Heavy $c\bar c$ and $b\bar b $ quarkonia are considered as systems confined within a hard-wall potential shaped after a linear combination of a cotangent-- with a square co-secant function. Wave functions and energy spectra are then obtained in closed forms in solving by the Nikiforov-Uvarov method the associated radial Schrödinger equation in the presence of a centrifugal term. The interest in this potential is that in one parametrization it can account for a conformal symmetry of the strong interaction, and in another for its perturbation, a reason for which we here employ it to study status of conformal symmetry in the heavy flavor sector. The resulting predictions on heavy quarkonia mass spectra and root mean square radii are compared with the available experimental data, as well as with predictions by other theoretical approaches. We observe that a relatively small conformal symmetry perturbing term in the potential suffices to achieve good agreement with data.
Properties of quarkonia - like states in the charm and bottom sector have been studied in the frame work of relativistic Dirac formalism with a linear confinement potential. We have computed the mass spectroscopy and decay properties (vector decay constant and leptonic decay width) of several quarkonia - like states. Present study is also intended to identify some of the unexplained states as mixed P-wave and mixed S-D wave states of Charmonia and Bottomonia. The results indicate that the X(4140) state can be an admixture of two P states of charmonium. And the charmonium like states X(4630) an…
The recently obtained solutions of Dirac equation in the confining SU(3)-Yang-Mills field in Minkowski spacetime are applied to describe the energy spectra of quarkonia (charmonium and bottomonium). The nonrelativistic limit is considered for the relativistic effects to be estimated in a self-consistent way and it is shown that the given effects are extremely important for both the energy spectra and the confinement mechanism.
We consider a Coulomb potential plus a confinement potential $ A r^ν $ and we study which of the two terms is dominant in the description of quarkonia. We find that in general the term of confinement is dominant, which allows us to understand why such potentials, like Martin's potential, are successful in describing of heavy mesons.
A constituent parton picture of hadrons with logarithmic confinement naturally arises in weak coupling light-front QCD. Confinement provides a mass gap that allows the constituent picture to emerge. The effective renormalized Hamiltonian is computed to ${\cal O}(g^2)$, and used to study charmonium and bottomonium. Radial and angular excitations can be used to fix the coupling $α$, the quark mass $M$, and the cutoff $Λ$. The resultant hyperfine structure is very close to experiment.
A constituent parton picture of hadrons with logarithmic confinement arises naturally in light-front QCD when the hamiltonian is computed using a perturbative renormalization group; however, rotational symmetry is not manifest as a simple kinematic symmetry. Relevant operators must typically be fine-tuned when a perturbative renormalization group is used, and in light-front field theory such operators contain functions of longitudinal momenta. We explore the possibility that a gluon mass operator with simple longitudinal momentum dependence may improve approximate kinematic rotational symmetry…
The electromagnetic radiative transition widths for heavy quarkonia, as well as digamma and digluon decay widths, are computed in the framework of the extended harmonic confinement model (ERHM) and Coulomb plus power potential (CPP$_ν$) with varying potential index $ν$. The outcome is compared with the values obtained from other theoretical models and experimental results. While the mass spectra, digamma and digluon widths from ERHM as well as CPP$_{ν=1}$ are in good agreement with experimental data, the electromagnetic transition widths span over a wide range for the potential models consider…
The heavy quarkonia (Charmonium \(c\bar{c}\) and Bottomonium \(b\bar{b}\)) are investigated in the framework of the instantaneous BS-equation (Salpeter equation). We parametrize confinement alternatively by a linearly rising scalar or a vector interaction kernel and take into account the one-gluon-exchange (OGE) interaction in the instantaneous approximation. Mass spectra as well as leptonic, two-photon, E1 and M1 decay widths are calculated. Our results show that a reasonable description of the experimental data can be obtained with both spin structures for the confining kernel. The relativis…
Direct probes for the QGP must be hard enough to resolve sub-hadronic scales ($\ll \la^{-1}$) and distinguish confined and deconfined media. This can be achieved by fast colour charges (jets) and heavy quark resonances (quarkonia). After a general survey, we study quarkonia as confinement probe and show in particular that confined matter is transparent, deconfined matter opaque to \J's.
