The purpose of this paper is to make a further contribution to the Mackey bijection for a complex reductive group G, between the tempered dual of G and the unitary dual of the associated Cartan motion group. We shall construct an embedding of the C*-algebra of the motion group into the reduced C*-algebra of G, and use it to characterize the continuous field of reduced group C*-algebras that is associated to the Mackey bijection. We shall also obtain a new characterization of the Mackey bijection using the same embedding.
When $G$ is a real reductive group and $G_0$ is its Cartan motion group, the Mackey-Higson bijection is a natural one-to-one correspondence between all irreducible tempered representations of $G$ and all irreducible unitary representations of $G_0$. In this short note, we collect some known facts about the topology of the tempered dual $\widetilde{G}$ and that of the unitary dual $\widehat{G_0}$, then verify that the Mackey-Higson bijection $\widetilde{G} \to \widehat{G_0}$ is continuous.
For a connected semisimple Lie group $G$ we describe an explicit collection of correspondences between the admissible dual of $G$ and the admissible dual of the Cartan motion group associated with $G$. We conjecture that each of these correspondences induces an algebraic isomorphism between the admissible duals. The constructed correspondences are defined in terms of algebraic families of Harish-Chandra modules. We prove that the conjecture holds in the case of $SL_2(\mathbb{R})$, and in that case we give an equivalent characterization for the bijections.
Given a real reductive group Lie group $G_\mathbb{R}$, the Mackey analogy is a bijection between the set of irreducible tempered representations of $G_\mathbb{R}$ and the set of irreducible unitary representations of its Cartan motion group. We show that this bijection arises naturally from families of twisted $\mathcal{D}$-modules over the flag variety of $G_\mathbb{R}$.
George Mackey suggested in 1975 that there should be analogies between the irreducible unitary representations of a noncompact reductive Lie group $G$ and those of its Cartan motion group $G_0$ $-$ the semidirect product of a maximal compact subgroup of $G$ and a vector space. He conjectured the existence of a natural one-to-one correspondence between "most" irreducible (tempered) representations of $G$ and "most" irreducible (unitary) representations of $G_0$. We here describe a simple and natural bijection between the tempered duals of both groups, and an extension to a one-to-one correspond…
Alain Connes and Nigel Higson pointed out in the 1990s that the Connes-Kasparov "conjecture"' for the K-theory of reduced groupe $C^\ast$-algebras seemed, in the case of reductive Lie groups, to be a cohomological echo of a conjecture of George Mackey concerning the rigidity of representation theory along the deformation from a reductive Lie group to its Cartan motion group. For complex semisimple groups, Nigel Higson established in 2008 that Mackey's analogy is a real phenomenon and does lead to a simple proof of the Connes-Kasparov isomorphism. We here turn to more general reductive groups a…
Let G be a connected reductive group defined over a finite field with q elements. We prove that the Mackey formula for the Lusztig induction and restriction holds in G whenever q>2 or G does not have a component of type E.
A conjecture by Mackey and Higson claims that there is close relationship between irreducible representations of a real reductive group and those of its Cartan motion group. The case of irreducible tempered unitary representations has been verified recently by Afgoustidis. We study the admissible representations of $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ by considering families of $\D$-modules over its flag varieties. We make a conjecture which gives a geometric understanding of the Makcey-Higson bijection in the general case.
