The $U(1)_A$ boson mass is calculated through the phenomenological characteristics of the vacuum related to spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry in QCD. The mass is determined by the mixed quark-gluon condensate $\langle \bar q G q \rangle$ that emerges in an appropriate correlation function due to triangle anomaly. For three flavor QCD in chiral limit we find the numerical value for the $U(1)_A$ boson mass to be $M_0=310\pm 50~{\rm MeV}$.
Using the Langevin equation for the linear $σ$ model, we have investigated the effect of friction and noise on the possible disoriented chiral condensate formation. Friction and noise are supposed to suppress longwavelength oscillations and growth of disoriented chiral condensate domains. Details simulation shows that for heavy ion collisions, interplay of friction and noise occur in such a manner that formation of disoriented chiral condensate domains are enhanced.
Theoretical speculations and experimental data suggesting the possibility of observing disoriented chiral condensates at a Full Acceptance Detector are reviewed.
We investigate two different models. In one of them massive fermions interact with a massive scalar field and in the other the fermion field is in an electrical field (QED2). The chiral condensates are calculated in one-loop approximation. We found that the chiral condensate in the case of the Yukawa interaction the fermions and scalar field does not vanish if the mass of the fermion field tends to zero. The chiral condensate disappears in QED2, if the fermion mass is zero.
It is known that, in the chiral limit, spatially inhomogeneous chiral condensate occurs in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model at finite density within a mean-field approximation. We study here how an introduction of current quark mass affects the ground state with the spatially inhomogeneous chiral condensate. Numerical calculations show that, even if the current quark mass is introduced, the spatially inhomogeneous chiral condensate can take place. In order to obtain the ground state, the thermodynamic potential is calculated with a mean-field approximation. The influence of finite current ma…
The probability distribution of a neutral pion fraction from independent domains of disoriented chiral condensate is characterized. The signal for the condensate is still clear for a large number of independent domains if one of them is predominant.
We apply the probability distribution function method to the study of chiral properties of QCD with quarks in the exact massless limit. A relation among the chiral condensate, zeros of the Bessel function and eigenvalue of Dirac operator is also given. The chiral condensate in this limit can be measured with small number of eigenvalues of the massless Dirac operator and without any ambiguous mass extrapolation. Results for SU(3) gauge theory with quenched Kogut-Susskind quarks on the $10^4$ lattice are shown.
It is demonstrated, that chirality violating condensates in massless QCD arise from zero mode solutions of Dirac equations in arbitrary gluon fields. Basing of this idea, the model is suggested, which allows one to calculate quark condensate magnetic susceptibilities in the external constant electromagnetic field.
The current theoretical understanding of disoriented chiral condensate is briefly reviewed. I discuss the basic idea, the formation mechanism and experimental signatures of DCC in high energy collisions.
The Nambu Jona-Lasinio model with a Polyakov loop is extended to finite isospin chemical potential case, which is characterized by simultaneous coupling of pion condensate, chiral condensate and Polyakov loop. The pion condensate, chiral condensate and the Polyakov loop as functions of temperature and isospin chemical potential are investigated by minimizing the thermodynamic potential of the system. The resulting $(T,μ_I)$ phase diagram is studied with emphasis on the critical point and Polyakov loop dynamics. The tricritical point for the pion superfluidity phase transition is confirmed and …
Meson corrections on chiral condensate up to next-to-leading order in $1/N_c$ expansion at finite density are investigated in NJL model with chiral symmetry explicitly breaking. Compared with the mean-field results, the chiral phase transition is still of first order, while the properties at the critical density of chiral phase transition are found to change significantly.
The fermion four-point functions and condensates as the chiral symmetry order parameters are calculated analytically in U(1) gauge theory in the massless phase. It is shown that in leading order of the loop expansion of the effective action, there is a critical coupling for the nonperturbative parity-invariant chirality-changing four-fermion functions; this critical coupling however is the same as that for dynamical mass generation. Therefore there is no breaking of chiral symmetry through the condensation of four-fermion functions below the critical coupling for dynamical mass generation for …
In the physical vacuum of QCD, the energy density of light-quark fields strongly coupled to slowly varying gluon fields can be negative. The states that drive this energy density lowest are condensates of pairs of quarks and antiquarks of nearly opposite momenta. These quark-antiquark condensates break chiral symmetry. They may also affect other features of hadronic physics, such as the range of the strong force and the confinement of color.
