The NGC 1052 group, and in particular the discovery of two ultra diffuse galaxies with very low internal velocity dispersions, has been the subject of much attention recently. Here we present radial velocities for a sample of 77 globular clusters associated with NGC 1052 obtained on the Keck telescope. Their mean velocity and velocity dispersion are consistent with that of the host galaxy. Using a simple tracer mass estimator, we infer the enclosed dynamical mass and dark matter fraction of NGC 1052. Extrapolating our measurements with an NFW mass profile we infer a total halo mass of 6.2 ($\pm$0.2) $\times$ 10$^{12}$ M$_{\odot}$. This mass is fully consistent with that expected from the stellar mass--halo mass relation, suggesting that NGC 1052 has a normal dark matter halo mass (i.e. it is not deficient in dark matter in contrast to two ultra diffuse galaxies in the group). We present a phase space diagram showing the galaxies that lie within the projected virial radius (390 kpc) of NGC 1052. Finally, we briefly discuss the two dark matter deficient galaxies (NGC 1052--DF and DF4) and consider whether MOND can account for their low observed internal velocity dispersions.
We investigate the stellar kinematics and line strength indices in the outer halos of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in the Coma cluster to obtain the outer halo V_rot and sigma profiles and to derive constraints on the formation history of these objects. Methods: We analyzed absorption lines in deep, medium-resolution, long-slit spectra in the wavelength range ~ 4500 - 5900 Angstrom, out to ~50 kpc for NGC 4874 and ~65 kpc for NGC 4889, probing regions with a surface brightness down to mu_R ~24 mag/arcsec^2. Results: These data provide stellar velocity and velocity dispersion profiles alon…
We propose that the observed stellar halo around the globular cluster (GC) NGC 1851 is evidence for its formation in the central region of its defunct host dwarf galaxy. We numerically investigate the long-term dynamical evolution of a nucleated dwarf galaxy embedded in a massive dark matter halo under the strong tidal field of the Galaxy. The dwarf galaxy is assumed to have a stellar nucleus (or a nuclear star cluster) that could be the progenitor for NGC 1851. We find that although the dark matter halo and the stellar envelope of the host dwarf of NGC 1851 can be almost completely stripped d…
An important open question is the relation between intracluster light and the halos of central galaxies in galaxy clusters. Here we report results from an on going project with the aim to characterize the dynamical state in the core of the Hydra I (Abell 1060) cluster around NGC 3311. Methods: We analyze deep long-slit absorption line spectra reaching out to ~25 kpc in the halo of NGC 3311. Results: We find a very steep increase in the velocity dispersion profile from a central sigma_0=150 km/s to sigma_out ~450 km/s at R ~ 12 kpc. Farther out, to ~25 kpc, sigma appears to be constant at this …
We use Hubble Space Telescope imaging to show that the nearby dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 4449 has an unusual abundance of luminous red star clusters. Joint constraints from integrated photometry, low-resolution spectroscopy, dynamical mass-to-light ratios, and resolved color-magnitude diagrams provide evidence that some of these clusters are old globular clusters. Spectroscopic data for two massive clusters suggest intermediate metallicities ([Fe/H] ~ -1) and subsolar Mg enhancement ([Mg/Fe] ~ -0.1 to -0.2). One of these clusters may be the nucleus of a tidally disrupting dwarf galaxy; the oth…
The conjecture that the ancient globular clusters (GCs) formed at the center of their own dark matter halos was first proposed by Peebles (1984), and has recently been revived to explain the puzzling abundance patterns observed within many GCs. In this paper we demonstrate that the outer stellar density profile of isolated GCs is very sensitive to the presence of an extended dark halo. The GCs NGC 2419, located at 90 kpc from the center of our Galaxy, and MGC1, located at ~200 kpc from the center of M31, are ideal laboratories for testing the scenario that GCs formed at the centers of massive …
We present images of the planetary nebulae (PNe) NGC 7354 and NGC 3242 in four mid-infrared (MIR) photometric bands centred at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8 and 8.0 microns; the results of observations undertaken using the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST). The resulting images show the presence of a halo and rings in NGC 3242, as previously observed through narrow band imaging at visual wavelengths, as well as evidence for a comparable halo and ring system in NGC 7354. This is the first time that a halo and rings have been observed in the latter source. We have analysed the formation of halos as a result of radi…
