The free energy landscape of mean field marginal glasses is ultrametric. We demonstrate that this feature remains in finite three dimensional systems by finding sets of minima which are nearby in configuration space. By calculating the distance between these nearby minima, we produce a small region of the distance metric. This metric exhibits a clear hierarchical structure and shows the signature of an ultrametric space. That such a hierarchy exists for the jamming energy landscape provides direct evidence for the existence of a marginal phase along the zero temperature jamming line.
We present the study of the landscape structure of athermal soft spheres both as a function of the packing fraction and of the energy. We find that, on approaching the jamming transition, the number of different configurations available to the system has a steep increase and that a hierarchical organization of the landscape emerges. We use the knowledge of the structure of the landscape to predict the values of thermodynamic observables on the edge of the transition.
We experimentally investigate the clogging and jamming of interacting paramagnetic colloids driven through a quenched disordered landscape of fixed obstacles. When the particles are forced to cross a single aperture between two obstacles, we find an intermittent dynamics characterized by an exponential distribution of burst size. At the collective level, we observe that quenched disorder decreases the particle ow, but it also greatly enhances the "faster is slower" effect, that occurs when increasing the particle speed. Further, we show that clogging events may be controlled by tuning the pair…
An exact description of the complete jamming landscape is developed for a system of hard discs of diameter $σ$, confined between two lines separated by a distance $1+\sqrt{3/4} < H/σ< 2$. By considering all possible local packing arrangements, the generalized ensemble partition function of jammed states is obtained using the transfer matrix method, which allows us to calculate the configurational entropy and the equation of state for the packings. Exploring the relationship between structural order and packing density, we find that the geometric frustration between local packing environments p…
Glasses are amorphous solids whose constituent particles are caged by their neighbors and thus cannot flow. This sluggishness is often ascribed to the free energy landscape containing multiple minima (basins) separated by high barriers. Here we show, using theory and numerical simulation, that the landscape is much rougher than is classically assumed. Deep in the glass, it undergoes a "roughness transition" to fractal basins. This brings about isostaticity at jamming and marginality of glassy states near jamming. Critical exponents for the basin width, the weak force distribution, and the spat…
Theoretical studies of stretching proteins with slipknots reveal a surprising growth of their unfolding times when the stretching force crosses an intermediate threshold. This behavior arises as a consequence of the existence of alternative unfolding routes that are dominant at different force ranges. Responsible for longer unfolding times at higher forces is the existence of an intermediate, metastable configuration where the slipknot is jammed. Simulations are performed with a coarsed grained model with further quantification using a refined description of the geometry of the slipknots. The …
We numerically examine the transport of active run-and-tumble particles driven with a drift force over random disordered landscapes comprised of fixed obstacles. For increasing run lengths, the net particle transport initially increases before reaching a maximum and decreasing at larger run lengths. The transport reduction is associated with the formation of cluster or living crystal states that become locally jammed or clogged by the obstacles. We also find that the system dynamically jams at lower particle densities when the run length is increased. Our results indicate that there is an opti…
We provide a comprehensive picture of the jamming phase diagram by connecting the athermal, granular ensemble of jammed states and the equilibrium fluid through the inherent structure paradigm for a system hard discs confined to a narrow channel. The J-line is shown to be divided into packings that are thermodynamically accessible from the equilibrium fluid and inaccessible packings. The J-point is found to occur at the transition between these two sets of packings and is located at the maximum the inherent structure distribution. A general thermodynamic argument suggests that the density of t…
By exploring the properties of the energy landscape of a bidisperse system of soft harmonic disks in two dimensions we determine the thermal jamming transition. To be specific, we study whether the ground state of the system where the particle do not overlap can be reached within a reasonable time. Starting with random initial configurations, the energy landscape is probed by energy minimization steps as in case of athermal jamming and in addition steps where an energy barrier can be crossed with a small but non-zero probability. For random initial conditions we find that as a function of pack…
We determine the capillary attraction and equilibrium configurations of particles trapped at a liquid-fluid interface due to the pinning of their contact-line. We calculate analytically the asymptotic interaction energy between two particles and, numerically, the multi-body energy landscape for up to four contacting particles. Our results are consistent with recent experiments. We show that a system composed of a large number of such particles behaves as a jammed system.
The complex physics of glass forming systems is controlled by the structure of the low energy portions of their potential energy landscapes. Here, we report that a modified metadynamics algorithm efficiently explores and samples low energy regions of such high-dimensional landscapes. In the energy landscape for a model foam, our algorithm finds and descends meandering `canyons' in the landscape, which contain dense clusters of energy minima along their floors. Similar canyon structures in the energy landscapes of two model glass formers -- hard sphere fluids and the Kob-Andersen glass -- allow…
Inspired by protein folding, we introduce funnels into the complex cost function landscapes of two processes, the tuning of networks, and the jamming of ideal spheres. In both processes, geometrical frustration plays a role -- tuning pressure differences between pairs of target nodes far from the source in a flow network impedes tuning of nearby pairs more than the reverse process, while unjamming the system in one region can make it more difficult to unjam elsewhere. By modifying the cost functions to control the order in which functions are tuned or regions unjam, we smooth out local minima …
Gradient descent dynamics in complex energy landscapes, i.e. featuring multiple minima, finds application in many different problems, from soft matter to machine learning. Here, we analyze one of the simplest examples, namely that of soft repulsive particles in the limit of infinite spatial dimension $d$. The gradient descent dynamics then displays a jamming transition: at low density, it reaches zero-energy states in which particles' overlaps are fully eliminated, while at high density the energy remains finite and overlaps persist. At the transition, the dynamics becomes critical. In the $d\…
The Voronoi model is a popular tool for studying confluent living tissues. It exhibits an anomalous glassy behavior even at very low temperatures or weak active self-propulsion, and at zero temperature the model exhibits a disordered solid structure with no evidence of a rigidity transition. Here we investigate the properties of the energy landscape in this limit. We find two disordered solid phases that have similar structural features but that differ in the ultrametricity of their energy landscapes; the crossover between these two states shares phenomenological properties with a Gardner tran…
The glassy dynamics of soft harmonic spheres is often mapped onto the dynamics of hard spheres by considering an effective diameter for the soft particles and therefore an effective packing fraction. While in this approach the thermal fluctuations within valleys of the energy landscape are covered, the crossing of energy barriers from one valley into another usually is neglected. Here we argue - motivated by studies of the glass transition based on explorations of the energy landscape - that the crossing of energy barriers can be attributed by an effective decrease of the glass transition pack…
By finding local minima of an enthalpy-like energy, we can generate jammed packings of frictionless spheres under constant shear stress $σ$ and obtain the yield stress $σ_y$ by sampling the potential energy landscape. For three-dimensional systems with harmonic repulsion, $σ_y$ satisfies the finite size scaling with the limiting scaling relation $σ_y\simϕ- ϕ_{_{c,\infty}}$, where $ϕ_{_{c,\infty}}$ is the critical volume fraction of the jamming transition at $σ=0$ in the thermodynamic limit. The width or uncertainty of the yield stress decreases with decreasing $ϕ$ and decays to zero in the the…
For a system consisting of active soft spheres in three dimensions, we study the transition from a fluid where overlaps between particles can only occur for a short time after a collision to a state where clusters of overlapping particles persist for a long time. In order to determine the properties of the transition, we explore the energy landscape of the system in a similar way as it is done for the determination of the athermal or thermal jamming transition. Note that for zero temperature the competition of particles that attach to existing clusters and particles that detach due to thermal …
