To improve the robustness to rain, we present a physically-based rain rendering pipeline for realistically inserting rain into clear weather images. Our rendering relies on a physical particle simulator, an estimation of the scene lighting and an accurate rain photometric modeling to augment images with arbitrary amount of realistic rain or fog. We validate our rendering with a user study, proving our rain is judged 40% more realistic that state-of-the-art. Using our generated weather augmented Kitti and Cityscapes dataset, we conduct a thorough evaluation of deep object detection and semantic segmentation algorithms and show that their performance decreases in degraded weather, on the order of 15% for object detection and 60% for semantic segmentation. Furthermore, we show refining existing networks with our augmented images improves the robustness of both object detection and semantic segmentation algorithms. We experiment on nuScenes and measure an improvement of 15% for object detection and 35% for semantic segmentation compared to original rainy performance. Augmented databases and code are available on the project page.
Rain fills the atmosphere with water particles, which breaks the common assumption that light travels unaltered from the scene to the camera. While it is well-known that rain affects computer vision algorithms, quantifying its impact is difficult. In this context, we present a rain rendering pipeline that enables the systematic evaluation of common computer vision algorithms to controlled amounts of rain. We present three different ways to add synthetic rain to existing images datasets: completely physic-based; completely data-driven; and a combination of both. The physic-based rain augmentati…

Images captured in real-world applications in remote sensing, image or video retrieval, and outdoor surveillance suffer degraded quality introduced by poor weather conditions. Conditions such as rain and mist, introduce artifacts that make visual analysis challenging and limit the performance of high-level computer vision methods. For time-critical applications where a rapid response is necessary, it becomes crucial to develop algorithms that automatically remove rain, without diminishing the quality of the image contents. This article aims to develop a novel quaternion multi-stage multiscale …

Even as deep neural networks (DNNs) have achieved remarkable success on vision-related tasks, their performance is brittle to transformations in the input. Of particular interest are semantic transformations that model changes that have a basis in the physical world, such as rotations, translations, changes in lighting or camera pose. In this paper, we show how differentiable rendering can be utilized to generate images that are informative, yet realistic, and which can be used to analyze DNN performance and improve its robustness through data augmentation. Given a differentiable renderer and …
Current geometry-based monocular 3D object detection models can efficiently detect objects by leveraging perspective geometry, but their performance is limited due to the absence of accurate depth information. Though this issue can be alleviated in a depth-based model where a depth estimation module is plugged to predict depth information before 3D box reasoning, the introduction of such module dramatically reduces the detection speed. Instead of training a costly depth estimator, we propose a rendering module to augment the training data by synthesizing images with virtual-depths. The renderi…

We propose a systematic learning-based approach to the generation of massive quantities of synthetic 3D scenes and arbitrary numbers of photorealistic 2D images thereof, with associated ground truth information, for the purposes of training, benchmarking, and diagnosing learning-based computer vision and robotics algorithms. In particular, we devise a learning-based pipeline of algorithms capable of automatically generating and rendering a potentially infinite variety of indoor scenes by using a stochastic grammar, represented as an attributed Spatial And-Or Graph, in conjunction with state-of…

Single image deraining is typically addressed as residual learning to predict the rain layer from an input rainy image. For this purpose, an encoder-decoder network draws wide attention, where the encoder is required to encode a high-quality rain embedding which determines the performance of the subsequent decoding stage to reconstruct the rain layer. However, most of existing studies ignore the significance of rain embedding quality, thus leading to limited performance with over/under-deraining. In this paper, with our observation of the high rain layer reconstruction performance by an rain-t…

Images acquired by outdoor vision systems easily suffer poor visibility and annoying interference due to the rainy weather, which brings great challenge for accurately understanding and describing the visual contents. Recent researches have devoted great efforts on the task of rain removal for improving the image visibility. However, there is very few exploration about the quality assessment of de-rained image, even it is crucial for accurately measuring the performance of various de-raining algorithms. In this paper, we first create a de-raining quality assessment (DQA) database that collects…

Several popular computer vision (CV) datasets, specifically employed for Object Detection (OD) in autonomous driving tasks exhibit biases due to a range of factors including weather and lighting conditions. These biases may impair a model's generalizability, rendering it ineffective for OD in novel and unseen datasets. Especially, in autonomous driving, it may prove extremely high risk and unsafe for the vehicle and its surroundings. This work focuses on understanding these datasets better by identifying such "good-weather" bias. Methods to mitigate such bias which allows the OD models to perf…

A good object segmentation should contain clear contours and complete regions. However, mask-based segmentation can not handle contour features well on a coarse prediction grid, thus causing problems of blurry edges. While contour-based segmentation provides contours directly, but misses contours' details. In order to obtain fine contours, we propose a segmentation method named ContourRend which adopts a contour renderer to refine segmentation contours. And we implement our method on a segmentation model based on graph convolutional network (GCN). For the single object segmentation task on cit…

