Writing the metric of an asymptotically flat spacetime in Bondi coordinates provides an elegant way of formulating the Einstein equation as a characteristic value problem. In this setting, we find that a specific class of asymptotically flat spacetimes, including stationary solutions, contains a Maxwell gauge field as free data. Choosing this gauge field to correspond to the Dirac monopole, we derive the Taub-NUT solution in Bondi coordinates.
We use the harmonic space technique to construct explicitly a quaternionic extension of the Taub-NUT metric. It depends on two parameters, the first being the Taub-NUT `mass' and the second one the cosmological constant.
The generalized Killing equations and the symmetries of Taub-NUT spinning space are investigated. For spinless particles the Runge-Lenz vector defines a constant of motion directly, whereas for spinning particles it now requires a non-trivial contribution from spin. The generalized Runge-Lenz vector for spinning Taub-NUT space is completely evaluated.
The geodesic motion of pseudo-classical spinning particles in Euclidean Taub-NUT space is analysed. The constants of motion are expressed in terms of Killing-Yano tensors. Some previous results from the literature are corrected.
We study aspects of the extended gravitational thermodynamics for the Taub-NUT and Taub-Bolt geometries in four dimensional locally anti-de Sitter spacetime, where the cosmological constant is treated as a dynamical pressure. Attention is paid to the phase structure in the (p,T) plane, which has a line of first order phase transitions extending from the origin. We argue for a dynamical interpretation of the unstable physics in the negative specific heat region. A deformation corresponding to a dyonic Taub-NUT/Bolt system is also explored, and the effect of the deformation on the phase diagram …
I show that there are no SU(2)-invariant (time-dependent) tensorial perturbations of Lorentzian Taub-NUT space. It follows that the spacetime is unstable at the linear level against generic perturbations. I speculate that this fact is responsible for so far unsuccessful attempts to define a sensible thermodynamics for NUT-charged spacetimes.
A class of generalized Taub-NUT gravitational instantons is reported in five - dimensional Einstein gravity coupled to a non-linear sigma model. The geodesic dynamics of a spinless particle of unit mass on these static gravitational instantons is studied. This is accomplished by finding a generalized Runge-Lenz vector. Unlike the Kepler problem, or, the dynamics of a spinless particle on the familiar Taub-NUT gravitational instantons, the orbits are not conic sections.
The generalized Killing equations for the configuration space of spinning particles (spinning space) are analysed. Simple solutions of the homogeneous part of these equations are expressed in terms of Killing-Yano tensors. The general results are applied to the case of the four-dimensional euclidean Taub-NUT manifold.
In this paper, we construct new solutions describing rotating black rings on Taub-NUT using the inverse-scattering method. These are five-dimensional vacuum space-times, generalising the Emparan-Reall and extremal Pomeransky-Sen'kov black rings to a Taub-NUT background space. When reduced to four dimensions in Kaluza-Klein theory, these solutions describe (possibly rotating) electrically charged black holes in superposition with a finitely separated magnetic monopole. Various properties of these solutions are studied, from both a five- and four-dimensional perspective.
Motivated by the recent researches of black holes with NUT charge, we investigate the validity of the weak cosmic censorship conjecture for Kerr-Taub-NUT black hole with a test massive scalar field and a test particle, respectively. For the scalar field scattering gedanken experiment, we consider an infinitesimal time interval process. The result shows that both extremal and near-extremal Kerr-Taub-NUT black holes cannot be over-spun. For the test particle thought experiment, the study suggests that extremal Kerr-Taub-NUT black hole cannot be over-spun; while near-extremal Kerr-Taub-NUT black …
This article focuses on the new approach to the nature of a nut parameter $n$, usually treated as a dual charge to the mass. Instead of thinking about it as a gravitational analog of the magnetic monopole, we will show that the Taub-NUT spacetime conceals a peculiar rotation coming from the Misner strings depending on the nut value. Besides reconciling a number of confusing results present in the literature, this allows us to establish a consistent description of the black hole thermodynamics for the Lorentzian Taub--NUT spacetime with essential contribution from the Misner strings to the angu…
The geodesic motion of pseudo-classical spinning particles in the Euclidean Taub-NUT space is analysed. The generalized Killing equations for spinning space are investigated and the constants of motion are derived in terms of the solutions of these equations. A simple exact solution, corresponding to trajectories lying on a cone, is given.
