Most of the studied two-dimensional (2D) materials have been obtained by exfoliation of van der Waals crystals. Recently, there has been growing interest in fabricating synthetic 2D crystals which have no layered bulk analogues. These efforts have been focused mainly on the surface growth of molecules in high vacuum. Here, we report an approach to making 2D crystals of covalent solids by chemical conversion of van der Waals layers. As an example, we use 2D indium selenide (InSe) obtained by exfoliation and converted it by direct fluorination into indium fluoride (InF3), which has a non-layered, rhombohedral structure and therefore cannot be possibly obtained by exfoliation. The conversion of InSe into InF3 is found to be feasible for thicknesses down to three layers of InSe, and the obtained stable InF3 layers are doped with selenium. We study this new 2D material by optical, electron transport and Raman measurements and show that it is a semiconductor with a direct bandgap of 2.2 eV, exhibiting high optical transparency across the visible and infrared spectral ranges. We also demonstrate the scalability of our approach by chemical conversion of large-area, thin InSe laminates obtained by liquid exfoliation into InF3 films. The concept of chemical conversion of cleavable thin van der Waals crystals into covalently-bonded non-cleavable ones opens exciting prospects for synthesizing a wide variety of novel atomically thin covalent crystals.
Quantum dot (QD) assemblies are nanostructured networks made from aggregates of QDs and feature improved charge and energy transfer efficiencies compared to discrete QDs. Using first-principles many-body perturbation theory, we systematically compare the electronic and optical properties of two types of CdS QD assemblies that have been experimentally investigated: QD gels, where individual QDs are covalently connected via di- or poly-sulfide bonds, and QD nanocrystals, where individual QDs are bound via van der Waals interactions. Our work illustrates how the electronic, excitonic, and optical…
Realizing van der Waals (vdW) epitaxy in the 80s represents a breakthrough that circumvents the stringent lattice matching and processing compatibility requirements in conventional covalent heteroepitaxy. However, due to the weak vdW interactions, there is little control over film qualities by the substrate. Typically, discrete domains with a spread of misorientation angles are formed, limiting the applicability of vdW epitaxy. Here we report the epitaxial growth of monocrystalline, covalent Cr5Te8 2D crystals on monolayer vdW WSe2 by chemical vapor deposition, driven by interfacial dative bon…
We present a comparative ab initio study of Li and Na insertion in molecular (van der Waals) crystals of TCNE (tetracyanoethylene) as well as in covalent Li/Na-TCNE crystals. We confirm the structure of previously synthesized (covalent) Li-TCNE crystal as well as predict the existence of its Na-TCNE analogue. In the molecular/covalent TCNE crystals, insertion sites are identified with the binding energy of Li and Na up to 2.7/1.8 and 2.6/1.8 eV stronger than Li and Na cohesive energy, respectively, in dilute concentrations. Up to 5.5/2.5 and 3/2 Li and Na atoms per TCNE unit can be inserted in…
Three-dimensional epitaxial heterostructures are based on covalently-bonded interfaces, whereas those from 2-dimensional (2D) materials exhibit van der Waals interactions. Under the right conditions, however, material structures with mixed interfacial van der Waals and covalent bonding may be realized. Atomically thin layers formed at the epitaxial graphene (EG)/silicon carbide (SiC) interface indicate that EG/SiC interfaces provide this unique environment and enable synthesis of a rich palette of 2D materials not accessible with traditional techniques. Here, we demonstrate a method termed con…
We show that two graphene layers stacked directly on top of each other (AA stacking) form strong chemical bonds when the distance between planes is 0.156 nm. Simultaneously, C-C in-plane bonds are considerably weakened from partial double-bond (0.141 nm) to single bond (0.154 nm). This polymorphic form of graphene bilayer is meta-stable w.r.t. the one bound by van der Waals forces at a larger separation (0.335 nm) with an activation energy of 0.16 eV/cell. Similarly to the structure found in hexaprismane, C forms four single bonds in a geometry mixing 90^{0} and 120^{0} angles. Intermediate se…
We have developed a pair-potential approach for the evaluation of van der Waals interaction between carbon nanotubes in bundles. Starting from a continuum model, we show that the intertube modes range from $5 cm^{-1}$ to $60 cm^{-1}$. Using a non-orthogonal tight-binding approximation for describing the covalent intra-tube bonding in addition, we confirme a slight chiral dependance of the breathing mode frequency and we found that this breathing mode frequency increase by $\sim$ 10 % if the nanotube lie inside a bundle as compared to the isolated tube.
Covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) are intriguing platforms for designing functional molecular materials. Here, we present a computational study based on van der Waals dispersion-corrected hybrid density functional theory calculations to analyze the material properties of boroxine-linked and triazine-linked intercalated-COFs. The effect of Fe atoms on the electronic band structures near the Fermi energy level of the intercalated-COFs have been investigated. The density of states (DOSs) computations have been performed to analyze the material properties of these kind of intercalated-COFs. We pr…
The polarization and piezoelectric response of the BiTe$X$ ($X$=Cl, Br, and I) layered tellurohalides are computed from first principles. The results confirm a mixed ionic-covalent character of the bonding, and demonstrate that the internal structure within each triple layer is only weakly affected by the external stress, while the changes in the charge distribution with stress produce a substantial negative piezoelectric response. This suggests a new mechanism for negative piezoelectric response that should remain robust even in ultra-thin film form in this class of materials.
The Diels-Alder surface modified top epitaxial graphene layer, with newly created pair of sp3 carbon centres, results in abrupt minimization of interlayer van der Waals interactions between two stacked graphene planes, and escapes the wafer during post-reaction manipulation stage, leaving the layer under it almost pristine-like. Above picture shows Diels-Alder functionalized sp2/sp3 graphene adduct leaves the parent wafer. In this communication we systematically address several fundamental questions in graphene surface chemistry, which are of extreme importance for device fabrication, and in s…
The random phase approximation (RPA) is attracting renewed interest as a universal and accurate method for first-principles total energy calculations. The RPA naturally accounts for long-range dispersive forces without compromising accuracy for short range interactions making the RPA superior to semi-local and hybrid functionals in systems dominated by weak van der Waals or mixed covalent-dispersive interactions. In this work we present plane wave-based RPA calculations for a broad collection of systems with bond types ranging from strong covalent to van der Waals. Our main result is the RPA p…
We show how van der Waals (vdW) forces outcompete covalent and ionic forces to control ferroelectric ordering in CuInP2S6 nanoflakes as well as in CuInP2S6 and CuBiP2Se6 crystals. While the self-assembly of these 2D layered materials is clearly controlled by vdW effects, this result indicates that the internal layer structure is also similarly controlled. Using up to 14 first-principles computational methods, we predict that the bilayers of both materials should be antiferroelectric. However, antiferroelectric nanoflakes and bulk materials are shown to embody two fundamentally different types …
Covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) are intriguing platforms for designing functional molecular materials. Here, we present a computational study based on van der Waals dispersion-corrected hybrid density functional theory (DFT-D) to design boroxine-linked and triazine-linked COFs intercalated with Fe. Keeping the original $P-6m2$ symmetry of the pristine COF (COF-Fe-0), we have computationally designed seven new COFs by intercalating Fe atoms between two organic layers. The equilibrium structures and electronic properties of both the pristine and Fe-intercalated COF materials are investigated …
The adsorption of iron phthalocyanine (FePc) on the passivated H/Si(111) surface is explored from first principles. We find that the organic molecule is predominantly physisorbed with a distance to the surface of $2.6 \pm 0.1$ Angstrom, but also exhibits sizable resonance with the underlying substrate. This establishes the present system as interesting mixed covalent-van-der-Waals-bound test case, which we use to compare the impact of different approaches to van-der-Waals interactions. (Spin-polarized) scanning tunneling microscopy (SP STM) images are simulated, selectively accessing different…
Bulk tellurium (Te) is composed of one-dimensional (1D) helical chains which have been considered to be coupled by van der Waals (vdW) interactions. However, based on first-principles density-functional theory calculations, we here propose a different bonding nature between neighboring chains: i.e., the helical chains made of normal covalent bonds are connected together by coordinate covalent bonds. It is revealed that the lone pairs of electrons of Te atom participate in forming coordinate covalent bonds between neighboring chains. Therefore, each Te atom behaves as both electron donor to nei…
Semi-local density functional approximations are widely used. None of them can capture the long-range van der Waals (vdW) attraction between separated subsystems, but they differ remarkably in the extent to which they capture intermediate-range vdW effects responsible for equilibrium bonds between neighboring small closed-shell subsystems. The local density approximation (LDA) often overestimates this effect, while the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) generalized gradient approximation (GGA) underestimates it. The strongly-constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) meta-GGA often estimates it wel…
