Assuming that Brouwers Conjecture the upper bound for the sum of t< n largest eigenvalues of Laplacian graph on n vertices true for n <n_0, we prove the Brouwers Conjecture BC for n > n_0 for some fixed n_0
We show that for a sequence of random graphs Brouwer's conjecture holds true with probability tending to one as the number of vertices tends to infinity. Surprisingly, it was found that a similar statement holds true for weighted graphs with possible negative weights as well. For graphs with a fixed number of vertices, the result implies that there are constants $C>0$ and $n_{0}$ such that if $n\geq n_{0}$ then among all $2^{n \choose 2}$ graphs with $n$ vertices, at least $\left(1-\exp\left(-Cn\right)\right)2^{n \choose 2}$ graphs satisfy Brouwer's conjecture.
Highly regular graphs for which not all regularities are explainable by symmetries are fascinating creatures. Some of them like, e.g., the line graph of W.~Kantor's non-classical $\mathrm{GQ}(5^2,5)$, are stumbling stones for existing implementations of graph isomorphism tests. They appear to be extremely rare and even once constructed it is difficult to prove their high regularity. Yet some of them, like the McLaughlin graph on $275$ vertices and Ivanov's graph on $256$ vertices are of profound beauty. This alone makes it an attractive goal to strive for their complete classification or, fail…
In this paper, we study a conjecture of Andries E. Brouwer from 1996 regarding the minimum number of vertices of a strongly regular graph whose removal disconnects the graph into non-singleton components. We show that strongly regular graphs constructed from copolar spaces and from the more general spaces called $Δ$-spaces are counterexamples to Brouwer's Conjecture. Using J.I. Hall's characterization of finite reduced copolar spaces, we find that the triangular graphs $T(m)$, the symplectic graphs $Sp(2r,q)$ over the field $\mathbb{F}_q$ (for any $q$ prime power), and the strongly regular gra…
Andries Brouwer maintains a public database of existence results for strongly regular graphs on $n\leq 1300$ vertices. We implemented most of the infinite families of graphs listed there in the open-source software Sagemath, as well as provided constructions of the "sporadic" cases, to obtain a graph for each set of parameters with known examples. Besides providing a convenient way to verify these existence results from the actual graphs, it also extends the database to higher values of $n$.
We present a generalization of Brouwer's conjectural family of inequalities -- a popular family of inequalities in spectral graph theory bounding the partial sum of the Laplacian eigenvalues of graphs -- for the case of abstract simplicial complexes of any dimension. We prove that this family of inequalities holds for shifted simplicial complexes, which generalize threshold graphs, and give tighter bounds (linear in the dimension of the complexes) for simplicial trees. We prove that the conjecture holds for the the first, second, and last partial sums for all simplicial complexes, generalizing…

Let $α'$ and $μ_i$ denote the matching number of a non-empty simple graph $G$ with $n$ vertices and the $i$-th smallest eigenvalue of its Laplacian matrix, respectively. In this paper, we prove a tight lower bound $$α' \ge \min\left\{\Big\lceil\frac{μ_2}{μ_n} (n -1)\Big\rceil,\ \ \Big\lceil\frac{1}{2}(n-1)\Big\rceil \right\}.$$ This bound strengthens the result of Brouwer and Haemers who proved that if $n$ is even and $2μ_2 \ge μ_n$, then $G$ has a perfect matching. A graph $G$ is factor-critical if for every vertex $v\in V(G)$, $G-v$ has a perfect matching. We also prove an analogue to the re…
