We explore the metric space of jets using public collider data from the CMS experiment. Starting from 2.3/fb of 7 TeV proton-proton collisions collected at the Large Hadron Collider in 2011, we isolate a sample of 1,690,984 central jets with transverse momentum above 375 GeV. To validate the performance of the CMS detector in reconstructing the energy flow of jets, we compare the CMS Open Data to corresponding simulated data samples for a variety of jet kinematic and substructure observables. Even without detector unfolding, we find very good agreement for track-based observables after using charged hadron subtraction to mitigate the impact of pileup. We perform a range of novel analyses, using the "energy mover's distance" (EMD) to measure the pairwise difference between jet energy flows. The EMD allows us to quantify the impact of detector effects, visualize the metric space of jets, extract correlation dimensions, and identify the most and least typical jet configurations. To facilitate future jet studies with CMS Open Data, we make our datasets and analysis code available, amounting to around two gigabytes of distilled data and one hundred gigabytes of simulation files.
Recent measurements performed by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations on the Run 2 dataset are testing QCD with unprecedented precision. The wealth of data, an ever-improving experimental understanding of jets and photons, and novel measurements of jet substructure enable an improved understanding.
The latest CMS jet measurements in p-p collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, sensitive to small-x QCD physics, are discussed. These include inclusive forward jet and simultaneous forward-central jet production, as well as production ratios and azimuthal angle decorrelations of jets widely separated in rapidity.
An overview of the searches for heavy resonances that decay to leptons or quarks is presented. The results are based on the data collected by the ATLAS and CMS experiments in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13~\textrm{TeV}$, and include for the first time the entire LHC Run 2 data set.
We present predictions for the inclusive production of charm jets in proton-proton collisions at 2.76 and 5.02 TeV. The charm-quark is considered massless. In this scheme we find that the ratio of the next-to-leading order to the leading order cross section (K factor) is almost equal to one depending essentially on the choice of the renormalization and factorization scale. Adding non-pertubative corrections obtained from Pythia Monte Carlo calculations lead to reasonable agreement with experimental c-jet cross sections obtained by the CMS collaboration.
Recent CMS data significantly extend the direct search exclusion for supersymmetry. We examine the impact of such data on global fits of the constrained minimal supersymmetric standard model (CMSSM) to indirect and cosmological data. By simulating supersymmetric signal events at the LHC, we construct a likelihood map for the recent CMS data, validating it against the exclusion region calculated by the experiment itself. A previous CMSSM global fit is then re-weighted by our likelihood map. The CMS results nibble away at the high fit probability density region, transforming probability distribu…
Recent ATLAS data significantly extend the exclusion limits for supersymmetric particles. We examine the impact of such data on global fits of the constrained minimal supersymmetric standard model (CMSSM) to indirect and cosmological data. We calculate the likelihood map of the ATLAS search, taking into account systematic errors on the signal and on the background. We validate our calculation against the ATLAS determinaton of 95% confidence level exclusion contours. A previous CMSSM global fit is then re-weighted by the likelihood map, which takes a bite at the high probability density region …
The identification of b jets is a crucial issue to study and characterize various channels like top quark events and many new physics scenarios. Different b-tagging techniques are defined in CMS which benefit from the long life time, high mass and large momentum fraction of the b-hadron produced in b-quark jet. Effcient algorithms have been developed based on the measure of b-hadron secondary vertex or on tracks with a large impact parameter. Data collected in pp collisions at 7TeV in 2011 are used to estimate both the b-tagging effciency and the mistag rate from light flavor jets.
The CMS Collaboration has recently reported some excess events in final states with electrons and jets, in searches for leptoquarks and $W'$ bosons. Although these excesses may be due to some yet-to-be-understood background mismodeling, it is useful to seek realistic interpretations involving new particles that could generate such events. We show that resonant pair production of vector-like leptons that decay to an electron and two jets leads to kinematic distributions consistent with the CMS data.
The underlying event is an important part of high-energy collision events. In the event generators, the underlying event is tuned by fits to collision data. Usually, the underlying event observables are affected by the existence of extra jets and it is difficult to find a part of the phase space which is dominated by the underlying event. In this paper, we suggest to veto the jets in the considered region to disentangle these effects. The idea is verified to work on CMS Open Data. To our knowledge, it is the first time that such ideas are tested on real collision data.