The growing families of two-dimensional crystals derived from naturally occurring van der Waals materials offer an unprecedented platform to investigate elusive physical phenomena and could be of use in a diverse range of devices. Of particular interest are recently reported atomic sheets of non-van der Waals materials, which could allow a better comprehension of the nature of structural bonds and increase the functionality of prospective heterostructures. Here, we study the optostructural properties of ultrathin non-van der Waals InGaS3 sheets produced by standard mechanical cleavage. Our ab …
Herein, we report an easy, straight forward, and versatile approach to build 0D/2D hybrid nanoparticle/graphene architectures by means of non-covalent chemistry and a modified Layer-by-Layer assembly. Three water soluble perylene diimides were employed to efficiently exfoliate pristine graphite into positively charged few- and multilayer graphene flakes. Further combination of these cationic building blocks with anionic zinc oxide nanoparticles led to the formation of tailor-made hybrid films via electrostatic and van der Waals interactions. These supramolecular hybrid nano-structures were tho…
Electronic and Optical Excitations in van der Waals Materials from a Non-Empirical Wannier-Localized Optimally-Tuned Screened Range-Separated Hybrid Functional
Two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D-COFs) are an emerging family of catalytical materials with well-defined molecular structures. The stacking of 2D nanosheets and large intrinsic bandgaps significantly impair their performance. Here, we report coaxial one-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures (1D vdWHs) comprised of a carbon nanotube (CNT) core and a thickness tunable thienothiophene-pyrene COF shell using a solution based in situ wrapping method. Density functional theory calculations and in-operando and ex-situ spectroscopic analysis show that the carbon-sulfur region in th…
The non-local van der Waals density functional (vdW-DF) approach is applied to calculate the binding of graphene to Ir(111). The precise agreement of the calculated mean height h = 3.41 Å of the C atoms with their mean height h = (3.38 \pm 0.04) Å as measured by the X-ray standing wave (XSW) technique provides a benchmark for the applicability of the non-local functional. We find bonding of graphene to Ir(111) to be due to the van der Waals interaction with an antibonding average contribution from chemical interaction. Despite its globally repulsive character, in certain areas of the large gra…
High thermal conductivity dominated by thermal phonons with mean free paths exceeding hundred nanometer in three-dimensional covalent organic framework derivatives: a molecular dynamics study
Determining the electronic properties of nanoscopic, low-dimensional materials free of external influences is key to discovery and understanding of new physical phenomena. An example is the suspension of graphene, which has allowed access to their intrinsic charge transport properties. Furthermore, suspending thin films enables their application as membranes, sensors, or resonators, as has been explored extensively. While the suspension of covalently-bound, electronically-active thin films is well established, semiconducting thin films composed of functional molecules only held together by van…
We have studied two interchange layer systems, (i) free standing partly hydrogenated graphene (graphone), and (ii) graphone on the Nickel (111) surface, to assess various density functional theory based computational schemes incorporating van der Waals forces. The various van der Waals methods have been employed ranging from the semiempirical force-field-like correction of Grimme, through non-local van der Waals density functionals, up to the functionals involving exact exchange and the random phase approximation for the correlation. Generally, all computational schemes lead to a similar quali…
Experimental demonstrations of 1D van der Waals material tellurium have been presented by Raman spectroscopy under strain and magneto-transport. Raman spectroscopy measurements have been performed under strains along different principle axes. Pronounced strain response along c-axis is observed due to the strong intra-chain covalent bonds, while no strain response is obtained along a-axis due to the weak inter-chain van der Waals interaction. Magneto-transport results further verify its anisotropic property, resulting in dramatically distinct magneto-resistance behaviors in terms of three diffe…
We propose a tubal van der Waals heterostructure by rolling up the graphene and MoS2 atomic layers into a tubal form. We illustrate that the interlayer space for the tubal van der Waals heterostructure can be varied in a specific range, which is determined by the competition between the interlayer van der Waals force and the mechanical properties of the atomic layers. The variability of the interlayer space can be utilized to efficiently tune mechanical properties of the tubal van der Waals heterostructure. More specifically, we demonstrate that the Poisson's ratio of the tubal van der Waals h…
We derive the exchange-correlation potential corresponding to the nonlocal van der Waals density functional [M. Dion, H. Rydberg, E. Schroder, D. C. Langreth, and B. I. Lundqvist, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 246401 (2004)]. We use this potential for a self-consistent calculation of the ground state properties of a number of van der Waals complexes as well as crystalline silicon. For the latter, where little or no van der Waals interaction is expected, we find that the results are mostly determined by semilocal exchange and correlation as in standard generalized gradient approximations (GGA), with the…
