In this work we aim to analyze the effect of a strong antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling (ASOC) on superconductivity of noncentrosymmetric LaPtSi. We study the energy gap structure of polycrystalline LaPtSi by using magnetic penetration depth measurements down to 0.02$T_c$. We observed a dirty s-wave behavior, which provides compelling evidence that the spin-singlet component of the mixed pairing state is highly dominant. This is consistent with previous results in the sense that the mere presence of a strong ASOC does not lead to unconventional behaviors. Our result also downplays LaPtSi as a good candidate for realizing time-reversal invariant topological superconductivity.
The noncentrosymmetric superconductors LaPdSi3 and LaPtSi3 have been studied with magnetization, specific heat, resistivity and muon spin rotation/relaxation (muSR) measurements. These crystallize in the tetragonal BaNiSn3 structure and superconductivity is observed at Tc = 2.65 K for LaPdSi3 and Tc = 1.52(6) K for LaPtSi3. The results are consistent with both compounds being weakly coupled, fully gapped superconductors but muSR measurements reveal that LaPdSi3 is a bulk type-I superconductor while LaPtSi3 is a type-II material with a Ginzburg-Landau parameter of kappa = 2.49(4). This is furth…
We show that the nonuniform state (Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state) of the spin triplet superconductivity in noncentrosymmetric systems is stabilized by antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling even if the magnetic field is absent. The transition temperature of the spin triplet superconductivity is reduced by the antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling in general. This pair breaking effect is shown to be similar to the Pauli pair breaking effect due to magnetic field for the spin singlet superconductivity, in which FFLO state is stabilized near the Pauli limit (or Chandrasekhar-Clogston limit)…
When the inversion symmetry is broken, the spin-orbit coupling reduces the transition temperature of some types of spin triplet superconductivity, which is similar to the case that magnetic field reduces the spin singlet superconductivity due to Zeeman splitting. It is well known that Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state of spin singlet superconductivity is realized near the Pauli limit (or Chandrasekhar-Clogston limit) of external magnetic field. In FFLO state the amplitude of the order parameter is not uniform in space. In this paper we study the FFLO state in the spin triplet superc…
Noncentrosymmetric materials are promising paradigm to explore unconventional superconductivity. In particular, several Re containing noncentrosymmetric materials have attracted considerable attention due to a superconducting state with a broken time reversal symmetry. A comprehensive study on the superconducting ground state of NbReSi was investigated using magnetization, resistivity, and muon spin rotation/relaxation measurements. Zero field muon spectroscopy results showed the absence of any spontaneous magnetic field below the superconducting transition temperature, T$ _{c} $ = 6.29 K, ind…
We report measurements of London penetration depth $λ(T)$ for the noncentrosymmetric superconductor BiPd by using a tunnel diode oscillator. Pronounced anisotropic behavior is observed in the low-temperature penetration depth; the in-plane penetration depth $λ_{ac}(T)$ follows an exponential decrease, but the interplane penetration depth $λ_b(T)$ shows power-law-type behavior. The superfluid density $ρ_s(T)$, converted from the penetration depth $λ(T)$, is best fitted by an anisotropic two-band BCS model. We argue that such a complex order parameter is attributed to the admixture of spin-singl…
In topological materials, Dirac fermions can split into two Weyl fermions with opposite chiralities due to the breaking of space inversion symmetry, while in non-centrosymmetric superconductors, novel superconducting electron pairing mechanisms arise because of the antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling. In this work, we report the pressure-introduced superconductivity in a typical noncentrosymmetric Weyl semimetal LaAlX (X=Si and Ge). Superconductivity was observed at around 65 GPa without structural phase transition. A typical dome-shape phase diagram is obtained with the maximum Tc of 2.5 K (2.1…