Vacuum expectation values of products of local bilinears $\barψψ$ are computed in massless $QED_2$ at finite density. It is shown that chiral condensates exhibit an oscillatory inhomogeneous behaviour depending on the chemical potential. The use of a path-integral approach clarifies the connection of this phenomenon with the topological structure of the theory.
We investigate a model with a massless fermion and a massive scalar field with the Yukawa interaction between these two fields. The model possess a discrete symmetry. The chiral condensate is calculated in one-loop approximation in $(1+1)$-dimensional spacetime. It was shown that the chiral condensate vanishes at two different values of the coupling constant. At the first of them there is a phase transition in which the discrete symmetry is restored. At the second zero of the chiral condensate it takes place a phase transition which distinguishes the positive $μ^2$ from the negative $μ^2$, whe…
We use the linear $σ$ model to analyse the dynamics of a disoriented chiral condensate. For idealized boundary conditions appropriate to high energy collisions, the problem can be reduced to a one dimensional one. The evolution of the chiral state is then that of a simple dynamical system and can be studied analytically.
We have investigated the phase transition and disoriented chiral condensate domain formation in linear sigma model. Solving the equation of motion for the sigma model fields in contact with a heat bath, we have shown that the fields undergo phase transition above a certain critical temperature(T_c). It was also shown that when the fields thermalised at temperature above T_c are cooled down sufficiently rapidly, disoriented chiral condensate domains are formed quite late in the evolution.
As an alternative to the two-quark condensate we propose a specific four-quark condensate as an order parameter of chiral symmetry restoration. We show that this four-quark condensate is closer connected to observable quantities. Within a resonance gas model we calculate the in-medium changes of two- and four-quark condensate as functions of temperature and baryo-chemical potential. In this way we estimate the line of chiral symmetry restoration in the temperature-potential plane and also as a function of energy and baryon density. It turns out that the line determined from the vanishing of th…
We discuss the quark condensate of the vacuum inside the baryon. We analyze the 1+1 dimensional chiral bag in analogy with the realistic 3+1 dimensional one. The Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type interaction is used to investigate the quark condensate in the chiral bag. Considering the strong meson-quark coupling, we solve the mean field solution to the scalar and pseudoscalar channels by including the chiral Casimir effects. The self-consistent equation allows a finite value of the quark condensate and hence a finite dynamical quark mass inside the bag. It is shown that an approximate Cheshire C…
A theoretical framework is developed for treating the quantization of the photons in a spacetime with a longitudinal expansion. This can be used to study the production of the photons through the non-equilibrium relaxation of a disoriented chiral condensate presumably formed in the expanding hot central region in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. These photons can be a signature of the formation of disoriented chiral condensates in the direct photon measurements of heavy-ion collisions.
Conservation of baryon number as topological charge in effective chiral field theories imposes a local constraint on the time evolution of field configurations in the commonly used O(4) model. Possible consequences for the formation of chiral condensates after a quench from random initial configurations are discussed. It is argued that efficient dissipative terms are necessary but not sufficient to unwind the randomly curled-up initial configuration, before collective motion towards the condensate can grow. The existence of soliton stabilizing mechanisms will further prolong or prevent this pr…
Isospin density and thermal corrections for several condensates are discussed, at the one-loop level, in the frame of chiral dynamics with pionic degrees of freedom. The evolution of such objects give an additional insight into the condensed-pion phase transition, that occurs basically when $|\mui|>m_π$, being $|\mui|$ the isospin chemical potential. Calculations are done in both phases, showing a good agreement with lattice results for such condensates.
In contrast to common belief, the chirally symmetric Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model does not contain massless pions, due to strong chiral fluctuations. Although quarks acquire spontaneously a nonzero constituent mass $M$, pions have a nonzero mass equal to the mass of $ \s $-mesons, both being of the order of $M$. This result is found in several cutoff schemes. Our derivation is nonperturbative, but involves a simple approximation (London limit) which should, however, receive only quantitative, no qualitative corrections.
Topologically nontrivial time-dependent solutions of the classical nonlinear sigma model are studied as candidates of the disoriented chiral condensate (DCC) in 3+1 dimensions. Unlike the analytic solutions so far discussed, these solutions cannot be transformed into isospin-uniform ones by chiral rotations. If they are produced as DCC's, they can be detected by a distinct pattern in the angle-rapidity distribution of the neutral-to-chrged-pion ratio.