We consider a general scheme for calculating the leptonic constant of heavy quarkonium QQ-bar in the framework of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics, NRQCD, operating as the effective theory of nonrelativistic heavy quarks. We explore the approach of static potential in QCD, which takes into account both the evolution of effective charge in the three-loop approximation and the linearly raising potential term, which provides the quark confinement. The leptonic constants of bb-bar and cc-bar systems are evaluated by making use of two-loop anomalous dimension for the current of nonrelativisti…
In relativistic potential models of quarkonia based on a Dirac-type of equation with a local potential there is a sharp distinction between a linear potential V which is vector-like and one which is scalar-like: There are normalizable solutions for a scalar-like V but not for a vector-like V. It is pointed out that if instead one uses an equation of the no-pair type, which is more natural from the viewpoint of field theory, this somewhat bizarre difference disappears.
We reproduce masses of the self-conjugate and non-self-conjugate mesons in the context of the spinless Salpeter equation taking into account the relativistic kinematics and the quark spins. The hyperfine splittings for the ${\rm 2S}$ charmonium and ${\rm 1S}$ bottomonium are also calculated. Further, the pseudoscalar and vector decay constants of the $B_{c}$ meson and the unperturbed radial wave function at the origin are also calculated. We have obtained a local equation with a complete relativistic corrections to a class of three attractive static interaction potentials of the general form $…
Exotic states in the charmonium family are systematically treated in the framework of simplest model with an effective coulomb-like interaction of heavy quark and antiquark in the presence of static excitation of quark-gluon modes responsible for a nonperturbative term of potential, which provides with the confinement of quarks, in terms of bag over the threshold in the excitation spectrum of vacuum fields. Once the spectrum has got quite a wide mass gap, it allows us to approximate the bag contribution into the potential by a constant value of bag mass at low distances less than the bag size.…
The mass spectra and decay properties of heavy quarkonia are computed in nonrelativistic quark-antiquark Cornell potential model. We have employed the numerical solution of Schrödinger equation to obtain their mass spectra using only four parameters namely quark mass ($m_c$, $m_b$) and confinement strength ($A_{c\bar c}$, $A_{b\bar b}$). The spin hyperfine, spin-orbit and tensor components of the one gluon exchange interaction are computed perturbatively to determine the mass spectra of excited $S$, $P$, $D$ and $F$ states. Digamma, digluon and dilepton decays of these mesons are computed usin…
We demonstrate that $SO(N_{c})$ gauge theories with matter fields in the vector representation confine due to monopole condensation and break the $SU(N_{F})$ chiral symmetry to $SO(N_{F})$ via the quark bilinear. Our results are obtained by perturbing the ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric theory with anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking.
