We study the evolution of a collisionally inhomogeneous matter wave in a spatial gradient of the interaction strength. Starting with a Bose-Einstein condensate with weak repulsive interactions in quasi-one-dimensional geometry, we monitor the evolution of a matter wave that simultaneously extends into spatial regions with attractive and repulsive interactions. We observe the formation and the decay of soliton-like density peaks, counter-propagating self-interfering wave packets, and the creation of cascades of solitons. The matter-wave dynamics is well reproduced in numerical simulations based on the nonpolynomial Schroedinger equation with three-body loss, allowing us to better understand the underlying behaviour based on a wavelet transformation. Our analysis provides new understanding of collapse processes for solitons, and opens interesting connections to other nonlinear instabilities.
We study the impact of collisionally inhomogeneous binary and three body interaction on Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of a dilute gas in a bichromatic optical lattice. We observe that the localized matter wave density which decreases after the introduction of repulsive spatially inhomogeneous binary interaction can be sustained by the addition of constant attractive binary strength in equal amounts. If the balance between repulsive spatially inhomogeneous binary interaction and constant attractive interaction is disturbed, the condensates collapse. Reversal of sign of interaction ensures th…
By direct numerical simulation and variational solution of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we studied the stationary and dynamic characteristics of a cigar-shaped, localized, collisionally inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a one-dimensional bichromatic quasi-periodic optical-lattice potential, as used in a recent experiment on the localization of a Bose-Einstein condensate [Roati et al., Nature (London) {\bf 453}, 895 (2008)]. The effective potential characterizing the spatially modulated nonlinearity is obtained. It is found that the collisional inhomogeneity has influence not …
We study the emergence of Faraday waves in cigar-shaped collisionally inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensates subject to periodic modulation of the radial confinement. Considering a Gaussian-shaped radially inhomogeneous scattering length, we show through extensive numerical simulations and detailed variational treatment that the spatial period of the emerging Faraday waves increases as the inhomogeneity of the scattering length gets weaker, and that it saturates once the width of the radial inhomogeneity reaches the radial width of the condensate. In the regime of strongly inhomogeneous scatt…
We study the structure, stability, and dynamics of dark solitary waves in parabolically trapped, collisionally inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with spatially periodic variations of the scattering length. This collisional inhomogeneity yields a nonlinear lattice, which we tune from a small-amplitude, approximately sinusoidal structure to a periodic sequence of densely spaced spikes. We start by investigating time-independent inhomogeneities, and we subsequently examine the dynamical response when one starts with a collisionally homogeneous BEC and then switches on an inhomogeneit…
We study stability of solitary vortices in the two-dimensional trapped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with a spatially localized region of self-attraction. Solving the respective Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations and running direct simulations of the underlying Gross-Pitaevskii equation reveals that vortices with topological charge up to S = 6 (at least) are stable above a critical value of the chemical potential (i.e., below a critical number of atoms, which sharply increases with S). The largest nonlinearity-localization radius admitting the stabilization of the higher-order vortices is estimat…
We study Faraday and resonant waves in two-component quasi-one-dimensional (cigar-shaped) collisionally inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensates subject to periodic modulation of the radial confinement. We show by means of extensive numerical simulations that, as the system exhibits stronger spatially-localised binary collisions (whose scattering length is taken for convenience to be of Gaussian form), the system becomes effectively a linear one. In other words, as the scattering length approaches a delta-function, we observe that the two nonlinear configurations typical for binary cigar-shaped…
We construct a variational wave function for inhomogeneous weakly interacting Bose--Einstein condensates beyond the mean-field approximation by incorporating $3/2$-body correlations. From our numerical results calculated for a system trapped by a one-dimensional harmonic oscillator, the $3/2$-body correlations give a contribution comparable to the mean- field energy toward lowering the ground-state energy.