We construct the phase diagram of the chiral and diquark condensates at finite temperature and density in the 1+1 dimensional (2D) two flavor massless Gross Neveu model. The resultant phase diagram shows (I) the chiral condensed phase at low temperature and density, (II) the diquark condensed phase at low temperature and high density, and (III) the chiral and diquark coexisting phase at low temperature and intermediate density. This phase structure is also seen in the 3D Gross Neveu model and the 4D Nambu Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. Thus the phase diagrams of the chiral and diquark condensates i…
We analyse the extension of Chiral Perturbation Theory to describe a meson gas out of thermal equilibrium. For that purpose, we let the pion decay constant be a time-dependent function and work within the Schwinger-Keldysh contour technique. A useful connection with curved space-time QFT allows to consistently renormalise the model, introducing two new low-energy constants in the chiral limit. We discuss the applicability of our approach within a Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collision environment. In particular, we investigate the formation of Disoriented Chiral Condensate domains in this model, via…
We examine the shift in the chiral condensate due to a constant electromagnetic field at ${\cal O}(p^6)$ using SU(2) chiral perturbation theory and a realistic $M_π= 140 \textrm{MeV}$. We find that this value differs significantly from the value calculated using $M_π= 0$, while the magnitude of the two-loop correction is unclear due to the uncertainty in the experimentally determined value of the relevant ${\cal L}_6$ LEC.
The behavior of chiral condensate in a hot and dense medium is investigated within a phenomenological approach inspired by the AdS/CFT correspondence. We find that it decreases when temperature and/or chemical potential are increased, and it vanishes at some critical values. The locus of such critical points is also drawn and discussed.
The problem of quantum fluctuations of the chiral condensate due to next-to-leading contributions is investigated. Meson contributions to the chiral condensate are calculated in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with the analytical (dimensional) regularization in a framework of the mean-field expansion. The pion contribution can be significant, while the sigma-meson contribution is small in the regime of physical values of the model parameters. Non-pole contributions are also estimated and found to be small.
We consider here chiral symmetry breaking in quantum chromodynamics arising from gluon condensates in vacuum. Through coherent states of gluons simulating a mean field type of approximation, we show that the off-shell gluon condensates of vacuum generate a mass-like contribution for the quarks, giving rise to chiral symmetry breaking. We next note that spontaneous breaking of global chiral symmetry links the four component quark field operator to the pion wave function. This in turn yields many hadronic properties in the light quark sector in agreement with experiments, leading to the conclusi…
We have investigated the phase transition and disoriented chiral condensate domain formation in linear sigma model. Solving the Langevin equation for the linear $σ$ model, we have shown that for zero mass pions the fields undergo phase transition above a certain temperature ($T_c$). For finite mass pions, there is no phase transition. It was also shown that when the fields, thermalised at temperature above $T_c$ are cooled down sufficiently rapidly, disoriented chiral condensate domains are formed quite late in the evolution, if the pions are assumed to be mass less. For massive pions, no larg…
We determine the ${\bar{q}}q$ condensate for quark masses from zero up to that of the strange quark within a phenomenologically successful modelling of continuum QCD by solving the quark Schwinger-Dyson equation. The existence of multiple solutions to this equation is the key to an accurate and reliable extraction of this condensate using the operator product expansion. We explain why alternative definitions fail to give the physical condensate.
A new formalism to calculate the in-medium chiral condensate is presented. At lower densities, this approach leads to a linear expression. If we demand a compatibility with the famous model-independent result, then the pion-nucleon sigma term should be six times the average current mass of light quarks. QCD-like interactions may slow the decreasing behavior of the condensate with increasing densities, compared with the linear extrapolation, if densities are lower than twice the nuclear saturation density. At higher densities, the condensate vanishes inevitably.
We study two-dimensional model with a fermion field and a self-interaction scalar field with the Yukawa interaction beyond the framework of the one-loop approximation. We show that in the model besides a phase transitions appear decays of the excited scalar states.
We calculate the light quark condensate, the strange quark condensate, the pion condensate, and the axial condensate in three-flavor chiral perturbation theory ($χ$PT) in the presence of an isospin chemical potential at next-to-leading order at zero temperature. It is shown that the three-flavor $χ$PT effective potential and condensates can be mapped onto two-flavor $χ$PT ones by integrating out mesons with strange quark content (kaons and eta), with renormalized couplings. We compare the results for the light quark and pion condensates at finite pseudoscalar source with ($2+1$)-flavor lattice…
We apply the canonical quantum field theory based on the Liouville-von Neumann equation to the nonequilibrium linear sigma model. Particular emphasis is put on the mechanism for domain growth of disoriented chiral condensates due to long wavelength modes and its scaling behavior. Scattering effects, decoherence and emergence of order parameter are also discussed beyond the Hartree approximation.
