose a learnable axisymmetric camera model which accepts distorted spherical camera images with two fisheye camera images…

In this paper, we propose a novel monocular ray-based 3D (Ray3D) absolute human pose estimation with calibrated camera. Accurate and generalizable absolute 3D human pose estimation from monocular 2D pose input is an ill-posed problem. To address this challenge, we convert the input from pixel space to 3D normalized rays. This conversion makes our approach robust to camera intrinsic parameter changes. To deal with the in-the-wild camera extrinsic parameter variations, Ray3D explicitly takes the camera extrinsic parameters as an input and jointly models the distribution between the 3D pose rays …

Depth estimation is usually ill-posed and ambiguous for monocular camera-based 3D multi-person pose estimation. Since LiDAR can capture accurate depth information in long-range scenes, it can benefit both the global localization of individuals and the 3D pose estimation by providing rich geometry features. Motivated by this, we propose a monocular camera and single LiDAR-based method for 3D multi-person pose estimation in large-scale scenes, which is easy to deploy and insensitive to light. Specifically, we design an effective fusion strategy to take advantage of multi-modal input data, includ…

We present a Deep Learning based system for the twin tasks of localization and obstacle avoidance essential to any mobile robot. Our system learns from conventional geometric SLAM, and outputs, using a single camera, the topological pose of the camera in an environment, and the depth map of obstacles around it. We use a CNN to localize in a topological map, and a conditional VAE to output depth for a camera image, conditional on this topological location estimation. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our monocular localization and depth estimation system on simulated and real datasets.
Monocular scene reconstruction is essential for modern applications such as robotics or autonomous driving. Although stereo methods usually result in better accuracy than monocular methods, they are more expensive and more difficult to calibrate. In this work, we present a novel second order optimal minimum energy filter that jointly estimates the camera motion, the disparity map and also higher order kinematics recursively on a product Lie group containing a novel disparity group. This mathematical framework enables to cope with non-Euclidean state spaces, non-linear observations and high dim…
In this paper, we introduce a moving object detection algorithm for fisheye cameras used in autonomous driving. We reformulate the three commonly used constraints in rectilinear images (epipolar, positive depth and positive height constraints) to spherical coordinates which is invariant to specific camera configuration once the calibration is known. One of the main challenging use case in autonomous driving is to detect parallel moving objects which suffer from motion-parallax ambiguity. To alleviate this, we formulate an additional fourth constraint, called the anti-parallel constraint, which…

Monocular SLAM in deformable scenes will open the way to multiple medical applications like computer-assisted navigation in endoscopy, automatic drug delivery or autonomous robotic surgery. In this paper we propose a novel method to simultaneously track the camera pose and the 3D scene deformation, without any assumption about environment topology or shape. The method uses an illumination-invariant photometric method to track image features and estimates camera motion and deformation combining reprojection error with spatial and temporal regularization of deformations. Our results in simulated…
We propose DFPNet -- an unsupervised, joint learning system for monocular Depth, Optical Flow and egomotion (Camera Pose) estimation from monocular image sequences. Due to the nature of 3D scene geometry these three components are coupled. We leverage this fact to jointly train all the three components in an end-to-end manner. A single composite loss function -- which involves image reconstruction-based loss for depth & optical flow, bidirectional consistency checks and smoothness loss components -- is used to train the network. Using hyperparameter tuning, we are able to reduce the model size…
Understanding ego-motion and surrounding vehicle state is essential to enable automated driving and advanced driving assistance technologies. Typical approaches to solve this problem use fusion of multiple sensors such as LiDAR, camera, and radar to recognize surrounding vehicle state, including position, velocity, and orientation. Such sensing modalities are overly complex and costly for production of personal use vehicles. In this paper, we propose a novel machine learning method to estimate ego-motion and surrounding vehicle state using a single monocular camera. Our approach is based on a …