Production of electroweak bosons, heavy quarks and jets in proton-proton collisions probe different aspects of QCD and are sensitive to the details of proton structure, expressed by parton distribution functions (PDFs). Precise measurements of cross sections of these processes are used by the CMS experiment to demonstrate the impact of the LHC data on the PDFs and their precision. The measurements of muon charge asymmetry in W-boson production at a center-of-mass of 7 and 8 TeV is used to improve the constraints on the valence-quark distributions, while the associated production of W-boson and…
We report on our NLL BFKL studies of Mueller-Navelet jets. We first perform a complete NLL BFKL analysis supplemented by a BLM renormalization scale fixing procedure, which is successfully compared with recent CMS data. Second, we argue for the need of a measurement of an asymmetric jet configuration in order to perform a valuable comparison with fixed order approaches. Third, we predict that the energy-momentum violation is rather tiny in the NLL BFKL approach, for an asymmetric jet configuration. Finally, we argue that the double parton scattering contribution is negligible in the kinematics…
Results by the CMS Collaboration on forward physics, diffraction, and physics in the small-$x$ limit of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), are presented. In particular, results on azimuthal angle decorrelations between two jets in events where two outermost jets are separated by a large rapidity interval are discussed. In addition, results based on the production of two jets separated by a large rapidity gap (interval void of radiation) are presented. These dijet production processes are expected to be sensitive to Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) evolution effects. We highlight results on incl…
The measurement of azimuthal correlations of Mueller-Navelet jets is generally considered as a decisive test to reveal the effect of BFKL dynamics at hadron colliders. The first experimental study of these correlations at the LHC has been recently performed by the CMS collaboration. We show that the ratios of cosine moments of the azimuthal distribution are successfully described within our next-to-leading logarithmic BFKL treatment. The whole set of CMS data for the azimuthal correlations can also be consistently described provided that one uses a larger renormalization/factorization scale th…
A cluster of soft displaced tracks corresponds to the dark matter co-annihilation regime. The long-lived regime is, in particular, motivated by the unexplored top partner physics. The background in this regime is extremely challenging to model using a traditional simulation method. We demonstrate the feasibility of handling the formidable background using the CMS Open Data. We perform this analysis to search for compressed and long-lived top partners in the 8 TeV CMS Open Data events with the integrated luminosity of 11.6 fb$^{-1}$ and obtain new limits. With 15-30 GeV mass splitting between t…
The CMS and ATLAS collaborations searched for Dark Matter (DM) particles directly produced in pair. The searches are performed using the full LHC Run-I dataset recorded with the CMS and ATLAS detectors in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. Signatures considered include those yielding energetic jets and large missing transverse momentum as well as electroweak bosons and heavy flavour quarks plus missing transverse energy. No deviation from SM background expectation was found and exclusion limits on DM production cross section were set.
We study quark and gluon jets separately using public collider data from the CMS experiment. Our analysis is based on 2.3/fb of proton-proton collisions at 7 TeV, collected at the Large Hadron Collider in 2011. We define two non-overlapping samples via a pseudorapidity cut -- central jets with |eta| < 0.65 and forward jets with |eta| > 0.65 -- and employ jet topic modeling to extract individual distributions for the maximally separable categories. Under certain assumptions, such as sample independence and mutual irreducibility, these categories correspond to "quark" and "gluon" jets, as given …
We describe recent results from CMS and TOTEM on hard diffraction, diffractive jets and jet gap jet events. We also give the first sensitivities and limits on quartic anomalous couplings and axion-like particles at high mass using the LHC as a $γγ$ collider. The predicted sensitivities with 300 fb$^{-1}$ are better by two or three orders of magnitude compared to the more standard methods at the LHC without measuring intact protons after collision
Semi-visible jets arise in strongly interacting dark sectors, where parton evolution includes dark sector emissions, resulting in jets overlapping with missing transverse momentum. The implementation of semi-visible jets is done using the Pythia Hidden valley module to duplicate the QCD sector showering. In this work, several jet substructure observables have been examined to compare semi-visible jets and light quark/gluon jets. These comparisons were performed using different dark hadron fraction in the semi-visible jets (signal). The extreme scenarios where signal consists either of entirely…
The most recent results on searches in lepton plus jet final states motivated by different models beyond the standard model are presented, using pp collision data collected by the ATLAS and CMS detectors during Run I and Run II at the CERN LHC. Leptoquarks and heavy Majorana neutrinos that arise in the left-right model are looked for in the final states with two leptons and two jets (ll + jj; l = e; mu; tau ). Heavy Majorana neutrinos are further investigated by relying on a composite-fermion scenario, considering two leptons and one large-radius jet (ll + J; l = e, mu), and in the context of …
