By analysing an n-dimensional generalisation of Thomas's cyclically symmetric attractor we find that this chaotic dynamical system behaves like a random walk constrained onto the surface of a hypersphere. The growth of error is limited, with qualitatively different behaviour depending on a control parameter. For moderate values of the control parameter, linear growth of error is seen. For low values of the control parameter, the error is limited by the random walk behaviour. Finally, we link this to the predictability of homogeneous isotropic turbulence, which we find here also behaves like a constrained random walk.
Labyrinth chaos was discovered by Otto Rössler and René Thomas in their endeavour to identify the necessary mathematical conditions for the appearance of chaotic and hyperchaotic motion in continuous flows. Here, we celebrate their discovery by considering a single labyrinth walks system and an array of coupled labyrinth chaos systems that exhibit complex, chaotic behaviour, reminiscent of chimera-like states, a peculiar synchronisation phenomenon. We discuss the properties of the single labyrinth walks system and review the ability of coupled labyrinth chaos systems to exhibit chimera-like st…
In this paper, we show that "Labyrinth walks", the conservative version of "Labyrinth chaos" and member of the Thomas-Rössler class of systems, does not admit an autonomous Hamiltonian as a constant function in time, and as a consequence, does not admit a symplectic structure. However, it is conservative, and thus admits a vector potential, being at the same time chaotic. This exceptional set of properties makes "Labyrinth walks" an elegant example of a chaotic, conservative, non-Hamiltonian system, with only unstable stationary points in its phase space, arranged in a 3-dimensional grid. As a…
In previous publications, we showed that the incremental process of the chaotic diffusion of dissipative solitons in a prototypical complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, known, e.g., from nonlinear optics, is governed by a simple Markov process leading to an Anti-Persistent Random Walk of motion or by a more complex Hidden Markov Model with continuous output densities. In this article, we reveal the transition between these two models by studying the soliton dynamics in dependence on the main bifurcation parameter of the Ginzburg-Landau equation and identify the underlying hidden Markov processes.…
We find that a symbolic walk (performed by a walker with memory given by a Bernoulli shift) is able to distinguish between the random or chaotic topology of a given network. We show this result by means of studying the undirected baker network, which is defined by following the Ulam approach for the baker transformation in order to introduce the effect of deterministic chaos into its structure. The chaotic topology is revealed through the central role played by the nodes associated with the positions corresponding to the shortest periodic orbits of the generating map. They are the overwhelming…
Coined discrete-time quantum walks are studied using simple deterministic dynamical systems as coins whose classical limit can range from being integrable to chaotic. It is shown that a Loschmidt echo like fidelity plays a central role and when the coin is chaotic this is approximately the characteristic function of a classical random walker. Thus the classical binomial distribution arises as a limit of the quantum walk and the walker exhibits diffusive growth before eventually becoming ballistic. The coin-walker entanglement growth is shown to be logarithmic in time as in the case of many-bod…
Designing a pseudorandom number generator (PRNG) is a difficult and complex task. Many recent works have considered chaotic functions as the basis of built PRNGs: the quality of the output would indeed be an obvious consequence of some chaos properties. However, there is no direct reasoning that goes from chaotic functions to uniform distribution of the output. Moreover, embedding such kind of functions into a PRNG does not necessarily allow to get a chaotic output, which could be required for simulating some chaotic behaviors. In a previous work, some of the authors have proposed the idea of …
Chaotic walking of cold atoms in a tilted optical lattice, created by two counter propagating running waves with an additional external field, is demonstrated theoretically and numerically in the semiclassical and Hamiltonian approximations. The effect consists in random-like changing the direction of atomic motion in a rigid lattice under the influence of a constant force due to a specific behavior of the atomic dipole-moment component that changes abruptly in a random-like manner while atoms cross standing-wave nodes. Chaotic walking generates a fractal-like scattering of atoms that manifest…