We have obtained Magellan/IMACS and HST/ACS imaging data that resolve red giant branch stars in the stellar halo of the starburst galaxy NGC 253. The HST data cover a small area, and allow us to accurately interpret the ground-based data, which cover 30% of the halo to a distance of 30 kpc, allowing us to make detailed quantitative measurements of the global properties and structure of a stellar halo outside of the Local Group. The geometry of the halo is significantly flattened in the same sense as the disk, with a projected axis ratio of b/a ~ 0.35 +/- 0.1. The total stellar mass of the halo…
We present 21-cm observations and models of the neutral hydrogen in NGC 4565, a nearby, edge-on spiral galaxy, as part of the Westerbork Hydrogen Accretion in LOcal GAlaxieS (HALOGAS) survey. These models provide insight concerning both the morphology and kinematics of HI above, as well as within, the disk. NGC 4565 exhibits a distinctly warped and asymmetric disk with a flaring layer. Our modeling provides no evidence for a massive, extended HI halo. We see evidence for a bar and associated radial motions. Additionally, there are indications of radial motions within the disk, possibly associa…
With the aim to determine the spatial distribution of dark matter, we investigate the polar ring galaxy NGC 4262. We used the stellar kinematics data for the central galaxy obtained from optical spectroscopy together with information about the kinematics of the neutral hydrogen for polar component. It was shown that NGC 4262 is the classic polar ring galaxy case with the relative angle of $88^{\circ}$ between components. From simulations of the central galaxy and ring kinematics we found that the shape of the dark matter distribution varies strongly with the radius. Namely, the dark matter hal…
We present Suzaku off-center observations of two poor galaxy groups, NGC 3402 and NGC 5129, with temperatures below 1 keV. Through spectral decomposition, we measured their surface brightnesses and temperatures out to 530 and 1430 times the critical density of the universe for NGC 3402 and NGC 5129, respectively. These quantities are consistent with extrapolations from existing inner measurements of the two groups. With the refined bolometric X-ray luminosities, both groups prefer $L_X$-$T$ relations without a break in the group regime. Furthermore, we have determined the electron number densi…
Stellar streams provide unique probes of galactic potentials, with the longer streams normally providing the cleaner measurements. In this paper, we show an example of a short tidal stream that is particularly sensitive to the shape of the Milky Way's dark matter halo: the globular cluster tidal stream NGC 5466. This stream has an interesting deviation from a smooth orbit at its western edge. We show that such a deviation favours an underlying oblate or triaxial halo (irrespective of plausible variations in the Milky Way disc properties and the specific halo parametrisation chosen); spherical …
The origin of the Galactic halo stellar structure known as the Monoceros ring is still under debate. In this work, we study that halo substructure using deep CFHT wide-field photometry obtained for the globular clusters NGC2419 and Koposov2, where the presence of Monoceros becomes significant because of their coincident projected position. Using Sloan Digital Sky Survey photometry and spectroscopy in the area surrounding these globulars and beyond, where the same Monoceros population is detected, we conclude that a second feature, not likely to be associated with Milky Way disk stars along the…
We studied the structure of two old open clusters, NGC 1245 and NGC 2506, from a wide and deep VI photometry data acquired using the CFH12K CCD camera at CFHT. We devised a new method for assigning cluster membership probability to individual stars using both spatial positions and positions in the colour-magnitude diagram. From analyses of the luminosity functions at several cluster-centric radii and the radial surface density profiles derived from stars with different luminosity ranges, we found that the two clusters are dynamically relaxed to drive significant mass segregation and evaporatio…
A second galaxy ``missing dark matter" (NGC1052-DF4) has been recently reported. Here we show, using the location of the Tip of the Red Giant Branch (TRGB), that the distance to this galaxy is 14.2+-0.7 Mpc. This locates the galaxy 6 Mpc closer than previously determined. We also analyse the distances to the brightest galaxies in the field-of-view (FOV) of NGC1052. We find this field is populated by two groups of galaxies in projection: one dominated by NGC1052 and NGC1047 at ~19 Mpc and another group containing NGC1042 and NGC1035 (as well as [KKS2000]04 and NGC1052-DF4) at ~13.5 Mpc. At a di…