Recent measurements based on jet production in high energy pp collisions at the CERN LHC with the CMS detector are reported. Specifically, the measurement of the inclusive jet production cross section as a function of the anti-$k_t$ distance parameter $R$ divided by the jet cross section at $R = 0.4$, is discussed. The cross section ratio is sensitive to various perturbative and non-perturbative treatments of the jet formation process in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). In the second study, the regimes of validity of the parton shower and matrix element approaches are tested on multijet events in…
The results from the CMS search for supersymmetric particles based on Run-2 data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV are summarized. Strong and weak production of SUSY scenarios are considered. Results presented include the searches for squarks and gluinos, direct production of charginos, neutralinos, and sleptons. These searches involve final state objects comprising jets, missing transverse momentum, electrons or muons, taus or photons, as well as long-lived particles. The data in these searches are found to be consistent with standard model predictions and no significant excess is…
A measurement of inclusive jet and dijet production cross sections is presented. Data from large hadron collider (LHC) proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 7 TeV, corresponding to $4.67 fb^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, have been collected with the compact muon solenoid (CMS) detector. Jets are reconstructed with the anti-$k_T$ clustering algorithm with size parameter $R=0.7$, extending to rapidity $|y|=2.5$, transverse momentum $p_{T}=$ 2 TeV, and dijet invariant mass $M_{JJ}=$ 5 TeV. The measured cross sections are corrected for detector effects and compared to perturbative QCD predictio…
The study of the production of two forward jets with a large interval of rapidity at hadron colliders was proposed by Mueller and Navelet as a possible test of the high energy dynamics of QCD. We analyze this process within a complete next-to-leading logarithm framework, supplemented by the use of the Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie procedure extended to the perturbative Regge dynamics, to find the optimal renormalization scale. This leads to a very good description of the recent CMS data at LHC for the azimuthal correlations of the jets.
We use public data from the CMS experiment to study the 2-prong substructure of jets. The CMS Open Data is based on 31.8/pb of 7 TeV proton-proton collisions recorded at the Large Hadron Collider in 2010, yielding a sample of 768,687 events containing a high-quality central jet with transverse momentum larger than 85 GeV. Using CMS's particle flow reconstruction algorithm to obtain jet constituents, we extract the 2-prong substructure of the leading jet using soft drop declustering. We find good agreement between results obtained from the CMS Open Data and those obtained from parton shower gen…
The CMS experiment recently reported an excess consistent with an invariant mass edge in opposite-sign same flavor (OSSF) leptons, when produced in conjunction with at least two jets and missing transverse momentum. We provide an interpretation of the edge in terms of (anti-)squark pair production followed by the `golden cascade' decay for one of the squarks: $\tilde q \rightarrow \tildeχ_2^0 q \to \tilde l l q \to \tildeχ_1^0 q l l$ in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). A simplified model involving binos, winos, an on-shell slepton, and the first two generations of squarks fits…
The splitting function is a universal property of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) which describes how energy is shared between partons. Despite its ubiquitous appearance in many QCD calculations, the splitting function cannot be measured directly since it always appears multiplied by a collinear singularity factor. Recently, however, a new jet substructure observable was introduced which asymptotes to the splitting function for sufficiently high jet energies. This provides a way to expose the splitting function through jet substructure measurements at the Large Hadron Collider. In this letter, we…
In this paper we describe a novel, model-independent technique of "rectangular aggregations" for mining the LHC data for hints of new physics. A typical (CMS) search now has hundreds of signal regions, which can obscure potentially interesting anomalies. Applying our technique to the two CMS jets+MET SUSY searches, we identify a set of previously overlooked $\sim 3σ$ excesses. Among these, four excesses survive tests of inter- and intra-search compatibility, and two are especially interesting: they are largely overlapping between the jets+MET searches and are characterized by low jet multiplic…
We construct an evolution equation for the invariant-mass distribution of light-quark and gluon jets in the framework of QCD resummation. The solution of the evolution equation exhibits a behavior consistent with Tevatron CDF data: the jet distribution vanishes in the small invariant-mass limit, and its peak moves toward the high invariant-mass region with the jet energy. We also construct an evolution equation for the energy profile of the light-quark and gluon jets in the similar framework. The solution shows that the energy accumulates faster within a light-quark jet cone than within a gluo…
We examine experimental signatures of TeV-mass black hole formation in heavy ion collisions at the LHC. We find that the black hole production results in a complete disappearance of all very high $p_T$ ({$> 500$} GeV) back-to-back correlated di-jets of total mass {$M > M_f \sim 1$}TeV. We show that the subsequent Hawking-decay produces multiple hard mono-jets and discuss their detection. We study the possibility of cold black hole remnant (BHR) formation of mass $\sim M_f$ and the experimental distinguishability of scenarios with BHRs and those with complete black hole decay. Finally we point …
Final states with leptons, jets and missing transverse energy are a promising way to detect Supersymmetry at the Large Hadron Collider. Results of simulation studies performed by the CMS and ATLAS collaborations are presented. The discovery of new physics is shown to be possible within the first fb^-1 of collected integrated luminosity.