When Robert Brown first observed colloidal pollen grains in water he inaccurately concluded that their motion arose "neither from currents in the fluid, nor from its gradual evaporation, but belonged to the particle itself". In this work we study the dynamics of a classical molecule consisting of three masses and three harmonic springs in free space that does display a rotational random walk "belonging to the particle itself". The geometric nonlinearities arising from the non-zero rest lengths of the springs connecting the masses break the integrability of the harmonic system and lead to chaot…
It has been shown classically that combining two chaotic random walks can yield an ordered(periodic) walk. Our aim in this paper is to find a quantum analog for this rather counter-intuitive result. We study chaotic and periodic nature of cyclic quantum walks and focus on a unique situation wherein a periodic quantum walk on a 3-cycle graph is generated via a deterministic combination of two chaotic quantum walks on the same graph. We extend our results to even-numbered cyclic graphs, specifically a 4-cycle graph too. Our results will be relevant in quantum cryptography and quantum chaos contr…
Random walks serve as important tools for studying complex network structures, yet their dynamics in cases where transition probabilities are not static remain under explored and poorly understood. Here we study nonlinear random walks that occur when transition probabilities depend on the state of the system. We show that when these transition probabilities are non-monotonic, i.e., are not uniformly biased towards the most densely or sparsely populated nodes, but rather direct random walkers with more nuance, chaotic dynamics emerge. Using multiple transition probability functions and a range …
We report a new accelerated diffusion phenomenon that is produced by a one-dimensional ran- dom walk in which the flight probability to one of the two directions (i.e., bias) oscillates dynam- ically in periodic, quasiperiodic, and chaotic manners. The probability oscillation dynamics can be physically observed in nanoscale photoexcitation transfer in a quantum-dot network, where the existence probability of an exciton at the bottom energy level of a quantum dot fluctuates dif- ferently with a parameter setting. We evaluate the ensemble average of the time-averaged mean square displacement (ET…
We investigate the dynamics of highly polydispersed finite granular chains. From the spatio-spectral properties of small vibrations, we identify which particular single-particle displacements lead to energy localization. Then, we address a fundamental question: Do granular nonlinearities lead to chaotic dynamics and if so, does chaos destroy this energy localization? Our numerical simulations show that for moderate nonlinearities, although the overall system behaves chaotically, it can exhibit long lasting energy localization for particular single particle excitations. On the other hand, for s…
In this paper, a new pseudo-random number generator (PRNG) based on chaotic iterations is proposed. This method also combines the digits of two XORshifts PRNGs. The statistical properties of this new generator are improved: the generated sequences can pass all the DieHARD statistical test suite. In addition, this generator behaves chaotically, as defined by Devaney. This makes our generator suitable for cryptographic applications. An illustration in the field of data hiding is presented and the robustness of the obtained data hiding algorithm against attacks is evaluated.
We show that the occurrence of chaotic diffusion in a typical class of time-delayed systems with linear instantaneous and nonlinear delayed term can be well described by an anti-persistent random walk. We numerically investigate the dependence of all relevant quantities characterizing the random walk on the strength of the nonlinearity and on the delay. With the help of analytical considerations, we show that for a decreasing nonlinearity parameter the resulting dependence of the diffusion coefficient is well described by Markov processes of increasing order.
Population dynamics in random ecological networks are investigated by analyzing a simple deterministic equation. It is found that a sequence of abrupt changes of populations punctuating quiescent states characterize the long time behavior. An asymptotic analysis is developed by introducing a log-scaled time, and it is shown that such a dynamical process behaves as non-steady weak chaos in which population disturbances grow algebraically in time. Also, some relevance of our study to taxonomic data of biological extinction is mentioned.
