One of the first things to do while planning a trip is to book a good place to stay. Booking a hotel online can be an overwhelming task with thousands of hotels to choose from, for every destination. Motivated by the importance of these situations, we decided to work on the task of recommending hotels to users. We used Expedia's hotel recommendation dataset, which has a variety of features that helped us achieve a deep understanding of the process that makes a user choose certain hotels over others. The aim of this hotel recommendation task is to predict and recommend five hotel clusters to a user that he/she is more likely to book given hundred distinct clusters.

Nowadays, people start to use online reservation systems to plan their vacations since they have vast amount of choices available. Selecting when and where to go from this large-scale options is getting harder. In addition, sometimes consumers can miss the better options due to the wealth of information to be found on the online reservation systems. In this sense, personalized services such as recommender systems play a crucial role in decision making. Two traditional recommendation techniques are content-based and collaborative filtering. While both methods have their advantages, they also ha…

We propose a neural network architecture for learning vector representations of hotels. Unlike previous works, which typically only use user click information for learning item embeddings, we propose a framework that combines several sources of data, including user clicks, hotel attributes (e.g., property type, star rating, average user rating), amenity information (e.g., the hotel has free Wi-Fi or free breakfast), and geographic information. During model training, a joint embedding is learned from all of the above information. We show that including structured attributes about hotels enables…
In this paper, we present a real-world conversational AI system to search for and book hotels through text messaging. Our architecture consists of a frame-based dialogue management system, which calls machine learning models for intent classification, named entity recognition, and information retrieval subtasks. Our chatbot has been deployed on a commercial scale, handling tens of thousands of hotel searches every day. We describe the various opportunities and challenges of developing a chatbot in the travel industry.

Nowadays, search ranking and recommendation systems rely on a lot of data to train machine learning models such as Learning-to-Rank (LTR) models to rank results for a given query, and implicit user feedbacks (e.g. click data) have become the dominant source of data collection due to its abundance and low cost, especially for major Internet companies. However, a drawback of this data collection approach is the data could be highly biased, and one of the most significant biases is the position bias, where users are biased towards clicking on higher ranked results. In this work, we will investiga…
This paper describes the hotel price aggregation system - PriceAggregator, deployed at Agoda, a global online travel agency for hotels, vacation rentals, flights and airport transfer. Agoda aggregates non-direct suppliers' hotel rooms to ensure that Agoda's customers always have the widest selection of hotels, room types and packages. As of today, Agoda aggregates millions of hotels. The major challenge is that each supplier only allows Agoda to fetch for the hotel price with a limited amount of Queries Per Second (QPS). Due to the sheer volume of Agoda's user search traffic, this limited amou…

While recommendation systems generally observe user behavior passively, there has been an increased interest in directly querying users to learn their specific preferences. In such settings, considering queries at different levels of granularity to optimize user information acquisition is crucial to efficiently providing a good user experience. In this work, we study the active learning problem with multi-level user preferences within the collective matrix factorization (CMF) framework. CMF jointly captures multi-level user preferences with respect to items and relations between items (e.g., b…
The Reading&Machine project exploits the support of digitalization to increase the attractiveness of libraries and improve the users' experience. The project implements an application that helps the users in their decision-making process, providing recommendation system (RecSys)-generated lists of books the users might be interested in, and showing them through an interactive Virtual Reality (VR)-based Graphical User Interface (GUI). In this paper, we focus on the design and testing of the recommendation system, employing data about all users' loans over the past 9 years from the network of li…

Recommendation systems are emerging as an important business application with significant economic impact. Currently popular systems include Amazon's book recommendations, Netflix's movie recommendations, and Pandora's music recommendations. In this paper we address the problem of estimating probabilities associated with recommendation system data using non-parametric kernel smoothing. In our estimation we interpret missing items as randomly censored observations and obtain efficient computation schemes using combinatorial properties of generating functions. We demonstrate our approach with se…
In online platforms it is often the case to have multiple brands under the same group which may target different customer profiles, or have different domains. For example, in the hospitality domain, Expedia Group has multiple brands like Brand Expedia, Hotels.com and Wotif which have either different traveler profiles or are more relevant in a local context. In this context, learning embeddings for hotels that can be leveraged in recommendation tasks in multiple brands requires to have a common embedding that can be induced using alignment approaches. In the same time, one needs to ensure that…
Learning distributed representations of documents has pushed the state-of-the-art in several natural language processing tasks and was successfully applied to the field of recommender systems recently. In this paper, we propose a novel content-based recommender system based on learned representations and a generative model of user interest. Our method works as follows: First, we learn representations on a corpus of text documents. Then, we capture a user's interest as a generative model in the space of the document representations. In particular, we model the distribution of interest for each …
Multi-objective recommender systems address the difficult task of recommending items that are relevant to multiple, possibly conflicting, criteria. However these systems are most often designed to address the objective of one single stakeholder, typically, in online commerce, the consumers whose input and purchasing decisions ultimately determine the success of the recommendation systems. In this work, we address the multi-objective, multi-stakeholder, recommendation problem involving one or more objective(s) per stakeholder. In addition to the consumer stakeholder, we also consider two other …
Food recommendation system has proven as an effective technology to provide guidance on dietary choices, and this is especially important for patients suffering from chronic diseases. Unlike other multimedia recommendations, such as books and movies, food recommendation task is highly relied on the context at the moment, since users' food preference can be highly dynamic over time. For example, individuals tend to eat more calories earlier in the day and eat a little less at dinner. However, there are still limited research works trying to incorporate both current context and nutritional knowl…