Context. We investigate the stellar population and the origin of diffuse light around brightest cluster galaxies. Aims. We study the stellar population of the dynamically hot stellar halo of NGC 3311, the brightest galaxy in the Hydra I cluster, and that of photometric substructures in the diffuse light to constrain the origin of these components. Methods. We analyze absorption lines in medium-resolution, long-slit spectra in the wavelength range 4800-5800 angstrom obtained with FORS2 at the Very Large Telescope. We measure the equivalent width of Lick indices out to 20 kpc from the center of …
We study the stellar population far into the halo of one of the two brightest galaxies in the Coma cluster, NGC 4889, based on deep medium resolution spectroscopy with FOCAS at the Subaru 8.2m telescope. We fit single stellar population models to the measured line-strength (Lick) indices (Hbeta, Mgb, [MgFe]' and <Fe>). Combining with literature data, we construct radial profiles of metallicity, [alpha/Fe] element abundance ratio and age for NGC 4889, from the center out to ~60 kpc (~4Re). We find evidence for different chemical and star formation histories for stars inside and outside 1.2Re = …
We examine 11 XMM-Newton observations of the giant spiral galaxy NGC 1961, allowing us to study the hot gaseous halo of a spiral galaxy in unprecedented detail. We perform a spatial and a spectral analysis; with the former, the hot halo is detected to at least 80 kpc and with the latter its properties can be measured in detail up to 42 kpc. We find evidence for a negative gradient in the temperature profile as is common for elliptical galaxies. We measure a rough metallicity profile, which is consistent with being flat at $Z \sim 0.2 Z_{\odot}$. Converting to this metallicity, the deprojected …
The Hobby-Eberly Telescope is used to measure the velocity dispersion profile of the nearest prototypical cD galaxy, NGC 6166 in cluster Abell 2199. We also present surface photometry from many telescopes. We confirm the defining feature of a cD -- a halo of stars that fills the cluster center and that is controlled by cluster gravity, not by the central galaxy. The velocity dispersion of NGC 6166 rises from 300 km/s at the center to 865 +- 58 km/s at 100 arcsec radius in the halo. This shows for the first time that the dispersion rises all the way to the cluster value, 819 +- 32 km/s. We find…
We report on the detection of a stellar halo around NGC 1560, a 10^9 Mo spiral galaxy member of the Maffei group. We obtained deep images in the r and i bands using the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias in a field centered at ~ 3.7 arcmin (projected distance of 3.5 kpc) from the center of this galaxy. The luminosity function and the CMD show a clear excess of stars with respect to the expected foreground level at magnitudes fainter than the RGB tip at the distance of NGC 1560. The color of the halo stars implies a metallicity of Z ~ Zo/50, while their counts correspond to a stellar mass of ~ 10^7…
We used VIMOS on VLT to perform $V$ and $I$ band imaging of the outermost halo of NGC 5128 / Centaurus A ($(m-M)_0=27.91\pm0.08$), 65 kpc from the galaxy's center and along the major axis. The stellar population has been resolved to $I_0 \approx 27$ with a $50\%$ completeness limit of $I_0 = 24.7$, well below the tip of the red-giant branch (TRGB), which is seen at $I_0 \approx 23.9$. The surface density of NGC 5128 halo stars in our fields was sufficiently low that dim, unresolved background galaxies were a major contaminant in the source counts. We isolated a clean sample of red-giant-branch…
Using the Continuum HAloes in Nearby Galaxies - an EVLA Survey (CHANG-ES) radio continuum data from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) in two frequency bands (C-band, L-band), we analyzed the radio properties, including polarization and the transport processes of the CR electrons (CREs), in the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 4013. Supplementary LOw-Frequency ARray (LOFAR) data at 150MHz are used to study the low-frequency properties of this galaxy and X-ray (Chandra, XMM-Newton) data are used to investigate the central region. The central point source dominates the radio continuum in both CH…
The stellar contents of the open clusters King 12, NGC 7788, and NGC 7790 are investigated using MegaCam images. Comparisons with isochrones yield an age < 20 Myr for King 12, 20--40 Myr for NGC 7788, and 60 -- 80 Myr for NGC 7790 based on the properties of stars near the main sequence turn-off (MSTO) in each cluster. The reddening of NGC 7788 is much larger than previously estimated. The luminosity functions (LFs) of King 12 and NGC 7788 show breaks that are attributed to the onset of pre-main sequence (PMS) objects, and comparisons with models of PMS evolution yield ages that are consistent …