Within the self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation, an explicit expression for the ground state energy of inhomogeneous Bose gas is derived as a functional of the inhomogeneous density of the Bose-Einstein condensate. The results obtained are based on existence of the off-diagonal long-range order in the single-particle density matrix for systems with a Bose-Einstein condensate. This makes it possible to avoid the use of anomalous averages. The explicit form of the kinetic energy, which differs from one in the Gross-Pitaevski approach, is found. This form is valid beyond the Hartree-Fock ap…
We calculate the condensate fraction and the condensate and non-condensate spatial and momentum distribution of the Bose-Hubbard model in a trap. From our results, it is evident that using approximate distributions can lead to erroneous experimental estimates of the condensate. Strong interactions cause the condensate to develop pedestal-like structures around the central peak that can be mistaken as non-condensate atoms. Near the transition temperature, the peak itself can include a significant non-condensate component. Using distributions generated from QMC simulations, experiments can map t…
An interplay of optical lattices and nonlinear impurities in controlling the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensate bright solitons is investigated using effective potential approach. The ability of pushing the solitons into or away from the impurity region by changing both lattice and impurity parameters is suggested. A possibility for the existence of stable fundamental gap solitons, which appear to satisfy an inverted Vakhitov-Kolokolov criterion, is examined.
We show two kinds of inhomogeneous spin domain possessing Néel-like domain walls in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate, which are induced by the positive and negative quadratic Zeeman effect (QZE) respectively. In both cases, the spin density distribution is inhomogeneous and has zeros where the magnetization vanishes. For positive and negative QZE, the spin patterns and topological structures are remarkably different. Such phenomena are due to the pointwise different axisymmetry-breaking caused by the pointwise different population exchange between the sublevels, arising uniquely from the QZE. W…
The Kibble-Zurek mechanism is applied to the spontaneous formation of vortices in a harmonically trapped thermal gas following a temperature quench through the critical value for Bose-Einstein condensation. While in the homogeneous scenario vortex nucleation is always expected, we show that it can be completely suppressed in the presence of the confinement potential, whenever the speed of the spatial front undergoing condensation is lower than a threshold velocity. Otherwise, the interplay between the geometry and causality leads to different scaling laws for the density of vortices as a funct…
We study the dynamics of a harmonically trapped quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate subjected to a moving disorder potential of finite extent. We show that, due to the inhomogeneity of the sample, only a percentage of the atoms is localized at supersonic velocities of a random potential. We find that this percentage can be sensitively increased by introducing suitable correlations in the disorder potential such as those provided by random dimers.
We study the effects of a position-dependent artificial gauge field on an atomic Bose--Einstein condensate in quasi-one-dimensional and two-dimensional ring settings. The inhomogeneous artificial gauge field can induce global and local currents in the Bose--Einstein condensate via phase gradients along the ring and vortices, respectively. We observe two different regimes in the system depending on the radial size of the ring and strength of the gauge field. For weak artificial gauge fields, the angular momentum increases, as expected, in a quantized manner; however, for stronger values of the …
We study a two component Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of an inhomogeneous artificial gauge field. In response to this field, the condensate forms a localised vortex lattice structure that leads to a non-trivial symmetry breaking in the phase separated regime. The underlying physical mechanism can be understood by considering the energy landscape and we present a simplified model that is capable of reproducing the main features of the phase separation transition. The intuition gained by numerically solving this simplified model is then corroborated using the analytical Thomas-Fermi …
We analyze dynamics of the infinite-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model with spatially inhomogeneous dissipation in the hardcore boson limit by solving the Lindblad master equation with use of the Gutzwiller variational method. We consider dissipation processes that correspond to inelastic light scattering in the case of Bose gases in optical lattices. We assume that the dissipation is applied to a half of lattice sites in a spatially alternating manner. We focus on steady states at which the system arrives after long-time evolution. We find that when the average particle density is varied, the ste…
We develop an inhomogeneous mean-field theory for the extended Bose-Hubbard model with a quadratic, confining potential. In the absence of this potential, our mean-field theory yields the phase diagram of the homogeneous extended Bose-Hubbard model. This phase diagram shows a superfluid (SF) phase and lobes of Mott-insulator (MI), density-wave (DW), and supersolid (SS) phases in the plane of the chemical potential (μ) and on-site repulsion (U); we present phase diagrams for representative values of V, the repulsive energy for bosons on nearest-neighbor sites. We demonstrate that, when the conf…
We derive expressions for the zeroth and the first three spectral moment sum rules for the retarded Green's function and for the zeroth and the first spectral moment sum rules for the retarded self-energy of the inhomogeneous Bose-Hubbard model in nonequilibrium, when the local on-site repulsion and the chemical potential are time-dependent, and in the presence of an external time-dependent electromagnetic field. We also evaluate these moments for equilibrium, where all time dependence and external fields vanish. Unlike similar sum rules for the Fermi-Hubbard model, in the Bose-Hubbard model c…
The Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of magnons created by a strong pumping in ferromagnetic thin films of yttrium iron garnet used as systems of finite size is considered analytically. Such a peculiarity, typical for this magnetic material, as the presence of a minimum in the spectrum of spin waves at a finite value of the wave vector is taken into account. The definition of hightemperature BEC is introduced and its characteristics are discussed. A role of boundary conditions for spin variables is analyzed, and it is shown that in the case of free spins on the boundary the magnon lattice can …
We investigate some aspects of the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of quantum gases in the presence of inhomogeneous conditions. We consider three-dimensional (3D) quantum gases trapped by an external potential when the temperature is sufficiently low to show a BEC phase region around the center of the trap. If the trap is sufficiently large, different phases may coexist in different space regions, when moving from the center of the trap. We show that the quantum gas develops a peculiar critical behavior at the boundary of the BEC region, whose scaling behavior is controlled by the universali…
We study the effects of repulsive interaction and disorder on Bosons in a two-site Bose-Hubbard system, which provides a simple model of the dirty boson problem. By comparison with exact numerical results, we demonstrate how a straightforward application of the Bogoliubov approximation fails even to deliver a qualitatively correct picture: It wrongly predicts an increase of the condensate depletion due to disorder. We show that, in the presence of disorder, the noncommutative character of the condensate operator has to be retained for a correct description of the system.