Let $G$ be a finite group and $(K,\mathcal{O},k)$ be a $p$-modular system "large enough". Let $R=\mathcal{O}$ or $k$. There is a bijection between the blocks of the group algebra $RG$ and the central primitive idempotents (the blocks) of the so-called cohomological Mackey algebra $coμ_{R}(G)$. Here, we prove that a so-called permeable derived equivalence between two blocks of group algebras implies the existence of a derived equivalence between the corresponding blocks of cohomological Mackey algebras. In particular, in the context of Broué's abelian defect group conjecture, if two blocks are …
Let $\mathbf{G}$ be a connected reductive algebraic group over $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p$ and let $F : \mathbf{G} \to \mathbf{G}$ be a Frobenius endomorphism endowing $\mathbf{G}$ with an $\mathbb{F}_q$-rational structure. Bonnafé--Michel have shown that the Mackey formula for Deligne--Lusztig induction and restriction holds for the pair $(\mathbf{G},F)$ except in the case where $q = 2$ and $\mathbf{G}$ has a quasi-simple component of type $\sf{E}_6$, $\sf{E}_7$, or $\sf{E}_8$. Using their techniques we show that if $q = 2$ and $Z(\mathbf{G})$ is connected then the Mackey formula holds unless $…
Let $G$ be a finite group and $(K,\mathcal{O},k)$ be a $p$-modular system. Let $R=\mathcal{O}$ or $k$. There is a bijection between the blocks of the group algebra and the blocks of the so-called $p$-local Mackey algebra $μ_{R}^{1}(G)$. Let $b$ be a block of $RG$ with abelian defect group $D$. Let $b'$ be its Brauer correspondant in $N_{G}(D)$. It is conjectured by Broué that the blocks $RGb$ and $RN_{G}(D)b'$ are derived equivalent. Here we look at equivalences between the corresponding blocks of $p$-local Mackey algebras. We prove that an analogue of the Broué's conjecture is true for the $p…
Let G' be a connected reductive group over the complex numbers. We show that the set of conjugacy classes of G' is in natural bijection with the set of two-sided cells associated to a certain algebra.
Let G be a reductive group over an algebraically closed field k of very good characteristic. The Lusztig-Vogan bijection is a bijection between the set of dominant weights for G and the set of irreducible G-equivariant vector bundles on nilpotent orbits, conjectured by Lusztig and Vogan independently, and constructed in full generality by Bezrukavnikov. In characteristic 0, this bijection is related to the theory of 2-sided cells in the affine Weyl group, and plays a key role in the proof of the Humphreys conjecture on support varieties of tilting modules for quantum groups at a root of unity.…
Attached to any reductive Lie group $G$ is a "Cartan motion group" $G_0$ $-$ a Lie group with the same dimension as $G$, but a simpler group structure. A natural one-to-one correspondence between the irreducible tempered representations of $G$ and the unitary irreducible representations of $G_0$, whose existence had been suggested by Mackey in the 1970s, has recently been described by the author. In the present notes, we use the existence of a family of groups interpolating between $G$ and $G_0$ to realize the bijection as a deformation: for every irreducible tempered representation $π$ of G, …
We prove that for every Bushnell-Kutzko type that satisfies a certain rigidity assumption, the equivalence of categories between the corresponding Bernstein component and the category of modules for the Hecke algebra of the type induces a bijection between irreducible unitary representations in the two categories. This is a generalization of the unitarity criterion of Barbasch and Moy for representations with Iwahori fixed vectors.
In this article we review the main results of the earlier papers [I. Penkov, K. Let $(G,G')$ be a reductive dual pair of a symplectic group and an orthogonal group over a finite field of odd characteristic. The Howe correspondence establishes a correspondence between a subset of irreducible characters of $G$ and a subset of irreducible characters of $G'$. The Lusztig correspondence is a bijection between the Lusztig series indexed by the conjugacy class of a semisimple element $s$ in the connected component $(G^*)^0$ of the dual group of $G$ and the set of irreducible unipotent characters of the centralizer of $s$ in $G^*$. In this paper, we prove the commutativity (up to…
In this paper we continue the study of character sheaves on a reductive group G. To each subset of the set of simple reflections in the Weyl group we associate an algebra of the same kind as an Iwahori-Hecke algebra with unequal parameters in terms of parabolic character sheaves. We also prove a Mackey type formula for character sheaves. We define a duality operation for character sheaves. We also prove a quasi-rationality property for character sheaves.