Using imaging that shows four magnitudes of main sequence stars, we have discovered that the Galactic globular cluster NGC 1851 is surrounded by a halo that is visible from the tidal radius of 700 arcsec (41 pc) to more than 4500 arcsec (>250 pc). This halo is symmetric and falls in density as a power law of $r^{-1.24}$. It contains approximately 0.1% of the dynamical mass of NGC 1851. There is no evidence for tidal tails. Current models of globular cluster evolution do not explain this feature, although simulations of tidal influences on dwarf spheroidal galaxies qualitatively mimic these res…
NGC 891 is a nearby edge-on galaxy that is similar to the Milky Way and has a hot X-ray emitting halo that could arise from accretion, a galactic fountain, or a combination of the two. The metallicity of the gas can help distinguish between these models, and here we report on results that use 138 ks of archival Chandra data and 92 ks of new XMM-Newton data to measure the temperature and metallicity of the hot halo of the galaxy. We find good fits for a thermal model with kT ~ 0.2 keV and Z ~ 0.1 solar, and rule out solar metallicity to more than 99% confidence. This result suggests accretion f…
NGC 2419 is a massive outer halo Galactic globular cluster whose stars have previously been shown to have somewhat peculiar abundance patterns. We have observed seven luminous giants that are members of NGC 2419 with Keck/HIRES at reasonable SNR. One of these giants is very peculiar, with an extremely low [Mg/Fe] and high [K/Fe] but normal abundances of most other elements. The abundance pattern does not match the nucleosynthetic yields of any supernova model. The other six stars show abundance ratios typical of inner halo Galactic globular clusters, represented here by a sample of giants in t…
NGC 4631 is an interacting galaxy which exhibits one of the largest gaseous halos observed among edge-on galaxies. We aim to examine the synchrotron and polarization properties of its disk and halo emission with new radio continuum data. Radio continuum observations of NGC 4631 were performed with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array at C-band (5.99 GHz) in the C & D array configurations, and at L-band (1.57 GHz) in the B, C, & D array configurations. The Rotation Measure Synthesis algorithm was utilized to derive the polarization properties. We detected linearly polarized emission at C-band an…
In order to clarify whether NGC 4631 has a unique magnetic field configuration in the central region along its disk, we present high-resolution Faraday-corrected polarization data. Radio continuum observations of NGC 4631 at 4.85 GHz were performed with the VLA. In addition, observations were made with the Effelsberg telescope at 4.85 GHz and at 8.35 GHz. These were analyzed together with archival VLA-data at 8.35 GHz. The vertical scale heights in NGC 4631 vary significantly in different regions within the galaxy and their mean values at 4.85 GHz are with 2.3 kpc (370 pc) for the thick (thin)…
NGC 4631 is an interacting galaxy that exhibits one of the largest, gaseous halos observed among edge-on galaxies. We aim to examine the synchrotron and cosmic-ray propagation properties of its disk and halo emission with new radio continuum data. Radio continuum observations of NGC 4631 were performed with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array at C-band (5.99 GHz) in the C and D array configurations, and at L-band (1.57 GHz) in the B, C, and D array configurations. Complementary observations of NGC 4631 with the Effelsberg telescope were performed at 1.42 and 4.85 GHz. The interferometric total…
Stellar metallicity distribution functions (MDF) have been measured for resolved stellar populations in the outer halos of many galaxies in nearby groups. Among them, the MDF of NGC 5128, the central giant elliptical in the Centaurus group, provides essential constraints for theories of massive galaxy formation and hierarchical assembly. To investigate the formation and chemical evolution history of the outer halo of giant elliptical galaxies, we examine the chemical properties of three zoom-in high resolution cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of an NGC 5128-like giant elliptical galaxy …
We present deep far-infrared observations of the nearby edge-on galaxy NGC 891 obtained with the Herschel Space Observatory and the Spitzer Space Telescope. The maps confirm the detection of thermal emission from the inner circumgalactic medium (halo) and spatially resolve a dusty superbubble and a dust spur (filament). The dust temperature of the halo component is lower than that of the disk but increases across a region of diameter ~8.0 kpc extending at least 7.7 kpc vertically from one side of the disk, a region we call a superbubble because of its association with thermal X-ray emission an…
