Strong synthetic magnetic fields have been successfully implemented in periodically driven optical lattices. However, the interplay of the driving and interactions introduces detrimental heating, and for this reason it is still challenging to reach a fractional quantum Hall state in cold-atom setup. By performing a numerical study, we investigate stability of a bosonic Laughlin state in a small atomic sample exposed to driving. We identify an optimal regime of microscopic parameters, in particular interaction strength $U$ and the driving frequency $ω$, such that the stroboscopic dynamics supports the basic $ν= 1/2$ Laughlin state. Moreover, we explore slow ramping of a driving term and show that the considered protocol allows for the preparation of the Laughlin state on experimentally realistic time scales.
In two dimensions strongly interacting bosons in a magnetic field can realize a bosonic integer quantum Hall state, the simplest two dimensional example of a symmetry protected topological phase. We propose a realistic implementation of this phase using an optical flux lattice. Through exact diagonalization calculations, we show that the system exhibits a clear bulk gap and the topological signature of the bosonic integer quantum Hall state. In particular, the calculation of the many-body Chern number leads to a quantized Hall conductance in agreement with the analytical predictions. We also s…
We study incompressible ground states of bosons in a two-dimensional rotating square optical lattice. The system can be described by the Bose-Hubbard model in an effective uniform magnetic field present due to the lattice rotation. To study ground states of the system, we map it to a frustrated spin model, followed by Schwinger boson mean field theory and projective symmetry group analysis. Using symmetry analysis we identify bosonic fractional quantum Hall states, predicted for bosonic atoms in rotating optical lattices, with possible stable gapped spin liquid states within the Schwinger boso…
The anomalous Hall effect has had a profound influence on the understanding of many electronic topological materials but is much less studied in their bosonic counterparts. We predict that an intrinsic anomalous Hall effect exists in a recently realized bosonic chiral superfluid, a $p$-band Bose-Einstein condensate in a 2D hexagonal boron nitride optical lattice [X. Wang et al., https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-021-03702-0 Nature (London) 596, 227 (2021)]. We evaluate the frequency-dependent Hall conductivity within a multi-orbital Bose-Hubbard model that accurately captures the real exp…
The recent progress in engineering topological band structures in optical-lattice systems makes it promising to study fractional Chern insulator states in these systems. Here we consider a realistic finite system of a few repulsively interacting bosons on a square lattice with magnetic flux and sharp edges, as it can be realized in quantum-gas microscopes. We investigate under which conditions a fractional Chern insulator state corresponding to the Laughlin-like state at filling $ν=1/2$ can be stabilized and its fractional excitations probed. Using numerical simulations, we find an incompressi…
We study the phase transitions of bosonic $ν=1/2$ fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect in different topological lattice models under the interplay of onsite periodic potential and Hubbard repulsion. Through exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods, we demonstrate that the many-body ground state undergoes a continuous phase transition between bosonic FQH liquid and a trivial (Mott) insulator induced by the periodic potential, characterized by the smooth crossover of energy and entanglement entropy. When the Hubbard repulsion decreases, we claim that this bosonic FQ…
We study an interacting two-component hard-core bosons on square lattice for which, in the presence of staggered magnetic flux, the ground state is a bosonic integer quantum Hall (BIQH) state. Using a coupled-wire bosonization approach, we analytically show this model exhibits a BIQH state at total charge half filling associated with a symmetry-protected topological phase under $U(1)$ charge conservation. These theoretical expectations are verified, using the infinite density matrix renormalization group method, by providing numerical evidences for: (i) a quantized Hall conductance $σ_{xy}=\pm…
We propose a scheme to realize bosonic fractional quantum Hall conductance in shaken honeycomb optical lattices. This scheme does not require a very flat band, and the necessary long-range interaction relies on s-wave scattering, which is common in many ultracold-atom experiments. By filling the lattice at 1/4 with identical bosons under Feshbach resonance, two degenerate many-body ground states share one Chern number of 1 and correspond exactly to the fractional quantum Hall conductance of 1/2. Meanwhile, we prove that the fractional quantum Hall state can be prepared by adiabatically turning…
We numerically study the behavior of spin--$1/2$ fermions on a two-dimensional square lattice subject to a uniform magnetic field, where opposite spins interact via an on-site attractive interaction. Starting from the non-interacting case where each spin population is prepared in a quantum Hall state with unity filling, we follow the evolution of the system as the interaction strength is increased. Above a critical value and for sufficiently low flux density, we observe the emergence of a twofold quasidegeneracy accompanied by the opening of an energy gap to the third level. Analysis of the en…
We study the interacting bosons in topological Hofstadter bands with Chern number two. Using exact diagonalization, we demonstrate that bosonic integer quantum Hall (BIQH) state emerges at integer boson filling factor $ν=1$ of the lowest Chern band with evidences including a robust spectrum gap and quantized topological Hall conductance two. Moreover, the robustness of BIQH state against different interactions and next-nearest neighbor hopping is investigated. The strong nearest neighbor interaction would favor a charge density wave. When the onsite interaction decreases, BIQH state undergoes …

