Several coupled maps models are sketched and reviewed in this short communication. First, a discrete logistic type model that was proposed for the symbiotic interaction of two species. Second, a model of many of these symbiotic species evolving together under the coupling action of a global mean field. Third, a similar model with many of these species interacting in a symbiotic way with the nearest neighboring species in different kind of networks. The phenomena of bistability and synchronization is discussed in these models. Finally, some new results concerning the last model embedded in different topologies will be presented.
We study synchronization in large populations of coupled phase oscillators with time-delays, higher order interactions. With each of these effects individually giving rise to bistabiltiy between incoherence and synchronization via a subcriticality at the onset of synchronization and the development of a saddle node, we find that their combination yields another mechanism behind bistability, where supercriticality at onset may be maintained and instead the formation of two saddle nodes creates tiered synchronization, i.e., bistability between a weakly synchronized state and a strongly synchroni…
The human cortex is never at rest but in a state of sparse and noisy neural activity that can be detected at broadly diverse resolution scales. It has been conjectured that such a state is best described as a critical dynamical process -- whose nature is still not fully understood -- where scale-free avalanches of activity emerge at the edge of a phase transition. In particular, some works suggest that this is most likely a synchronization transition, separating synchronous from asynchronous phases. Here, by investigating a simplified model of coupled excitable oscillators describing the corte…
We study the effect of structured higher-order interactions on the collective behavior of coupled phase oscillators. By combining a hypergraph generative model with dimensionality reduction techniques, we obtain a reduced system of differential equations for the system's order parameters. We illustrate our framework with the example of a hypergraph with hyperedges of sizes 2 (links) and 3 (triangles). For this case, we obtain a set of 2 coupled nonlinear algebraic equations for the order parameters. For strong values of coupling via triangles, the system exhibits bistability and explosive sync…
As it was argued by Anderson [Science 177, 393 (1972)], the "reductionist" hypothesis does not by any means imply a "constructionist" one. Hence, in general, the behavior of large and complex aggregates of elementary components can not be understood nor extrapolated from the properties of a few components. Following this insight, we have simulated different "aggregates" of logistic maps according to a particular coupling scheme. All these aggregates show a similar pattern of dynamical properties, concretely a bistable behavior, that is also found in a network of many units of the same type, in…
We study the synchronization of a linear array of globally coupled identical logistic maps. We consider a time-delayed coupling that takes into account the finite velocity of propagation of the interactions. We find globally synchronized states in which the elements of the array evolve along a periodic orbit of the uncoupled map, while the spatial correlation along the array is such that an individual map sees all other maps in his present, current, state. For values of the nonlinear parameter such that the uncoupled maps are chaotic, time-delayed mutual coupling suppress the chaotic behavior …

We investigate the dynamics of an array of logistic maps coupled with random delay times. We report that for adequate coupling strength the array is able to synchronize, in spite of the random delays. Specifically, we find that the synchronized state is a homogeneous steady-state, where the chaotic dynamics of the individual maps is suppressed. This differs drastically from the synchronization with instantaneous and fixed-delay coupling, as in those cases the dynamics is chaotic. Also in contrast with the instantaneous and fixed-delay cases, the synchronization does not dependent on the connec…
Ordered and disordered behavior in large ensembles of coupled oscillators map to different functional states in a wide range of applications, e.g., active and resting states in the brain and stable and unstable power grid configurations. For this reason, explosive synchronization transitions, which facilitate fast, abrupt changes between these functional states, has recently seen significant interest from researchers. While previous work has identified properties of complex systems that support explosive synchronization, these investigations have been conducted largely on an ad-hoc basis. Here…
We study the synchronization of a coupled map lattice consisting of a one-dimensional chain of logistic maps. We consider global coupling with a time-delay that takes into account the finite velocity of propagation of interactions. We recently showed that clustering occurs for weak coupling, while for strong coupling the array synchronizes into a global state where each element sees all other elements in its current, present state [Physica A {\bf 325} (2003) 186, Phys. Rev. E {\bf 67} (2003) 056219]. In this paper we study the effects of in-homogeneities, both in the individual maps, which are…
We study the influence of network topology and connectivity on the synchronization properties of chaotic logistic maps, interacting with random delay times. Four different types of topologies are investigated: two regular (a ring-type and a ring-type with a central node) and two random (free-scale Barabasi-Albert and small-world Newman-Watts). The influence of the network connectivity is studied by varying the average number of links per node, while keeping constant the total input that each map receives from its neighbors. For weak coupling the array does not synchronize regardless the topolo…
Coupled map lattices are paradigmatic models of many collective phenomena. However, quite different patterns can emerge depending on the updating scheme. While in early versions, maps were updated synchronously, there has been in recent years a concern to consider more realistic updating schemes where elements do not change all at once. Asynchronous updating schemes and the inclusion of time delays are seen as more realistic than the traditional parallel dynamics, and, in diverse works, either one or the other has been implemented separately. But are they actually distinct cases? For coupled m…
Synchronization among globally coupled, chaotic map lattices can be related to stable periodic windows in isolated chaotic maps. This relation provides a simple predictive tool for the understanding of complicated behavior in coupled physical, chemical and biological systems.