We present an extensive study of Mott insulator (MI) and superfluid (SF) shells in Bose-Hubbard (BH) models for bosons in optical lattices with harmonic traps. For this we develop an inhomogeneous mean-field theory. Our results for the BH model with one type of spinless bosons agrees quantitatively with quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations. Our approach is numerically less intensive than such simulations, so we are able to perform calculation on experimentally realistic, large 3D systems, explore a wide range of parameter values, and make direct contact with a variety of experimental measurem…
We derive a general and exact equation of motion for a quantised vortex in an inhomogeneous two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate. This equation expresses the velocity of a vortex as a sum of local ambient density and phase gradients in the vicinity of the vortex. We perform Gross-Pitaevskii simulations of single vortex dynamics in both harmonic and hard-walled disk-shaped traps, and find excellent agreement in both cases with our analytical prediction. The simulations reveal that, in a harmonic trap, the main contribution to the vortex velocity is an induced ambient phase gradient, a findi…
We demonstrate the fast accumulation of Cr atoms in a conservative potential from a magnetically guided atomic beam. Without laser cooling on a cycling transition, a single dissipative step realized by optical pumping allows to load atoms at a rate of 2*10^7 1/s in the trap. Within less than 100 ms we reach the collisionally dense regime, from which we directly produce a Bose-Einstein condensate with subsequent evaporative cooling. This constitutes a new approach to degeneracy where, provided a slow beam of particles can be produced by some means, Bose-Einstein condensation can be reached for …
We study the dispersion mechanism of Lieb mode excitations of both single and multi component ultra-cold atomic Bose gas, subject to a harmonic confinement through chirp management. It is shown that in some parameter domain, the hole-like excitations lead to the soliton's negative mass regime, arising due to the coupling between chirp momentum and Kohn mode. In low momenta region the trap considerably affects the dispersion of the grey soliton, which opens a new window to observe Lieb-mode excitations. Further, we extend our analysis to binary condensate, which yields usual shape compatible gr…
In phase transition dynamics involving symmetry breaking, topological defects can be spontaneously created but it is suppressed in a spatially inhomogeneous system due to the spreading of the ordered phase information. We demonstrate the defect suppression effect in a trapped atomic Bose gas which is quenched into a superfluid phase. The spatial distribution of created defects is measured for various quench times and it is shown that for slower quenches, the spontaneous defect production is relatively more suppressed in the sample's outer region with higher atomic density gradient. The power-l…
The SU(1,1) interferometer was originally conceived as a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with the beam-splitters replaced by parametric amplifiers. The parametric amplifiers produce states with correlations that result in enhanced phase sensitivity. $F=1$ spinor Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) can serve as the parametric amplifiers for an atomic version of such an interferometer by collisionally producing entangled pairs of $\left<F=1,m=\pm1\right|$ atoms. We simulate the effect of single and double-sided seeding of the inputs to the amplifier using the truncated-Wigner approximation. We find tha…
We investigate the finite temperature properties of the one-dimensional two-component Bose gas (2CBG) with repulsive contact interaction in a harmonic trap. Making use of a new lattice embedding for the 2CBG and the quantum transfer matrix we derive a system of two nonlinear integral equations characterizing the thermodynamics of the uniform system for all values of the relevant parameters: temperature, strength of the interaction, chemical potential and magnetic field. This system allows for an easy numerical implementation in stark contrast with the infinite number of equations obtained by e…