We report a new many body phenomena called " Nearly order from quantum disorder phenomena" (NOFQD). We demonstrate the NOFQD in the experimentally realized weakly interacting Quantum Anomalous Hall system of spinor bosons in an optical lattice. We establish intrinsic connections between the phenomenological GL theory and the microscopic calculations on the effective potential. Connections with the bilayer quantum Hall system with a total filling factor $ ν_T=1 $ are made. Some insightful analogy with $ NAdS_2/NCFT_1 $ ( where $ N $ also means nearly ) correspondence in the context of Sachdev-Y…
Exotic topologically protected zero modes with parafermionic statistics (also called fractionalized Majorana modes) have been proposed to emerge in devices fabricated from a fractional quantum Hall system and a superconductor. The fractionalized statistics of these modes takes them an important step beyond the simplest non-Abelian anyons, Majorana fermions. Building on recent advances towards the realization of fractional quantum Hall states of bosonic ultracold atoms, we propose a realization of parafermions in a system consisting of Bose-Einstein-condensate trenches within a bosonic fraction…
Based on a quasi-one-dimensional limit of quantum Hall states on a thin torus, we construct a model of interaction-induced topological pumping which mimics the Hall response of the bosonic integer quantum Hall (BIQH) state. The quasi-one-dimensional counterpart of the BIQH state is identified as the Haldane phase composed of two-component bosons which form effective spin-$1$ degrees of freedom. An adiabatic change between the Haldane phase and trivial Mott insulators constitute {\it off-diagonal} topological pumping in which the translation of the lattice potential for one component induces a …
We study the ground states of 2D lattice bosons in an artificial gauge field. Using state of the art DMRG simulations we obtain the zero temperature phase diagram for hardcore bosons at densities $n_b$ with flux $n_ϕ$ per unit cell, which determines a filling $ν=n_b/n_ϕ$. We find several robust quantum Hall phases, including (i) a bosonic integer quantum Hall phase (BIQH) at $ν=2$, that realizes an interacting symmetry protected topological phase in 2D (ii) bosonic fractional quantum Hall phases including robust states at $ν=2/3$ and a Laughlin state at $ν=1/2$. The observed states correspond …
We developed a density matrix renormalization-group technique to study quantum Hall fractions of fast rotating bosons. In this paper we present a discussion of the method together with the results which we obtain in three distinct cases of the narrow channel, cylinder and spherical geometries. In the narrow channel case, which is relevant to anisotropic confining traps in the limit of extremely fast rotation, we find a series of zero-temperature phase transitions in the strongly interacting regime as a function of the interaction strength between bosons. We compute energies and density profile…
In the present paper, the Bose-Hubbard model (BHM) with the nearest-neighbor (NN) repulsions is studied from the view point of possible bosonic analogs of the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state in the vicinity of the Mott insulator (MI). First, by means of the Gutzwiller approximation, we obtain the phase diagram of the BHM in a magnetic field. Then, we introduce an effective Hamiltonian describing excess particles on a MI and calculate the vortex density, momentum distribution and the energy gap. These calculations indicate that the vortex solid forms for small NN repulsions, but a homogeneo…
Fractional Chern insulators are the proposed phases of matter mimicking the physics of fractional quantum Hall states on a lattice without an overall magnetic field. The notion of Floquet fractional Chern insulators refers to the potential possibilities to generate the underlying topological bandstructure by means of Floquet engineering. In these schemes, a highly controllable and strongly interacting system is periodically driven by an external force at a frequency such that double tunneling events during one forcing period become important and contribute to shaping the required effective ene…
We investigate the ground state properties of a bosonic Harper-Hofstadter model with local interactions on a finite cylindrical lattice with filling fraction $ν=1/2$. We find that our system supports topologically ordered states by calculating the topological entanglement entropy, and its value is in good agreement with the theoretical value for the $ν=1/2$ Laughlin state. By exploring the behaviour of the density profiles, edge currents and single-particle correlation functions, we find that the ground state on the cylinder shows all signatures of a fractional quantum Hall state even for larg…
We study $N$-component interacting particles (hardcore bosons and fermions) loaded in topological lattice models with SU$(N)$-invariant interactions based on density matrix renormalization group method. By tuning the interplay of interspecies and intraspecies interactions, we demonstrate that a class of SU$(N)$ fractional quantum Hall states can emerge at fractional filling factors $ν=N/(N+1)$ for bosons ($ν=N/(2N+1)$ for fermions) in the lowest Chern band, characterized by the nontrivial fractional Hall responses and the fractional charge pumping. Moreover, we establish a topological characte…
We propose a simple scheme for the realization of a topological quasienergy band structure with ultracold atoms in a periodically driven optical square lattice. It is based on a circular lattice shaking in the presence of a superlattice that lowers the energy on every other site. The topological band gap, which separates the two bands with Chern numbers $\pm 1$, is opened in a way characteristic to Floquet topological insulators, namely, by terms of the effective Hamiltonian that appear in subleading order of a high-frequency expansion. These terms correspond to processes where a particle tunn…
We develop a low-energy effective field theory of a two-dimensional bosonic superfluid on the lowest Landau level at zero temperature and identify a Berry term that governs the dynamics of coarse-grained superfluid degrees of freedom. For an infinite vortex crystal we compute how the Berry term affects the low-energy spectrum of soft collective Tkachenko oscillations and non-dissipative Hall responses of the particle number current and stress tensor. This term gives rise to a quadratic in momentum term in the Hall conductivity, but does not generate a non-dissipative Hall viscosity.
