In 2+1 dimensions, QED becomes exactly solvable for all values of the fermion charge $e$ in the limit of many fermions $N_f\gg 1$. We present results for the free energy density at finite temperature $T$ to next-to-leading-order in large $N_f$. In the naive large $N_f$ limit, we uncover an apparently UV-divergent contribution to the vacuum energy at order ${\cal O}(e^6 N_f^3)$, which we argue to become a finite contribution of order ${\cal O}(N_f^4 e^6)$ when resumming formally higher-order $1/N_f$ contributions. We find the finite-temperature free energy to be well-behaved for all values of the dimensionless coupling $e^2N_f/T$, and to be bounded by the free energy of $N_f$ free fermions and non-interacting QED3, respectively. We invite follow-up studies from finite-temperature lattice gauge theory at large but fixed $N_f$ to test our results in the regime $e^2N_f/T\gg 1$.
In continuation of our earlier proposal for evaluating thermal effective actions, we determine the exact fermion propagator in 1+1 dimensional massive QED. This propagator is used to derive the finite temperature effective action of the theory which generates systematically all the one loop Feynman amplitudes calculated in thermal perturbation theory. Various aspects of the effective action including its imaginary part are discussed.
Planar quantum electrodynamics, in presence of tree-level Chern-Simons term, is shown to support bound state excitations, with a threshold, not present for the pure Chern-Simons theory. In the present case, the bound state gets destabilized by vacuum fluctuations. The bound state itself finds justification in the duality of the theory with massive topological vector field. Thermal fluctuations further destabilize this state, leading to smooth dissociation at high temperatures. Physical systems are suggested for observing such a bound state.
We study the real time dynamics of $N_F$ flavors of fermions coupled to a $U(1)$ gauge field in $2+1$ dimensions to leading order in a $1/N_F$ expansion. For large enough $N_{F}$, this is an interacting conformal field theory and describes the low energy properties of the Dirac spin liquid. We focus on thermalization and the onset of many-body quantum chaos which can be diagnosed from the growth of initally anti-commuting fermion field operators. We compute such anti-commutators in this gauge theory to leading order in $1/N_F$. We find that the anti-commutator grows exponentially in time and c…
The equilibrium size and temperature limits of thermally and chemically equilibrated $e^+e^-γ$ plasma drops are investigated at a given energy content. For a plasma to be equilibrated it must be opaque to electron and photon interactions. The opaqueness condition is determined by comparing plasma size with the mean free electron and photon paths. We calculate those paths using thermal Lorentz-invariant reaction rates for pair production and electron(positron) and photon scattering. The range of the corresponding plasma temperature and size is evaluated numerically. Considering the energy and s…
We advance a novel method for the finite-temperature effective action for nonequilibrium quantum fields and find the QED effective action in time-dependent electric fields, where charged pairs evolve out of equilibrium. The imaginary part of the effective action consists of thermal loops of the Fermi-Dirac or Bose-Einstein distribution for the initial thermal ensemble weighted with factors for vacuum fluctuations. And the real part of the effective action is determined by the mean number of produced pairs, vacuum polarization, and thermal distribution. The mean number of produced pairs is equa…
We calculate the free energy of a hot gas of electrons and photons to three loops using the hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory reorganization of finite-temperature perturbation theory. We calculate the free energy through three loops by expanding in a power series in m_D/T, m_f/T, and e^2, where m_D and m_f are thermal masses and e is the coupling constant. We demonstrate that the hard-thermal-loop perturbation reorganization improves the convergence of the successive approximations to the QED free energy at large coupling, e ~ 2. The reorganization is gauge invariant by construction, and d…
The three-dimensional non-compact QED is known to exhibit weak confinement when fermions acquire a finite mass via the mechanism of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking. In this paper, we study the effect of fermion damping caused by elastic scattering on the classical potential between fermions. By calculating the vacuum polarization function that incorporates the fermion damping effect, we show that fermion damping can induce a weak confinement even when the fermions are massless and the chiral symmetry is not broken.