Collaborative filtering recommendation systems provide recommendations to users based on their own past preferences, as well as those of other users who share similar interests. The use of recommendation systems has grown widely in recent years, helping people choose which movies to watch, books to read, and items to buy. However, users are often concerned about their privacy when using such systems, and many users are reluctant to provide accurate information to most online services. Privacy-preserving collaborative filtering recommendation systems aim to provide users with accurate recommend…
Like other social systems, in collaborative filtering a small number of "influential" users may have a large impact on the recommendations of other users, thus affecting the overall behavior of the system. Identifying influential users and studying their impact on other users is an important problem because it provides insight into how small groups can inadvertently or intentionally affect the behavior of the system as a whole. Modeling these influences can also shed light on patterns and relationships that would otherwise be difficult to discern, hopefully leading to more transparency in how …

A reciprocal recommendation problem is one where the goal of learning is not just to predict a user's preference towards a passive item (e.g., a book), but to recommend the targeted user on one side another user from the other side such that a mutual interest between the two exists. The problem thus is sharply different from the more traditional items-to-users recommendation, since a good match requires meeting the preferences of both users. We initiate a rigorous theoretical investigation of the reciprocal recommendation task in a specific framework of sequential learning. We point out genera…
This paper presents the D2KLab team's approach to the RecSys Challenge 2019 which focuses on the task of recommending accommodations based on user sessions. What is the feeling of a person who says "Rooms of the hotel are enormous, staff are friendly and efficient"? It is positive. Similarly to the sequence of words in a sentence where one can affirm what the feeling is, analysing a sequence of actions performed by a user in a website can lead to predict what will be the item the user will add to his basket at the end of the shopping session. We propose to use a many-to-one recurrent neural ne…
Researchers have begun to utilize heterogeneous knowledge graphs (KGs) as auxiliary information in recommendation systems to mitigate the cold start and sparsity issues. However, utilizing a graph neural network (GNN) to capture information in KG and further apply in RS is still problematic as it is unable to see each item's properties from multiple perspectives. To address these issues, we propose the multi-view item network (MVIN), a GNN-based recommendation model which provides superior recommendations by describing items from a unique mixed view from user and entity angles. MVIN learns ite…
In the travel industry, online customers book their travel itinerary according to several features, like cost and duration of the travel or the quality of amenities. To provide personalized recommendations for travel searches, an appropriate segmentation of customers is required. Clustering ensemble approaches were developed to overcome well-known problems of classical clustering approaches, that each rely on a different theoretical model and can thus identify in the data space only clusters corresponding to this model. Clustering ensemble approaches combine multiple clustering results, each f…
Cross domain recommender systems have been increasingly valuable for helping consumers identify the most satisfying items from different categories. However, previously proposed cross-domain models did not take into account bidirectional latent relations between users and items. In addition, they do not explicitly model information of user and item features, while utilizing only user ratings information for recommendations. To address these concerns, in this paper we propose a novel approach to cross-domain recommendations based on the mechanism of dual learning that transfers information betw…

System-provided explanations for recommendations are an important component towards transparent and trustworthy AI. In state-of-the-art research, this is a one-way signal, though, to improve user acceptance. In this paper, we turn the role of explanations around and investigate how they can contribute to enhancing the quality of the generated recommendations themselves. We devise a human-in-the-loop framework, called ELIXIR, where user feedback on explanations is leveraged for pairwise learning of user preferences. ELIXIR leverages feedback on pairs of recommendations and explanations to learn…

Classifieds provide many challenges for recommendation methods, due to the limited information regarding users and items. In this paper, we explore recommendation methods for classifieds using the example of OLX Jobs. The goal of the paper is to benchmark different recommendation methods for jobs classifieds in order to improve advertisements' conversion rate and user satisfaction. In our research, we implemented methods that are scalable and represent different approaches to recommendation, namely ALS, LightFM, Prod2Vec, RP3beta, and SLIM. We performed a laboratory comparison of methods with …
In a large recommender system, the products (or items) could be in many different categories or domains. Given two relevant domains (e.g., Book and Movie), users may have interactions with items in one domain but not in the other domain. To the latter, these users are considered as cold-start users. How to effectively transfer users' preferences based on their interactions from one domain to the other relevant domain, is the key issue in cross-domain recommendation. Inspired by the advances made in review-based recommendation, we propose to model user preference transfer at aspect-level derive…

Cross-domain recommendation (CDR) can help customers find more satisfying items in different domains. Existing CDR models mainly use common users or mapping functions as bridges between domains but have very limited exploration in fully utilizing extra knowledge across domains. In this paper, we propose to incorporate the knowledge graph (KG) for CDR, which enables items in different domains to share knowledge. To this end, we first construct a new dataset AmazonKG4CDR from the Freebase KG and a subset (two domain pairs: movies-music, movie-book) of Amazon Review Data. This new dataset facilit…