Mixing of spin singlet and spin triplet superconducting pairing state is expected in noncentrosymmetric superconductors (NCS) due to the inherent presence of Rashba-type antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling. Unlike low symmetry (tetragonal or monoclinic) NCS, parity is isotropicaly broken in space for cubic NCS and can additionally lead to the coexistence of magnetic and superconducting state under certain conditions. Motivated with such enriched possibility of unconventional superconducting phases in cubic NCS we are reporting successful formation of single crystalline cubic noncentrosymmetric P…
Strength of Rashba type antisymmetric spin orbit coupling has the crucial effect on superconducting and normal state properties in noncentrosymmetric (NCS) superconductors. This can be seen on various anisotropic properties of the system. For a system with lowered crystalline symmetry as in noncentrosymmetric crystals, the superconducting pairing state can have correlation to the normal state properties. In our earlier work we have shown that alfa-BiPd which has a monoclinic (P_21) structure with the absence of the centre of inversion exhibits bulk superconductivity at 3.8 K. In order to under…
We report the discovery of superconductivity in a series of noncentrosymmetric compounds La$_4$$TX$ ($T$ = Ru, Rh, Ir; $X$ = Al, In), which have a cubic crystal structure with space group $F\bar{4}3m$. La$_4$RuAl, La$_4$RhAl, La$_4$IrAl, La$_4$RuIn and La$_4$IrIn exhibit bulk superconducting transitions with critical temperatures $T_c$ of 1.77 K, 3.05 K, 1.54 K, 0.58 K and 0.93 K, respectively. The specific heat of the La$_4$$T$Al compounds are consistent with an $s$-wave model with a fully open superconducting gap. In all cases, the upper critical fields are well described by the Werthamer-He…
We report an investigation of the superconducting properties of the hexagonal noncentrosymmetric compound LaPdIn. Electrical resistivity, specific heat and ac susceptibility measurements demonstrate the presence of bulk superconductivity below $T_c$ = 1.6 K. The specific heat, together with the penetration depth measured using transverse-field muon spin rotation and the tunnel diode oscillator based method, are well described by single gap $s$-wave superconductivity, with a gap magnitude of 1.8$k_BT_c$. From zero-field muon spin relaxation results no evidence is found for the spontaneous emerg…
The failure of spatial inversion symmetry in noncentrosymmetric materials introduces two different types of spin-independent and spin-dependent electron hopping. The spin-dependent term can be translated into a quasi-spin-orbit coupling and may affect the electronic structure. In the locally noncentrosymmetric crystals, the presence of a sublattice degree of freedom generates a distinction between the inter- and intra-sublattice hopping integrals. The spin-dependent part of the former (latter), which is even (odd) under parity, is called symmetric (antisymmetric) quasi-spin-orbit coupling. Her…
Recently the influence of antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling has been studied in novel topological superconductors such as half-Heuslers and artificial hetero-structures. We investigate the effect of Rashba and/or Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings on the band structure and topological properties of a two-dimensional noncentrosymetric superconductor. For this goal, the topological helical edge modes are analyzed for different spin-orbit couplings as well as for several superconducting pairing symmetries. To explore the transport properties, we examine the response of the spin-polarized edge state…
In noncentrosymmetric superconductors (NCSs), the inversion symmetry (IS) is most commonly broken by an antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling (SOC) removing the spin degeneracy and splitting the Fermi surface (FS) into two branches. A two component condensate is then produced with a doublet pair potential mixing an even singlet and an odd triplet. When the triplet and the singlet strengths are comparable, the pair potential can have rich nodes. The angular line nodes (ALNs) are associated with strong anisotropy and they are widely studied in the literature. When the anisotropy is not strong, they …
We report 29Si-NMR study on a single crystal of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeIrSi3 without an inversion symmetry along the c-axis. The 29Si-Knight shift measurements under pressure have revealed that the spin susceptibility for the ab-plane decreases slightly below Tc, whereas along the c-axis it does not change at all. The result can be accounted for by the spin susceptibility in the superconducting state being dominated by the strong antisymmetric (Rashba-type) spin-orbit interaction that originates from the absence of an inversion center along the c-axis and it being much larger than …