Light thermalised at room temperature in an optically pumped, dye-filled microcavity resembles a model system of non-interacting Bose-Einstein condensation in the presence of dissipation. We have experimentally investigated some of the steady-state properties of this unusual state of light and found features which do not match the available theoretical descriptions. We have seen that the critical pump power for condensation depends on the pump beam geometry, being lower for smaller pump beams. Far below threshold, both intracavity photon number and thermalised photon cloud size depend on pump …
We investigate the spatially dependent relative phase evolution of an elongated two-component Bose-Einstein condensate. The pseudospin-1/2 system is comprised of the |F=1,m_F=-1> and |F=2,m_F=+1> hyperfine ground states of 87Rb, which we magnetically trap and interrogate with radio-frequency and microwave fields. We probe the relative phase evolution with Ramsey interferometry and observe a temporal decay of the interferometric contrast well described by a mean-field formalism. Inhomogeneity of the collective relative phase dominates the loss of interferometric contrast, rather than decoherenc…
We analyse the stability of inhomogeneous superfluid phases in a system consisting of identical fermions confined in two layers that are immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). The fermions in the two layers interact via an induced interaction mediated by the BEC, which gives rise to pairing. We present zero temperature phase diagrams varying the chemical potential difference between the two layers and the range of the induced interaction, and show that there is a large region where an inhomogeneous superfluid phase is the ground state. This region grows with increasing range of the indu…
We apply the theory of inhomogeneous Kibble-Zurek mechanism to understand quench dynamics from the Mott insulator to the superfluid in a cold Bose gases confined in both a two-dimensional optical lattice and a harmonic trap. The local quench time and the freeze-out region associated with the nonadiabatic transition take a nontrivial positional dependence due to the Mott-lobe structure of the ground state phase diagram of the Bose-Hubbard model. We demonstrate that the quench dynamics through the time-dependent Gutzwiller simulations, revealing inhomogeneous properties of the growth of the supe…
Spontaneous spin vortex formation in the magnetic phase transition of a trapped spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate is investigated using mean-field theory. In a harmonic trapping potential, an inhomogeneous atomic density leads to spatial variations of the critical point, magnetization time scale, and spin correlation length. The Kibble-Zurek phenomena are shown to emerge even in such inhomogeneous systems, when the quench of the quadratic Zeeman energy is fast enough. For slow quench, the magnetized region gradually expands from the center of the trap pushing out spin vortices, which hinders the…
We investigate the Stückelberg oscillations of a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate subject to a spatially inhomogeneous transverse magnetic field and a periodic longitudinal field. We show that the time-domain Stückelberg oscillations result in interference fringes in the density profiles of all spin components due to the spatial inhomogeneity of the transverse field. This phenomenon represents the Landau-Zener-Stückelberg interference in the space-domain. Since the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction between spin-1 atoms induces an inhomogeneous effective magnetic field, interference fringes als…
The one-body density matrix of weakly interacting, condensed bosons in external potentials is calculated using inhomogeneous Bogoliubov theory. We determine the condensate deformation caused by weak external potentials on the mean-field level. The momentum distribution of quantum fluctuations around the deformed ground state is obtained analytically, and finally the resulting quantum depletion is calculated. The depletion due to the external potential, or potential depletion for short, is a small correction to the homogeneous depletion, validating our inhomogeneous Bogoliubov theory. Analytica…
One dimensional propagation of ultraslow optical pulses in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate taking into account the dispersion and the spatial inhomogeneity is investigated. Analytical and semi-analytical solutions of the dispersive inhomogeneous wave equation modeling the ultraslow pulse propagation are developed and compared against the standard wave equation solvers based upon Cranck-Nicholson and pseudo-spectral methods. The role of curvature of the trapping potential of the condensate on the amount of dispersion of the ultraslow pulse is pointed out.