The destruction of a regular black hole event horizon might provide us the possibility to access regions inside black hole event horizon. This paper investigates the possibility of overcharging a charged Taub-NUT regular black hole via the scattering of a charged field and the absorption of a charged particle. For the charged scalar field scattering, both the near-extremal and extremal charged Taub-NUT regular black holes cannot be overcharged. For the test charged particle absorption, the result shows that the event horizon of the extremal charged Taub-NUT regular black hole still exists whil…
We present details of the harmonic space construction of a quaternionic extension of the four-dimensional Taub-NUT metric. As the main merit of the harmonic space approach, the metric is obtained in an explicit form following a generic set of rules. It exhibits $SU(2)\times U(1)$ isometry group and depends on two parameters, Taub-NUT `mass' and the cosmological constant. We consider several limiting cases of interest which correspond to special choices of the involved parameters.
The boosted Taub-NUT metric with zero ADM mass is shown to possess a dual momentum in the direction of the boost giving credit to the existence of another 4-vector K_μin linearized gravity associated to the NUT charge and dual to the usual P_μ. Taking the infinite boost limit we obtain a shock pp-wave with NUT charge. We show that the latter is the gravitational dual of the infinitely boosted Schwarzschild metric, also known as the Aichelburg-Sexl pp-wave. We review the fact that this new shock pp-wave is also an half-BPS solution of N=1 supergravity. It has a BPS bound equal to K_t=|K_z|.
A necessary condition that a Stäckel-Killing tensor of valence 2 be the contracted product of a Killing-Yano tensor of valence 2 with itself is re-derived for a Riemannian manifold. This condition is applied to the generalized Euclidean Taub-NUT metrics which admit a Kepler type symmetry. It is shown that in general the Stäckel-Killing tensors involved in the Runge-Lenz vector cannot be expressed as a product of Killing-Yano tensors. The only exception is the original Taub-NUT metric.
Fermions in D=4 self-dual Euclidean Taub-NUT space are investigated. Dirac-type operators involving Killing-Yano tensors of the Taub-NUT geometry are explicitly given showing that they anticommute with the standard Dirac operator and commute with the Hamiltonian as it is expected. They are connected with the hidden symmetries of the space allowing the construction of a conserved vector operator analogous to the Runge-Lenz vector of the Kepler problem. This operator is written down pointing out its algebraic properties.
We present the complete set of analytical solutions of the geodesic equation in Taub-NUT space-times in terms of the Weierstrass elliptic function. We systematically study the underlying polynomials and characterize the motion of test particles by its zeros. Since the presence of the "Misner string" in the Taub-NUT metric has led to different interpretations, we consider these in terms of the geodesics of the space-time. In particular, we address the geodesic incompleteness at the horizons discussed by Misner and Taub, and the analytic extension of Miller, Kruskal and Godfrey, and compare with…
The Schrödinger equation is investigated in the Euclidean Taub-NUT geometry. The bound states are degenerate and an extra degeneracy is due to the conserved Runge-Lenz vector. The existence of the extra conserved quantities, quadratic in four-velocities implies the possibility of separating variables in two different coordinate systems. The eigenvalues and the eigenvectors are given in both cases in explicit, closed form.
We present an exact solution describing a stationary and axisymmetric object with electromagnetic and dilaton fields. The solution generalizes the usual Kerr-Taub-NUT (Newman-Unti-Tamburino) spacetime in general relativity and is obtained by boosting this spacetime in the fifth dimension and performing a Kaluza-Klein reduction to four dimensions. We also discuss the physical parameters of this solution and calculate its gyromagnetic ratio.
We review the geodesic motion of pseudo-classical spinning particles in curved spaces. Investigating the generalized Killing equations for spinning spaces, we express the constants of motion in terms of Killing-Yano tensors. The general results are applied to the case of the four-dimensional Euclidean Taub-NUT spinning space. A simple exact solution, corresponding to trajectories lying on a cone, is given.
Starting with the Taub--NUT solution to Einstein's equations, together with a constant dilaton, a dyonic Taub--NUT solution of low energy heterotic string theory with non--trivial dilaton, axion and $U(1)$ gauge fields is constructed by employing $O(1,1)$ transformations. The electromagnetic dual of this solution is constructed, using $SL(2,\rline)$ transformations. By an appropriate change to scaled variables, the extremal limit of the dual solution is shown to correspond to the low energy limit of an exact conformal field theory presented previously.