[Abrigded] We have started a new deep, multi-imaging survey of the Fornax cluster, dubbed Fornax Deep Survey (FDS), at the VLT Survey Telescope. In this paper we present the deep photometry inside two square degrees around the bright galaxy NGC1399 in the core of the cluster. We found a very extended and diffuse envelope surrounding the luminous galaxy NGC1399: we map the surface brightness out to 33 arcmin (~ 192 kpc) from the galaxy center and down to about 31 mag/arcsec^2 in the g band. The deep photometry allows us to detect a faint stellar bridge in the intracluster region between NGC1399…
NGC 1851 is an intriguing Galactic globular cluster, with multiple stellar evolutionary sequences, light and heavy element abundance variations and indications of a surrounding stellar halo. We present the first results of a spectroscopic study of red giant stars within and outside of the tidal radius of this cluster. Our results identify nine probable new cluster members (inside the tidal radius) with heliocentric radial velocities consistent with that of NGC 1851. We also identify, based on their radial velocities, four probable extratidal cluster halo stars at distances up to ~3.1 times the…
We present deep HI imaging of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 4414, taken as part of the Westerbork HALOGAS (Hydrogen Accretion in LOcal GAlaxieS) survey. The observations show that NGC 4414 can be characterized by a regularly rotating inner HI disk, and a more disturbed outer disk. Modeling of the kinematics shows that the outer disk is best described by a U-shaped warp. Deep optical imaging also reveals the presence of a low surface brightness stellar shell, indicating a minor interaction with a dwarf galaxy at some stage in the past. Modeling of the inner disk suggests that about 4 percent of …
It has been suggested that the dark matter-deficient galaxies NGC1052-DF2 and NGC1052-DF4 might not be members of the NGC1052 group but in the foreground at $\sim 13$ Mpc, and satellites of the bright spiral galaxy NGC1042. We previously showed that the CMDs of the galaxies are inconsistent with this hypothesis, and derived distances of 19-20 Mpc from their surface brightness fluctuation signals. Here we note that NGC1042 is almost certainly a member of the NGC1052 group as well, based on its radial velocity, the HI distribution in the NGC1052/NGC1042 system, and the Tully-Fisher relation.
In previous, very deep, optical images of NGC 7293 both a feature that has the morphology of a bow-shock and one with that of a jet were discovered in the faint 40 arcmin diameter halo of the nebula. Spatially resolved longslit profiles of the Halpha and [N II] 6548, 6584 A nebular emission lines from both features have now been obtained. The bow-shaped feature has been found to have Halpha radial velocities close to the systemic heliocentric radial velocity, -27 km/s, of NGC 7293 and is faint in the [N II] 6548, 6584 A emission lines. Furthermore, the full width of these profiles matches the …
We report observations of five dwarf galaxies in the vicinity of the luminous S0 galaxy NGC 3115 performed with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope. Their distances determined via the Tip of the Red Giant Branch are: 10.05 Mpc (UGCA 193), 9.95 Mpc (KKSG 17), 10.13 Mpc (2MASX-J0957-0915), 10.42 Mpc (2dFGRS-TGN218Z179) and 11.01 Mpc (KKSG 19). With their typical distance error of about 0.75 Mpc all the five dwarfs are consistent to be true satellites of the host galaxy NGC 3115 (10.2$\pm$0.2 Mpc). Using the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys we also found 5 new probable dwarf …
We report the results of a survey of the region within 40 arcmin of NGC 891, a nearby nearly perfectly edge-on spiral galaxy. Candidate "non-stars" with diameters greater than 15 arcsec were selected from the GSC 2.3.2 catalog and cross-comparison of observations in several bands using archived \galex, DSS2, WISE, and 2MASS images identified contaminating stars, artifacts and background galaxies, all of which were excluded. The resulting 71 galaxies, many of which were previously uncataloged, comprise a size limited survey of the region. A majority of the galaxies are in the background of NGC …
We report for the first time on the chemical composition of the halo cluster NGC 5897 (R=12.5 kpc), based on chemical abundance ratios for 27 alpha-, iron-peak, and neutron-capture elements in seven red giants. From our high-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra obtained with the Magellan/MIKE spectrograph, we find a mean iron abundance from the neutral species of [Fe/H] = -2.04 +/- 0.01 (stat.) +/- 0.15 (sys.), which is more metal-poor than implied by previous photometric and low-resolution spectroscopic studies. NGC 5897 is alpha-enhanced (to 0.34 +/- 0.01 dex) and shows Fe-peak element r…