We prove stochastic stability of chaotic maps for a general class of Markov random perturbations (including singular ones) satisfying some kind of mixing conditions. One of the consequences of this statement is the proof of Ulam's conjecture about the approximation of the dynamics of a chaotic system by a finite state Markov chain. Conditions under which the localization phenomenon (i.e. stabilization of singular invariant measures) takes place are also considered. Our main tools are the so called bounded variation approach combined with the ergodic theorem of Ionescu-Tulcea and Marinescu, and…
We use simple deterministic dynamical systems as coins in studying quantum walks. These dynamical systems can be chosen to display, in the classical limit, a range of behaviors from the integrable to chaotic, or deterministically random. As an example of an integrable coin we study the Fourier walk that generalizes the Hadamard walk and show that the walker slows down with coin dimensionality, which controls the effective Planck constant. Introducing multi-Harper maps as deterministic models of random walks we study the effect of coin chaos on the quantum walk. We also demonstrate that breakin…
We study the consequences of deterministic chaos for diffusion-controlled reaction. As an example, we analyze a diffusive-reactive deterministic multibaker and a parameter-dependent variation of it. We construct the diffusive and the reactive modes of the models as eigenstates of the Frobenius-Perron operator. The associated eigenvalues provide the dispersion relations of diffusion and reaction and, hence, they determine the reaction rate. For the simplest model we show explicitly that the reaction rate behaves as phenomenologically expected for one-dimensional diffusion-controlled reaction. U…
We have studied a chaotic transport in a two-dimensional periodic vortical flow under a time-dependent perturbation with period T where the global diffusion occurs along the stochastic web. By using the Melnikov method we construct the separatrix map describing the approximate dynamics near the saddle separatrices. Focusing on the small T, the width of the stochastic layer is calculated analytically by using the residue criterion and the diffusion constant by using the random phase assumption and correlated random walks. The analytical results are in good agreements with the results of two dif…
We analyze energy spreading for a system that features mixed chaotic phase-space, whose control parameters (or slow degrees of freedom) vary quasi-statically. For demonstration purpose we consider the restricted 3~body problem, where the distance between the two central stars is modulated due to their Kepler motion. If the system featured hard-chaos, one would expect diffusive spreading with coefficient that can be estimated using linear-response (Kubo) theory. But for mixed phase space the chaotic sea is multi-layered. Consequently, it becomes a challenge to find a robust procedure that trans…
Chaos enables the emergence of randomness in deterministic physical systems. Therefore it can be exploited for the conception of true random number generators (RNG) mandatory in classical cryptography applications. Meanwhile, nanomechanical oscillators, at the core of many on-board functionalities such as sensing, reveal as excellent candidates to behave chaotically. This is made possible thanks to intrinsic mechanical nonlinearities emerging at the nanoscale. Here we present a platform gathering a nanomechanical oscillator and its integrated capacitive actuation. Using a modulation of the res…
We study the quantum chaotic dynamics of an initially well-localized wave packet in a cosine potential perturbed by an external time-dependent force. For our choice of initial condition and with $\hbar$ small but finite, we find that the wave packet behaves classically (meaning that the quantum behavior is indistinguishable from that of the analogous classical system) as long as the motion is confined to the interior of the remnant separatrix of the cosine potential. Once the classical motion becomes unbounded, however, we find that quantum interference effects dominate. This interference lead…
We propose a flower shape billiard in order to study the irregular parameter dependence of chaotic normal diffusion. Our model is an open system consisting of periodically distributed obstacles of flower shape, and it is strongly chaotic for almost all parameter values. We compute the parameter dependent diffusion coefficient of this model from computer simulations and analyze its functional form by different schemes all generalizing the simple random walk approximation of Machta and Zwanzig. The improved methods we use are based either on heuristic higher-order corrections to the simple rando…
We investigate three different methods for systematically approximating the diffusion coefficient of a deterministic random walk on the line which contains dynamical correlations that change irregularly under parameter variation. Capturing these correlations by incorporating higher order terms, all schemes converge to the analytically exact result. Two of these methods are based on expanding the Taylor-Green-Kubo formula for diffusion, whilst the third method approximates Markov partitions and transition matrices by using the escape rate theory of chaotic diffusion. We check the practicability…
One-dimensional Bose-Hubbard models are well known to obey a transition from regular to quantum-chaotic spectral statistics. We are extending this concept to relatively simple two-dimensional many-body models. Also in two dimensions a transition from regular to chaotic spectral statistics is found and discussed. In particular, we analyze the dependence of the spectral properties on the bond number of the two-dimensional lattices and the applied boundary conditions. For maximal connectivity, the systems behave most regularly in agreement with the applicability of mean-field approaches in the li…
In this work we deal with the Hénon and the Lozi map for a choice of parameters where they show transient chaos. Orbits close to the chaotic saddle behave chaotically for a while to eventually escape to an external attractor. Traditionally, to prevent such an escape, the partial control technique has been applied. This method stands out for considering disturbances (noise) affecting the map and for finding a special region of the phase space, called the safe set, where the control required to sustain the orbits is small. However, in this work we will apply a new approach of the partial control…
