This paper is concerned with the design of an augmented state feedback controller for finite-dimensional linear systems with nonlinear observation dynamics. Most of the theoretical results in the area of (optimal) feedback design are based on the assumption that the state is available for measurement. In this paper, we focus on finding a feedback control that avoids state trajectories with undesirable observability properties. In particular, we introduce an optimal control problem that specifically considers an index of observability in the control synthesis. The resulting cost functional is a combination of LQR-like quadratic terms and an index of observability. The main contribution of the paper is presenting a control synthesis procedure that on one hand, provides closed loop asymptotic stability, and addresses the observability of the system--as a transient performance criteria--on the other.
The design of feedback control systems to block observability in a network synchronization model, i.e. to make the dynamics unobservable from measurements at a subset of the network's nodes, is studied. First, a general design algorithm is presented for blocking observability at any specified group of $m$ nodes, by applying state feedback controls at $m+2$ specified actuation nodes. The algorithm is based on a method for eigenstructure assignment, which allows surgical modification of particular eigenvectors to block observability while preserving the remaining open-loop eigenstructure. Next, …
In this paper, a set of sensors is constructed via the pinning observability approach with the help of observability criteria given in [1] and [2], in order to make the given Boolean network (BN) be observable. Given the assumption that system states can be accessible, an efficient pinning control scheme is developed to generate an observable BN by adjusting the network structure rather than just to check system observability. Accordingly, the sensors are constructed, of which the form is consistent with that of state feedback controllers in the designed pinning control. Since this pinning con…
Conventional optimal power flow (OPF) solvers assume full observability of the involved system states. However, in practice, there is a lack of reliable system monitoring devices in the distribution networks. To close the gap between the theoretic algorithm design and practical implementation, this work proposes to solve the OPF problems based on the state estimation (SE) feedback for the distribution networks where only a part of the involved system states are physically measured. The SE feedback increases the observability of the under-measured system and provides more accurate system states…
In this work, we consider the adaptive nonlinear control problem for strict feedback nonlinear systems, where the functions that determine the dynamics of the system are completely unknown. We assume that certain upper bounds for the functions $g_i$s of the system are known. The objective of the control design is to design an adaptive controller that can adapt to changes in the unknown functions that are even abrupt. We propose a novel backstepping memory augmented NN (MANN) adaptive control method for the control of strict feedback non-linear systems. Here, each NN, in the backstepping NN ada…
The control approaches generally resort to the tools from the mathematics, but whether and how the mathematics can benefit from the control approaches is unclear. This paper aims to bring the "control design" idea into the mathematics by providing an observer-based iterative method that focuses on solving linear algebraic equations (LAEs). An inherent relationship is revealed between the problem-solving of LAEs and the design of observer-based control systems, with which the iterative method for solving LAEs is exploited based on the design of the basic state observers. It is shown that all (l…

A supervised learning approach for the solution of large-scale nonlinear stabilization problems is presented. A stabilizing feedback law is trained from a dataset generated from State-dependent Riccati Equation solves. The training phase is enriched by the use gradient information in the loss function, which is weighted through the use of hyperparameters. High-dimensional nonlinear stabilization tests demonstrate that real-time sequential large-scale Algebraic Riccati Equation solves can be substituted by a suitably trained feedforward neural network.
Human-machine interaction (HMI) and human-robot interaction (HRI) can assist structural monitoring and structural dynamics testing in the laboratory and field. In vibratory experimentation, one mode of generating vibration is to use electrodynamic exciters. Manual control is a common way of setting the input of the exciter by the operator. To measure the structural responses to these generated vibrations sensors are attached to the structure. These sensors can be deployed by repeatable robots with high endurance, which require on-the-fly control. If the interface between operators and the cont…
This work explores the nature of augmented importance sampling in safety-constrained model predictive control problems. When operating in a constrained environment, sampling based model predictive control and motion planning typically utilizes penalty functions or expensive optimization based control barrier algorithms to maintain feasibility of forward sampling. In contrast the presented algorithm utilizes discrete embedded barrier states in augmented importance sampling to apply feedback with respect to a nominal state when sampling. We will demonstrate that this approach of safety of discre…
This paper is concerned with the local output feedback stabilization of a nonlinear Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation. The control is located at the boundary of the domain while the measurement is selected as a Neumann trace. This choice of system output requires the study of the system trajectories in $H^2$-norm. Moreover, the choice of the actuation/sensing scheme is discussed and adapted in function of the parameters of the plant in order to avoid the possible loss of controllability/observability property of certain eigenvalues of the underlying operator. This leads in certain cases to a multi…
In this paper we propose a new computational method for designing optimal regulators for high-dimensional nonlinear systems. The proposed approach leverages physics-informed machine learning to solve high-dimensional Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations arising in optimal feedback control. Concretely, we augment linear quadratic regulators with neural networks to handle nonlinearities. We train the augmented models on data generated without discretizing the state space, enabling application to high-dimensional problems. We use the proposed method to design a candidate optimal regulator for an uns…