This paper generalizes the classification in a paper of Dimitrov and Penkov of Borel subalgebras of gl_infty. Root-reductive Lie algebras are direct limits of finite-dimensional reductive Lie algebras along inclusions preserving the root spaces with respect to nested Cartan subalgebras. A Borel subalgebra of a root-reductive Lie algebra is by definition a maximal locally solvable subalgebra. The main general result of this paper is that a Borel subalgebra of an infinite-dimensional indecomposable root-reductive Lie algebra is the simultaneous stabilizer of a certain type of generalized flag in…
We use minimal tilting complexes to construct an explicit bijection between the set of thick tensor ideals with the two-out-of-three property in the category of finite-dimensional modules over a quantum group at a root of unity and the set of thick tensor ideals in the subcategory of tilting modules. We also explain why the analogous construction for rational representations of a reductive algebraic group over a field of positive characteristic does not give rise to a bijection.
For an arbitrary finite monoid $M$ and subgroup $K$ of the unit group of $M$, we prove that there is a bijection between irreducible representations of $M$ with nontrivial $K$-fixed space and irreducible representations of $\mathcal{H}_K$, the convolution algebra of $K\times K$-invariant functions from $M$ to $F$, where $F$ is a field of characteristic not dividing $|K|$. When $M$ is reductive and $K = B$ is a Borel subgroup of the group of units, this indirectly provides a connection between irreducible representations of $M$ and those of $F[R]$, where $R$ is the Renner monoid of $M$. We conc…
This paper is a contribution to the general program introduced by Isaacs, Malle and Navarro to prove the McKay conjecture in the representation theory of finite groups. We develop new methods for dealing with simple groups of Lie type in the defining characteristic case. Using a general argument based on the representation theory of connected reductive groups with disconnected center, we show that the inductive McKay condition holds if the Schur multiplier of the simple group has order 2. As a consequence, the simple groups \Orth_{2m+1}(p^n) and PSp_{2m}(p^n) are "good" for p>2 and the simple …
Let A be a character sheaf on a reductive connected group G over an algebraically closed field. Assuming that the characteristic is not bad, we show that for certain conjugacy classes D in G the restriction of A to D is a local system up to shift; we also give a parametrization of unipotent cuspidal character sheaves on G in terms of restrictions to conjugacy classes. Without restriction on characteristic we define canonical bijections from the set of unipotent character sheaves on G (and from the set of unipotent representations of the corresponding split reductive group over a finite field) …
It is known that there is a bijection between dominant weights of a complex reductive Lie group $G$ and the set $\mathcal{N}_{\mathcal{O},r}$ whose elements are of the form $(\mathcal{O},ρ)$, where $\mathcal{O}$ is a nilpotent orbit and $ρ$ is an irreducible, algebraic representation of the stabilizer group $G^e$ of an element $e$ in the nilpotent orbit $\mathcal{O}$. We would like to study the above bijection when $G$ is classical and $ρ$ corresponds to a local system of $\mathcal{O}$. In particular, we will prove Conjecture 3.1 in \cite{AS} and Conjecture 7.4' in \cite{Ac2} in the classical …
We introduce graded Hecke algebras H based on a (possibly disconnected) complex reductive group G and a cuspidal local system L on a unipotent orbit of a Levi subgroup M of G. These generalize the graded Hecke algebras defined and investigated by Lusztig for connected G. We develop the representation theory of the algebras H. obtaining complete and canonical parametrizations of the irreducible, the irreducible tempered and the discrete series representations. All the modules are constructed in terms of perverse sheaves and equivariant homology, relying on work of Lusztig. The parameters come d…
Let K be a non-archimedean local field and let G be a connected reductive K-group which splits over an unramified extension of K. We investigate supercuspidal unipotent representations of the group G(K). We establish a bijection between the set of irreducible G(K)-representations of this kind and the set of cuspidal enhanced L-parameters for G(K), which are trivial on the inertia subgroup of the Weil group of K. The bijection is characterized by a few simple equivariance properties and a comparison of formal degrees of representations with adjoint $γ$-factors of L-parameters. This can be regar…
In this paper we discuss some of Springer's work on unipotent elements in a reductive groups and on representations of Weyl groups. Among the topics considered are Springer's bijection from the unipotent variety to the nilpotent variety, Springer's example of nonrationality of certain representations of the Hecke algebras associated to a Weyl group and the Springer representation of the Weyl group associated to a unipotent element.