We study theoretically the collective dynamics of rotational excitations of polar molecules loaded into an optical lattice in two dimensions. These excitations behave as hard-core bosons with a relativistic energy dispersion arising from the dipolar coupling between molecules. This has interesting consequences for the collective many-body phases. The rotational excitations can form a Bose-Einstein condensate at non-zero temperature, manifesting itself as a divergent $T_2$ coherence time of the rotational transition even in the presence of inhomogeneous broadening. The dynamical evolution of a …
Motivated by the calculation of correlation functions in inhomogeneous one-dimensional (1d) quantum systems, the 2d Inhomogeneous Gaussian Free Field (IGFF) is studied and solved. The IGFF is defined in a domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^2$ equipped with a conformal class of metrics $[{\rm g}]$ and with a real positive coupling constant $K: Ω\rightarrow \mathbb{R}_{>0}$ by the action $\mathcal{S}[h] = \frac{1}{8π} \int_Ω\frac{\sqrt{\rm g} d^2 {\rm x}}{K({\rm x})} \, {\rm g}^{i j} (\partial_i h)(\partial_j h)$. All correlations functions of the IGFF are expressible in terms of the Green's functions …
We systematically investigate the properties of three-dimensional dipolar binary Bose mixture at low temperatures. A set of coupled self-consistent equations of motion are derived for the two condensates. In the homogeneous case, useful analytical formulas for the condensate depletion, the anomalous density, the ground-state energy, and the equation of state are obtained. The theory is extended to the inhomogeneous case and the importance of the inhomogeneity is highlighted. Our results open up a new avenue for studying dipolar mixture droplets. Impacts of the dipole-dipole interaction on the …
We consider the 1d interacting Bose gas in the presence of time-dependent and spatially inhomogeneous contact interactions. Within its attractive phase, the gas allows for bound states of an arbitrary number of particles, which are eventually populated if the system is dynamically driven from the repulsive to the attractive regime. Building on the framework of Generalized Hydrodynamics, we analytically determine the formation of bound states in the limit of adiabatic changes in the interactions. Our results are valid for arbitrary initial thermal states and, more generally, Generalized Gibbs E…
We demonstrate a new way to extend the coherence time of separated Bose-Einstein condensates that involves immersion into a superfluid bath. When both the system and the bath have similar scattering lengths, immersion in a superfluid bath cancels out inhomogeneous potentials either imposed by external fields or inherent in density fluctuations due to atomic shot noise. This effect, which we call superfluid shielding, allows for coherence lifetimes beyond the projection noise limit. We probe the coherence between separated condensates in different sites of an optical lattice by monitoring the c…
We have studied the interaction between multiple, competing spatial modes that are excited by a quantum quench of an antiferromagnetic spinor Bose-Einstein condensate. We observed Hanbury Brown-Twiss correlations and associated super-Poissonian noise in the mode populations. The decay of these correlations was consistent with experimentally observed spin domain patterns. Data were compared with a real-space Bogoliubov theory as well as numerical solution of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations that were seeded by quantum noise via the truncated Wigner approximation. The spatial modes that we…
Continuous phase transitions occur in a wide range of physical systems, and provide a context for the study of non-equilibrium dynamics and the formation of topological defects. The Kibble-Zurek (KZ) mechanism predicts the scaling of the resulting density of defects as a function of the quench rate through a critical point, and this can provide an estimate of the critical exponents of a phase transition. In this work we extend our previous study of the miscible-immiscible phase transition of a binary Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) composed of two hyperfine states in which the spin dynamics are…
We investigate a one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model in a parametrically driven global harmonic trap. The delicate interplay of both the local atom interaction and the global driving allows to control the dynamical stability of the trapped quantum many-body state. The mechanism is illustrated for weak interaction by a discretized Gross-Pitaevskii equation within a Gaussian variational ansatz, yielding to a Mathieu equation for the condensate width. The parametric resonance condition can be tuned by the atom interaction strength. For stronger interaction, this mechanism is confirmed by results o…
We consider a time-dependent extension of a perturbative mean-field approach to the dirty boson problem by considering how switching on and off a weak disorder potential affects the stationary state of an initially equilibrated Bose-Einstein condensate by the emergence of a disorder-induced condensate deformation. We find that in the switch on scenario the stationary condensate deformation turns out to be a sum of an equilibrium part, that actually corresponds to adiabatic switching on the disorder, and a dynamically-induced part, where the latter depends on the particular driving protocol. If…
We consider impurity atoms embedded in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate in a quasi-one dimensional regime. We study the effects of repulsive coupling between the impurities and Bose species on the equilibrium of the system for both miscible and immiscible mixtures by numerically solving the underlying coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. Our results reveal that the presence of impurities may lead to a miscible-immiscible phase transition due to the interaction of the impurities and the two condensates. Within the realm of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations we calculate the quantum fluct…