We present results of a joint \textit{Chandra}/\textit{XMM-Newton} analysis of the early-type galaxies NGC 4649 and NGC 5846 aimed at investigating differences between mass profiles derived from X-ray data and those from optical data, to probe the state of the hot ISM in these galaxies. If the hot ISM is at a given radius in hydrostatic equilibrium (HE) the X-ray data can be used to measure the total enclosed mass of the galaxy. Differences from optically-derived mass distributions therefore yield information about departures from HE in the hot halos. The X-ray mass profiles in different angul…
Rotation measure (RM) synthesis maps of NGC 4631 show remarkable sign reversals with distance from the minor axis in the northern halo of the galaxy on kpc scales. To explain this new phenomenon, we solve the dynamo equations under the assumption of scale invariance and search for rotating logarithmic spiral solutions. Solutions for velocity fields representing accretion onto the disk, outflow from the disk, and rotation-only in the disk are found that produce RM with reversing signs viewed edge-on. Model RM maps are created for a variety of input parameters using a Faraday screen and are scal…
To further understand the origins of and physical processes operating in extra-planar gas, we present observations and kinematic models of HI in the two nearby, edge-on spiral galaxies NGC 3044 and NGC 4302. We model NGC 3044 as a single, thick disk. Substantial amounts of extra-planar HI are also detected. We detect a decrease in rotation speed with height (a lag) that shallows radially, reaching zero at approximately R25. The large-scale kinematic asymmetry of the approaching and receding halves suggests a recent disturbance. The kinematics and morphology of NGC 4302, a Virgo Cluster member,…
The metallicity of galactic gaseous halos provides insights into accretion and feedback of galaxies. The nearby edge-on galaxy NGC 891 has a multi-component gaseous halo and a background AGN (LQAC 035+042 003) projected 5 kpc above the disk near the minor axis. Against the UV continuum of this AGN, we detect lines from 13 ions associated with NGC 891 in new {\it HST}/COS spectra. Most of the absorption is from the warm ionized gas with $\log T=4.22\pm0.04$, $\log n_{\rm H}=-1.26\pm0.51$, and $\log N_{\rm H}=20.81\pm 0.20$. The metallicity of volatile elements (i.e., C, N, and S) is about half …
Information on the star-formation histories of cD galaxies and their extended stellar haloes lie in their spectra. Therefore, to determine whether these structures evolved together or through a two-phase formation, we need to spectroscopically separate the light from each component. We present a pilot study to use BUDDI to fit and extract the spectra of the cD galaxy NGC 3311 and its halo in an Integral Field Spectroscopy datacube, and carry out a simple stellar populations analysis to study their star-formation histories. Using MUSE data, we were able to isolate the light of the galaxy and it…
We present the resolved stellar populations in the inner and outer halo of the nearby lenticular galaxy NGC~3115. Using deep HST observations, we analyze stars two magnitudes fainter than the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB). We study three fields along the minor axis of this galaxy, 19, 37 and 54 kpc from its center -- corresponding to 7, 14, 21 effective radii (r_{e}). Even at these large galactocentric distances, all of the fields are dominated by a relatively enriched population, with the main peak in the metallicity distribution decreasing with radius from [Z/H] ~ -0.5 to -0.65. The fra…
We use recent very extended HI kinematics (out to 48 kpc) along with previous H$α$ kinematics of the spiral galaxy NGC 3198 in order to derive its distribution of dark matter (DM). First, we used a chi-square method to model the rotation curve (RC) of this galaxy in terms of different profiles of its DM distribution: the universal rotation curve (URC) mass model (stellar disk $+$ Burkert halo $+$ gaseous disk), the NFW mass model (stellar disk $+$ NFW halo $+$ gaseous disk) and the baryon $Λ$CDM mass model (stellar disk $+$ NFW halo modified by baryonic physics $+$ gaseous disk). Second, to de…
We report the discovery of an extended halo (40' in diameter) around the planetary nebula NGC7293 (the Helix Nebula) observed in 12micron band from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer all-sky survey. The mid-infrared halo has an axisymmetric structure with a sharp boundary to the northeast and a more diffuse boundary to the southwest, suggesting an interaction between the stellar wind and the interstellar medium (ISM). The symmetry axis of the halo is well aligned with that of a northeast arc, suggesting that the two structures are physically associated. We have attempted to fit the observ…