It has been shown that the majority of existing adversarial defense methods achieve robustness at the cost of sacrificing prediction accuracy. The undesirable severe drop in accuracy adversely affects the reliability of machine learning algorithms and prohibits their deployment in realistic applications. This paper aims to address this dilemma by proposing a novel preprocessing framework, which we term Robust and Accurate Image classificatioN(RAIN), to improve the robustness of given CNN classifiers and, at the same time, preserve their high prediction accuracies. RAIN introduces a new randomi…

Novel view synthesis with sparse inputs is a challenging problem for neural radiance fields (NeRF). Recent efforts alleviate this challenge by introducing external supervision, such as pre-trained models and extra depth signals, and by non-trivial patch-based rendering. In this paper, we present Frequency regularized NeRF (FreeNeRF), a surprisingly simple baseline that outperforms previous methods with minimal modifications to the plain NeRF. We analyze the key challenges in few-shot neural rendering and find that frequency plays an important role in NeRF's training. Based on the analysis, we …

We present a method for improving segmentation tasks on images affected by adherent rain drops and streaks. We introduce a novel stereo dataset recorded using a system that allows one lens to be affected by real water droplets while keeping the other lens clear. We train a denoising generator using this dataset and show that it is effective at removing the effect of real water droplets, in the context of image reconstruction and road marking segmentation. To further test our de-noising approach, we describe a method of adding computer-generated adherent water droplets and streaks to any images…

Rain effect in images typically is annoying for many multimedia and computer vision tasks. For removing rain effect from a single image, deep leaning techniques have been attracting considerable attentions. This paper designs a novel multi-task leaning architecture in an end-to-end manner to reduce the mapping range from input to output and boost the performance. Concretely, a decomposition net is built to split rain images into clean background and rain layers. Different from previous architectures, our model consists of, besides a component representing the desired clean image, an extra comp…
Numerical integration is a foundational technique in scientific computing and is at the core of many computer vision applications. Among these applications, neural volume rendering has recently been proposed as a new paradigm for view synthesis, achieving photorealistic image quality. However, a fundamental obstacle to making these methods practical is the extreme computational and memory requirements caused by the required volume integrations along the rendered rays during training and inference. Millions of rays, each requiring hundreds of forward passes through a neural network are needed t…

With the rapid development of the Metaverse, virtual humans have emerged, and human image synthesis and editing techniques, such as pose transfer, have recently become popular. Most of the existing techniques rely on GANs, which can generate good human images even with large variants and occlusions. But from our best knowledge, the existing state-of-the-art method still has the following problems: the first is that the rendering effect of the synthetic image is not realistic, such as poor rendering of some regions. And the second is that the training of GAN is unstable and slow to converge, su…

We propose DeRenderNet, a deep neural network to decompose the albedo and latent lighting, and render shape-(in)dependent shadings, given a single image of an outdoor urban scene, trained in a self-supervised manner. To achieve this goal, we propose to use the albedo maps extracted from scenes in videogames as direct supervision and pre-compute the normal and shadow prior maps based on the depth maps provided as indirect supervision. Compared with state-of-the-art intrinsic image decomposition methods, DeRenderNet produces shadow-free albedo maps with clean details and an accurate prediction o…

Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) have emerged as a potent paradigm for representing scenes and synthesizing photo-realistic images. A main limitation of conventional NeRFs is that they often fail to produce high-quality renderings under novel viewpoints that are significantly different from the training viewpoints. In this paper, instead of exploiting few-shot image synthesis, we study the novel view extrapolation setting that (1) the training images can well describe an object, and (2) there is a notable discrepancy between the training and test viewpoints' distributions. We present RapNeRF (RAy…

Lidar sensors are often used in mobile robots and autonomous vehicles to complement camera, radar and ultrasonic sensors for environment perception. Typically, perception algorithms are trained to only detect moving and static objects as well as ground estimation, but intentionally ignore weather effects to reduce false detections. In this work, we present an in-depth analysis of automotive lidar performance under harsh weather conditions, i.e. heavy rain and dense fog. An extensive data set has been recorded for various fog and rain conditions, which is the basis for the conducted in-depth an…
In this work, we propose a novel method for the detailed reconstruction of transparent objects by exploiting polarimetric cues. Most of the existing methods usually lack sufficient constraints and suffer from the over-smooth problem. Hence, we introduce polarization information as a complementary cue. We implicitly represent the object's geometry as a neural network, while the polarization render is capable of rendering the object's polarization images from the given shape and illumination configuration. Direct comparison of the rendered polarization images to the real-world captured images wi…