It is shown for the Bose-Einstein condensate of cold atomic system that the new unperturbed Hamiltonian, which includes not only the first and second powers of the zero mode operators but also the higher ones, determines a unique and stationary vacuum at zero temperature. From the standpoint of quantum field theory, it is done in a consistent manner that the canonical commutation relation of the field operator is kept. In this formulation, the condensate phase does not diffuse and is robust against the quantum fluctuation of the zero mode. The standard deviation for the phase operator depends …
We study the dynamics of an impurity embedded in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate (Bose polaron), by recalling the quantum Brownian motion model. It is crucial that the model considers a parabolic trapping potential to resemble the experimental conditions. Thus, we detail here how the formal derivation changes due to the gas trap, in comparison to the homogeneous gas. We first find that the presence of a gas trap leads to a new form of the bath-impurity coupling constant and a larger degree in the super-ohmicity of the spectral density. This is manifested as a different dependence of the sys…
A number of recent experiments with nearly pure atomic Bose-Einstein condensates have confirmed the predicted dark soliton oscillations when under harmonic trapping. However, a dark soliton propagating in an inhomogeneous condensate has also been predicted to be unstable to the emission of sound waves. Although harmonic trapping supports an equilibrium between the co-existing soliton and sound, we show that the ensuing dynamics are sensitive to trap anharmonicities. Such anharmonicities can break the soliton-sound equilibrium and lead to the net decay of the soliton on a considerably shorter t…
We observe the condensation of magnon excitations within an $F=1$ $^{87}$Rb spinor Bose-Einstein condensed gas. Magnons are pumped into a longitudinally spin-polarized gas, allowed to equilibrate to a non-degenerate distribution, and then cooled evaporatively at near-constant net longitudinal magnetization whereupon they condense. We find magnon condensation to be described quantitatively as the condensation of free particles in an effective potential that is uniform within the ferromagnetic condensate volume, evidenced by the number and distribution of magnons at the condensation transition. …
The miscibility-immiscibility phase transition in binary Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) can be controlled by a coupling between the two components. Here we propose a new scheme that uses coupling-induced pattern formation to test the Kibble-Zurek mechanism (KZM) of topological-defect formation in a quantum phase transition. For a binary BEC in a ring trap we find that the number of domains forming the pattern scales with the coupling quench rate with an exponent as predicted by the KZM. For a binary BEC in an elongated harmonic trap we find a different scaling law due to the transition being…
We provide a new hydrodynamic framework to describe out-of-equilibrium integrable systems with space-time inhomogeneous interactions. Our result builds up on the recently-introduced Generalized Hydrodynamics (GHD). The method allows to analytically describe the dynamics during generic space-time-dependent smooth modulations of the interactions. As a proof of concept, we study experimentally-motivated interaction quenches in the trapped interacting Bose gas, which cannot be treated with current analytical or numerical methods. We also benchmark our results in the XXZ spin chain and in the class…
The dynamical evolution of an inhomogeneous ultracold atomic gas quenched at different controllable rates through the Bose-Einstein condensation phase transition is studied numerically in the premise of a recent experiment in an anisotropic harmonic trap. Our findings based on the stochastic (projected) Gross-Pitaevskii equation are shown to be consistent at early times with the predictions of the homogeneous Kibble-Zurek mechanism. This is demonstrated by collapsing the early dynamical evolution of densities, spectral functions and correlation lengths for different quench rates, based on an a…
We discuss typical experimental signatures for the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of an ultracold Bose gas in an inhomogeneous optical lattice at finite temperature. Applying the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov-Popov formalism, we calculate quantities such as the momentum-space density distribution, visibility and peak width as the system is tuned through the superfluid to normal phase transition. Different from previous studies, we consider systems with fixed total particle number, which is of direct experimental relevance. We show that the onset of BEC is accompanied by sharp features in all these…
For a spin-carrying particle moving in a spatially varying magnetic field, effective electromagnetic forces can arise due to the geometric phase associated with adiabatic spin rotation of the particle. We report the observation of a geometric Hall effect in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate with a skyrmion spin texture. Under translational oscillations of the spin texture, the condensate resonantly develops a circular motion in a harmonic trap, demonstrating the existence of an effective Lorentz force. When the condensate circulates, quantized vortices are nucleated in the boundary region of t…