A notable characteristic of PbTaSe$_2$, a prototypical noncentrosymmetric (NCS) superconductor, is that its superconductivity can be modulated through a structural transition under hydrostatic pressure [Phys. Rev. B 95, 224508 (2017)]. Here we report on simultaneous pressure-sensitive point-contact Andreev reflection (PCAR) spectroscopy and bulk resistance measurements on PbTaSe$_2$, to elucidate the nature of the surface and bulk superconductivity and their evolution with hydrostatic pressure. It is found that in high pressure region the superconducting gap opening temperature $T_c^A$ is sign…
SrAuSi$_3$ is a noncentrosymmetric superconductor (NCS) with $T_c$ = 1.54 K, which to date has been studied only via macroscopic techniques. By combining nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and muon-spin rotation ($μ$SR) measurements we investigate both the normal and the superconducting phase of SrAuSi$_3$ at a local level. In the normal phase, our data indicate a standard metallic behavior with weak electron correlations and a Korringa constant $S_\mathrm{exp} = 1.31 \times 10^{-5}$ sK. The latter, twice the theoretical value, can be justified by the Moriya theory of exchange enhancement. In th…
Stimulated by recent studies of superconductivity and magnetism with local and global broken inversion symmetry, we investigate the superconductivity in magnetic multipole states in locally noncentrosymmetric metals. We consider a one-dimensional zigzag chain with sublattice-dependent antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling and suppose three magnetic multipole orders: monopole order, dipole order, and quadrupole order. It is demonstrated that the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer state, the pair-density wave (PDW) state, and the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state are stabilized by these multipole…
We report a comprehensive study of the centrosymmetric Re$_3$B and noncentrosymmetric Re$_7$B$_3$ superconductors. At a macroscopic level, their bulk superconductivity (SC), with $T_c$ = 5.1 K (Re$_3$B) and 3.3 K (Re$_7$B$_3$), was characterized via electrical-resistivity, magnetization, and heat-capacity measurements, while their microscopic superconducting properties were investigated by means of muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR). In both Re$_3$B and Re$_7$B$_3$ the low-$T$ zero-field electronic specific heat and the superfluid density (determined via tranverse-field $μ$SR) suggest a nod…
We illuminate the superconducting phases in [001]-grown-noncentrosymmetric quantum wells with an anisotropic spin-orbit coupling in the presence of on-site Hubbard interaction. Within the random phase approximation, we investigate the spin-fluctuation-mediated pairing in the presence of Rashba/Dresselhaus antisymmetric spin-orbit couplings. Although the existence of spatial inversion symmetry desires a dominant d-wave pairing for all filling levels, a broken inversion symmetry generates antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling and mixes the even- and odd-parity in the superconducting gap. We study th…
We investigate the order parameter of noncentrosymmetric superconductors Li$_2$Pd$_3$B and Li$_2$Pt$_3$B via the behavior of the penetration depth $λ(T)$. The low-temperature penetration depth shows BCS-like behavior in Li$_2$Pd$_3$B, while in Li$_2$Pt$_3$B it follows a linear temperature dependence. We propose that broken inversion symmetry and the accompanying antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling, which admix spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairing, are responsible for this behavior. The triplet contribution is weak in Li$_2$Pd$_3$B, leading to a wholly open but anisotropic gap. The significantly…
We report the discovery of superconductivity in noncentrosymmetric NbReSi, which crystallizes in a hexagonal ZrNiAl-type crystal structure with space group $P\bar{6}2m$ (No.~189). Bulk superconductivity, with $T_c$ = 6.5 K was characterized via electrical-resistivity, magnetization, and heat-capacity measurements. The low-temperature electronic specific heat suggests a fully gapped superconducting state in NbReSi, while a large upper critical field of $μ_0H_\mathrm{c2}(0)$ $\sim$ 12.6 T is obtained, which is comparable to the weak-coupling Pauli limit. The electronic band-structure calculation…