General properties of the recently observed screening of the van der Waals (vdW) attraction between a silica substrate and silica tip by insertion of graphene are predicted using basic theory and first-principles calculations. Results are then focused on possible practical applications, as well as an understanding of the nature of vdW attraction, considering recent discoveries showing it competing against covalent and ionic bonding. The traditional view of the vdW attraction as arising from pairwise-additive London dispersion forces is considered using Grimme's "D3" method, comparing results t…
An expression is derived within the framework of the Debye-Hückel approximation for the screening length of a field in a p-type semiconductor taking into account the energy spread of immobile acceptor levels and the density of states tail of the valence band. It is shown that the screening length depends additively on the product of the carrier density and their drift mobility to diffusion coefficient ratio (for free holes in valence band and holes hopping via acceptors).

The application of new materials in nanotechnology opens new perspectives and enables ground-breaking innovations. Two-dimensional van der Waals materials and more specific, 2D chalcogenides are a promising class of new materials awaiting their usage in the semiconductor industry. However, the integration of van der Waals materials relying on industry-compatible manufacturing processes is still a major challenge. This is currently restricting the application of these new materials to the research laboratories environment only. The large-area and single-crystalline growth of van der Waals mater…
Although sheets of layered van der Waals solids offer great opportunities to custom-design nanomaterial properties, their weak interlayer adhesion challenges structural stability against mechanical deformation. Here, bending-induced delamination of multilayer sheets is investigated by molecular dynamics simulations, using graphene as an archetypal van der Waals solid. Simulations show that delamination of a graphene sheet occurs when its radius of curvature decreases roughly below $R_c=5.3\text{nm}\times (\text{number of layers})^{3/2}$ and that, as a rule, one-third of the layers get delamina…
Van der Waals (vdW) semiconductors are attractive for highly scaled devices and heterogeneous integration since they can be isolated into self-passivated, two-dimensional (2D) layers that enable superior electrostatic control. These attributes have led to numerous demonstrations of field-effect devices ranging from transistors to triodes. By exploiting the controlled, substitutional doping schemes in covalently-bonded, three-dimensional (3D) semiconductors and the passivated surfaces of 2D semiconductors, one can construct devices that can exceed performance metrics of 'all-2D' vdW heterojunct…
Heat conduction mechanisms in superlattices could be different across different types of interfaces. Van der Waals superlattices are structures physically assembled through weak van der Waals interactions by design, and may host properties beyond the traditional limits of lattice matching and processing compatibility, offering new types of interfaces. In this work, natural van der Waals (SnS)1.17(NbS2)n superlattices are synthesized, and their thermal conductivities are measured by time-domain thermoreflectance as a function of interface density. Our results show that heat conduction of (SnS)1…
Adhesion is a key issue for researchers of various fields, it is therefore of uppermost importance to understand the parameters that are involved. Commonly, only surface parameters are employed to determine the adhesive forces between materials. Yet, van der Waals forces act not only between atoms in the vicinity of the surface, but also between atoms in the bulk material. In this review, we describe the principles of van der Waals interactions and outline experimental and theoretical studies investigating the influence of the subsurface material on adhesion. In addition, we present a collecti…
We establish a general equivalence between van der Waals interaction energies within the formalism of the non-local van der Waals functional of the density functional theory and within the formalism of the field approach based on the secular determinants of the electromagnetic field modes. We then compare the two methods explicitly in the case of a planparallel geometry with a continuously varying dielectric response function and show that their respective numerical implementations are not equivalent. This allows us to discuss the merits of the two approaches and possible advantages of either …
We propose a practical approach to spin-polarized systems within the van der Waals density functional (vdW-DF). The method was applied to a gas phase oxygen molecule and a parallel (H-type) pair of oxygen molecules. It was found that vdW-DF improves the equilibrium distance and binding energy. In particular, one type of vdW-DF can describe such systems reasonably well. The van der Waals interaction has been confirmed to have an energy comparable to the magnetic one, while emerging at a distance rather longer than the latter.