We show that the first law for the rotating Taub-NUT is straightforwardly established with the surface charge method. The entropy is explicitly found as a charge, and its value is not proportional to the horizon area. We conclude that there are unavoidable contributions from the Misner strings to the charges, still, the mass and angular momentum gets standard values. However, there are no independent charges associated with the Misner strings.
Starting from the generic harmonic superspace action of the quaternion-Kähler sigma models and using the quotient approach we present, in an explicit form, a quaternion-Kähler extension of the double Taub-NUT metric. It possesses $U(1)\times U(1)$ isometry and supplies a new example of non-homogeneous Einstein metric with self-dual Weyl tensor.
We construct new charged solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell field equations with cosmological constant. These solutions describe the nut-charged generalisation of the higher dimensional Reissner-Nordström spacetimes. For a negative cosmological constant these solutions are the charged generalizations of the topological nut-charged black hole solutions in higher dimensions. Finally, we discuss the global structure of such solutions and possible applications.
We present further analysis of an anisotropic, non-singular early universe model that leads to the viable cosmology presented in Dechant et al (arXiv:0809.4335). Although this model (the DLH model) contains scalar field matter, it is reminiscent of the Taub-NUT vacuum solution in that it has biaxial Bianchi IX geometry and its evolution exhibits a dimensionality reduction at a quasi-regular singularity that one can identify with the big-bang. We show that the DLH and Taub-NUT metrics are related by a coordinate transformation, in which the DLH time coordinate plays the role of conformal time f…
Using the extended forms of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle from string theory and the quantum gravity theory, we drived Hawking temperature of a Taub-Nut-(A)dS black hole. In spite of their distinctive natures such as asymptotically locally flat and breakdown of the area theorem of the horizon for the black holes, we show that the corrections to Hawking temperature by the generalized versions of the the Heisenberg uncertainty principle increases like the Schwarzschild-(A)dS black hole and give the reason why the Taub-Nut-(A)dS metric may have AdS/CFT dual picture.
In theories of semi-classical quantum gravity where the cosmological constant is considered a thermodynamic variable, the gravitational mass of a black hole has been shown to correspond to the enthalpy of the thermodynamic system, rather than the energy. We propose that this should be extended to all spacetime solutions, and consider the meaning of this extension of gravitational thermodynamics for the Taub-NUT and Taub-Bolt geometries in four dimensional locally anti-de Sitter spacetime. We present formulae for their thermodynamic volumes. Surprisingly, Taub-NUT has negative volume, for which…
We investigate quantum tunnelling methods for calculating black hole temperature, specifically the null geodesic method of Parikh and Wilczek and the Hamilton-Jacobi Ansatz method of Angheben et al. We consider application of these methods to a broad class of spacetimes with event horizons, inlcuding Rindler and non-static spacetimes such as Kerr-Newman and Taub-NUT. We obtain a general form for the temperature of Taub-NUT-Ads black holes that is commensurate with other methods. We examine the limitations of these methods for extremal black holes, taking the extremal Reissner-Nordstrom spaceti…
We solve the recently-proposed equations describing non-BPS extremal multi-center configurations, and construct explicit solutions describing non-supersymmetric extremal black rings in Taub-NUT, as well as the seed solution for the most general extremal non-BPS under-rotating black hole in four dimensions. We also find solutions that contain both a black hole and a black ring, which descend to four-dimensional extremal non-BPS two-center black holes with generic charges.
In this work, we perform a detailed analysis of the equatorial motion of the charged test particles in Kerr-Newman-Taub-NUT spacetime. By working out the orbit equation in the radial direction, we examine possible orbit types. We investigate the conditions for existence of bound orbits in causality-preserving region as well as the conditions for existence of circular orbits for charged and uncharged particles. We also study the effect of NUT parameter on Newtonian orbits. Finally, we give exact analytical solutions of equations of equatorial motion for a charged test particle.
We construct a novel charged Taub-NUT spacetime, providing a first non-trivial example of a self-gravitating solution to the recently proposed ModMax theory, the most general (1-parametric) theory of non-linear electrodynamics that is characterized by both the conformal symmetry and the $SO(2)$ duality-rotation invariance. The spacetime features non-trivial magnetic fields, in their presence the non-linearity of the field becomes apparent and the solution is distinguished from that of the Maxwell theory. Thermodynamics of the new solution, the charged black hole limit of vanishing NUT paramete…
The SO(4,1) gauge-invariant theory of the Dirac fermions in the external field of the Kaluza-Klein monopole is investigated. It is shown that the discrete quantum modes are governed by reducible representations of the o(4) dynamical algebra generated by the components of the angular momentum operator and those of the Runge-Lenz operator of the Dirac theory in Taub-NUT background. The consequence is that there exist central and axial discrete modes whose spinors have no separated variables.