In 1979, Lusztig proposed a cohomological construction of supercuspidal representations of reductive $p$-adic groups, analogous to Deligne-Lusztig theory for finite reductive groups. In this paper we establish a new instance of Lusztig's program. Precisely, let $X$ be the $p$-adic Deligne-Lusztig ind-scheme associated to a division algebra $D$ of invariant k/n over a non-Archimedean local field $K$. We study its homology groups by establishing a Deligne-Lusztig theory for families of finite unipotent groups that arise as subquotients of $D^\times$. The homology of $X$ induces a natural corresp…
A $GL_d$-pseudocharacter is a function from a group $Γ$ to a ring $k$ satisfying polynomial relations which make it "look like" the character of a representation. When $k$ is an algebraically closed field, Taylor proved that $GL_d$-pseudocharacters of $Γ$ are the same as degree-$d$ characters of $Γ$ with values in $k$, hence are in bijection with equivalence classes of semisimple representations $Γ\rightarrow GL_d(k)$. Recently, V. Lafforgue generalized this result by showing that, for any connected reductive group $H$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic 0 and for any grou…
The description of irreducible representations of a group G can be seen as a question in harmonic analysis; namely, decomposing a suitable space of functions on G into irreducibles for the action of G x G by left and right multiplication. For a split p-adic reductive group G over a local non-archimedean field, unramified irreducible smooth representations are in bijection with semisimple conjugacy classes in the ``Langlands dual'' group. We generalize this description to an arbitrary spherical variety X of G as follows: Irreducible unramified quotients of the space $C_c^\infty(X)$ are in natur…
Let $G_\mathbb R$ be a real reductive group and let $X$ be the corresponding complex symmetric variety under the Cartan bijection. We construct a stratified homeomorphism between the based polynomial arc group of $G_\mathbb R$ and the based polynomial arc space of $X$. We also prove a multi-point version where we replace arcs by moduli spaces of quasi-maps from the projective line $\mathbb P^1$ to $G_\mathbb R$ and $X$. The key ingredients in the proof include: (i) a multi-point generalization of the ``Gram-Schmidt" factorization of loop groups, and (ii) a nodal degeneration of moduli spaces o…
To a torus T over a local field F and a subset of its character module subject to certain properties, we associate a canonical double cover of the topological group T(F). We further associate an L-group to this double cover and establish a natural bijection between L-parameters valued in this L-group and genuine characters of the double cover. When T is a maximal torus of a connected reductive group G, we show that there is a canonical L-embedding from the L-group of the double cover of T to the L-group of G. This leads to a canonical factorization of Langlands parameters. We associate to a ge…
We describe the image, under the local Langlands correspondence for tori, of the characters of a torus which are trivial on its Iwahori subgroup. Let $k$ be a non-archimedian local field. Let $\boldsymbol{G}$ be a connected reductive group defined over $k$, which is quasi-split and split over a tamely ramified extension. Let $K$ be a special maximal parahoric subgroup of $\boldsymbol{G}(k)$. To the class of representations of $\boldsymbol{G}(k)$, having a non-zero vector fixed under $K$, we establish a bijection, in a natural way, with the twisted semi-simple conjugacy classes of the inertia f…

The set of weights of a finite-dimensional representation of a reductive Lie algebra has a natural poset structure ("weight poset"). Studying certain combinatorial problems related to antichains in weight posets, we realised that the best setting is provided by the representations associated with $\mathbb Z$-gradings of simple Lie algebras (arXiv: math.CO 1411.7683). If $\mathfrak g$ is a simple Lie algebra, then a $\mathbb Z$-grading of $\mathfrak g$ induces a $\mathbb Z$-grading of the corresponding root system $Δ$. In this article, we elaborate on a general theory of lower ideals (or antich…