We used the binding energy-bond-charge model to study the atomic bonding and electrical properties of the two-dimensional graphene/BN van der Waals heterostructure. We manipulated its atomic bonding and electrical properties by manufacturing defects. We discovered that this process yielded a band structure with a flat band, i.e., a horizontal band structure without dispersion at the Fermi level. Thus, our research is significant because it is the first report on this flat band of defect graphene/BN van der Waals heterostructures.
A simple and computationally efficient scheme to calculate approximate imaginary-frequency dependent polarizability, hence asymptotic van der Waals coefficient, within density functional theory is proposed. The dynamical dipolar polarizabilities of atoms and molecules are calculated starting from the Thomas-Fermi-von Weizsäcker (TFvW) approximation for the independent-electron kinetic energy functional. The van der Waals coefficients for a number of closed-shell ions and a few molecules are hence calculated and compared with available values obtained by fully first-principles calculations. The…
The adsorption of aromatic molecules on metal surfaces plays a key role in condensed matter physics and functional materials. Depending on the strength of the interaction between the molecule and the surface, the binding is typically classified as either physisorption or chemisorption. Van der Waals (vdW) interactions contribute significantly to the binding in physisorbed systems, but the role of the vdW energy in chemisorbed systems remains unclear. Here we study the interaction of benzene with the (111) surface of transition metals, ranging from weak adsorption (Ag and Au) to strong adsorpti…
N-Carbophene (carbophene) is a novel class of two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2DCOF), based on linear N-phenylenes, that have moderate band gaps and low-mobility bands surrounding the Fermi energy; the simplest of which may have been recently synthesized. Using tight-binding density functional theory, the ground state configurations single layers, bilayers, and bulk systems was determined. This work finds that carbophenes have formation energies per carbon atom similar to that of graphenylene. The similarity of formation energies between graphenylene and carbophene suggests that w…
Controlling magnetism in low dimensional materials is essential for designing devices that have feature sizes comparable to several critical length scales that exploit functional spin textures, allowing the realization of low-power spintronic and magneto-electric hardware. [1] Unlike conventional covalently-bonded bulk materials, van der Waals (vdW)-bonded layered magnets [2-4] offer exceptional degrees of freedom for engineering spin textures. [5] However, their structural instability has hindered microscopic studies and manipulations. Here, we demonstrate nanoscale structural control in the …
We examined what interactions control the sign and strength of the interlayer coupling in van der Waals ferromagnets such as Fe3-xGeTe2, Cr2Ge2Te6, CrI3 and VI3, to find that high-spin orbital interaction across the van der Waals gaps are a key to understanding their ferromagnetism. Interlayer ferromagnetic coupling in Fe3-xGeTe2 Cr2Ge2Te6, and CrI3 is governed by the high-spin two-orbital two-electron destabilization, but that in VI3 by the high-spin four-orbital two-electron stabilization. These interactions explain a number of seemingly puzzling observations in van der Waals fer-romagnets.
