It was shown recently that the discrete scaling symmetry, which underlies the Efimov effect in the three identical boson system with two-body short-range interactions, survives when single-particle 1D spin-orbit coupling terms are added to the Hamiltonian. Each three-body energy level in the ordinary Efimov scenario turns into an energy manifold that contains four energy levels in the presence of 1D spin-orbit coupling (equal mixture of Rashba-Dresselhaus coupling). This work provides a detailed characterization of the energy levels in these manifolds. The two-boson energies, which enter into the three-boson scattering threshold, are analyzed in detail. Moreover, the structural properties, e.g., momentum distributions of the two- and three-boson systems, are analyzed for various parameter combinations.
We consider theoretically ultra-cold interacting bosonic atoms confined to a wire geometry and coupled to the field of an optical cavity. A spin-orbit coupling is induced via Raman transitions employing a cavity mode and a transverse running wave pump beam, the transition imprints a spatial dependent phase onto the atomic wavefunction. Adiabatic elimination of the cavity field leads to an effective Hamiltonian for the atomic degrees of freedom, with a self-consistency condition. We map the spin-orbit coupled bosonic wire to a bosonic ladder in a magnetic field, by discretizing the spatial dime…
We investigate the thermal properties of interacting spin-orbit coupled bosons with contact interactions in two spatial dimensions. To that end, we implement the complex Langevin method, motivated by the appearance of a sign problem, on a square lattice with periodic boundary conditions. We calculate the density equation of state non-perturbatively in a range of spin-orbit couplings and chemical potentials. Our results show that mean-field solutions tend to underestimate the average density, especially for stronger values of the spin-orbit coupling. Additionally, the finite nature of the simul…
Synthetic spin-orbit coupling in ultracold atomic gases can be taken to extremes rarely found in solids. We study a two dimensional Hubbard model of bosons in an optical lattice in the presence of spin-orbit coupling strong enough to drive direct transitions from Mott insulators to superfluids. Here we find phase-modulated superfluids with finite momentum that are generated entirely by spin-orbit coupling. We investigate the rich phase patterns of the superfluids, which may be directly probed using time-of-flight imaging of the spin-dependent momentum distribution.
We study the emergence of supersolid Devil's staircases of spin-orbit coupled bosons loaded in optical lattices. We consider two- and three-dimensional systems of pseudo-spin-$1/2$ bosons interacting via local spin-dependent interactions. These interactions together with spin-orbit coupling produce length scales that are commensurate to the lattice spacing. This commensurability leads to Devil's staircases of supersolids, with fractal Hausdorff dimensions, which arise from uniform superfluid phases. We show that umklapp processes are essential for the existence of commensurate supersolids, and…
Beliaev damping provides one of the most important mechanisms for dissipation of quasiparticles through beyond-mean-field effects at zero temperature. Here we present the first analytical result of Beliaev damping in low-energy excitations of spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ interacting bosons with equal Rashba and Dresslhaus spin-orbit couplings. We identify novel features of Beliaev decay rate due to spin-orbit coupling, in particular, it shows explicit dependence on the spin-density interaction and diverges at the interaction-modified phase boundary between the zero-momentum and plane-wave phases. This r…
Spin-orbit coupled cold atom systems, governed by Hamiltonians that contain quadratic kinetic energy terms typical for a particle's motion in the usual Schrödinger equation and linear kinetic energy terms typical for a particle's motion in the usual Dirac equation, have attracted a great deal of attention recently since they provide an alternative route for realizing fractional quantum Hall physics, topological insulators, and spintronics physics. The present work focuses on the three-boson system in the presence of 1D spin-orbit coupling, which is most relevant to ongoing cold atom experiment…
We investigate several dynamical regimes characterizing a bosonic binary mixture loaded in a ring trimer, with particular reference to the persistence of demixing. The degree of phase separation is evaluated by means of the "Entropy of mixing", an indicator borrowed from Statistical Thermodynamics. Three classes of demixed stationary configurations are identified and their energetic and linear stability carefully analyzed. An extended set of trajectories originating in the vicinity of fixed points are explicitly simulated and chaos is shown to arise according to three different mechanisms. In …
In this paper, I'm going to talk about the theoretical and experimental progress in studying spin-orbit coupled spin-1 bosons. Realization of spin-orbit coupled quantum gases opens a new avenue in cold atom physics. In particular, the interplay between spin-orbit coupling and inter-atomic interaction leads to many intriguing phenomena. Moreover, the non-zero momentum of ground states can be controlled by external fields, which allows for good quantum control.
We demonstrate that many-body localization of two-dimensional weakly interacting bosons in disorder remains stable in the thermodynamic limit at sufficiently low temperatures. Highly energetic particles destroy the localized state only above a critical temperature, which increases with the strength of the disorder. If the particle distribution is truncated at high energies, as it does for cold atom systems, the localization can be stable at any temperature.
We discuss pairing of light-matter bosons under effective spin-orbit (SO) coupling in two-dimensional semiconductors. The SO coupling is shown to induce dynamical broadening of a two-body bound state. Application of a transverse magnetic field yields the rich Feshbach resonance phenomenology. We predict quantum bosonic halos with a synthetic angular momentum L=2. The d-wave-like dressing of the nominally s-wave bound state is induced by SO coupling to the continuum in the open channel. The fundamental properties of the emergent quantum number remain to be explored.
A system of bosons in a two-dimensional harmonic trap in the presence of Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling is investigated. An analytic treatment of the ground state of a single atom in the weak-coupling regime is presented and used as a basis for a perturbation theory in the interacting two-boson system. The numerical diagonalization of both the single-particle and the two-boson Hamiltonian matrices allows us to go beyond those approximations and obtain not only the ground state, but also the low-energy spectra and the different energy contributions separately. We show that the expectation valu…
Comment on "Quantum Quasicrystals of Spin-Orbit-Coupled Dipolar Bosons"
在最近的一封信中,Gopalakrishnan,Martin和Demler [Phys. Rev. Lett.
Intrinsic spin angular-momentum coupling of an electron has a relativistic quantum origin with the coupling arising from charged-orbits, which does not carry over to charge-neutral atoms. Here we propose a mechanism of spontaneous generation of spin angular-momentum coupling with spinor atomic bosons loaded into $p$-orbital bands of a two-dimensional optical-lattice. This spin angular-momentum coupling originates from many-body correlations and spontaneous symmetry breaking in a superfluid, with the key ingredients attributed to spin-channel quantum fluctuations and an approximate rotation sym…
We study a mobile quantum impurity, possessing internal rotational degrees of freedom, confined to a ring in the presence of a many-particle bosonic bath. By considering the recently introduced rotating polaron problem, we define the Hamiltonian and examine the energy spectrum. The weak-coupling regime is studied by means of a variational ansatz in the truncated Fock space. The corresponding spectrum indicates that there emerges a coupling between the internal and orbital angular momenta of the impurity as a consequence of the phonon exchange. We interpret the coupling as a phonon-mediated spi…