Depth estimation plays a important role in SLAM, odometry, and autonomous driving. Especially, monocular depth estimation is profitable technology because of its low cost, memory, and computation. However, it is not a sufficiently predicting depth map due to a camera often failing to get a clean image because of light conditions. To solve this problem, various sensor fusion method has been proposed. Even though it is a powerful method, sensor fusion requires expensive sensors, additional memory, and high computational performance. In this paper, we present color image and monochrome image pixe…

Accurate 7DoF prediction of vehicles at an intersection is an important task for assessing potential conflicts between road users. In principle, this could be achieved by a single camera system that is capable of detecting the pose of each vehicle but this would require a large, accurately labelled dataset from which to train the detector. Although large vehicle pose datasets exist (ostensibly developed for autonomous vehicles), we find training on these datasets inadequate. These datasets contain images from a ground level viewpoint, whereas an ideal view for intersection observation would be…
We present GLNet, a self-supervised framework for learning depth, optical flow, camera pose and intrinsic parameters from monocular video - addressing the difficulty of acquiring realistic ground-truth for such tasks. We propose three contributions: 1) we design new loss functions that capture multiple geometric constraints (eg. epipolar geometry) as well as an adaptive photometric loss that supports multiple moving objects, rigid and non-rigid, 2) we extend the model such that it predicts camera intrinsics, making it applicable to uncalibrated video, and 3) we propose several online refinemen…
We present a novel method for simultaneous learning of depth, egomotion, object motion, and camera intrinsics from monocular videos, using only consistency across neighboring video frames as supervision signal. Similarly to prior work, our method learns by applying differentiable warping to frames and comparing the result to adjacent ones, but it provides several improvements: We address occlusions geometrically and differentiably, directly using the depth maps as predicted during training. We introduce randomized layer normalization, a novel powerful regularizer, and we account for object mot…

Synthesizing novel views of dynamic humans from stationary monocular cameras is a specialized but desirable setup. This is particularly attractive as it does not require static scenes, controlled environments, or specialized capture hardware. In contrast to techniques that exploit multi-view observations, the problem of modeling a dynamic scene from a single view is significantly more under-constrained and ill-posed. In this paper, we introduce Neural Motion Consensus Flow (MoCo-Flow), a representation that models dynamic humans in stationary monocular cameras using a 4D continuous time-varian…

Monocular depth estimation has been a popular area of research for several years, especially since self-supervised networks have shown increasingly good results in bridging the gap with supervised and stereo methods. However, these approaches focus their interest on dense 3D reconstruction and sometimes on tiny details that are superfluous for autonomous navigation. In this paper, we propose to address this issue by estimating the navigation map under a quadtree representation. Estimating absolute camera orientations is essential for attitude estimation tasks. An established approach is to first carry out visual odometry (VO) or visual SLAM (V-SLAM), and retrieve the camera orientations (3 DOF) from the camera poses (6 DOF) estimated by VO or V-SLAM. One drawback of this approach, besides the redundancy in estimating full 6 DOF camera poses, is the dependency on estimating a map (3D scene points) jointly with the 6 DOF poses due to the basic constraint on structure-and-motion. To simplify the task of absolute orientation estimation, we formulate the monocular rotatio…

In this work, we demonstrate an approach to computing 3D traffic sign positions without knowing the camera focal lengths, princip…
Modern automotive vehicles are often equipped with a budget commercial rolling shutter camera. These devices often produce distorted images due to the inter-row delay of the camera while capturing the image. Recent methods for monocular rolling shutter motion compensation utilize blur kernel and the straightness property of line segments. However, these methods are limited to handling rotational motion and also are not fast enough to operate in real time. In this paper, we propose a minimal solver for the rolling shutter motion compensation which assumes known vertical direction of the camera.…

This paper deals with motion capture of kinematic chains (e.g. human skeletons) from monocular image sequences taken by uncalibrated cameras. We present a method based on projecting an observation into a kinematic chain space (KCS). Unlike other approaches our method does not require specific camera or object motion and is not relying on training data or previously determined constraints such as particular body lengths. The proposed algorithm is able to reconstruct scenes with…