We investigate the SO(4,1) gauge-invariant theory of the Dirac fermions in the external field of the Kaluza-Klein monopole, pointing out that the quantum modes can be recovered from a Klein-Gordon equation analogous to the Schr\" odinger equation in the Taub-NUT background. Moreover, we show that there is a large collection of observables that can be directly derived from those of the scalar theory. These offer many possibilities of choosing complete sets of commuting operators which determine the quantum modes. In addition there are some spin- like and Dirac-type operators involving the covar…
Electric-magnetic duality, the Newman-Janis shift, and the double copy all act by elementary operations on three-point amplitudes. At the same time, they generate a network of interesting classical solutions spanning from the Coulomb charge via the dyon to the Kerr-Taub-NUT spacetime. We identify the amplitudes corresponding to each of these solutions, working to all orders in spin, but to leading perturbative order. We confirm that the amplitudes double-copy when the solutions are related by the classical double copy. Along the way we show that the Kerr-Taub-NUT solution corresponds to a grav…
We show that the class of four-dimensional Taub-Bolt(NUT) spacetimes with positive cosmological constant for some values of NUT charges are stable and have entropies that are greater than that of de Sitter spacetime, in violation of the entropic N-bound conjecture. We also show that the maximal mass conjecture, which states "any asymptotically dS spacetime with mass greater than dS has a cosmological singularity", can be violated as well. Our calculation of conserved mass and entropy is based on an extension of the path integral formulation to asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes.
In this work, we study the motion of charged test particles in Kerr-Newman-Taub-NUT spacetime. We analyze the angular and the radial parts of the orbit equations and examine the possible orbit types. We also investigate the spherical orbits and their stabilities. Furthermore, we obtain the analytical solutions of the equations of motion and express them in terms of Jacobian and Weierstrass elliptic functions. Finally, we discuss the observables of the bound motion and calculate the perihelion shift and Lense-Thirring effect for three dimensional bound orbits.
The thermodynamics of the Taub-NUT solution has been predominantly studied in the Euclidean sector, upon imposing the condition for the absence of Misner strings. Such thermodynamics is quite exceptional: the periodicity of the Euclidean time is restricted and thence the NUT charge cannot be independently varied, the entropy is not equal to a quarter of the area, and the thermodynamic volume can be negative. In this paper we revisit this paradigm and study the thermodynamics of the Lorentzian Taub-NUT solution, maintaining (as recently shown relatively harmless) Misner strings. We argue that i…
Recent work has shown the existence of a unique nonlinear extension of electromagnetism which preserves conformal symmetry and allows for the freedom of duality rotations. Moreover, black holes and gravitational waves have been found to exist in this nonlinearly extended electrovacuum. We generalise these dyonic black holes in two major ways: with the relaxation of their horizon topology and with the inclusion of magnetic mass. Motivated by recent attention to traversable wormholes, we use this new family of Taub-NUT spaces to construct AdS wormholes. We explore some thermodynamic features by …
We present different Taub-NUT/Bolt-anti de Sitter (AdS) solutions in a shift-symmetric sector of Horndeski theory of gravity possessing nonminimal kinetic coupling of scalar fields to the Einstein tensor. In four dimensions, we find locally and asymptotically locally AdS solutions possessing nontrivial scalar field. In higher dimensions, analytical Taub-NUT/Bolt-AdS p-branes and solitons are obtained, supported by the existence of p Horndeski scalar fields with axionic profile. The thermodynamical properties are studied through Euclidean methods and it is found that the first law of thermodyna…
$f(R)$ theory is a modification of Einstein general relativity which has many interesting results in cosmology and astrophysics. To derive black hole solution in this theory is difficult due to the fact that it is fourth order differential equations. In this study, we use the first reliable deviation from general relativity which is given by the quadratic form of $f(R)=R+βR^2$, where $β$ is a dimensional parameter. We calculate the energy conditions of the charged black holes and show that all of them are satisfied for the Taub-NUT spacetime. Finally, we study some thermodynamic quantities suc…
It is shown that the N=4 superalgebra of the Dirac theory in Taub-NUT space has different unitary representations related among themselves through unitary U(2) transformations. In particular the SU(2) transformations are generated by the spin-like operators constructed with the help of the same covariantly constant Killing-Yano tensors which generate Dirac-type operators. A parity operator is defined and some explicit transformations which connect the Dirac-type operators among themselves are given. These transformations form a discrete group which is a realization of the quaternion discrete g…
We study the collision of two particles with the different rest masses moving in the equatorial plane of a Kerr-Taub-NUT spacetime and get the center-of-mass (CM) energy for the particles. We find that the CM energy depends not only on the rotation parameter, $a$, but also on the NUT charge of the Kerr-Taub-NUT spacetime, $n$. Especially, for the extremal Kerr-Taub-NUT spacetime, an unlimited CM energy can be approached if the parameter $a$ is in the range $[1,\sqrt{2}]$, which is different from that of the Kerr and Kerr-Newman black holes.