Using spectra taken with the AAOmega spectrograph, we measure the radial velocities of over 100 stars, many of which are intermediate age carbon stars, in the direction of the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822. Kinematic analysis suggests that the carbon stars in the sample are associated with NGC 6822, and estimates of its radial velocity and galactic rotation are made from a star-by-star analysis of its carbon star population. We calculate a heliocentric radial velocity for NGC 6822 of $-51\pm3$ \kms\ and show that the population rotates with a mean rotation speed of $11.2\pm2.1$ \kms\ at a me…
The tidal disruption of the Sagittarius dwarf Spheroidal galaxy (Sgr dSph) is producing the most prominent substructure in the Milky Way (MW) halo, the Sagittarius Stream. Aside from field stars, the Sgr dSph is suspected to have lost a number of globular clusters (GC). Many Galactic GC are suspected to have originated in the Sgr dSph. While for some candidates an origin in the Sgr dSph has been confirmed due to chemical similarities, others exist whose chemical composition has never been investigated. NGC 5053 and NGC 5634 are two among these scarcely studied Sgr dSph candidate-member cluster…
We investigate the compact, early-type galaxy NGC 1281 with integral field unit observations to map the stellar LOSVD out to 5 effective radii and construct orbit-based dynamical models to constrain its dark and luminous matter content. Under the assumption of mass-follows-light, the H-band stellar mass-to-light ratio (M/L) is Υ = 2.7(+-0.1) Υ_{sun}, higher than expected from our stellar population synthesis fits with either a canonical Kroupa (Υ = 1.3 Υ_{sun}) or Salpeter (Υ = 1.7 Υ_{sun}) stellar initial mass function. Such models also cannot reproduce the details of the LOSVD. Models with a…
NGC 2438 is a classical multiple shell or halo planetary nebula (PN). Its central star and the main nebula are well studied. Also it was target of various hydrodynamic simulations (Corradi et al. 2000). This initiated a discussion whether the haloes are mainly containing recombined gas (Schoenberner et al. 2002), or if they are still ionized (Armsdorfer et al. 2003). An analysis of narrow-band images and long slit spectra at multiple slit positions was done to obtain a deeper look on morphological details and the properties of the outer shell and halo. For this work there was data available fr…

Recent analyses of the Gaia data have identified diffuse stellar populations surrounding nearby open clusters. It is important to verify that these "halos", "tails", and "strings" are of similar ages and compositions as stars in the denser part of the cluster. We present an analysis of NGC 2516 ($\approx$150 Myr), which has a classical tidal radius of 10 pc and an apparent halo of stars spanning 500 pc ($20^\circ$ on-sky). Combining photometry from Gaia, rotation periods from TESS, and lithium measurements from Gaia-ESO and GALAH, we find that the halo of NGC 2516 is the same age as the cluste…
We derive astrophysical and structural parameters of open clusters NGC 1245 and NGC 2099 from 2MASS JHKs and Gaia DR2 photometric / astrometric data bases. Their likely members have been determined from Gaia DR2 proper motion data. Our E(B-V) values (2MASS) are slightly smaller than the literature values, whereas our E(B-V) values (Gaia DR2) agree with the literature within the uncertainties. Their distance moduli/distances and ages are in good coincident with the literature. NGC 1245 has steep negative core mass function slope (MFs) (χ_core=-1.24). Its halo (χ_halo=+0.78) and overall (χ_overa…
Thanks to deep UV observations with GALEX and Swift, diffuse UV haloes have recently been discovered around galaxies. Based on UV-optical colours, it has been advocated that the UV haloes around spiral galaxies are due to UV radiation emitted from the disc and scattered off dust grains at high latitudes. Detailed UV radiative transfer models that take into account scattering and absorption can explain the morphology of the UV haloes, and they require the presence of an additional thick dust disc next the to traditional thin disc for half of the galaxies in their sample. We test whether such an…
We present imaging and spectroscopy of NGC 40 acquired using the Spitzer Space Telescope (Spitzer), and the Infrared Space observatory (ISO). These are used to investigate the nature of emission from the central nebular shell, from the nebular halo, and from the associated circumnebular rings. It is pointed out that a variety of mechanisms may contribute to the mid-infrared (MIR) fluxes, and there is evidence for a cool dust continuum, strong ionic transitions, and appreciable emission by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Prior observations at shorter wavelengths also indicate the prese…