We consider simple loopless finite undirected graphs. Such a graph is called strongly regular with parameter set (v,k,l,m), for short a srg(v,k,l,m), iff it has exactly v vertices, each of them has exactly k neighbours, and the number of common neighbours of any two different vertices is l if they are neighbours and m otherwise. The G2(4) graph is a well-known srg(416,100,36,20). In this article, we explicitly construct it and a certain subgraph E induced by 320 vertices in the same way as in an older article by this author. We discover some interesting properties of E and derive five strongly…
Given a connected graph $G$, the toughness $τ_G$ is defined as the minimum value of the ratio $|S|/ω_{G-S}$, where $S$ ranges over all vertex cut sets of $G$, and $ω_{G-S}$ is the number of connected components in the subgraph $G-S$ obtained by deleting all vertices of $S$ from $G$. In this paper, we provide a lower bound for the toughness $τ_G$ in terms of the maximum degree, minimum degree and normalized Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$. This can be viewed as a slight generalization of Brouwer's toughness conjecture, which was confirmed by Gu (2021). Furthermore, we give a characterization of th…
The work in this thesis concerns the investigation of eigenvalues of the Laplacian matrix, normalized Laplacian matrix, signless Laplacian matrix and distance signless Laplacian matrix of graphs. In Chapter 1, we present a brief introduction of spectral graph theory with some definitions. Chapter $2$ deals with the sum of $ k $ largest Laplacian eigenvalues $ S_{k}(G) $ of graph $ G $ and Brouwer's conjecture. We obtain the upper bounds for $ S_{k}(G) $ for some classes of graphs and use them to verify Brouwer's conjecture for these classes of graphs. Also, we prove Brouwer's conjecture for mo…
For a fixed graph H with t vertices, an H-factor of a graph G with n vertices, where t divides n, is a collection of vertex disjoint (not necessarily induced) copies of H in G covering all vertices of G. We prove that for a fixed tree T on t vertices and ε> 0, the random graph G_{n,p}, with n a multiple of t, with high probability contains a family of edge-disjoint T-factors covering all but an ε-fraction of its edges, as long as ε^4 n p >> (log n)^2. Assuming stronger divisibility conditions, the edge probability can be taken down to p > (C log n)/n. A similar packing result is proved also fo…
Suppose we have a network that is represented by a graph $G$. Potentially a fire (or other type of contagion) might erupt at some vertex of $G$. We are able to respond to this outbreak by establishing a firebreak at $k$ other vertices of $G$, so that the fire cannot pass through these fortified vertices. The question that now arises is which $k$ vertices will result in the greatest number of vertices being saved from the fire, assuming that the fire will spread to every vertex that is not fully behind the $k$ vertices of the firebreak. This is the essence of the {\sc Firebreak} decision proble…
A Latin square of order $n$ is an $n \times n$ array filled with $n$ symbols such that each symbol appears only once in every row or column and a transversal is a collection of cells which do not share the same row, column or symbol. The study of Latin squares goes back more than 200 years to the work of Euler. One of the most famous open problems in this area is a conjecture of Ryser-Brualdi-Stein from 60s which says that every Latin square of order $n\times n$ contains a transversal of order $n-1$. In this paper we prove the existence of a transversal of order $n-O(\log{n}/\log{\log{n}})$, i…
In this paper, we address the following problem due to Frankl and Füredi (1984). What is the maximum number of hyperedges in an $r$-uniform hypergraph with $n$ vertices, such that every set of $r+1$ vertices contains $0$ or exactly $2$ hyperedges? They solved this problem for $r=3$. For $r=4$, a partial solution is given by Gunderson and Semeraro (2017) when $n=q+1$ for some prime power number $q\equiv3\pmod{4} $. Assuming the existence of skew-symmetric conference matrices for every order divisible by $4$, we give a solution for $n\equiv0\pmod{4} $ and for $n\equiv3\pmod{4}$.