Complexity of dynamical networks can arise not only from the complexity of the topological structure but also from the time evolution of the topology. In this paper, we study the synchronous motion of coupled maps in time-varying complex networks both analytically and numerically. The temporal variation is rather general and formalized as being driven by a metric dynamical system. Four network models are discussed in detail in which the interconnections between vertices vary through time randomly. These models are 1) i.i.d. sequences of random graphs with fixed wiring probability, 2) groups of…
A network of delay-coupled logistic maps exhibits two different synchronization regimes, depending on the distribution of the coupling delay times. When the delays are homogeneous throughout the network, the network synchronizes to a time-dependent state [Atay et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 144101 (2004)], which may be periodic or chaotic depending on the delay; when the delays are sufficiently heterogeneous, the synchronization proceeds to a steady-state, which is unstable for the uncoupled map [Masoller and Marti, Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 134102 (2005)]. Here we characterize the transition from ti…
Complex multiplex networks consist of several subnetwork layers, which interact via pairwise inter-layer connections. Relay synchronization between distant layers which are not directly connected, but only via a relay layer, can be observed in multiplex networks. We study three-layer networks of discrete logistic maps, where each individual layer is a nonlocally coupled ring, and demonstrate scenarios of relay synchronization of complex patterns in the outer layers which interact via an intermediate layer. We find regimes of relay synchronization for chimera states, i.e., patterns of coexistin…
We study numerically the dynamics of a network made of two coupled one-dimensional ensembles of discrete-time systems. The first ensemble is represented by a ring of nonlocally coupled Henon maps, and the second one - by a ring of nonlocally coupled Lozi maps. We find that the network of coupled ensembles can realize all the spatio-temporal structures which are observed both in the Henon map ensemble and in the Lozi map ensemble when uncoupled. Moreover, we reveal a new type of spatiotemporal structure, a solitary state chimera, in the considered network. We also establish and describe the eff…
We propose Moebius maps as a tool to model synchronization phenomena in coupled phase oscillators. Not only does the map provide fast computation of phase synchronization, it also reflects the underlying group structure of the sinusoidally coupled continuous phase dynamics. We study map versions of various known continuous-time collective dynamics, such as the synchronization transition in the Kuramoto-Sakaguchi model of non-identical oscillators, chimeras in two coupled populations of identical phase oscillators, and Kuramoto-Battogtokh chimeras on a ring, and demonstrate similarities and dif…
We study the dynamics of an ensemble of globally coupled chaotic logistic maps under the action of a learning algorithm aimed at driving the system from incoherent collective evolution to a state of spontaneous full synchronization. Numerical calculations reveal a sharp transition between regimes of unsuccessful and successful learning as the algorithm stiffness grows. In the regime of successful learning, an optimal value of the stiffness is found for which the learning time is minimal.