In this work quantum electrodynamics at T > 0 is considered. For this purpose we use thermo field dynamics and the causal approach to quantum field theory according to Epstein and Glaser, the latter being a rigorous method to avoid the well-known ultraviolet divergencies of quantum field theory. It will be shown that the theory is infrared divergent if the usual scattering states are used. The same is true if we use more general mixed states. This is in contradiction to the results established in the literature, and we will point out why these earlier approaches fail to describe the infrared b…
The equivalence between thermal field theory and the Boltzmann transport equation is investigated at higher orders in the context of quantum electrodynamics. We compare the contributions obtained from the collisionless transport equation with the high temperature limit of the one-loop thermal Green's function. Our approach employs the representation of the thermal Green's functions in terms of forward scattering amplitudes. The general structure of these amplitudes clearly indicates that the physics described by the leading high temperature limit of quantum electrodynamics can be obtained from…
We investigate the dynamical spin polarization of a massless electron probing an electron plasma in locally thermal equilibrium via the Moller scattering from the quantum kinetic theory. We derive an axial kinetic equation delineating the dynamical spin evolution in the presence of the collision term with quantum corrections up to $\mathcal{O}(\hbar)$ and the leading-logarithmic order in coupling by using the hard-thermal-loop (HTL) approximation, from which we extract the spin-polarization rate induced by the spacetime gradients of the medium. When the electron probe approaches local equilibr…
We present results from the first lattice simulations of three dimensional non-compact quantum electrodynamics (QED3) with N_f four-component fermion flavors coupled to a weak Z(2) chirally invariant four-fermi interaction. Results with $N_f \ge 4$ show that the scaling near the strong coupling chiral transition or sharp crossover is determined by the 3d Gross Neveu ultraviolet-stable renormalization group fixed point. Small deviations of the N_f=4 critical exponents from the respective Gross Neveu ones, hint at evidence for non-zero fermion mass generated by the gauge fields dynamics that mig…
At zero temperature, the Lorentz invariance is strictly preserved in three-dimensional quantum electrodynamics. This property ensures that the velocity of massless fermions is not renormalized by the gauge interaction. At finite temperature, however, the Lorentz invariance is explicitly broken by the thermal fluctuation. The longitudinal component of gauge interaction becomes short-ranged due to thermal screening, whereas the transverse component remains long-ranged because of local gauge invariance. The transverse gauge interaction leads to singular corrections to the fermion self-energy and …
We studied a QED analog of the Franz-Keldysh effect, and the interplay between the non-perturbative (the Schwinger mechanism) and the perturbative particle production mechanism from the vacuum in the presence of a strong slow field superimposed by a weak field. We found that the Franz-Keldysh effect significantly affects the particle production: (i) the perturbative particle production occurs even below the threshold energy; (ii) the perturbative production becomes the most efficient just above the threshold energy; and (iii) an oscillating behavior appears in the production number above the t…
We obtain the effective Lagrangian of static gravitational fields interacting with a QED plasma at high temperature. Using the equivalence between the static hard thermal loops and those with zero external energy-momentum, we compute the effective Lagrangian up to two-loop order. We also obtain a non-perturbative contribution which arises from the sum of all infrared divergent ring-diagrams. From the gauge and Weyl symmetries of the theory, we deduce to all orders that this effective Lagrangian is equivalent to the pressure of a QED plasma in Minkowski space-time, with the global temperature r…
We study the effective parameters of QED near the decoupling temperature and show that the QED perturbation theory works perfectly fine at temperatures, below the decoupling temperature. Temperature dependent selfmass of electron, at T=m gives two different values, if approached to the same overlapping point. It ia shown that at $T=m$, change in thermal contribution of the electron selfmass is 1/3 of the low temperature value and 1/2 of the high temperature value. The difference of behavior measures the electron background contributions at T=m. These electrons are emitted through beta decay. T…
We want to study thermal corrections on the speed of light at low temperature considering temperature dependence of photon vacuum polarization tensor at two-loop level in the standard QED. It is found that the heat bath behaves as a dispersive medium to the propagation of light and reduces its speed proprtional to the second order of temperature. Similiraties and differences with already known calculations which are based on Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian and/or those using temperature dependent electromagnetic properties of the medium are discussed.