An approach to QCD vacuum as a medium describable in terms of statistical ensemble of almost everywhere homogeneous Abelian (anti-)self-dual gluon fields is reviewed. These fields play the role of the confining medium for color charged fields as well as underline the mechanism of realization of chiral $SU_{\mathrm L}(N_f)\times SU_{\mathrm R}(N_f)$ and $U_{\mathrm A}(1)$ symmetries. Hadronization formalism based on this ensemble leads to manifestly defined quantum effective meson action. Strong, electromagnetic and weak interactions of mesons are represented in the action in terms of nonlocal …
This is the third paper on hadronic light front wave functions (LFWFs). We derive a light front Hamiltonian from first principles using the key features of the QCD vacuum at low resolution. In the first approximation, it gives transverse oscillator and longitudinal harmonic modes and yields the correct Regge trajectories. For heavy quarkonia, we compare its spectrum to that obtained from the usual Schroedinger equation in the rest frame. We use the same approach for light quarks, and investigate the role of confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in the quark-antiquark sector. We then study s…
Quarkonia are the central objects to explore the non-perturbative nature of non-abelian gauge theories. We describe the confinement-deconfinement phases for heavy quarkonia in a hot QCD medium and thereby the statistical nature of the inter-quark forces. In the sense of one-loop quantum effects, we propose that the "quantum" nature of quark matters follows directly from the thermodynamic consideration of Richardson potential. Thereby we gain an understanding of the formation of hot and dense states of quark gluon plasma matter in heavy ion collisions and the early universe. In the case of the …
The heavy quark potential and particularly the one proposed by Richardson to incorporate both asymptotic freedom and linear confinement is analyzed in terms of a generalized Borel Transform recently proposed. We were able to obtain, in the range of physical interest, an approximate analytical expression for the potential in coordinate space valid even for intermediate distances. The deviation between our approximate potential and the numerical evaluation of the Richardson's one is much smaller than $Λ$ of QCD. The $c\overline{c}$ and $b\overline{b}$ quarkonia energy levels agree reasonably wel…
The non-abelian symmetry of a lagrangian invalidates the principle of superposition for the field described by this lagrangian. A consequence in QCD is that non-linear effects occur, resulting in the quark-quark linear potential that explains the quark confinement, the quarkonia spectra or the Regge trajectories. Following a parallel between QCD and gravitation, we suggest that these non-linear effects should create an additional logarithmic potential in the classical newtonian description of gravity. The modified potential may account for the rotation curve of galaxies and other problems, wit…
The resolution of Dyson-Schwinger equations leads to the freezing of the QCD running coupling (effective charge) in the infrared, which is best understood as a dynamical generation of a gluon mass function, giving rise to a momentum dependence which is free from infrared divergences. We calculate the interquark potential for heavy mesons by assuming that it is given by a massive One Gluon Exchange potential and compare with phenomenologyical fits inspired by lattice QCD. We apply these potential forms to the description of quarkonia and conclude that, even though some aspects of the confinemen…
The infrared behavior of the quark-gluon vertex of quenched Landau gauge QCD is studied by analyzing its Dyson-Schwinger equation. Building on previously obtained results for Green functions in the Yang-Mills sector we analytically derive the existence of power-law infrared singularities for this vertex. We establish that dynamical chiral symmetry breaking leads to the self-consistent generation of components of the quark-gluon vertex forbidden when chiral symmetry is forced to stay in the Wigner-Weyl mode. In the latter case the running strong coupling assumes an infrared fixed point. If chir…
Because quarks and gluons are confined within hadrons, they have a maximum wavelength of order the confinement scale. Propagators, normally calculated for free quarks and gluons using Dyson-Schwinger equations, are modified by bound-state effects in close analogy to the calculation of the Lamb shift in atomic physics. Because of confinement, the effective quantum chromodynamic coupling stays finite in the infrared. The quark condensate which arises from spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in the bound state Dyson-Schwinger equation is the expectation value of the operator $\bar q q$ evaluated…
We study charmonium and bottomonium as relativistic bound states in a light-front quantized Hamiltonian formalism. The effective Hamiltonian is based on light-front holography. We use a recently proposed longitudinal confinement to complete the soft-wall holographic potential for the heavy flavors. The spin structure is generated from the one-gluon exchange interaction with a running coupling. The adoption of asymptotic freedom improves the spectroscopy compared with previous light-front results. Within this model, we compute the mass spectroscopy, decay constants and the r.m.s. radii. We also…
We compute masses of positive parity spin-$1/2$ and $3/2$ baryons composed of $u$, $d$, $s$, $c$ and $b$ quarks in a quark-diaquark picture. The mathematical foundation for this analysis is implemented through a symmetry-preserving Schwinger-Dyson equations treatment of a vector-vector contact interaction, which preserves key features of quantum chromodynamics, such as confinement, chiral symmetry breaking and low energy Goldberger-Treiman relations. This study requires a computation of diquark correlations containing these quarks which in turn are readily inferred from solving the Bethe-Salpe…