It is demonstrated, that chirality violating condensates in massless QCD arise entirely from zero mode solutions of Dirac equations in arbitrary gluon fields. The model is suggested, where the zero mode solutions are the ones for quarks, moving in the instanton field. Basing on this model were calculated the quark condensate magnetic susceptibilities of dimensions $3(χ)$ and 5 ($κ$ and $ξ$). The good considence of the values $χ,κ$ and $ξ$, obtained in this approach with ones, found from the hadronic spectrum ia a serious argument in favour, that instantons are the only source of chirality viol…
Scalar meson contributions in chiral quark condensate are calculated for analytically regularized Nambu -- Jona-Lasinio model in framework of mean-field expansion in bilocal-source formalism. Sigma-meson contribution for physical values of parameters is found to be small. Pion contribution is found to be significant and should be taken into account at the choice of the parameter values.
We present a model independent study of the chiral condensate evolution in a hadronic gas, in terms of temperature and baryon chemical potential. The meson-meson interactions are described within Chiral Perturbation Theory and the pion-nucleon interaction by means of Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory, both at one loop. Together with the virial expansion, this provides a model independent systematic expansion at low temperatures and chemical potentials, which includes the physical quark masses. This can serve as a guideline for further studies on the lattice. We also obtain estimates of t…
I discuss some properties of spatially dependent chiral condensates, focusing on one-dimensional modulations. After briefly introducing a generic formalism for studying inhomogeneous solutions in dense quark matter, I consider a plane-wave and a sinusoidal ansatz, and discuss the relationship between their order parameters and free energies, as well as a comparison of their dispersion relations. I then introduce a real kink crystal, and discuss its relationship with the sinusoidal ansatz by performing a Fourier analysis of this kind of solution.
We consider the quantum state describing theDisoriented Chiral Condensate (DCC), which may be produced in high energy collisions. We show how a mean field treatment of the quantum equations corresponding to the classical linear sigma model leads to a squeezed state description of the pions emerging from the DCC. We examine various squeezed and coherent state descriptions of those pions with particular attention to charge and number fluctuations. We also study the phenomenology of multiple DCC domains.
With QCD sum rule evaluations, spectral changes of hadrons inside nuclear matter are considered, which shed light on QCD condensates and thus on the non-perturbative structure of the QCD ground state. For some light quark configurations, omega meson and nucleon, the relevance of four-quark condensates is compared; the D meson as a representative of heavy-light quark systems is also briefly discussed.
Four-quark correlators and the factorization hypothesis are analyzed in the meson sector within Chiral Perturbation Theory. Factorization of the four-quark condensate holds to leading and next to leading order. However at next to next to leading order, a term with a nontrivial space-time dependence in the four-quark correlator yields a divergent four-quark condensate, whereas the two-quark condensate and the scalar susceptibility are finite. Such a non-factorization term vanishes only in the chiral limit. We also comment on how factorization still holds in the large $N_c$ limit, provided such …
We model the evolution of the disoriented chiral condensate formed through both a sudden quench and through a phase transition with a metastable state of arbitrary disorientation . We show that the total multiplicity distributions of charged and neutral pions functions are dramatic characteristic signals for the DCC and are related directly to the way in which the DCC forms.
In this talk, we describe part of a recent work on the correlation function of a V-A current with a V+A current in the framework of QCD in the limit of a large number of colours Nc. The discussion takes place within two successive approximations of this theory, called MHA and MHA+V'. Results concerning the evaluation of chiral condensates of dimension six and eight, as well as matrix elements of the Q7 and Q8 electroweak penguin operators, are given.