A class of countable infinite graphs with unbounded vertex degree is considered. In these graphs, the vertices of large degree `repel' each other, which means that the path distance between two such vertices cannot be smaller than a certain function of their degrees. Assuming that this function increases sufficiently fast, we prove that the number of finite connected subgraphs (animals) of order N containing a given vertex x is exponentially bounded in N for N belonging to an infinite subset N_x of natural numbers. Under a less restrictive condition, the same result is obtained for the number …
A seminal result of Hajnal and Szemerédi states that if a graph $G$ with $n$ vertices has minimum degree $δ(G) \ge (r-1)n/r$ for some integer $r \ge 2$, then $G$ contains a $K_r$-factor, assuming $r$ divides $n$. Extremal examples which show optimality of the bound on $δ(G)$ are very structured and, in particular, contain large independent sets. In analogy to the Ramsey-Turán theory, Balogh, Molla, and Sharifzadeh initiated the study of how the absence of such large independent sets influences sufficient minimum degree. We show the following two related results: $\bullet$ For any $r > \ell \ge…
A bootstrap percolation process on a graph G is an "infection" process which evolves in rounds. Initially, there is a subset of infected nodes and in each subsequent round every uninfected node which has at least r infected neighbours becomes infected and remains so forever. The parameter r > 1 is fixed. We consider this process in the case where the underlying graph is an inhomogeneous random graph whose kernel is of rank 1. Assuming that initially every vertex is infected independently with probability p > 0, we provide a law of large numbers for the number of vertices that will have been in…
We prove that the number of multigraphs with vertex set $\{1, \ldots, n\}$ such that every four vertices span at most nine edges is $a^{n^2 + o(n^2)}$ where $a$ is transcendental (assuming Schanuel's conjecture from number theory). This is an easy consequence of the solution to a related problem about maximizing the product of the edge multiplicities in certain multigraphs, and appears to be the first explicit (somewhat natural) question in extremal graph theory whose solution is transcendental. These results may shed light on a question of Razborov who asked whether there are conjectures or t…
We study kernelization (a kind of efficient preprocessing) for NP-hard problems on planar graphs. Our main result is a kernel of size at most 9k vertices for the Planar Maximum Nonseparating Independent Set problem. A direct consequence of this result is that Planar Connected Vertex Cover has no kernel with at most (9/8 - epsilon)k vertices, for any epsilon > 0, assuming P \ne NP. We also show a very simple 5k-vertices kernel for Planar Max Leaf, which results in a lower bound of (5/4 - epsilon)k vertices for the kernel of Planar Connected Dominating Set (also under P \ne NP). As a by-product …
A graph is called $P_t$-free if it does not contain the path on $t$ vertices as an induced subgraph. Let $H$ be a multigraph with the property that any two distinct vertices share at most one common neighbour. We show that the generating function for (list) graph homomorphisms from $G$ to $H$ can be calculated in subexponential time $2^{O\left(\sqrt{tn\log(n)}\right)}$ for $n=|V(G)|$ in the class of $P_t$-free graphs $G$. As a corollary, we show that the number of 3-colourings of a $P_t$-free graph $G$ can be found in subexponential time. On the other hand, no subexponential time algorithm exi…
We study the activation process in undirected graphs known as bootstrap percolation: a vertex is active either if it belongs to a set of initially activated vertices or if at some point it had at least r active neighbors, for a threshold r that is identical for all vertices. A contagious set is a vertex set whose activation results with the entire graph being active. Let m(G,r) be the size of a smallest contagious set in a graph G on n vertices. We examine density conditions that ensure m(G,r) = r for all r >= 2. With respect to the minimum degree, we prove that such a smallest possible contag…
We show, assuming the Strong Exponential Time Hypothesis, that for every $\varepsilon > 0$, approximating directed Diameter on $m$-arc graphs within ratio $7/4 - \varepsilon$ requires $m^{4/3 - o(1)}$ time. Our construction uses nonnegative edge weights but even holds for sparse digraphs, i.e., for which the number of vertices $n$ and the number of arcs $m$ satisfy $m = n \log^{O(1)} n$. This is the first result that conditionally rules out a near-linear time $5/3$-approximation for Diameter.
A bootstrap percolation process on a graph $G$ is an "infection" process which evolves in rounds. Initially, there is a subset of infected nodes and in each subsequent round each uninfected node which has at least $r$ infected neighbours becomes infected and remains so forever. The parameter $r\geq 2$ is fixed. Such processes have been used as models for the spread of ideas or trends within a network of individuals. We analyse bootstrap percolation process in the case where the underlying graph is an inhomogeneous random graph, which exhibits a power-law degree distribution, and initially ther…