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiment has successfully completed data taking at center of mass (COM) energy 7 TeV in 2011 and very recently for 8 TeV. Measurement of cross sections predicted by the standard model were the main tasks in the beginning. The inclusive jet cross section and dijet mass measurement is already done at 7 TeV energy by Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector with integrated luminosity 5 fb$^{-1}$. In these measurement one needs to understand and measure precisely the kinematic properties of jets which involve many theoretical and experimental issues. The goal of this …
Experimental findings of CMS on properties of jets and underlying events at high multiplicities in proton-proton interactions at 7 TeV are interpreted as an indication of increasing role of central collisions with small impact parameters. We find an indication that the rates of different hard processes observed by CMS and ALICE universally depend on underlying event charged-particles multiplicity until it becomes four times more than average. It is shown that the increase of the overlap area of colliding protons is not sufficient for explanation of the rate of jet production in events with cha…
We study the observability of the squarks and gluinos in CMS at LHC. Classical E_T^miss + jets final state as well as a number of additional multilepton signatures (0 leptons, 1 lepton, 2 leptons of the same sign, 2 leptons of the opposite sign and 3 leptons) are investigated . The detection of these sparticles relies on the observation of an excess of events over Standard Model background expectations. The study is made in the framework of a minimal SU(5) mSUGRA model as a function of m_0, m_1/2 for 4 sets of model parameters : tan(beta) = 2 or 35 and sign(mu) = +/- 1 and for fixed value of A…
We discuss the impact for light neutralinos in an effective Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model of the recent results presented by the CMS and ATLAS Collaborations at the CERN Large Hadron Collider for a search of supersymmetry in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 35 inverse pb. We find that, in the specific case of light neutralinos, efficiencies for the specific signature searched by ATLAS (jets+missing transverse energy and an isolated lepton) imply a lower sensitivity compared to CMS (which searches for jets +mi…
With its enormous number of produced neutrinos the LHC is a prime facility to study the behaviour of high-energy neutrinos. In this paper we propose a novel search strategy for identifying neutrino scattering via displaced appearing jets in the high granularity calorimeter (HGCAL) of the CMS endcap in the high luminosity run of the LHC. We demonstrate in a cut-and-count based analysis how the enormous hadronic background can be reduced while keeping most of the neutrino signal. This paper serves as a proof-of-principle study to illustrate the feasibility of the first direct observation of high…
We present an estimation of the contribution of double parton scattering (DPS) for jets widely separated in rapidity and for four-jet sample. In the case of four-jet production we calculate cross section for both single-parton scattering (SPS) using the code ALPGEN as well as for DPS in LO collinear approach. The DPS contribution is calculated within the so-called factorized Ansatz and each step of DPS is calculated in the LO collinear approximation. We show that the relative (with respect to SPS dijets and to the BFKL Mueller-Navelet (MN) jets) contribution of DPS is growing at large rapidity…

We investigate the forward-jet energy spectrum within the Color Glass Condensate framework at 5 TeV center-of-mass energy. In particular, we focus on the kinematic range covered by the CMS-CASTOR calorimeter. We show that our saturation-model calculations are compatible with the CASTOR measurements and that to optimally reproduce the data, effects of multi-parton interactions need to be included. We predict a significant nuclear suppression - reaching down to 50% at the lowest considered jet energies $E_{\rm jet} \sim 500 \, {\rm GeV}$.