We propose a chemical potential dependent effective gluon propagator and study the chiral quark condensate in strongly interacting matter in the framework of Dyson-Schwinger equation approach. The obtained results manifest that, as the effect of the chemical potential on the effective gluon propagator is taken into account, the chiral quark condensate decreases gradually with the increasing of the chemical potential if it is less than the critical value, and the condensate vanishes suddenly at the critical chemical potential. The inclusion of the chemical potential in the effective gluon propa…
A simple and consistent real time analysis of the long-wavelength chiral condensate fields in the background of hard thermal modes is presented in the framework of the linear sigma model. Effective evolution equations are derived for the inhomogeneous condensate fields coupled to a heat bath. Multiple effects of the thermal background on the disoriented chiral condensate are studied using linear response theory. We determine the temperature dependence of the equilibrium condensate, and examine the modification of the sigma and pion dispersion relations as these mesons traverse a hot medium. We…
How fast does the quark condensate in QCD-like theories vary as a function of $N_f$ is inferred from real QCD using chiral perturbation theory at order one-loop. A sum rule is derived for the single relevant chiral coupling-constant, $L_6$. A model independent lower bound is obtained. The spectral function satisfies a Weinberg-type superconvergence relation. It is discussed how this, together with chiral constraints allows a solid evaluation of $L_6$, based on experimental $ππ-K\bar K$ S-wave T-matrix input. The resulting value of $L_6$ is compatible with a strong $N_f$ dependence possibly sug…
The correlation function of a $V-A$ current with a $V+A$ current is discussed within the framework of QCD in the limit of a large number of colours $N_c$. Applications to the evaluation of chiral condensates of dimension six and higher, as well as to the matrix elements of the $Q_7$ and $Q_8$ electroweak penguin operators are discussed. A critical comparison with previous determinations of the same parameters has also been made.
Evolution of disoriented chiral condenstates is studied with the classical sigma model in 3+1 dimensions. By smoothly connecting a chiral symmetric solution of the formation period to a solution of the decay period, we obtain a complete spacetime evolution of the pion field for a simple and physically interesting source. The formation process is discussed quantitatively from the viewpoint of the axial-vector isospin conservation.
We discuss the effect of strong electromagnetic fields on chiral orientation in the framework of the linear $σ$ model. Based on lessons we learn from computation of the effective potential at one loop, we argue that the chiral U(1) anomaly dominates chiral disorientation driven by electromagnetism. We show that the anomaly effect induces a quasi-instantaneous ``kick'' to field configurations along the $π^0$ direction in relativistic heavy ion collisions. We discuss the possibility that a ``kick'', even though small in magnitude, can have a substantial effect on the formation of chirally misali…
We review recent progress in the description and understanding of disoriented chiral condensates. Certain important unsolved issues are underlined, and the preliminary results of our program of investigation of these issues in the framework of the classical linear sigma model are reported. We also briefly review a formalism which could be useful at the full non-equilibrium quantum field theory level of analysis.
We study the various stages of the evolution of chiral condensates disoriented via the ``baked-alaska'' mechanism, in which the condensates are described as the products of external sources localized on the light cone. Our analysis is based on the classical equations of motion of either the linear or the nonlinear sigma model. We use the associated framework of coherent states and, especially, their source functions to make the connection to the distribution functions for the produced particles. We also compare our classical approach with a mean-field calculation which includes a certain class…
A previous estimate of the quark condensate in one-flavour massless QCD from the known value of the gluino condensate in super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory is extended to Nf >1 by considering the large-N limit of an SU(N) gauge theory with one flavour in the antisymmetric representation and nf = Nf -1 extra flavours in the fundamental representation. We argue that, even at nf> 0, suitably chosen correlators in this theory can be mapped to those of SYM as N--> infinity. We give arguments why this correspondence should be particularly good for Nf =3 and compare our prediction with available (real and…
We study the production of photons through the non-equilibrium relaxation of a disoriented chiral condensate. We propose that to search for non-equilibrium photons in the direct photon measurements of heavy-ion collisions can be a potential test of the formation of disoriented chiral condensates.
The probability distribution of neutral pion fraction from independent domains of disoriented chiral condensate is characterized. The signal for the condensate is clear for a small number of domains but is greatly reduced for more than three.
The temperature evolution of the chiral condensates in a gas made of pions, kaons and etas is studied within the framework of SU(2) and SU(3) Chiral Perturbation Theory. We describe the temperature dependence of the quark condensates by using the meson meson scattering phase shifts in a second order virial expansion. We find that the SU(3) formalism yields an extrapolated melting temperature for the non-strange condensates which is lower by about 20-30 MeV than within SU(2). In addition our results show that the strange condensate melting is slower than that of the non-strange, due to the diff…
We investigate the influence of the isospin asymmetry on the phase structure of quark matter near the chiral critical point systematically using a generalized version of Ginzburg-Landau approach. The effect has proven to be so profound that it brings about not only a shift of the critical point but also a rich variety of phases in its neighborhood. In particular, there shows up a phase with spatially varying charged pion condensate which we name the "solitonic pion condensate" in addition to the "chiral defect lattice" where the chiral condensate is partially destructed by periodic placements …