The duality relating the four-dimensional Kerr-Taub-NUT black hole to a thermal two-dimensional CFT with central charges $c_L=c_R=12 J_0$ is analyzed in detail, generalizing an argument given recently for Kerr within the soft-hair approach. The hidden conformal symmetry is realized in the form of $Vir_L \times Vir_R$ diffeomorphisms which act non-trivially on the black hole horizon. Semiclassical formulae are derived for the temperature and central charges of the dual CFT. Assuming the applicability of the Cardy formula, these CFT quantities precisely reproduce the macroscopic Bekenstein-Hawki…
ALE and Taub-NUT (or ALF) hyper-Kahler four-manifolds can be naturally constructed as hyper-Kahler quotients. In the ALE case, this construction has long been understood in terms of D-branes; here we give a D-brane derivation in the Taub-NUT case. Likewise, instantons on ALE spaces and on Taub-NUT spaces have ADHM-like constructions related to hyper-Kahler quotients. Here we refine the analysis in the Taub-NUT case by making use of a D-brane probe, and give an application to M-theory.
We extend the topological Kerr-Newman-aDS solutions by including NUT charge and find generalizations of the Robinson-Bertotti solution to the negative cosmological constant case with different topologies. We show how all these solutions can be obtained as limits of the general Plebanski-Demianski solution. We study the supersymmetry properties of all these solutions in the context of gauged N=2,d=4 supergravity. Generically they preserve at most 1/4 of the total supersymmetry. In the Plebanski-Demianski case, although gauged N=2,d=4 supergravity does not have electric-magnetic duality, we find…
The first law of black hole mechanics, which relates the change of energy to the change of entropy and other conserved charges, has been the main motivation for probing the thermodynamic properties of black holes. In this work, we investigate the thermodynamics of Kerr Taub-NUT AdS black holes. We present geometric Komar definitions for the black hole charges, that by construction satisfy the Smarr formula. Further, by a scaling argument based on Euler's theorem, we establish the first law for the Kerr Taub-NUT AdS black holes. The corresponding first law includes variations in the cosmologica…
Using hyperbolic temporal and spatial cut-offs to define 4d asymptotically flat spacetimes, we show that supertranslation ambiguities in the asymptotic fields can all be removed even in the presence of gravitational magnetic charges. We then show that configurations with different electric and magnetic four-momenta can be consistently considered in the Mann-Marolf variational principle. This generalizes the previous result where variations over asymptotically flat configurations with fixed magnetic four-momenta were considered. We also express Kerr Taub-NUT metric to the leading and next to le…
In this paper, we investigate the strong gravitational lensing by the stationary, axially-symmetric black hole in Kerr-Taub-NUT spacetime in the strong field limit. The deflection angle of light ray and other strong deflection limit coefficients are obtained numerically and they are found to be closely dependent on the NUT charge $n$ and spin $a$. The magnification and the positions of the relativistic images are computed. The caustics are studied and the results show that these caustics drift away from the optical axis, which is quite different from the Schwarzschild black hole case. Moreover…
Wheeler's approach to finding exact solutions in Lovelock gravity has been predominantly applied to static spacetimes. This has led to a Birkhoff's theorem for arbitrary base manifolds in dimensions higher than four. In this work, we generalize the method and apply it to a stationary metric. Using this perspective, we present a Taub-NUT solution in eight-dimensional Lovelock gravity coupled to Maxwell fields. We use the first-order formalism to integrate the equations of motion in the torsion-free sector. The Maxwell field is presented explicitly with general integration constants, while the b…