The recent emergence of 2D van der Waals magnets down to atomic layer thickness provides an exciting platform for exploring quantum magnetism and spintronics applications. The van der Waals nature stabilizes the long-range ferromagnetic order as a result of magnetic anisotropy. Furthermore, giant tunneling magnetoresistance and electrical control of magnetism have been reported. However, the potential of 2D van der Waals magnets for magnonics, magnon-based spintronics, has not been explored yet. Here, we report the experimental observation of long-distance magnon transport in quasi-twodimensio…
We study the dependence of the heat transfer and the van der Waals friction between two semi-infinite solids on the dielectric properties of the bodies. We show that the heat transfer and van der Waals friction at short separation between the solids may increase by many orders of magnitude when the surfaces are covered by adsorbates, or can support low-frequency surface plasmons. In this case the heat transfer and van der Waals friction are determined by resonant photon tunneling between adsorbate vibrational modes, or surface plasmon modes. The enhancement of the van der Waals friction is esp…
We study the mutual interactions of simple, parallel polymers and nanotubes, and develop a scheme to include the van der Waals interactions in the framework of density functional theory (DFT) for these molecules at intermediate to long-range separations. We primarily focus on the polymers polyethylene, isotactic polypropylene, and isotactic polyvinylchloride, but our approach applies more generally to all simple polymers and nanotubes. From first-principle DFT calculations we extract the electron density of the polymers and their static electric response. We derive explicit expressions for the…
The van der Waals heterostructures are a fertile frontier for discovering emergent phenomena in condensed matter systems. They are constructed by stacking elements of a large library of two-dimensional materials, which couple together through van der Waals interactions. However, the number of possible combinations within this library is staggering, and fully exploring their potential is a daunting task. Here we introduce van der Waals metamaterials to rapidly prototype and screen their quantum counterparts. These layered metamaterials are designed to reshape the flow of ultrasound to mimic ele…
Van der Waals-Casimir dispersion interactions between two apposed graphene layers, a graphene layer and a substrate, and in a multilamellar graphene system are analyzed within the framework of the Lifshitz theory. This formulation hinges on a known form of the dielectric response function of an undoped or doped graphene sheet, assumed to be of a random phase approximation form. In the geometry of two apposed layers the separation dependence of the van der Waals-Casimir interaction for both types of graphene sheets is determined and compared with some well known limiting cases. In a multilamell…
The emergence of graphene and two-dimensional van der Walls materials renewed interest to investigation of the low-frequency noise in the low-dimensional systems. The layered van der Waals materials offers unique opportunities for studying the low-frequency noise owing to the properties controlled by the thickness of these materials, and tunable carrier concentration. In this review, we describe unusual low-frequency noise phenomena in quasi-2D and quasi-1D van der Waals materials. We also demonstrate that the low-frequency noise spectroscopy is a powerful tool for investigation of the electro…
Here, we propose quantum spin Hall-like phononic states in van der Waals bilayer systems with antiferromagnetic ordering. Antiferromagnetic ordering in bilayer systems with small interlayer interaction makes the total Chern number zero, where the Chern numbers for each layer are opposite to each other. In bilayer CrI3 where antiferromagnetic ordering has been experimentally demonstrated, we show that the quantum spin Hall-like states appear with spatially separated chiral edge modes.
Research on graphene and other two-dimensional atomic crystals is intense and likely to remain one of the hottest topics in condensed matter physics and materials science for many years. Looking beyond this field, isolated atomic planes can also be reassembled into designer heterostructures made layer by layer in a precisely chosen sequence. The first - already remarkably complex - such heterostructures (referred to as 'van der Waals') have recently been fabricated and investigated revealing unusual properties and new phenomena. Here we review this emerging research area and attempt to identif…
The transition of van der Waals to Casimir forces between macroscopic gold surfaces is investigated by Atomic Force Microscopy in the plane-sphere geometry. It was found that the transition appears to take place at separations about 10 % the plasma wavelength for evaporated gold surfaces, which compares to theoretical predictions by incorporation of experimental optical data and roughness corrections. Moreover, the force data allow estimation of the Hamaker constant AH in the van der Waals regime, which is in good agreement with the Lifshitz theory predictions (even if roughness corrections ar…
There has been a huge increase of interests in two-dimensional van der Waals materials over the past ten years or so with the conspicuous absence of one particular class of materials: magnetic van der Waals systems. In this Viewpoint, we point it out and illustrate how we might be able to benefit from exploring these so-far neglected materials.
The exfoliation of two naturally occurring van der Waals minerals, graphite and molybdenite, arouse an unprecedented level of interest by the scientific community and shaped a whole new field of research: 2D materials research. Several years later, the family of van der Waals materials that can be exfoliated to isolate 2D materials keeps growing, but most of them are synthetic. Interestingly, in nature plenty of naturally occurring van der Waals minerals can be found with a wide range of chemical compositions and crystal structures whose properties are mostly unexplored so far. This Perspectiv…
