Fully convolutional neural networks (FCNs) have shown their advantages in the salient object detection task. However, most existing FCNs-based methods still suffer from coarse object boundaries. In this paper, to solve this problem, we focus on the complementarity between salient edge information and salient object information. Accordingly, we present an edge guidance network (EGNet) for salient object detection with three steps to simultaneously model these two kinds of complementary information in a single network. In the first step, we extract the salient object features by a progressive fusion way. In the second step, we integrate the local edge information and global location information to obtain the salient edge features. Finally, to sufficiently leverage these complementary features, we couple the same salient edge features with salient object features at various resolutions. Benefiting from the rich edge information and location information in salient edge features, the fused features can help locate salient objects, especially their boundaries more accurately. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method performs favorably against the state-of-the-art methods on six widely used datasets without any pre-processing and post-processing. The source code is available at http: //mmcheng.net/egnet/.
Video salient object detection (VSOD), as a fundamental computer vision problem, has been extensively discussed in the last decade. However, all existing works focus on addressing the VSOD problem in 2D scenarios. In this paper, we aim to tackle the video salient object detection problem for panoramic videos, with their corresponding ambisonic audios. A multimodal fusion module equipped with two pseudo-siamese audio-visual context fusion (AC…

Owing to the difficulties of mining spatial-temporal cues, the existing approaches for video salient object detection (VSOD) are limited in understanding complex and noisy scenarios, and often fail in inferring prominent objects. To alleviate such shortcomings, we propose a simple yet efficient architecture, termed Guidance and Teaching Network (GTNet), to independently distil effective spatial and temporal cues with implicit guidance and explicit teaching at feature- and decision-level, respectively. To be specific, we (a) introduce a temporal modulator to implicitly bridge features from moti…

Beneficial from Fully Convolutional Neural Networks (FCNs), saliency detection methods have achieved promising results. However, it is still challenging to learn effective features for detecting salient objects in complicated scenarios, in which i) non-salient regions may have "salient-like" appearance; ii) the salient objects may have different-looking regions. To handle these complex scenarios, we propose a Feature Guide Network which exploits the nature of low-level and high-level features to i) make foreground and background regions more distinct and suppress the non-salient regions which …

Fully Convolutional Neural Network (FCN) has been widely applied to salient object detection recently by virtue of high-level semantic feature extraction, but existing FCN based methods still suffer from continuous striding and pooling operations leading to loss of spatial structure and blurred edges. To maintain the clear edge structure of salient objects, we propose a novel Edge-guided Non-local FCN (ENFNet) to perform edge guided feature learning for accurate salient object detection. In a specific, we extract hierarchical global and local information in FCN to incorporate non-local feature…

The multi-modal salient object detection model based on RGB-D information has better robustness in the real world. However, it remains nontrivial to better adaptively balance effective multi-modal information in the feature fusion phase. In this letter, we propose a novel gated recoding network (GRNet) to evaluate the information validity of the two modes, and balance their influence. Our framework is divided into three phases: perception phase, recoding mixing phase and feature integration phase. First, A perception encoder is adopted to extract multi-level single-modal features, which lays t…
The reasonable employment of RGB and depth data show great significance in promoting the development of computer vision tasks and robot-environment interaction. However, there are different advantages and disadvantages in the early and late fusion of the two types of data. Besides, due to the diversity of object information, using a single type of data in a specific scenario tends to result in semantic misleading. Based on the above considerations, we propose an adaptively-cooperative fusion network (ACFNet) with ResinRes structure for salient object detection. This structure is designed to fl…
In this paper, we propose an image matting framework called Salient Image Matting to estimate the per-pixel opacity value of the most salient foreground in an image. To deal with a large amount of semantic diversity in images, a trimap is conventionally required as it provides important guidance about object semantics to the matting process. However, creating a good trimap is often expensive and timeconsuming. The SIM framework simultaneously deals with the challenge of learning a wide range of semantics and salient object types in a fully automatic and an end to end manner. Specifically, our …

Fixation prediction (FP) in panoramic contents has been widely investigated along with the booming trend of virtual reality (VR) applications. However, another issue within the field of visual saliency, salient object detection (SOD), has been seldom explored in 360° (or omnidirectional) images due to the lack of datasets representative of real scenes with pixel-level annotations. Toward this end, we collect 107 equirectangular panoramas with challenging scenes and multiple object classes. Based on the consistency between FP and explicit saliency judgements, we further manually annotate 1,165 …
We solve the problem of salient object detection by investigating how to expand the role of pooling in convolutional neural networks. Based on the U-shape architecture, we first build a global guidance module (GGM) upon the bottom-up pathway, aiming at providing layers at different feature levels the location information of potential salient objects. We further design a feature aggregation module (FAM) to make the coarse-level semantic information well fused with the fine-level features from the top-down pathway. By adding FAMs after the fusion operations in the top-down pathway, coarse-level …
In this paper, we aim to develop an efficient and compact deep network for RGB-D salient object detection, where the depth image provides complementary information to boost performance in complex scenarios. Starting from a coarse initial prediction by a multi-scale residual block, we propose a progressively guided alternate refinement network to refine it. Instead of using ImageNet pre-trained backbone network, we first construct a lightweight depth stream by learning from scratch, which can extract complementary features more efficiently with less redundancy. Then, different from the existing…

It is driven by Swin Transformer to extract the hierarchical features, boosted by attention mechanism to bridge the gap between two modalities, and guided by edge information to sha…

Existing WSOD methods take various techniques to pursue single "high-quality" pseudo label from low-cost annotations and then develop their saliency networks. Salient Object Detection is the task of predicting the human attended region in a given scene. Fusing depth information has been proven effective in this task. The main challenge of this problem is how to aggregate the complementary information from RGB modality and depth modality. However, conventional deep models heavily rely on CNN feature extractors, and the long-range contextual dependencies are usually ignored. In this work, we propose Dual Swin-Transformer based Mutual Interactive Network. We adopt Swin-Transformer as the feature extractor for both RGB and depth modality to model the lo…

Feature detection is an important procedure for image matching, where unsupervised feature detection methods are the detection approaches that have been mostly studied recently, including the ones that are based on repeatability requirement to define loss functions, and the ones that attempt to use descriptor matching to drive the optimization of the pipelines. For the former type, mean square error (MSE) is usually used which cannot provide strong constraint for training and can make the model easy to be stuck into the collapsed solution. For the later one, due to the down sampling operation …

Such methods always evenly detect all "potentially significant regions" and unable to highlight the key salient object, resulting in detection failure of dynamic scenes. In this paper, based on the fact that salient areas in videos are relatively small and concentrated, we propose a \textbf{key salient object re-augmentation method (KSORA) using top-down semantic knowl…

Since the wide employment of deep learning frameworks in video salient object detection, the accuracy of the recent approaches has made stunning progress. In this paper, to simplify the network and maintain the accuracy, we present a lightweight network tailored for video salient object detection through the spatiotemporal knowledge…

An ideal description for a given video should fix its gaze on salient and representative content, which is capable of distinguishing this video from others. However, the distribution of different words is unbalanced in video captioning datasets, where distinctive words for describing video-specific salient objects are far less than common words such as 'a' 'the' and 'person'. The dataset bias often results in recognition error or detail deficiency of salient but unusual objects. To address this issue, we propose a novel learning strategy called Information Loss, which focuses on the relationsh…