We consider networks of coupled maps where the connections between units involve time delays. We show that, similar to the undelayed case, the synchronization of the network depends on the connection topology, characterized by the spectrum of the graph Laplacian. Consequently, scale-free and random networks are capable of synchronizing despite the delayed flow of information, whereas regular networks with nearest-neighbor connections and their small-world variants generally exhibit poor synchronization. On the other hand, connection delays can actually be conducive to synchronization, so that …
The dynamics of one-way coupled systems with discrete time is considered. The behavior of the coupled logistic maps is compared to the dynamics of maps obtained using the Poincare sectioning procedure applied to the coupled continuous-time systems in the phase synchronization regime. The behavior (previously considered as asynchronous) of the coupled maps that appears when the complete synchronization regime is broken as the coupling parameter decreases, corresponds to the phase synchronization of flow systems, and should be considered as a synchronous regime. A quantitative measure of the deg…
In this paper, we study pairs of oscillators that are indirectly coupled via active (excitable) cells. We introduce a scalar phase model for coupled oscillators and excitable cells. We first show that one excitable and one oscillatory cell will exhibit phase locking at a variety of $m:n$ patterns. We next introduce a second oscillatory cell and show that the only attractor is synchrony between the oscillators. We will also study the robustness to heterogeneity when excitable cell fires or is quiescent. We next examine the dynamics when the oscillators are coupled via two excitable cells. In th…
An inverse modeling technique is introduced that combines elements of coupled logistic map models and wavelet analysis for the purpose of analyzing partial synchronization states in high-dimensional systems. Using Embedded Complex Logistic Maps (ECLM), time series data derived from individual system components is directly mapped to a wavelet-like space generated from iterations of specific complex logistic maps. These maps are selected from the complex plane according to "best fit" scoring criteria with the data. The embedding topology within and near the familiar Mandelbrot Set provides metri…
In this article, we present a dynamical scheme to obtain a reconfigurable noise-aided logic gate, that yields all six fundamental 2-input logic operations, including the XOR operation. The setup consists of two coupled bistable subsystems that are each driven by one subthreshold logic input signal, in the presence of a noise floor. The synchronization state of their outputs, robustly maps to 2-input logic operations of the driving signals, in an optimal window of noise and coupling strengths. Thus the interplay of noise, nonlinearity and coupling, leads to the emergence of logic operations emb…
We study the effect that the injection of a common source of noise has on the trajectories of chaotic systems, addressing some contradictory results present in the literature. We present particular examples of 1-d maps and the Lorenz system, both in the chaotic region, and give numerical evidence showing that the addition of a common noise to different trajectories, which start from different initial conditions, leads eventually to their perfect synchronization. When synchronization occurs, the largest Lyapunov exponent becomes negative. For a simple map we are able to show this phenomenon ana…
We study numerically synchronization phenomena of spatiotemporal structures, including chimera states, in a two layer network of nonlocally coupled nonlinear chaotic discrete-time systems. Each of the interacting ensembles represents a one layer ring network of nonlocally coupled logistic maps in the chaotic regime. The coupled networks differ in their control parameters that enables one to observe distinct spatiotemporal dynamics in the networks when there is no coupling between them. We explore in detail external and mutual synchronization of chimera structures. The identity of synchronous s…
As a model of evolving networks, we study coupled logistic maps on scale free networks. For small coupling strengths nodes show turbulent behavior but form phase synchronized clusters as coupling increases. We identify two different ways of cluster formation. For small coupling strengths we get {\it self-organized clusters} which have mostly intra-cluster couplings and for large coupling strengths there is a crossover and reorganization to {\it driven clusters} which have mostly inter-cluster couplings. In the novel driven synchronization the nodes of one cluster are driven by those of the oth…
We comprehensively studied the morphology of the self-organized effective network structures that form in simple coupled maps with interelement synchronization-dependent connection changes. Based on the parameter values, the spontaneous formation of four types of directional hierarchical networks, named pair-driven networks, loop-driven networks, hidden trio-driven networks, and hidden community-driven networks, was observed. This study provides novel insights into the self-organized complex networks that form in neural networks, various other biological networks, and social networks.
