A semigroup is completely simple if it has no proper ideals and contains a primitive idempotent. We say that a completely simple semigroup $S$ is a homogeneous completely simple semigroup if any isomorphism between finitely generated completely simple subsemigroups of $S$ extends to an automorphism of $S$. Motivated by the study of homogeneous completely regular semigroups, we obtain a complete classification of homogeneous completely simple semigroups, modulo the group case. As a consequence, all finite regular homogeneous semigroups are described, thus extending the work of Cherlin on homogeneous finite groups.
Lee and Kwon [12] defined an ordered semigroup S to be completely regular if a 2 (a2Sa2] for every a 2 S. We characterize every completely regular ordered semigroup as a union of t-simple subsemigroups, and every Clifford ordered semigroup as a complete semilattice of t-simple subsemigroups. Green's Theorem for the completely regular ordered semigroups has been established. In an ordered semigroup S, we call an element e an ordered idempotent if it satisfies e ? e2. Different characterizations of the regular, completely regular and Clifford ordered semigroups are done by their ordered idempote…
Here we characterize regular and completely regular ordered semigroups by their minimal bi-ideals. A minimal bi-ideal is expressed as a product of a minimal right ideal and a minimal left ideal. Furthermore, we show that every bi-ideal in a completely regular ordered semigroup is minimal and hence a regular ordered semigroup S is completely regular if and only if S is union its of minimal bi-ideals.
The aim of this paper is characterizing right subdirectly irreducible completely 0-simple semigroups. We prove that such semigroups are indeed groups with least nontrivial subgroups. On the other hand we prove that right irreducible completely 0-simple semigroups are groups for which nontrivial subgroups have nontrivial intersection. Ultimately, we characterize the class of uniform acts as an overclass of subdirectly irreducible acts over rectangular bands.
An inverse semigroup $S$ is a semigroup in which every element has a unique inverse in the sense of semigroup theory, that is, if $a \in S$ then there exists a unique $b\in S$ such that $a = aba$ and $b = bab$. We say that an inverse semigroup $S$ is a homogeneous (inverse) semigroup if any isomorphism between finitely generated (inverse) subsemigroups of $S$ extends to an automorphism of $S$. In this paper, we consider both these concepts of homogeneity for inverse semigroups, and show when they are equivalent. We also obtain certain classifications of homogeneous inverse semigroups, in parti…
The kernel relation $K$ on the lattice $\mathcal{L}(\mathcal{CR})$ of varieties of completely regular semigroups has been a central component in many investigations into the structure of $\mathcal{L}(\mathcal{CR})$. However, apart from the $K$-class of the trivial variety, which is just the lattice of varieties of bands, the detailed structure of kernel classes has remained a mystery until recently. Kad'ourek [RK2] has shown that for two large classes of subvarieties of $\mathcal{CR}$ their kernel classes are singletons. Elsewhere (see [RK1], [RK2], [RK3]) we have provided a detailed analysis …
An example of an extension of a completely simple semigroup U by a group H is given which cannot be embedded into the wreath product of U by H. On the other hand, every central extension of U by H is shown to be embeddable in the wreath product of U by H, and any extension of U by H is proved to be embeddable in a semidirect product of a completely simple semigroup V by H where the maximal subgroups of V are direct powers of those of U.
We consider various decision problems for automatic semigroups, which involve the provision of an automatic structure as part of the problem instance. With mild restrictions on the automatic structure, which seem to be necessary to make the problem well-defined, the uniform word problem for semigroups described by automatic structures is decidable. Under the same conditions, we show that one can also decide whether the semigroup is completely simple or completely zero-simple; in the case that it is, one can compute a Rees matrix representation for the semigroup, in the form of a Rees matrix to…
We show that for any monoid M, the family of languages accepted by M-automata (or equivalently, generated by regular valence grammars over M) is completely determined by that part of M which lies outside the maximal ideal. Hence, every such family arises as the family of languages accepted by N-automata where N is a simple or 0-simple monoid. A consequence is that every such family is either the class of regular languages, contains all the blind one-counter languages, or is the family of languages accepted by G-automata for G a non-locally-finite torsion group. We consider a natural extension …
Several complete congruences on the lattice L(CR) of varieties of completely regular semi- groups have been fundamental to studies of the structure of L(CR). These are the kernel relation K , the left trace relation Tl , the right trace relation Tr and their intersections K\capTl,K\cap Tr . However, with the exception of the lattice of all band varieties which happens to coincide with the kernel class of the trivial variety, almost nothing is known about the internal structure of individual K-classes beyond the fact that they are intervals in L(CR). Here we present a number of general results …
Completely simple semigroups arise as the support of limiting measures of random walks on semigroups. Such a limiting measure is supported on the kernel of the semigroup. Forming tensor powers of the random walk leads to a hierarchy of the limiting kernels. Tensor squares lead to quantum observables on the kernel. Recall that zeons are bosons modulo the basis elements squaring to zero. Using zeon powers leads naturally to quantum observables which reveal the structure of the kernel. Thus asymptotic information about the random walk is related to algebraic properties of the zeon powers of the r…
For a subset $B$ of $\mathbb{R}$, denote by $\operatorname{U}(B)$ be the semiring of (univariate) polynomials in $\mathbb{R}[X]$ that are strictly positive on $B$. Let $\mathbb{N}[X]$ be the semiring of (univariate) polynomials with non-negative integer coefficients. We study solutions of homogeneous linear equations over the polynomial semirings $\operatorname{U}(B)$ and $\mathbb{N}[X]$. In particular, we prove local-global principles for solving single homogeneous linear equations over these semirings. We then show PTIME decidability of determining the existence of non-zero solutions over $\…
We consider homogeneous varieties of linear algebras over an associative-commutative ring K with 1, i.e., the varieties in which free algebras are graded. Let F be a free algebra of some variety A of linear algebras over K freely generated by a finite set X, EndF be the semigroup of endomorphisms of F, and AutEndF be the group of automorphisms of the semigroup EndF. We investigate structure of the group AutEndF and its relation to the algebraical and categorical equivalence of algebras from A. We define a wide class of R1MF-domains containing, in particular, Bezout domains, unique factorizatio…
We propose a way of associating to each finitely generated monoid or semigroup a formal language, called its loop problem. In the case of a group, the loop problem is essentially the same as the word problem in the sense of combinatorial group theory. Like the word problem for groups, the loop problem is regular if and only if the monoid is finite. We study also the case in which the loop problem is context-free, showing that a celebrated group-theoretic result of Muller and Schupp extends to describe completely simple semigroups with context-free loop problems. We consider also right cancella…
All isolated, completely isolated, and nilpotent subsemigroups in the semigroup $\IS$ of all injective partial transformations of an $n$-element set, considered as a semigroup with a sandwich multiplication are described.
The paper contains a description of the maximal ideal spaces (spectra) $\cM_A$ of bi-invariant function algebras $A$ on a compact group $G$. There are natural compatible structures in $\cM_A$: it is a compact topological semigroup with involution, polar decomposition, and analytic structure. The paper contains a description of $\cM_A$ and related results on function algebras; for example, a bi-invariant function algebra on a connected compact Lie group is antisymmetric if and only if the Haar measure of its maximal torus is multiplicative on it. Some results are extended to the case of compact…
